ISSUE #12 30th April 2015

GREATER LOVE HAS NO ONE...

I was reading this week of a soldier

whose life was saved twice by

incredible circumstances during World

War 1. The first time was when 19

year old dispatch rider Private Harry

Taylor was cycling through northern

France on a night mission. A “crack”

enemy Sniper got

him in his sights

and opened fire on

him but the bullet

hit his Bible and

Prayer book that

he always kept in

his top left breast

pocket.

The bullet knocked

Harry off his bike

but he was

otherwise unhurt,

thanks to the

books taking the

force of the impact.

The bullet tore

through the front of

the thick books but barely penetrated

to the back cover.

A few weeks later Harry was saved

once again – this time by his metal

dog tag which took a direct hit from a

bullet and deflected it away.

The Bible and the dog tag are now

prized possessions of the family and

are kept in the family home by the

soldier’s son. He said “It was the hand

of God. He obviously looked after my

father. This Bible and dog tag mean

the world to me. I am lucky to have

been born! If it wasn’t for them, I

would not be here today. He was so

lucky to survive. The Bible has been in

the family ever since.” Just one of the

countless stories from soldiers around

the world giving their all to serve.

As Christians we

acknowledge the

sacrifice our Lord

made in giving His

only son so we

could have

freedom too. Jesus

was perfect in

every way and did

no wrong. He died

so we could go to

heaven. The Bible

says “Greater love

has no one than

this: to lay down

one’s life for one’s

friends” John

15:13. Christians

see Jesus’ death on the cross as the

ultimate sacrifice.

Saturday’s ANZAC Day march down

Redcliffe Parade was well attended by

Mueller students again this year -

many of them wearing their

grandparent’s medals with pride. Our

band sounded excellent as it made its

way along the waterfront on an

absolutely beautiful autumn morning.

Thanks for your enthusiastic

attendance.

YEAR 3 VISIT—CARDYTOONS

Last week the year 3 classes had an incursion with Brett Cardwell from ‘Cardytoons’. His last visit was in 2012 and

it was a real highlight for our current year 6 students. We had been eagerly planning and anticipating his return.

We were very excited to have him back. During his time here Brett painted a wonderful mural outside the ithink

room. If you are heading that direction make sure you check it out.

The classes were involved in a cartoon workshop. It was an interactive time where students learnt the basics of

cartooning. They started with the most important part of expressions – the EYES, then put faces together and

learnt how to draw hand movements and develop characters. His workshops were engaging and fun. He got the

children excited about cartooning and encouraged them to practise and use their talents and abilities.

Brett (or Cardy as he likes to be known as) was able to entertain the Prep to Year 4 students as they came into

Chapel with some crazy drawings. Students were captivated by his cartooning skills and storytelling ability as he

later shared the story of Zacchaeus meeting Jesus. At the end of Chapel he made time to draw a quick caricature

of Mr Gynther in 3 minutes.

The day ended with each year 3 students receiving their own caricature. Teachers had organised everything

weeks before so that it could be a surprise. We collected photos and made a list of their interests. Brett had been

hard at work preparing all these pictures before he came. It was such a wonderful day and going home with a

caricature was like the icing on the cake. It really was a fun and memorable day.

Quotes

“I loved learning to draw cartoons. It was something new”. - Leila | “I loved how he drew the eyes, they were cool”.

- Hayden | “I liked it when he drew Mrs Lane and Mrs Richens”. - Maddison | “The pictures he drew at chapel were

funny.” - Ashley | “He was so clever when he changed the kids shapes into pictures.” - Edward | “I enjoyed when

he told the story about Jesus using cartoons.” - Caleb

SECONDARY NEWS

YEAR 10 DESIGN, TECHNOLOGY AND AVIATION

The year 10 Design, Technology and Aviation class are looking for 'steam-punk' style items with which they will be

making wearable art. The DTA students are learning about programming micro

controllers and will be incorporating these into small items that can be worn - examples of these are LEDs sewn into

a bowtie or even a jacket. The students will also be learning about soldering and small item welding - these skills will

be used to fashion their

wearable items.

For those who haven't heard of steam-punk, it is a fashion genre that has been around for some time and is a mix-

ture of science fiction and Victorian era fashion and even a little bit of American Wild West. Picture Dr Who meets

Jules Verne and throw in a bit of Robocop. Whilst not being into it myself, I recognise that it is a platform for creativity

that suits what we do in DTA. Prepare to see some innovative designs emerging from the Year 10s.

We are willing to take things apart. We are NOT after electronics as such but if there is a mechanism inside an elec-

tronic device, then we'll disassemble the item in order to access the gizmo. Clocks are great. Please drop the items

into the front office or M6 if you are passing by.

The following are desirable...

Mechanical | Mechanical clocks and watches | Fob watches (who would want to give these away but I may as well

ask) | Gears and cogs...we need lots of these | Old cameras (not digital) | Mechanisms | Small interesting metal

objects (a nail is not interesting...), you be the judge | Mechanical typewriter | Small chain | Old gauges/

instrumentation | Springs | Old keys | Valves and relays | Morse code telegraph key and sounder | Small nuts and

bolts | Optical | Old circular reading glasses | Old welding glasses | Mini telescopes & binoculars | Lenses, magnifiers

Jewellery | Cuff links | Bowties | Ties | Pendants | Leather | Straps| Buckles |

Porcelain items eg: knobs (not plates nor cups) | Leather flying or motorbike

helmet or pith helmet (may as well ask) | Top hats | Rings | Beads | Hardware

Small diameter copper/brass tubing or rod | Copper/brass sheet metal | Hose

clamps

There will be a China Expression of Interest meeting on Wednesday the 6th of

May at 7pm in the Old Chapel (A Block).

Students who have completed an ‘Expression of Interest” form and submitted

it to Mrs Scheu or Miss Li would need to be at the meeting.

would be interested in continuing their Career at the end of their traineeship.

Certificate III in Aged Care available to students in years 10 and 11 at Peninsula Palms

SCHOOL BASED TRAINEESHIPS AVAILABLE

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships are commonly called SATs. They allow secondary school students,

in years 10, 11 and occasionally year 12, to work for a business as paid employees – all whilst studying for their QCE

and or OP. Students completing their SAT gain a Nationally Recognised Certificate and points toward their QCE.

When SATs become available they are usually filled very quickly. The most difficult part is finding an employer to

take on a school based trainee/apprentice as it costs the employer time and money to train the student.

The student spends one day each week with their employer during school time and usually more than one day

during school holidays. They must complete a minimum 50 x 7½ hour days each year on the job, this does not

include theory. They must make up time missed during exams, excursions, and any other mandatory school event,

during school holidays. Students are paid a training wage by their employer for the time spent at work however they

are not paid for theory time, sick days, or holidays.

Although most students drop a subject when they take on a SAT it is not compulsory. Dropping a subject allows the

student to catch up on lessons missed during their day with the employer. They may also work on the theory for their

SAT in these periods which will show on their timetable as Voc. Ed. A SAT is not an easy option, it requires

dedication and persistence however it can be a pathway for students into their chosen career.

All SATS must be authorised by the school which can also cancel a SAT if the student is not keeping up with his/her

school studies.

For further information contact Mrs Cole - [email protected] or phone: 3897 2719.

WHAT ARE SCHOOL-BASED APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS
