Special shape balloons take center stage at the festival“Celebrating Maine Farms” is the theme of the 18th annual Great Falls Balloon Festival this year, and as usual, all of the hot air balloons at the festival are breathtaking when inflated. Each year the festival committee invites several special shape balloons to join the more traditional oval envelopes. This year, look for the Old McDonald’s Farm balloon and a jack-in-the-box shaped balloon called JACK!

Michael Caccavale is the owner of the Old McDonald’s Farm balloon. The balloon was manufactured in 2004; it took 880 hours to produce the balloon over five months. Its

first flight was on June 3, 2004. The balloon envelope when inflated stands 61 feet high, 55 feet wide, and 55 feet in length. The weight of the envelope is 900 lbs. It has a classic basket and uses one 15-gallon and two 18-gallon tanks of fuel.JACK!, a hot air balloon shaped like a jack-in-the-box and manufactured in 2002, is owned by pilot Colin Graham and based in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The balloon is 12 stories tall, 600 pounds in weight, and is 110,000 cubic feet and 120 feet tall. JACK! flies over an Aerostar Classic “2” basket with two 18-gallon tanks and one 20-gallon tank. Fundraising EffortThe Great Falls Balloon Festival Board of Directors would like to inform our visitors of a fund raising effort this year.

In an effort to offset increased operational cost, and to generate additional funding for the 30+ non-profit groups that make this festival possible, we will be organizing donation collections at each entrance to Simard-Payne Memorial Park throughout the weekend. Donations are strictly voluntary, and are not required. All collections will be divided among the festival and each non-profit group.

Big Blue Big Blue is a family band from Midcoast Maine. They play Delta Blues, Country Blues, Jazz, Rock and Cajun.

Rotary Duck Race Sponsored by the Lewiston/Auburn Rotary Club

The Auburn-Lewiston Rotary Breakfast Club will present a Great Rubber Ducky Race at noon on Sunday. Nearly 2,000 ducks will be sold during the festival. The ducks will be dumped into the canal from Union Water Power Station and will float their way to the finish line at the Bates Mill gate. The first duck to cross the finish line will earn $1,000 for its owner. Prizes will be awarded for other place winners. The money raised is to be donated to charities for programs specific to children at risk with various needs in the Auburn-Lewiston community.

THE JUKE JOINT DEVILSThe Juke Joint Devils are an old time, hard driving and swinging blues band that never fails to get the crowd rocking. They play a style of blues that goes back to the day when home entertainment systems didn’t exist and folks went out to the local juke joint to be entertained. Their music is rooted in the blues of Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans with a little modern day tempering of the West Coast Swing style of blues. Featuring Tommy O’Connell on vocals and harmonica, Gerry Byrne on the big “doghouse” bass, Mike VanSumren on guitar and vocals and Steve Kaulback on the drum kit they bring many years of experience to the stage. For this year’s balloon festival performance they will be joined by Eric Green, Maine’s mainstay of New Orleans style blues, on keyboard and vocals. When the “Devils” get going toes will be

tapping and the joint will be jumping. The guiding principle of their music is that it’s all about the groove, all the time.

Fairview Community Rock Band

Fairview Community Rock Band: This is year 3 of the Fairview Communtiy Rock Band. The idea for this group was borne out of Camp of Rock, when a parent of one of the kids mentioned how they had wished they could’ve played in a musical group like that when they were kids. We decided to make it happen, selling the idea as a group for kids, but encouraging parents to dig out their keyboards, guitars, and saxes. After last season, the adults in the group committed to continue on, and met on a weekly basis. They named themselves Be Seven, and make up the bulk of this year’s group, along with their kids, and a few newcomers.

Festival Headliner

JAMES MONTGOMERYAugust 22, Simard Payne Lewiston

In 1970, while attending Boston University, Montgomery formed the James Montgomery Band. His inimitable (oh yeah, he majored in English) harmonica playing combined with his incredibly energetic live shows led to the band’s quick ascension on the New England music scene. Within two years, the James Montgomery band was among the hottest acts in Boston along with J. Geils and Aerosmith, and they were quickly signed to a multi-album deal with Capricorn Records.

Montgomery has toured with many major artists, including Aerosmith, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, the Allman Brothers, Steve Miller and others. He has jammed on stage with B.B.King, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Jr. Wells, James Cotton, Charlie Daniels, Bonnie Raitt, Greg Allman, Laverne Baker, Patti LaBelle, and Peter Wolf among others, including an impromptu session with Mick Jagger at New York’s “Trax”.

Over the years Montgomery’s band has been a springboard for many musicians. Members of his band have included Billy Squire, Wayne Kramer (MC-5), Jeff Golub (Rod Stewart), Jim McCarty (Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels), Nunzio Signore Bo Diddley), Jeff Pevar (Ray Charles Orchestra, Crosby, Stills & Nash), Bobby Chouinard (drummer with Ted Nugent, Squire and Robert Gordon), Jeff Levine (Joe Cocker), Aerosmith’s Tom Gambel, and many others.

When blues legend James Montgomery plays the harmonica, he “brings it on home”. Whether it’s recording with Kid Rock, sitting in with Gregg Allman, or fronting his hot band of thirty years, Montgomery plays with authority. While growing up in Detroit he learned first-hand from the masters - James Cotton, John Lee Hooker, and Jr. Wells - at the legendary “Chessmate.” Over the years, he’s carried on in the tradition and continues to be a vital presence in Blues as one of the most dynamic performers on the scene. YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS!!!!

Moon DawgsIn their early teens the Moon Dawgs began their career in 1963 in a basement with an old upright piano and an overturned ice bucket for drums using sawed off broom handles for drumsticks. Their first gig took place in a small second floor dance hall for a crowd of 20 people.

Practice and perseverance paid off. They

played to sellout crowds from Lewiston City Hall (Pal Hops) to Portland, Augusta, Bangor, Skowhegan, Waterville and other East Coast cities. They toured the Canadian Maritime Provinces to as far as Sydney, Nova Scotia and Glace Bay. They opened shows with Dave Clark Five, the Kingsmen (Louie Louie), Freddie and the Dreamers, and the Searchers. Recently, they performed in the West Palm Beach ,Florida area.

After nearly forty-five years of performing the Moon Dawgs are still entertaining crowds of all ages. “We are looking forward to this event”, said Bob Roy, drummer. It is about our culture, heritage, and a history of music and the many talented musicians who entertained the Lewiston-Auburn area and various Maine communities for decades.

MOTOR BOOTY AFFAIRThe potent mixture that Motor Booty Affair are unique simply by the energy they put into entertaining the crowd, from their eye-popping onstage attire, to their between-song antics, to their flat-out funky get down. They are a party band in the truest sense: when they play, there’s always a party.

The DistributorsThe Distributors is Lewiston-Auburn’s new “Power Trio” formed this past winter with three musicians that have been performing around Central Maine for many years. Robert Washington (as Elvis Presley)Born in 1958 in St. Louis, MO, Robert Washington was raised in Cape Girardeau, MO. His first memories of Elvis® were of watching his movies on television. He also remembers hearing “Jail House Rock” on the radio and being impressed with the King’s style. From then on, he was a loyal Presley fan.

In 1977, while Robert was serving his country in the Marine Corps, he found himself connected to Elvis® as the singer died on Robert’s 19th birthday. For the next few years, Robert sang along with Elvis® and practiced his moves for fun. With the support of his wife, he added a microphone to his stereo system and performed only for close friends.

In 1983, Robert entertained on stage for the f irst time in

Waukegan, IL. His rendition of “Don’t Be Cruel” went over so well that he ended up singing for the rest of the evening. That was the beginning of his career.

Since then, Robert has competed in the Images of Elvis® Competition several times, finishing in the top 3 every time.

Museum L-A to host book signingMuseum L-A will be hosting a book signing event with David A. Sargent on Saturday, August 21st from 1:00 pm. to 4:00 pm with a brief presentation of his book, “Remembering Lewiston-Auburn on the Mighty Androscoggin”, at 2:00 pm.

The museum will be open free of charge from 10:00 to 4:00 as part of the annual Lewiston-Auburn Balloon Festival Celebration. Complimentary tours of the museum will also be available.

David A. Sargent is a native of Auburn, Maine. He has pursued a lifelong interest in writing and history which was built on the Maine-flavored poetry and journalism of his father, brother, and aunt. In the 1960’s he was a general assignment reporter for the Lewiston Daily Sun. In recent years, he founded, edited and published Business Focus, a monthly newspaper. Sargent has carefully chronicled the history of Maine communities in his “River Views” columns which have appeared twice monthly in the Sun Journal since 2005. He presents this collection

from the early industrial days to the modern splendor of the balloon festival in “Remembering Lewiston-Auburn on the Mighty Androscoggin.”

Sargent lives with his wife, Judy, on their historic family farm built by his great-grandfather after the Civil War. They have two daughters and six grandchildren.

For further information contact Museum L-A at 207-333-3881.
