History of NDTNon Destructive Testing (NDT) is an effective inspection practice used across a variety of industries to ensure efficient, safe and cost effective operations of industrial equipment and assets, especially in the Oil & Gas and Petrochemical industries. It also helps ensure compliance with international standards like ISO, API, or CSA, and regulatory requirements like EPA and OSHA. In today’s modern world, NDT means a process or technique usedto inspect, test or evaluate various materials, components or complete assemblies for existing discontinuities or variations from required characteristics without damaging components or the entire asset. Any methodology used to carry out NDT is necessarily dependent on periodic INSPECTION of the asset.

Today, NDT has become a trusted inspection approach with numerous innovative methods. For inspections that require traveling long distances, climbing difficult terrains, reaching elevated structures or piping installations, drones or UAVs (Unmanned Air Vehicles) in conjunction with appropriate NDT technologies offer a safe and cost effective alternative to human, arm’s length inspection.

Importance of Visual-Optical Testing & Thermal Imaging in NDTVisual inspection is an integral part of most NDT methodologies. Visual inspection can provide the first indications of an impending failure or identify the necessity to investigate further. For plants, continuous visual inspection can help identify conditions that may generate a higher probability of failure, potentially reducing the costs of repair, minimizing plant downtime, and improving predictive as well as preventive maintenance early in the service life, before they become real problem. The problem arises when the places to inspect are at elevated and difficult to access locations. Today, drones equipped with hi-resolution cameras can provide safe visual inspection capabilities for remote and dangerous locations. Similarly, for inspection of Oil & Gas pipelines like routine pipeline right-of-way inspections over a rocky area or an oil producing company checking for oil spills orleakage in above surface wellhead gathering lines, remote visual inspection by drones can be a relatively inexpensive, time-saving, and effective.

Another NDT technique that can be coupled with UAV technology is infrared thermography. Thermal images generated through infrared cameras are very useful in early detection of hydrocarbon leaks. Many oil and gas industry preventive maintenance strategies feature infrared thermography as an essential component. In an effort to improve safety and maintain compliance with stringent governmental regulations, Oil & Gas companies have been proactive in identifying sources of volatile hydrocarbon emissions and repairing leaks at an early stage, before they become a big problem. The use of drones equipped with infrared thermal cameras has enhanced industry capabilities to quickly scan large and remote areas of piping and long spans of pipelines.

Drones in NDT InspectionThere are numerous NDT inspection possibilities that can be explored for Oil, Gas and petrochemical assets through Industrial UAVs. Without limitation to the applications described below, UAVs can use infrared thermal imagery for detecting material flaws as described below, as applicable, (i.e., the NDT methods still have the same limitations and benefits as usual):• 3-D characterization of internal defects through pulsed

infrared thermography.• Using infrared thermography for detection of subsurface

delamination through solar loading.• Wet insulation can be detected under solar heating (solar

gain) of the insulation jacket.

Drone Inspection and NDT in the Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Industry

Inspectioneering Journal article (continued on page 3)

Drone RegulationsIn recognition of the significant commercial potential for drones in various sectors of business, the Canadian government has incorporated / amended rules for certification and compliance requirements for UAVs in section 602.41 of Canadian Aviation Regulations SOR/96-433. The United Sates Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued Part-107 of the Federal Aviation Regulations in 2016 providing guidance for Operating Requirements and certifications for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).

In the United Kingdom, the Civil Aviation Authority has issued regulations related to Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) in the form of CAP 722 – Unmanned Aircraft System Operations in UK Airspace. The EASA Basic Regulation adopted in December 2016 by the European Council contains the first ever EU-wide rules for civil drones to fly safely in European airspace. This regulation contains general principles on revised common safety rules for civil aviation and a new mandate for the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

ConclusionDrones or UAVs, equipped with a combination of sensors and cameras, are revolutionizing inspections in the oil and gas industry. At the moment, drones with thermal imaging, photo, and video cameras, as well as gas sniffers and other sensors, are fulfilling a variety of inspection challenges. Their mobility and NDT technology compatibility allows drones to quickly and effectively analyze oil, gas, and petrochemical assets for existing and potential defective conditions. These inspections reduce workplace hazards, as inspectors are no longer required to reach elevated or difficult-to-access equipment. They are also helping operators cut costs and improve efficiency as UAV inspections require less time and financial commitment than traditional methods to complete. That is why a number of energy companies are deploying UAVs to inspect their offshore rigs, pipelines, flare stacks, towers, storage tanks, and other assets.

This month, I would like to close out my series on “HEART.” For those who may not have been following my monthy letters, HEART is achieving balance and synergy through Honesty, Excellent, Accuracy, Respect, and Teamwork. HEART plays a vital role in our success as technicians, individuals, and as companies or corporations.

To summarize, here is what the other letters represent:1. Honesty: Honesty and integrity are what we do2. Excellence: In the end, the only person responsible forexcellence is the person you see in the mirror3. Accuracy: We are duty-bound to report the results of ournondestructive testing (NDT) inspections accurately

4. Respect: We must respect the craft and art of NDTNow I want to talk about Teamwork.

Teamwork is more often talked about in terms of sports or athletics, and rightfully so. Even with the best of talent, if you cannot function as part of a team, do you part, and, at times, sacrifice for the betterment of the team, then the chances of winning can be dramatically decreased.

As in sports and competition, the best results are achieved when people work together; any successful NDT method that requires teamwork is no exception. Radiographic testing (RT) is one such NDT method.

T is for TeamworkBy Dave Bajula, ASNT 2016-2017 President and long-time member of GHASNT

RT demands that the Level II technician not only execute the “perfect shot,” but also that the barricade-watch team secures the radiation area and assures no radiation exposure to the nearby workers and the general public. Unfortunately, the industry has all but gotten rid of Level Is, who have been replaced with assistants or trainees. A Level I has specific training and can work under supervision of the Level II and perform all tasks under a set of written instructions, which fosters a teamwork environment. However, in accordance with Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A, there are no provisions for assistants or trainees to independently perform any of the NDT tasks, and they must be under direct supervision of the Level II. This puts great pressure on the Level II to coordinate teamwork in the execution of their tasks to assure safety, quality, and productivity.

The criticality of teamwork is unilateral across all participating in the NDT tasks. In general, this starts and ends with the Level III. The Level III must first must assure adequacy in the procedure and techniques that are going to be used. They must then assure competency of the technicians doing the work. Lastly, auditing and/or final review of the findings or report is oftentimes required.

With regards to an NDT service provider, the intricacies of

teamwork become key. Responsibility starts with the receptionist responding to the requestor of NDT services and the client to the appropriate operational person or the respondent. Next, the project is passed on to the technician(s) assigned to execute the work (the doers); then it returns to the client once again as the receiver of NDT services. From there it moves on to the quality control or Level III, who reviews the final data package or reports (the reviewer) to the billing clerks who handle processing. Then it goes to invoicing. Finally, it again returns to the client or receiver, who ultimately acknowledges satisfaction by paying the invoice. If you notice, there are at least three opportunities for client engagement in the example above, and the measure of success of a project directly correlates to the teamwork between all parties.

In summary, teamwork and collaboration at all phases are paramount to the success of any NDT operation or project.

This wraps up my HEART series. I would encourage everyone to adopt a personal version of “HEART” into his or her operational and quality business model. Remember: creating a safer world is everyone’s responsibility; may we all look for ways to continually improve.
