This year, the Chamber of Commerce division of the Partnership turns 99. A tenure of nearly 100 years is certainly something to celebrate. Much has changed since George C. Boesch served as the first chair of the

board, yet at its core, the organization continues to do many of the things it was charged with in 1920.

Conveners of People – The very idea of a Chamber of Commerce was to bring business people together to discuss common concerns. By convening, dialogue was able to occur on a variety of issues, and on occasion, consensus was able to be formed. Those same principles hold true today. By their very design, the Partnership conference rooms are there to hold meetings, and the artwork is intended to inspire long-term thinking. In addition, various committees and task forces are called together to work on a variety of community improvement initiatives.

Advocacy – Oftentimes, Chambers were established because of business reaction to adverse policy. If enough folks banded together, there was a stronger ability to either oppose or support local resolutions or state legislation. Today, there is an official government relations committee that surveys membership, compiles a policy agenda, sponsors debates, holds advocacy trips in Des Moines and Washington, D.C., and hosts local policy events with state legislators.

Membership – At its core, a Chamber is a membership organization, and although the ranks have expanded since 1920, the concept of membership remains. Each year, hundreds of businesses and organizations like yours make the decision to renew membership. Membership dollars pool resources to work on common challenges, and the annual renewal process definitively determines those that are ‘in’ and those that are ‘out.’

Messaging & Communications – In the 1920s, communication outside of meetings was done primarily with typewritten memos, handwritten letters, or by release to a small number of media sources. Much of the communication from Chambers was with its membership, but today, an ever-larger share of communication is external.

Influencing public opinion or marketing ideas and concepts now requires engaging video, regular Facebook posts, tweets, Instagram posts, online geo-fencing, radio interviews, television appearances, quotes for newspaper stories, an interactive web presence, just the right frequency of email communication, presentations to community groups, and of course, the newsletter. This core function of the Chamber of Commerce business has perhaps changed the most, and organizations have to continue to embrace new concepts to stay relevant.

Plans are underway to celebrate 100 years as an organization in 2020. We don’t have to wait until then, however, to appreciate the organization’s rich history in this community. Although we have professional staff to carry on many of the day-to-day activities on your behalf, we only serve at your pleasure. This is your organization, and I hope you are proud to belong to something that has stood the test of time.

Each year the Board of Directors is tasked with setting the policies and goals of the Greater Burlington Partnership. The organization is unique in structure and includes the Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development , Convention & Visitors Bureau and Main Street all under the collective umbrella of Greater Burlington Partnership. For this community, the collaboration has proven to be an effective and great strategy.

To accomplish this task, each division has a separate board of directors, segregated funds and a unique mission statement guiding their way.

The chairs of each board of directors are on this month’s cover. In 2019, the chairs of the divisions are (from left to right):

• Kirk Danforth, Burlington Regional RecPlex Convention & Visitors Bureau Steering Committee Chair

• Laura Beckman, Alliant Energy – Burlington Generating Station Downtown Partners, Inc. Board Chair

• Melissa Jones, Great River Health System Chamber of Commerce Board Chair

• Bryan Bross, Klingner and Associates, P.C. Economic Development Board Chair

The chairs of the organization do much more than preside over monthly board meetings. During their one year term, they represent the organization at a variety of functions and collectively meet to ensure the organization is running efficiently and effectively.

When you have an opportunity, please thank these individuals for their time and dedication to the organization and the community.

ON THE COVER 2019 Board Chairs

“Greater Burlington shall be a growing center of commerce, industry, education, healthcare,

Which community organizations do you volunteer for? I volunteer for Burlington Steamboat Days and Paint-a-Thon.

What do you enjoy most about the area? Greater Burlington is a nice quiet place with friendly peoplе. There are a lot of small town advantages like smaller living expenses, no traffic, no pollution and more. I also like the location, it's very easy to get to the big city like Chicago or St. Louis, and the local airport makes it even more convenient.

Unique about me: I'm the only Russian among YP members and maybe in town.

Lerud was elected and served as President of this organization from August 2017 through December 2018. IDMA is an organization designed to support directors and managers of Convention & Visitors Bureaus all across the state. Lerud’s leadership to IDMA during this time helped the organization begin advancing the tourism industry’s strategic plan to grow the industry and create a stronger unified voice.Incoming IDMA President Mark Eckman, Executive

Director Council Bluffs CVB, thanks Lerud for her leadership to the tourism industry.

Goal: Downtown Partners works to tie positive efforts together to get more traction and move things forward. To make DPI work, it takes a team of people to consider, plan and implement the strategies that will make our community stronger and more vibrant. I've learned so much as a board member, and I'm excited to take a step forward in a leadership role and put that knowledge to use. I look forward to the great things in store for us as we work together. #DowntownBtown #CantStopThisTrain

Why: Everyone makes a difference in this community every day, for good or bad. Whether you walk a few extra steps to the trash can or drop your litter on the sidewalk, spend your dollars in a downtown business or shop online, we all make a difference. I joined Downtown Partners five years ago to make a positive difference.

MEET THE NEW LEADERSHIP Melissa Jones, Great River Health System

Goal: As the incoming 2019 Board Chair, I look forward to working with staff to enhance our professional development programs, Greater Burlington Leadership and Greater Burlington Young Professionals. Also, we will continue to expand the Consumer Marketing Campaign designed to attract folks to Des Moines County for shopping, dining and other needed services.

Why: This organization is comprised of many people working together to enhance, grow and develop our community. It is an honor to be involved with our Chamber of Commerce board. I do it because I want to be part of the reason people choose Greater Burlington as their destination to live, work and play.

Goal: Three goals that I have for 2019 include increased board engagement, developing stronger local partnerships within our community, and increasing influence with our regional partners in Southeast Iowa. It is critical that we are hitting on all eight cylinders to improve our workforce skills and availability to fill the talent pipeline.

Why: I enjoy the exchange of ideas and the collaboration activities that occur on the Economic Development board to achieve big dreams for our region. A rising tide floats all ships, and the Economic Development board is well positioned to be the catalyst for great improvements and benefits to all our citizens in Southeast Iowa.

Goal: My goal is to work with the CVB staff and committee members in an effort to increase the number of visitors to the Greater Burlington area and to enhance the lives of those visitors. Additionally, to be involved and assist event organizers and area facilities to conduct quality events that will generate more hotel nights.

Why: As the General Manager of the Burlington RecPlex and organizer and host of many events involving tourism, I think it is important to be involved and play a role in the decisions that are made to increase tourism to Greater Burlington.
