Got to sit down with the Pirate Lord Captain Robert “Edward

Teach” Barbanegra at the Michiana Renaissance festival. And talk with

him some more about his interview and got to know more about the man

This character is an iconic pirate and adventurer of the Middle East and Persian Gulf. Through the tails he seems to encounters as much if not more of the supernatural than Captain Jack. Many of us who are old enough remember (one that I am old enough to) getting a taste of the hero from The Adventures of Sinbad in 1996. Then later down the line we got a tasteful animated movie Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas in 2002. The most recent install of the character from Syfy, Sinbad in 2012. All of these were great in their own way and took us to another part of the world to see pirates.

The Adventures of Sinbad was a Canadian Action/Adventure Fantasy television series which aired from 1996 to 1998. The series is a re-telling of the adventures of Sinbad from The Arabian Nights. Created by Ed Naha, it was filmed in southern Ontario, Canada and in Cape Town, South Africa. Each episode was filled with adventure as you saw different lands and the legends and myths carried the characters onwards. The show ran for two seasons, with a total of 44 episodes. With the success of the 2 seasons there was plans for a third season, but due to contract issues the season was dropped. Like many past shows you can find it online or even buy it and DVD.

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas is a great animated film produced by DreamWorks. Brad Pitt was the voice behind this devilish character for the movie. The plot is that he is framed by the goddess Eris (Goddess of Chaos) for the theft of the Book of Peace. To clear his innocence, he must travel to her realm at the end of the world to retrieve it and save the life of his childhood friend Prince Proteus, to whom put is trust in Sinbad by standing in for being sentenced to death. While his crew and he travels to the end of the world it is no easy task. The tail mixes in both Arabian and Greek mythology to spin a great story.

Tails of

SinbadTimber Gray Wolf

Syfy’s Sinbad aired for just a short time on their network in 2012. The 12-episode Sinbad follows the epic sea journey, which embarks on a quest to rid him of a curse and embrace his destiny. He is forced to flee from his home town of Basra. On board The Providence, an intriguing band of travelers is thrown together, including taciturn Norwegian sailor Gunnar, agile jewel-thief Rina, and haughty and aristocratic Nala, Completing the ship’s complement is the odd-ball cook and the cerebral doctor Anwar. Sadly the show was canceled, even thou there was a good fallowing for the show. Guess it must not have been in the right time slot…

These three samples of the story of Sinbad is just the tip of the iceberg, There are plenty of independent films, anime/manga and comic books, which some are not meant for eyes of children (as they say be careful of what you Google) . If you are a fan of the character and know a great story, either movie/book/comic, write into us so we can share to fellow fans.

This month, we are happy to be interviewing Bob Mills or better know as Pirate Lord Captain Robert “Edward Teach” Barbanegra – Lord of Lake Erie

Q How long have you been into the pirate life and want to be a pirate?

A: Started out as Pirate around 2004 with the AuGres Pirate Days – Would dress-up my sailboat “CRYSTA” as a Pirate ship an come in and pillage the village – LOL – We also had what we called our shipwreck shack where we sold swords, pistols an all that kinda stuff that Pirates want – We also signed on the wee ones as CRYSTA’s crew by having them sign a souvenir set of articles and gave them a gold coin and a free cup of grog (Red punch with 7-UP)

Q What made you want to be the Lord of Lake Erie?

A: I was asked to become a Lord for the Brethren of the Great Lakes when Black Rodger retired – Caught me by complete surprise – Guess the other Lords saw something that would benefit the Brethren.

QWhat might be the back story of your pirate persona?

A: Robert has a beard so long and black he is a scary sight. That men and boys upon seeing him would turn away and run from him in fright. So begins the story (some say legend) of Lord Captain Robert Barbanegra. While his name is Spanish in origin (Barbanegra translates as Blackbeard in Spanish) he hails from Falmouth, County Cornwall, England.

Starting his life at sea as a young lad crewing on sailing packets out of his boyhood home of Falmouth when in his 15th year saw the demise of the packet service, which left a huge gap in the local economy. Robert than took various positions on ships of various nations from French to Spanish and served, for many years, on several ships of differing tonnage and type. He worked his way through the ranks. And while commanding the supply ship São Rafael the War of Spanish Succession ended and he like many able seamen turned en masse to commerce raiding (piracy) in the Caribbean and the American eastern seaboard. Serving as crew for others Robert saved enough loot err… money to commission his own armed sloop the “CRYSTA”.

After she was commissioned he petitioned the City Fathers of Au Gres on August 1st in the year of our Lord 2009 to graciously (for a share of the profits) issue her Captain a letter of Marque’ making him a Privateer.

The Captain is a crack shot with a pistol and is fair with a cutlass and knife. Pistol dueling is one of his favorite pastimes. So watch year back.

Captain Robert is also considered a merchant, being, Owner and Master of Pirates Bay Trading Co. Owning a trading company he is able to sell merchandise he has acquired through legal, though sometimes fuzzy, means. There have been rumors some of his suppliers (read prey) are not covered by the letter of marque’ issued by the City of Au Gres government. Which, of course, is totally unfounded and unsubstantiated. (No witnesses - alive anyway – as dead men tell no tales)

Ye seez naw - Everyone believes the Pirate known as “Blackbeard” t’was beheaded by dat bastich Leftenant Maynard - well dem be jes stories ya knows fer it t’was also believed Edward Teach had a double ta stand in fer him at dat last battle to da death. Blackbeard

tried taken da King’s pardon but luved da piraten ways to much an could not giv it up. When he failed at keeping his self outta trouble fer turnen pirate again he devised a plan ta asume a new identity. So it goes - BLACKBEARD LIVES!!!!!!

To your stations mates, there be work to be done, with sword and pistol, and when we can fight no more, down to the magazine and up we go, for tis better to swim below with the fish then swing in the air and feed the crow” - Blackbeard 1715

Captain is the traditional customary title and form of address given to the person in charge of a vessel at sea. The word is derived from the Latin capitaneus (“chief” or “big man”) which is itself derived from the Latin word caput (“head”), thus the Captain is often rightly referred to by the crew as a “big man head” or “fat head” for brevity’s sake. Sometimes more correctly referred to as the ship’s Master.

Okay, that bein said, Most pirate captain’s were democratically elected by the ship’s crew, and possess qualities of leadership and courage that inspire their crew to follow them and rely on their acumen in battle. Daring and decisive during any engagement, the captain is commonly looked upon with respect, as a knowledgeable leader of men. During chase or in a battle the captain’s power is absolute and he can discipline anyone who disobeyed his orders. He also has life or death power over anyone taken as prisoner.

The captain has skills in navigation and seamanship, but first and foremost he has the type of personality required to hold together a rowdy crew of seamen. Other than battle, the captain usually would be delegating most of the everyday tasks to the Quartermaster or other junior officers. He needs to be overseeing all shipboard activity with the barest level of discipline necessary to keep an even keel.

Since most pirate Captain’s were elected, they could be replaced at any time by a majority vote of the crewmen. For example some captains were voted out and removed for not being as aggressive in the pursuit of prizes as the crew would have liked. And others were abandoned by their crews for being a little too bloodthirsty and brutal. A few were even murdered by their own men. Again, that bein said, remember I’m Captain because I own the Bloody Damn Boat!!!!

Q How is the Kraken Wagon coming along?

A: The “Kraken Wagon” is a 91 GMC Step Van converted to haul all our ship’s equipment (Cannons, Guns, sharp pointy things, all our Event tents, furniture, ect. ect. ect – LOL) And up to eight Mates along with “CRYSTA” (our parade float) – We have used it for six events and it is working out very well for us. It also serves as a gathering/rest spot to get away from the crowds when we are at (raiding) events – We just finished a complete tune-up an repair – We have started adding graphics and such. Working on it is a constant job as we modify and rearrange cargo layouts as our ship’s equipment changes and grows.

Q: What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?

A: Meeting new Mates and catching up with old ones. – The Michiana Renn Fest - August 29-30, 2015 on Kamm Island in Mishawaka. Indiana - is me favorite. It is laid back and comfortable – the setting is on a tree covered Island located along a river which makes a very nice setting for us Pirates.

Q: Do you vend at the events, if so what might your booth consist of.

A: No – Setting up and running our “Buccaneer Camp” at Events is hard work for me and my crew. Tried the vending thing years ago – to little return for a lot of hard work.

Q: What might be your “day job”

A: I’m retired from General Motors where I was a UAW Rep.

Q: Is there anything you would like to share with our readers?

A: Mates the “Brethren of the Great Lakes” is a great organization to work and play with. It’s members/mates are some of the most generous giving mates on the Great Lakes. It has been an honor and a joy to be a member and leader for it. Thanks mates for all of your support.

QWhat are your duties as being a pirate Lord consist of?

A: The Eastern Seaboard of the State be my domain by decree from the Lords of the Brethren of the Great lakes – So I try to be aware of what’s goin on in the way of Events and opportunities for the Brethren’s involvement

QHow long have you been into the pirate life?

A: I have been attending pirate and renaissance fairs for two years.

Q What made you want to be a pirate?

A: I became interested in the pirate life when I first saw Peter Pan as a child. The thing that rekindled that interest was when The Pirates of the Caribbean came out. After meeting Timber Grey Wolf at college and he convinced me to go to the Grand Haven pirate festival. I fell in love with the people and idea that I don’t have to grow up and be an adult all the time. This proved that it is alright to be a pirate as long as I have a job that can pay for all of my weapons.

QDoes your pirate prosoma have a back story?

A: I (Star~Dust) was working in a day care in Salem, MA. I spent my days looking after the youngsters of my neighbors and telling the tales of pirates. The townspeople didn’t like that I knew these stories and told them to the little ones. So I moved to Jamestown, VA. Where I could be closer to the port where my beloved pirates would make port and I could meet them and hear the stories strait from their mouths. I found work in a school where I could tell my stories and be around kids like I love to be. One Friday afternoon I took the kids for a walk down by the water to tell my favorite tale of Capitan Timber Grey Wolf. As I finished the story I turned to take the kids back to the school and I saw the crew of the Silver Moon walking off the ship. The next day I went to the port again to maybe see them depart. But when I arrived I saw something much better, Capitan Timber himself lying out on the beach. He asked me where my little ones are. A little confused by his statement I thought back he must have seenme yesterday with the kids. “Those aren’t my kids, I’m a teacher at the school.” His eyes told me that all the stories were real. “Can I come with you on the Silver Moon? I’m small you won’t even know I’m there!” I blurt out before I can stop myself. He laughs and says “I was going to ask if I could take you to a pint at the pub, but I like your way better. I am in the market for a first mate as it were.” So I joined the Crew of the Silver Moon as the First Mate.

Q Do you have a ship of your own and do you have a picture to share of it?

A: I do not have a ship of my own, but I am the First Mate on the Crew of the Silver Moon.

Q What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?

A: What I like the most about the events is the people and meeting new people and getting to know how they started out. My favorite event is the Grand Haven. That’s where it all started and I really enjoy the field where the event isheld at.

Q What might be our “day job”

A: I currently have 2 day jobs. I work in a Day Care during the day and I work at O’Reilly Auto Parts during the evening.

Q Is there anything you would like to share with our readers?

A: If you ever need a break from reality go to one event, no matter how small and absorb all that these people have to tell you. It is an awesome experience to meet and talk with the vendors and see how they got started. Go and check them out, even if you don’t enjoy the event, try the Root Jack and Steam Jack. That’s the best part of going.

QWhat drew you to the dawn the fins?

A) I’ve always loved mermaids and always pretended to be one when swimming. So once I learned that you could actually BE a mermaid, I knew it was my calling. I just love being able to see a whole different world while swimming underwater and that’s what draws me to be a mermaid

We are glad to feature our newest monthly article, Getting to meet and know some of the local fish. So enjoy the intveiw with...

Q What style of mermaid tail is your favorite to use and how many do you have?

A) as of right now I have two tails-soon to be three in a few weeks- I have a fabric tail that I made myself and a silicone tail that I had made to my measurements. My new tail is my own custom color design with multiple fins and silicone as well. We call it the “sunset” tail. My favorite tail to use. That’s difficult. I love my silicone tails because they feel so realistic. Just like a fish! Plus when I swim I look like I have real fins. I love my fabric on however because it is lightweight and easy to get on and off in a hurry. To give you an idea; a silicone tail (out of the water) can weight between 15-50lbs while a fabric tail can be under 10lbs. In water though, they are weightless.

Q Which of the Great Lakes might we find you a swimming?

A) you would be able to find me in Lake Michigan as I love the beaches and there’s a good long stretch of it to find the perfect spot. I’m not shy of cold water however, so if I get the chance I might swim wherever I can.

Q Do you belong to a waterclan or a lone swimmer?

A)I have belonged to the Mermaids of the Great Lakes clan and am still apart of it. But I prefer to call myself a lone swimmer. I do have mermaid friends all over michigan and the United States. I have even met up with a Georgia mermaid, Nerine the arctic mermaid, and swam in natural springs that only reach 68 degrees.

Q What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?

A) I like to see all the people. The kids are so curious and love everything about the festivals. The vendors are amazing and I have made many of friends from them. I love the Michigan Pirate Festival in Grand Haven, MI. They are all about doing it for the kids and making sure it is fun and new for all members of the family. Plus it’s a week long event culminating in a large festival for the last weekend!

Q What might be our “day job” when walking upon draw land?

A) My “dry land job” isn’t all that exciting. I am an author, a model, and I make craft items to sell. Most of the crafts are just blankets, cards, and random little things that I think of and decided to make.

Q: Is there anything you would like to share with our readers?

A) Never give up on your dreams! It keeps you going. If I had given up on being a mermaid I would have never realized I could actually become one. And if I hadn’t of gotten into the mermaid-ing game, I never would have become a model and given myself a confidence booster. But remember too, mermaid-ing LOOKS easy. It takes a lot of time to get used to swimming with your legs bound together. It’s not something you can easily just jump right into. So be careful and always swim with a buddy. Also, on a professional note: I am for hire for professional gigs. You can find me on Facebook. Thank you so much for voting for me as Siren of the Month!
