Toner Bottle Recycling• All Konica Minolta toner bottles are made of HDPE, or High Density

Polyethylene -- identified by the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) as one of the two types of plastics that can be recycled most economically.

• These toner bottles are designed to be collected and recycled at local facilities, reducing fuel and gas required by shipping.

Green Design

Clean Planet Program• First toner cartridge recovery program

launched in December of 2000.• Industry’s first cost-free plan for

recycling consumables from every product well sell

• Covers all consumables including: toner cartridges, imaging units, waste toner bottles, developer units and OPC drums

• We pay for the shipping• We provide recycling containers• We make use of regional facilities to

reduce emissions by minimizing travel

Another Benefit Of Simitri• Simitri HD+ polymerized

toner is produced by an environmentally-friendly manufacturing process

• Process emits approx. 40% less CO2, NOx and SOx than conventional toner manufacturing processes

Bizhub MFPs Designed With Recycling In Mind• Plastic parts are made of recycled materials where possible.• All plastic parts are marked to indicate the type of resin used.• Labels that leave no adhesive residue are used. • To simplify recycling, parts are designed so that they can be

disassembled by a single person without special tools.• In 1991, began using cardboard and pulp molds for packaging.• Was first company to use bagasse paper (paper made from crushed

stalks of sugar cane) for operator’s manuals

Green Design

Power Only Where You Need It• In operation, most Konica Minolta models optimize power

consumption for each operating mode -- controlling the flow of power to save energy wherever possible. For example, when the bizhub C652 prints from a PC or receives a fax, the power supply is adjusted so that no electricity is sent to the scanner or to other idle sections of the product.

• Konica Minolta’s Eco Calculator shows power savings:– http://www.biz.konicaminolta.com/environment/eco_calculator/index.

Use of Organic Photoconductor Technology• Since 1938, original copiers used a photoconductor (drum) that was coated

with arsenic and selenium, two very toxic substances

• This technology was used by all subsequent models for years, and some also added cadmium, which is also toxic

• In 1983, Minolta introduced the EP450Z copier that used an organic photoconductor (OPC) drum that had coating based on kelp (seaweed) Further enhanced in 2005 with patented addition of Flourine coating. Konica used first with launch of U-bix1200 copier in 1984

• All manufacturers now use this technology

– with exception of Kyocera (ASi – ceramic)

United Nations (UN) Climate Conference

• Konica Minolta was selected as the provider of MFPs devices for the United Nations (UN) Climate Conference 2009

• “COP15” (15th Conference)

– Held in Copenhagen, Denmark - December 7 to 18, 2009

• United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

– Makes all major decisions to reduce greenhouse gases that affect climate

• There will be a focus on global warming issues for 2013 and beyond

– Not stipulated in the current Kyoto Protocol

• Konica Minolta’s partnership

– 26 bizhub products:

• 16 bizhub C652’s

• 4 bizhub C220’s

• 6 bizhub PRO 1050e’s

Environmental Initiatives- Creation of Inter-departmental team to move forward on PHASE II

initiatives such as:

- Demanufacturing of printers/MFPs

- Updating the “Clean Planet Program”

- On-line label for all products inclusive of MFP toner cartridge return

- Updating of our current “Plan it Green” environmental materials to include all new initiatives

Next Generation Lighting For World

• Federal government orders move from incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent lighting (CFL)

• Over 600,000,000 florescent bulbs end up in US landfills each year

– 30,000 lbs. of poisonous Mercury• Konica Minolta has developed organic light

emitting diode (OLED) technology that has efficiency and long life on par with fluorescent lamps.

• More closely resembles natural light• Not harmful to human eyes• Does not emit UV radiation• Thin flexible plastic film based• Will be marketed by General Electric &

Konica Minolta starting in 2012

Green Design

Next Generation Power For World

• In April 2010, began development of organic thin-film photovoltaic panel technology

• Acquired interest in Konarka Technologies to collaborate on future products

• Panels will be lightweight, flexible and transparent

• Set new benchmark for low cost solar

• Generate electricity via incoming light at shallow angles and/or limited brightness

• Can attach to building windows or canopies for new versatility and functionality
