The name Lusitania still reverberates around the world. Few remember her design or the four giant Parsons turbines that gave her greater speed than her predecessors. Or the fact that she was the winner of the Blue Riband, making the Trans-Atlantic crossing in less than five days.

...continued from front cover

Controversy still surrounds the event. Why had Lusitania’s captain not main-tained maximum speed or zigzagged as ordered? Was the vessel carrying wartime materiel along with her un-suspecting passengers? Or were they all just ordinary citizens caught up in the crosshairs of war? Whatever the truth, this event signaled a start of a new era for ships. It was May 7, 1915.

Called Into ServiceOcean liners were now being con-

verted to military ships, sporting coats of battleship gray paint. Some were even camouflaged including Mauritania, which had a diamond-pattern paint-job. Never very efficient because they burned more coal than military vessels, they served their nations well, nonetheless. Their hulls were reinforced and outfit-ted for weapons. Portholes were painted black and all running lights switched off. These liners also served as hospital ships and troop ships ferrying men to the front lines.

Captains carried sealed orders for ac-tions they were to take should war break out. What once were only vessels caught up in a challenge for passenger load and speed records, now faced off as enemies at war. When the last gun was silenced, a company like Cunard had lost 22 ships, more than half its total tonnage. This sad chapter was finally brought to a close.

The Statue of Liberty BeckonsWith the European continent in ruin,

immigrants turned their backs on their homelands. Driven by desperation and hope for a better life, they packed the below-decks steerage compartments. Within a week, they could stand on American shores. A month or more brought them to New Zealand and Aus-

tralia. The majority of these immigrants sailed past Lady Liberty then walked haltingly through the bureaucracy of Ellis Island. Twelve million arrived from 1892 to 1924. Ships had a new calling.

In the early 1920s, the public renewed its interest in ships. But American ships lost business to foreign carriers during Prohibition when it was forbidden for them to serve alcohol. The European vessels even offered overnight cruises from New York for $10 per person where the liquor flowed and a good time was had by all. Some historians identify these “booze cruises” as the inception of cruising as we know it today for they ultimately extended up to voyages of seven days or more.

A New Day DawnsThe end of the 1920s saw the Flapper,

economic ups and downs and the intro-duction of superliners like the 43,000-ton Ile de France, which carried 1,786 passengers. Travelers donned their fin-ery and took to the seas. Ship architects designed public spaces with soaring ceilings and shimmering chandeliers, replicating the world’s finest hotels.

Italy, Holland, Germany, England, America and France each put a unique signature on its ships. The Queen Mary, Normandie, Rex, Conte di Savoia and others all featured something revolu-tionary — indoor pools, telephones, greenhouses, fresh flowers, larger prom-enade decks, production shows, famous entertainers and more.

The Depression took a toll on every-thing, ships included. One called St. Louis made sad history when she was refused permission to disembark her Jewish refugees in Havana. The winds of war began to blow cold again. Soldiers

were being relocated around the world as nations prepared for war, transported usually by ship. On September 3, 1939, Britain’s Athenia was torpedoed then sank below the seas taking 112 to their watery grave.

World War II brought a halt to recre-ational cruising. Ships had become huge targets. The Queen Elizabeth slipped out of port in the dark of night, ultimately bound for New York according to sealed orders. German bombers flew over the Solent where they suspected she would be en route to Southampton. The British had purposely planted misinformation about her destination, and the Queen was able to steam on to American shores with only 400 crew members rather than the requisite 1,296.

Ultimately, luxurious liners were stripped of their comforts to accommo-date up to 15,000 soldiers. The Queen Mary transported 16,683 on one voyage alone in July 1943. Sadly, many great lin-ers were lost in battle.

When the war ended, ships provided transport for returning troops, war brides, and refugees. Prosperity set the world back on its feet and another era began for ship travel. Once again, people skipped up the gangways bound for ex-otic destinations while enjoying all that ships could offer. The only dark cloud now on the horizon was a shadow in the shape of an airplane. It, too, would irrefutably affect ship travel forever.
