Christmas Crib Ceremony

One of highlights of the year is always the Christmas Crib Ceremony and this year was a classic! Our school?s celebration of the nativity took place on Thursday 19th of December with the Christmas spirit visible to all. Transition Years rehearsed tirelessly coming up to the exciting day. It?s always a proud day for the school and the whole community attended, with our esteemed and much loved guest Father Cormac making a happy appearance.

The theme of this year 's ceremony was hope, and the TY's began the celebration with a moving rendition of 'High Hopes' by Kodaline. Every TY student had a part to play in this ceremony, whether singing in the choir, reading

or playing a part in the nativity play itself. The ceremony continued with readings and our take on the birth of Jesus. We had some special touches this year, such as a video of members of our school community responding to the question ?What Does Christmas Mean to You?? put together by Kate Walsh. We also had an amazing performance by Rose O' Reilly of ?O Holy Night? and even some laughs at the bearded Wise Men!

The Crib Ceremony ended with a choir performance of ?Do They Know it?s Christmas? which in turn led to the whole school becoming involved and embracing the Christmas spirit further. It?s safe to say everyone left that day feeling very much in the Christmas Spirit.

Transition Years were very happy and left feeling full of Christmas cheer knowing that they had helped to spread the good news to all.

Consul General Visit

to SACCiarán Madden, the Consul General of Ireland, and Peacekeeper Sergeant Denis McGarry visited SAC on Thursday 9th January. During their visit they presented a fascinating talk on the roles they have played in the past, and continue to play, on the world stage, representing Ireland's interests abroad. Consul General Madden is currently based in New York and is currently working to secure Ireland a coveted position on the UN Security Council for 2021-22. He has served as Irish ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (with added responsibility for Qatar and Kuwait) and has been Director for the Middle East and North Africa. He spoke about his work representing Ireland and our

interests, and about our ambitions for the world. He answered a series of challenging questions posed to him by students on Ireland?s position on issues such as Brexit, the environment and global trade.

Students were also given a fascinating insight into the role that Ireland plays in peacekeeping operations around the world by Sergeant McGarry. It was evident to all present that he wears his Irish identity with pride, and is especially effusive about the great work done by the Irish army to maintain stability in some of the most conflict-ridden regions of the world.

Soaking Wet...and Frozen 2!!Spare a thought for the 1st Years who got soaked on their way to the cinema leading up to Christmas to see Frozen 2. Despite the weather, spirits were high and students used their initiative to make some bespoke rain gear to stave off the worst of the rain. Well done, girls. With a litt le more practice your imaginative use of unconventional materials has prepared you for the Junk Kouture module in Transition Year (see pages 14-16)!

NOT SO JUNKKOUTURE

6

Junk Kouture is a fashion competition using recycled materials, which challenges young people to design, create and model high-end couture from everyday junk. It takes in elements of fashion, design, engineering and environmental sustainability and transforms them into a creative contest like no other! Hitting its tenth year running, it has already captivated over 40,000 students, 8,000 teachers and 100,000 audience members.

All of the outfits you see here are made using recycled materials. Groups of TY students worked to design and make their creations and then apply for the competition using photos that were taken in a photo

shoot in January.

During the photo shoot hairspray and make up brushes were flying in the changing rooms. By the time all the hair was done you could taste the hairspray by just breathing the air in, and the heat from the straighteners and curlers could have smashed a thermometer! The atmosphere was electric and everyone was eager to walk the catwalk. Some girls may have walked away with more than just a fabulous hairdo and make up, they may have walked away with a mild case of hypothermia! Some models were blue with envy at the girls in jumpers and leggings in the warm classrooms.

Overall the excitement and the relief overcame the feeling of the cold,

especially when the finished photos were unveiled.

We are currently awaiting the decision on who has been chosen to go to the regional heat in Dublin, where the outfits will be judged and modeled to see whether they reach the national final. Miss Connolly and the groups are nervously waiting for that call to come.

Participating in the Junk Kouture competition has been a load of fun, but at the same time it has taught us valuable life skills such as time management. It also gave us a glamorous break from our uniform and an opportunity to showcase our individuality. Cross your fingers and wish us luck with the results!

From M ini Company

to M assive Success

Mini company is a fourth-year elective. An elective means a subject you chose to do for the entire year. Mini company is all about being an entrepreneur, setting up and running your own business.

On our own and then in groups we had to come up with ideas for a business, we could make or sell a product or service. We drew inspiration from current affairs and events such as climate change and Christmas. We also thought about our target markets and what they need or would like to buy.

We had to make a prototype which means a

sample of the product to trial and identify any errors to see if our product would work and how we could improve it. We aimed to make homemade, environmentally friendly products rather than buying in products.

Each business had to set up Instagram pages to promote our products. We made posters as a display in different corridors and had announcements on the intercom and on the school app.

We sold our products at market days in the school. These market days proved very successful as we made a lot of sales. We then attended a market day in Blackpool Shopping Centre where there were a lot of other schools selling their products too. The Evening Echo and Irish Examiner were there helping us to promote our product to a

larger audience. At this market day there were judges interviewing us and inspecting our products. One of our businesses called ?Go Glas? won the best idea and received a trophy.

Mini company gives you great knowledge about setting up and running a business. You get to learn and develop business and life skills from this mini company elective. We would encourage anyone who enjoys business and wants to run a business when they're older to put down mini company as their first preference at the start of fourth year as it gives you an insight into what the business world is really like. No matter what year you are in if you are thinking about doing mini company you can start thinking and looking for business ideas now.

Guilt y as Charged!Mark the dates in your calendar, folks! Rehearsals for the TY musical have been epic so far, and we hope the photos whet your appetite for the auditory, opthalmic and kinesthetic feast that is...wait for it...OMG it 's...LEGALLY BLONDE!!!

Miss Godfrey and her trusty team of staff and students have been hard at work each Wednesday (and some Saturdays!) perfecting the musical and we can't wait to

share it with you. Avoid the stampede for tickets and book them as soon as they're hot off the press.

There are only two performances; one matinee on Thursday 19th March and the final gala performance will take place on the evening of Friday 20th March in the Firkin Crane Theatre. Look out for a notice via the school app about the date the tickets will go on sale. Book early to avoid being devastated (or crushing a vertebrae in the stampede!) .
