President’s Message

As my last President's message, I want to express my

gratitude to all the GMDA members that have come forth to

participate in the last year. New names and new faces kept

appearing at our fabulous CE events. It has been a pleasure

seeing you and meeting you. I encourage all of you to keep

attending. In fact, I challenge all of you to become more active

statewide. Whether you would like to do charitable work for

Missions of Mercy or to attend our new "In Session" state study

club, I hope to see that our GMDA region will be well

represented.

A great American politician named Benjamin Franklin

once said, "All mankind is divided into three classes: those that

are immovable, those that are movable, and those that move".

Let's move GMDA!

Dr. Lynne Brock-Hattori

A Happening By. Dr. Bob Henschel

Who would imagine that one could get two hundred odd dental students, practicing dentists and teachers together at 7:30 on a zero degree Saturday morning to work gratis for five or six odd hours helping needy families care for their children's dental needs? This yearly event happened again on January 21 as the annual Give Kids a Smile Day examinations were carried out at Marquette's School of Dentistry. During a continental breakfast the orientation was accomplished. Then the crowd dispersed to perform various tasks such as monitoring the registration and flow of patients, performing and checking exams, and arranging appointments for treatment, all done in an amazingly organized and efficient manner. Treatment will be performed in February at the school, satellite clinics, and private GMDA offices. During the day I had the personal pleasure of checking student exams for numerous beautiful children. At the end of the day, my thoughts drifted back to smiling children, sincere thanks from humble parents, and several students, none of whom I'd known previously, telling me how glad they were to meet me and how they enjoyed working with me. Leaving the building I felt compelled to pause and give silent thanks for having the ability and inclination to help. If you haven't already volunteered, think about it. You're likely to find that, as the man said, you get more than you give. GKAS Treatment Day was held on February 3rd. Due to a fire in the office of our Chairperson, Dr. Lynn Lepak-McSorley, final numbers are not available at this time. Thank you to all that participated!

Smile Day 2012 at Discovery World

Smile Day 2012 is scheduled for Saturday, March 24th, 2012, from 10am until 2pm at the Discovery World on the shores of Lake Michigan. You should have received flyers for the event. Please sign or stamp the flyer, copy and give them to your patients to use as free entry into Discovery World. This year Smile Day will be celebrating 20 years of support from Delta Dental. Consider stopping in to see the event yourself. The dental students do a great job interacting with kids while educating them about the importance of good oral health.

BREAD OF HEALING NOTICE Bread of Healing Dental Clinic received a grant from the State of Wisconsin to create permanent space for their dental clinic. They are looking to fill paid positions for a Dentist and Dental Hygienist who would each work 3 half days per week starting in January 2012. Please contact Barbara Horner-Ibler at [email protected] if you are interested.

InSession By: Dr. Paul Levine

Alas the Jewel of the Great Lakes is no more. Your Wisconsin Dental Association listened to its members and in an attempt to keep things up to date and make it better for all members has turned this event into InSession, the World’s Largest Study Club. InSession is a fantastic member benefit of the Wisconsin Dental Association. It gives our members a chance to achieve some excellent continuing education, bond with team members, get deals on supplies and get together and visit with colleagues. InSession will continue to be rotated among great sites in the state. This year the event will be held May 10-12 at Monona Terrace in Madison, WI. In response to member concerns, the timing has been changed. In Session will start Thursday afternoon and continue through Saturday at noon. You will still have a chance to hear some of the most important and respected speakers in the world dental community, still have access to great social events including the Welcome Reception and a fantastic party both Thursday and Friday night, still have lunch in the Exhibit Hall on Friday and Continental Breakfast on Friday and Saturday. The biggest change is the interactive sessions on Friday. These sessions are in study club format. They will range in size from 20 to 65 people on 29 different subjects. These sessions are directed toward all members of the dental team. You will have a chance to sit down with other dentists, hygienists, assistants, or support team members and learn and exchange ideas in an interactive session. These sessions will be moderated and allow you to take something back to the office to share with your teammates. Member feedback is leading to another change. There will be flat rate fees for full or part time sessions. You will have a chance to earn up to 13 continuing education credits which is almost one half of the two year total required for Wisconsin Dentists. Whether it was the Jewel or will be InSession, it has always and will continue to be a member benefit. To keep doing this though, we need our members to be involved and attend and support this event. Remember it gives you a chance to visit different parts of Wisconsin, get some great CE, and have camaraderie with your team and other WDA members. We look forward to seeing you there!

GMDA Town Hall Meeting By: Dr. Russ Dunkel On January 11, 2012, the GMDA board hosted its first town hall meeting at Alioto’s Restaurant in Milwaukee in almost 8 years. The meeting was co-sponsored by the GMDA board and Holt Dental Supply Co. with the current WDA President Dr. Steven Stoll as guest speaker. Dr. Stoll’s presentation covered several aspects of the WDA, sort of a state of the state of the WDA. This included information and photos of the current employees of the WDA. He also talked about the 2011 WDA House of Delegates meeting and addressed other various issues. Additional topics discussed were the current status of the Wisconsin State Assembly Bill 251 on non-covered services and the ongoing status of the type of dental education facility proposed at Marshfield Clinic. There were approximately 47 people in attendance, which included WDA Executive Director Mark Paget, Amy Landis the new WDA Members Relations Coordinator, GMDA officers, trustees, several board members , and members of Holt Dental Supply Co. The GMDA board will be looking into other open forum events in order to reach out and involve more GMDA members.

Wisconsin Legislative Day Update By. Dr. Christopher Blake WDA Legislative Day was held January 18, 2012 at the State Capital. WDA members along with the sophomore and junior Marquette Dental School students were informed of current political activities of interest including an audit report summary of the seven billion, yes I said billion dollars Medicaid budget presented by Senator Kathleen Vinehout (D-Alma). What I found most striking was two of those seven billion dollars were unable to be classified into any identifiable expense category of the state. Furthermore, the auditors were unable to get clarification on this two billion dollars as to how it was spent. Our state expenditures need accountability. The Medicaid rolls have increased from about 500,000 in 2005 to over 1.2 million individuals now enrolled. We also met with our individual representatives to present information on the "non-covered service legislation" which would prohibit dental insurance plans from setting fees for services not reimbursed by the dental plan contract. If you haven't participated in this legislative experience I encourage you to do so! Our State, our profession and our families need your help. You can obtain more information at www.wda.org

UPDATE

AB 251 is essentially dead... 90 legislators in the assembly were either strongly in favor or leaning in favor of our non covered services bill. However, one of the nine who clearly opposed the bill was in a very powerful leadership position and his influence essentially killed the proposal. WDA will likely be calling on you to help next legislative session. Thanks to all who contacted their legislators and worked so hard to pass this bill. The legislative process is full of incremental victories. It is very unusual to get a bill passed in a single session. WDA flexed its grassroots tooth party muscle and those in the legislative arena have noticed we are a force to be reckoned with.
