Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix Puts the"D" in Drive
A two-point-three mile of track with fast cars and exciting racing has returned to Detroit as the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix runs June 3-5. No fewer than four championship auto racing series are calling the island home as they compete for millions of dollars in total prize money. The highlight is the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit
presented by Quicken Loans doubleheader featuring the Verizon IndyCar Series. Other support races are the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the trucks of the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks presented by TRAXXAS and the Trans Am Series.Serving as Grand Marshal is a hometown hero
and one of the rising stars in the National Hockey League - Detroit Red Wings star center Dylan Larkin. He’ll give the famous command “Drivers, Start Your Engines” before the start of the first IndyCar Series race. Fresh off an impressive rookie season that saw him score a team-high 23 goals and tally 22 assists, the 19-year-old Larkin gave fans in Hockeytown a lot to cheer about in the 2015-2016 season. Born in Waterford and raised in nearby Clarkston, Larkin is truly a homegrown star. Just last week he won the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association Red Wings Rookie of the Year trophy.
“Growing up in the Detroit area, I know the tradition of the Grand Prix and the excitement it brings to the city,” said Larkin. “It’s going to be fun to visit Belle Isle, meet some of the drivers and get a chance to ride in the pace car. I like to
go fast on the ice but not as fast as those guys go on the race course. I’m really looking forward to serving as the Grand Marshal.”The Grand Prix generated more than $47 million
in total spending for the Metro Detroit region in 2014. Over 95,000 people attended the Grand Prix events in 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Races were canceled 2009, 2010 and 2011 due to the sputtering Michigan economy.Alexander Rossi, the dashing young Californian
who stunned the racing world last Sunday by winning the 100th Indianapolis 500, headlines an impressive IndyCar driver lineup here. All the big names – Helio Castroneves (from
Dancing with the Stars fame), Simon Pagenaud, Will Power, Scott Dixon, Sebastien Bourdais, Tony Kanaan, Carlos Munoz, James Hinchcliffe of Canada, Charlie Kimball, Josef Newgarden – among many others, will compete. The IndyCar drivers and teams have their work cut out as they prepare for championship races on Saturday and again Sunday, both starting at 3:30 p.m. and nationally-televised by ABC Sports (Channel 7 locally).Pagenaud is the series points leader with 292,
followed by Dixon (235), Castroneves (224) and Newgarden (211).The Raceway at Belle Isle Park road course is a
challenge for any racing series especially coming off the huge paved oval of Indianapolis. Yet these IndyCar Series crews and drivers are such professionals that even grueling back-to-back races and long sleepless hours fail to deter them from gaining that winning edge on the track.Fans this weekend may have the time of their
lives on Belle Isle as Roger Penske, Bud Denker and their DGP team has plenty of fun and food planned for your visit. There are displays in the midway and live music, driver autograph sessions, extreme sports demonstrations, free Monster Truck rides, appearance by Detroit sports stars and more, in the Meijer Fan Zone. Plenty of giveaways are planned at the vendor booths, too.MotorCity Casino Hotel Entertainment Stage,
located in the Meijer Fan Zone, will feature entertainment all weekend long with live performances including The Romantics on
George B. Eichorn — The Sporting Life
Saturday and Morris Day on Sunday.Tickets are still available for the Grand Prix
with ticket plans to suit almost anyone’s tastes.Call (866) 464-PRIX (7749) or visit the Chevrolet
Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix office in the GM Renaissance Center, 300 Renaissance Center Drive, Suite 2311, in Detroit. For a full schedule of Grand Prix events see

Wayne County Provides $700,000 to help Mayor Duggan’s Grow Detroit’s Young Talent ProgramWayne County Executive
Warren C. Evans has announced a $700,000 grant, secured from the Michigan Child Care Fund, to boost the Grow Detroit’s Young Talent program. The grant will fund summer jobs for as many as 1,000 Detroit youth, ages 14-17, who receive assistance through Wayne County’s j u v e n i l e p r e v e n t i o n services. Participants will be placed with employers through Grow Detroit’s Young Talent, a six-week summer youth employment program established by Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan that aims to provide 8,000 Detroit youth this year with work readiness training and on-the-job experience. “We are excited to work with Wayne County on bringing more life-changing
opportunities and work experiences to young people in our city,” Mayor Duggan said. News of the partnership with Wayne County comes on the heels of the Grow
Detroit’s Young Talent program receiving a $2 million federal grant awarded over two years. Wayne County has partnered with 23 youth service agencies to nominate and
screen youth who are eligible to participate in the program, slated to launch in late summer of 2016.For more information, see www.gdyt.org.

There are several new composers that are being pr esent ed t h i s yea r at the Great Lakes Chamber Music Fest iva l , coming up beginning June 14. On June 15, 7:30 p.m., at Christ Church Grosse Pointe, the program will open with a piece of Jonathan Dove, Bless the Lord, O My Soul. In check ing into Dove’s recordings on Yout ube, there are some available that are worth one’s attention. I liked his Missa Brevis in particular. These events will provide an opportunity of another glimpse into the music of that composer, and much more.
Another opportunity to become familiar with the Music of Dove was provided this past Thursday, May 26, at the First Presbyterian Church in Royal Oak. Here under the baton of Suzanne Mallare-Acton, Dove’s church opera (to be performed in sma l ler venues) The Walk from the Garden was presented featuring the Rackham Symphony Choir together with the church c hoi r, or g a n i s t Jo s eph Jackson, chamber musicians of the Scarab Club, and two exceptional soloists. Eve was sung by Clodagh Earls, soprano, Adam by Jonathan Blalock tenor, and the dancer who provided some remarkable effects for the background was Gemma Beasley. The effect of the performance was impressive.
This coming week the DSO features the orchestral performance of Salome by Richard Strauss, which is certainly one of the greater operas of the past century. Strauss is known by his use of large orchestral effects and singers of exceptional quality. The story of Salome deals with the immoral structures that were present at the time of Tetrarch Herod, starting through personal turbulences that existed in his household in general. These turbulences had great effect on many political and

Salome uses this weakness to achieve her own as well as her mother’s goals to kill Jochanan the Baptist, who happens to be jailed because of blasphemy commit ted towards the royal family. “Blasphemy” was the term used then to describe prophets who were not totally “politically correct” at the time.
Conductor Leonard Slatkin and the DSO will be providing two performances of this seductive and passionate opera – one on Friday June 3 at 8 p.m. and the other on Sunday June 5 at 3 p.m. The singers include Lise
Lindstrom soprano, Chris Merritt tenor, Jane Henschel mezzo soprano, Daniel Sutin baritone, and Scott Ramsay tenor.
T h e V i v a c e s e r i e s concludes its current season on Saturday, June 4, 8 p.m., with a performance of Wei Yu (the principal cellist of the DSO) and his wife, pianist Keuna-A Lee. Homelessness is a topic much in the forefront of the minds of any who live in or near big cities. We cannot help but wonder what brought the homeless to such an existence. Playwright Dan McCormick was present for the opening n i g h t o f D e t r o i t Reper tor y Theat re’s Midwest premiere of Homeless and How We Got That Way. The play is a powerfully moving examination of what brought two professional people so low.
Sydney (Robert Vogue-Williams) is a sixt y-f ive-year-old former neurosurgeon. He was the best in the business, Director of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins. Early in the play he muses on what led him to living on the streets; his answer, “I love the liquor.” But what brought on the addiction?
Eloise (Leah Smith) is a thirty-three-year-old woman who enters pushing a grocery cart on which is affixed a sign reading “Homeless, bril l iant and need a drink.” At twenty-three, she had graduated from Brown University and published a novel, Ellie’s Ladder, which made her a literary great at the age of twenty-three. So what happened? She confesses, “I love the liquor.”
But love of liquor is far too simple an answer t o t h e d i l e m m a i n which these two find t hemselves . In t he course of the hour and
a half long play, the two strip back the layers to reveal the despair and the hurt that lie at the heart of their need to forget it all. Their humanity and dignity shine through. And the question arises, “What happens when your best isn’t good enough?”
Vogue-Williams and Sm it h , bot h E qu it y Actors, are bril l iant in their portrayals of these two lost souls. The characterizations are spot on. And, if you can believe it given the seriousness of the subject matter, they are quite funny. The opening night audience was with them every step of the way and picked up every nuance. A lt hough t hey were playing drunks, they did not fall into the trap of cliché drunkenness. They did not slur and stagger; rather, as the inhibit ions came off, they revealed rather more than they intended and blurted out quite humorous observations. Of course, playwright Dan McCormick must be credited with the e x c e l l e n c e o f t h e dialogue, but the actors delivered the lines in such a way as to make the audience believe it was seeing this conversation for the first time.
T h e s e t t i n g f o r this play was a very satisfying backdrop for these two characters. The proscenium stage was decorated to look like an arched, stone underpass, reminiscent of similar places found in Central Park in New York City. Although the

2nd Detroit Modernism Week Celebrates Greater Detroit’s Mid-Century Splendor
The Detroit Area Art Deco Society is host-ing Detroit Modernism Week, from Thurs-day, June 2 through Saturday, June 11 – the second straight year that ‘DAADS’ has orga-nized a 10-day long 'week' of events focused upon Greater Detroit’s mid-century modern-ist architecture and design. The Deco Society has partnered with a
number of local nonprofit groups and orga-nizations to bring tours, lectures and events to the public. “Our goal is to increase aware-ness about (Greater Detroit‘s) mid-century architecture and design,” said DAADS presi-dent Jeffrey Chappell.
This year DAADS welcomes Docomomo US and Docomomo US/Michigan – short for International Working Party for Documen-
tation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement – and their 2016 National Symposium; Beyond Modernism? Moving the Recent Past Forward. The Symposium will be held at the Yamasaki-
designed McGregor Memorial Conference Cen-ter on the campus of WSU, beginning on Thurs-day, June 9. The cost is $40 with registration available at docomomo-us-symposium.com.The many daily events during the 10-day
Modernism Week include the Deco Society’s premiere of Parducci, the Man Who Made De-troit Beautiful, directed by Jack P. Johnson, the thoughtful story of Detroit’s most respected De-co-era architectural sculptor, Corrado Parducci, screening on Saturday, June 11 at CCS' Wendell W. Anderson, Jr. Auditorium at $10 per ticket.Other events are bike rides with Preservation Detroit to tour Downtown De-
troit’s Minoru Yamasaki designed buildings; biking through Greater Detroit’s most ‘modern’ neighborhood, Palmer Park; tours of the Fisher and Guard-ian Buildings; a preview of the area’s largest ‘modern’ consignment shop, Le Shoppe Too, in Keego Harbor, which specializes in 20th century furniture and
collectibles; The Ins and Outs of Vintage Wear, hosted by Leah's Closet in Royal Oak; and get-togethers at various Deco-inspired drinking establishments such as The Centaur and Cliff Bell’s, to imbibe with like-minded citizens of Greater De-troit – one of the world’s epicenters for forward thinking and modern design. For more information and a complete
schedule of Detroit Modernism Week events, see daads.org.
