This year, the Anderson TownshipPark District is celebrating its 35thBirthday! Since 1976 the AndersonTownship Park District has been provid-ing Anderson Township residents withquality parks, facilities and pro-grams.

As the primary event coordi-nator of Greater AndersonDays, the Anderson TownshipPark District is excited to onceagain host the largest commu-nity celebration in AndersonTownship!

The purpose for all the fun isto bring the community togeth-er for a great time, and to raisefunds for worthy community endeavorsincluding enhancing park playgroundsthrough the Park District’s GeneralPlayground Fund. Park visitors can seethe results of the ATPD’s fundraising inaction at the All-Children’s Playgroundat Beech Acres Park.

The inclusive playground inspiresboth active and imaginative play, and has

proven to be a hit with children of allages and abilities since the playground’sgrand opening in 2007!

Currently, the Beech Acres Park play-ground features a tot-lot complete with a

train and train station, swings,a sand play area, a mini-mountain, a playhouse, and anarched bridge. Older childrencan test their skills on theSasquatch-tall climbing boul-ders and a large, fort-like playunit.

The walking paths and sur-facing tie together the river andvillage theme which leads to aunique water play area. This

playground is truly a place where chil-dren with and without disabilities canplay together in a healthy recreationalenvironment.

The Beech Acres Park playground wasmade possible as a result of the hardwork and the extreme generosity of somany members of our community. In thelast six years, Greater Anderson Days

raised $51,753.27 and the Run toRemember raised $31,522 for construc-tion of the playground.

The Anderson Township Park Districtwas also fortunate to receive severalcharitable donations and grants for thecompletion of the playground: the Margeand Charles J. Schott Foundation con-tributed $200,000; the H.G., H.F., & L.T.Dornette Foundation, Fifth Third Bank &Stan Koller contributed $100,000; andWLWT- TV Channel 5, Darryl Parks &700 WLW – The Big One, with Jim Scottleading the charge, organized a fundrais-er in the name of Marcus Fiesel, whichraised a combined $77,945, includingdonations from over 1,100 businesses and

Over the past few years,Anderson Township residentshave enjoyed many newamenities and conveniencesprovided through the carefulplanning of AndersonTownship’s trustees.

One major improvementthoroughly utilized from theonset is beautiful AndersonCenter, the township’s multi-purpose government, civicand arts facility on Five MileRoad. This public space con-nects business, government, arts and civic organizations ina “one-stop shopping” optionfor residents needing govern-ment services. It also is a pop-ular gathering space that ishelping create a vibrant senseof community in AndersonTownship.

Organizations housed with-in the facility (besidesAnderson Township govern-ment) include the AndersonArea Chamber of Commerce,Summerfair Inc., and

Anderson CommunityTelevision. The AndersonTownship Historical Societyalso operates the HistoryRoom at the center for publicviewing and celebrates ourrich history.

Open for public rental,Anderson Center includes anattractive 223-seat state-of-the-art theater, rooms for confer-

ences and weddings, andother public spaces. Artsorganizations such as theCincinnati ChamberOrchestra, Beechmont Players, the Forest Aires, Playhouse inthe Park and AndersonCommunity Band all utilizethe center.

Situated in a park-like set-ting, Anderson Center is sur-rounded by wetlands, water-falls and a landscaped walk-ing trail which connects to theFive Mile Trail. Now threeyears old, the popular FiveMile Trail’s hilly path travers-es woodlands and connectsresidential areas to the Mercy

Hospital Anderson, theHealthplex, and AndersonBranch Library, along with alink to Anderson’s majorshopping artery.

While the Five Mile Trailhas become one of the mostheavily used links inAnderson’s ambitious trailsprogram, the township hasreceived sizeable federalgrants that will furtherincrease the township’s hike-bike paths, most notablydown Asbury Road linkingsubdivisions to one anotherand Beechmont Avenue. Thetownship continues to createother significant links betweenresidential areas and amenitiesto serve the most residentspossible.

Over six decades, theAnderson TownshipFireman’s Association hascontributed more than a mil-lion dollars worth of equip-ment to the AndersonTownship Fire and RescueDepartment.

Since its inception in 1940,the Association’s goal hasbeen to fund vital medicalequipment such as automatedexternal defibrillators (AEDs)and 12-lead Life Pac 15 heartmonitors that can send thepatient’s heart rhythms direct-ly to the hospital for review.

A major source of the fund-ing for this equipment comesfrom the many generousdonors who contribute duringthe Association’s annual funddrive and through the festival, held in conjunction with

Greater Anderson Days. To raise these funds, the

Association operates games ofchance and a roasted cornbooth at the three-day festival.

Out of the many wonderfulentries for the third annualGreater Anderson Days posterdesign contest, it was DouHong's unique design thatwas declared the winner.

Hong is an undergraduatestudent majoring in trans-portation design at theCollege of Design, Art,Architecture, and Planning, atthe University of Cincinnati, and hopes to eventually workin animation/illustration orthe voice-over industry.

Her concept for this year’sposter celebrating GreaterAnderson Days was to focuson all the events that makethis festival truly great.

“Having each letter ofGreater Anderson Days repre-sent a different image of whatcan be found at the celebrationis a creative way to connect theviewer to the great time they’ll

have when they go. When peo-ple see the poster, they knowthat it’s not just a festival forlocals, but a yearly culminationof fun and activities that any-one can enjoy,” Hong said.

The contest was firstoffered in 2008 as a way tohelp celebrate the tenthanniversary of Greater

Anderson Days and was sowell received that it hasbecome an annual event.

When Hong heard aboutthe contest she thought that itseemed like something funshe could do to flex her cre-ative muscles. Hongdrew some of herinspiration for thedesign from acomputer gameshe used toplay as a kidcalled “HowThings Work.”

“Everythingin the title of thegame was madeup of tools so I tookthat same idea usingimages that pertain to thefair,” Hong said.

Allison Cottrill is with theAnderson Township ParkDistrict and believes thatHong’s piece really capturedwhat Greater Anderson Days

is all about.“Greater Anderson Days is

not your typical festival, so it’simportant for a design to visu-ally reflect the spirit of thisunique, community celebra-tion.” Cottrill said. “Dou was

able to incorporatesome of the sig-

nature eventelementsinto herdesign,includingthe annualFireman’sFestival

with gam-bling and

famous roastedcorn, and the

grand finale RozziFireworks display.”

When Hong was informedthat she won the contest shewas thrilled.

Scott Lahman is with theAnderson Township ParkDistrict and he came up withthe idea for the Twinkie eatingcontest because he thought itwould be a fun event and, let’s be honest, who doesn’tlove a Twinkie?

“Everyone, or at least mosteveryone, loves Twinkies. Itmakes you smile just sayingthe name,” Lahman said.

The procedure for theTwinkie Eating Contest ispretty straightforward. Theparticipants are seated at a

table with a plate of eight to10 Twinkies in front of themand some water. There is arunning clock set for two min-utes and whoever eats all ofthe Twinkies on their plate, orthe most overall, wins.

Gayla Hawks of Anderson

is an aalluummnnuuss of last year’sTwinkie Eating Contest andhas one piece of advice forfuture participants.

“If you really want to win,you need a big cup of water todip the Twinkies in so theydissolve and you basically

drink them instead of eatthem,” said Hawks. “It was alot of fun last year!”

If you think you mighthave what it takes to triumphover the Twinkies call the ParkDistrict events line to sign upat 388-4513.
