11:00 a.m. - Race starts; team cyclists ride to Buckeye.

1:30 p.m. - Post-race picnic,live music, socializingand tales of triumphand woe.

The Great GreenbrierRiver Race in Mar-linton attracts partic-

ipants from all over thecountry. Whether theycompete to beat their ownrecords or just for fun, rac-ers invade the water, trailsand roads of PocahontasCounty to paddle, peddleand run to the finish line.

For one family, the raceis an event that brings themtogether as competitors anda cheering section. Davidand Colleen Nordeck, ofBruceton Mills, and theirextended family have beencompeting in the race forthe past five years and planto make this year theirsixth.

“The age range of partic-ipants is from 14 to 65 andwe have support rangingfrom ages seven to 85,”Colleen said. “Three sistersparticipate, myself, 63;Judy Clister, 60; and KarenClister, 56. Karen’s hus-band, Larry Lindley, 64;my husband, David, age65; our son, Dan Nordeck,37; my daughter-in-law,Debbie Rosenberger, 42;and my granddaughter,Sydney, 14, also partici-pate.”

The family members onthe sidelines are as impor-

tant as the racers becausethey keep the team going asthey travel through the gru-eling race. Seven-year-oldSamantha Rosenberger and85-year-old Virginia Clisterare joined by SammiRosenberger, Carole andRonald Umbel and MarkRosenberger in the cheersection.

The family makes therace a family vacation andrents a cabin at Watoga forthe weekend.

Participating in the racehas its ups and downs, butit doesn’t deter the familyfrom returning each year.

“Last year my husband,David, was participating ona team as a biker,” Colleenrecalled. “I was behind himbiking and as I crossed thefinish line, my grand-daughter, Sammi, yelled atme that “Pappy” wreckedand was hurt and bleeding.I ran straight across the fin-ish line to where he waswiping the blood off hisarms and face. He was notseriously hurt, but lookedterrible. The people at thetourism office let him usetheir restroom to clean up.

“After that, “Pappy”earned the name “Crashand Burn” from all thegrandchildren and family,”she continued. “He’s agood sport about it.”

With family strewn about

throughout West Virginia,Virginia, Maryland andPennsylvania, the racegives them an opportunityto come together for an an-nual reunion.

“This is a great family

weekend for us,” Colleensaid. “We like to involvethe children as much aspossible and this is a greatopportunity for them to beexposed to this type ofevent.”
