February2014 Funerals: 4 February Jean Williams Great Easton

Rector’s Letter March 2015

There is photograph in my parents’ album which shows a very young Stephen Bishop. I am sitting on my grandfather’s wall, with two of my cousins, watching Nuneaton Carnival process by just a few feet in front of us. There is look of pure, innocent joy on my face. I was clearly glad to see the floats, to hear the marching bands. I was not yet jaded. One of my cousins, slightly older has clearly. seen it all before and appears bored, cynical and already. There is another (this time mental) image which comes to my mind when I think of the word ‘procession’. I recall one particular evening spent with a fluent Russian speaker who was in the habit, during the Soviet era, of listening to Russian radio to maintain her proficiency in the language. On this occasion she translated for me as a parade of high-stepping soldiers, tanks and missiles made their way past the Kremlin. The martial music which interspersed the broadcast needed no translation. I am reminded of these two images of procession as we approach Holy Week at the end of this month. Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan remind us in their book ‘The Last Week’ that the message of Jesus was, in its day, profoundly prophetic and counter-cultural. They write that the Palm Sunday procession many churches will remember in their worship on Palm Sunday was in fact an essentially prophetic protest against Roman power. Jesus enters Jerusalem from the east, from the Mount of Olives which is to the East of the City. He is depicted as coming in humility on the back of a donkey. He, and his good news of God’s kingdom, are portrayed as being welcomed by the people. Simultaneously, Pontius Pilate enters Jerusalem from the West in a procession of a very different kind. He rides at the head of a column of Roman legionnaires, symbolic of the martial and political might of Rome. He called himself Son of God as Rome’s emperor. His display, not unlike the old Soviet parades, seeks to show force and maintain order. What is coming is an inevitable collision between the values of God’s Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Man. Borg and Crossan write, “The two processions embody the central conflict of the week that led to Jesus’s crucifixion.” Borg and Crossan tell us that this is an image created that is fitting for what is to come, a collision of processions. In the midst of the crowded holy city, they are headed for the intersection we call the cross, where evil and good face off, the kingdom of the world and the Kingdom of God come face to face. The power of the empire and the power of God meet in the person of Jesus. Borg and Crossan present us and our own time with a haunting question with which to approach Holy Week. Which procession are we in? And what are we holding in our hands? Palms and palm crosses or swords and shields? And what will we be our song? What, ultimately, are the things of value to us? In what do we delight? Where do we, and our world, place our energies and our trust?

Lead me from death to life,

from falsehood to truth;

lead me from despair to hope,

from fear to trust;

lead me from hate to love,

from war to peace.

Let peace fill our heart,

our world, our universe.

Gardeners’ Corner March 2015

By Alistair Peak of PGS

The spring bulbs are strutting their stuff, giving us all a glow with a glimpse of more things to come, especially as the clocks go forward this month.

It may be a little early to start seed sowing out of doors, however if you are lucky enough to have a green house or some form of protection in the form of a cold frame you can start sowing some early vegetables, salads or even hardy flowers. As the fingers tap on the keyboard we have just experienced our first really cold spell including snow! The hardy amongst us may feel inspired to work in the garden despite the cold weather, if you can finish tidying through your borders especially the herbaceous plants but hold back though from cutting back Penstemons which are a won-derful herbaceous plant providing many months of flowering in the summer. As long as Penstemons have a well drained site they are a must have plant but do watch out as they can put on lots of growth. The important thing is not to prune back in the Autumn but to leave the top growth on to give winter protection, then in late April/early May prune back to about 4inches (10cm) from the ground to encourage new growth.

As with all pruning of herbaceous plants, roses and shrubs, the key to the success of the plant is also to feed, remember to do this at the start of the growing season. Avoid over feeding late in the growing season other wise plants will make too much lush growth and plants will not have hardened off and are more prone to pest and diseases. Weeds may be only small at present, if you can nip them in the bud ie get them removed before they come in to flower and set seed you will be saving yourself a lot of work as the seasons move on. I appreciate that perennial weeds require more work but be persistent with them, it will pay dividends in the end.

Plants that are grown for their winter interest should have given you a good show; examples could include Cornus (Dogwoods), Salix (willows), Rubus cockburnianus (Ornmental Bramble). If you have not grown these before and have some space plant some but be careful as they can wander a little but are worth their lovely stems in the winter. To continue the cycle of show each winter they need some regular pruning and now is the time to do it. Prune back to the frame work ie normally 3 to 4inches off the ground.

Alistair’s Tip: As young herbaceous plants start growing do keep a watch out for slugs and snails attacking the young shoots, If possible by digging through your borders you will disturb the pests and the wildlife may munch on them before they attack your plants.

Avoiding mud this time of year is difficult but Brian managed it for our January walk. Setting of from Great Bowden and after a short distance on grassy tracks we soon found ourselves on paths and alleyways, eventually leading to the middle of Harborough, from

here we followed the river through Welland Park, at the end of the park, we headed North for a short distance before joining the canal towpath (where we were lucky to have sightings of a Kingfisher) for approx. one mile back to

Great Bowden.

Our next walk will be on Wednesday 18th. March. Meet at Great Easton Village hall at 9.30.

General Synod Report November 2014 The General Synod met in November at Church House in Westminster to play the final part in the legislation to enable women to become bishops. We watched as the documents were signed by the Archbishops and the Chairs and Vice Chairs of the Houses of Clergy and Laity and counter signed by the Registrar. A dignified silence was kept through this legal process. In his presidential address, the Archbishop of Canterbury reminded us that the Anglican Communion faced challenges ahead and we needed to talk to those with whom we disagreed. Legislative business included certain changes of simplification to the Church Representation Rules. A draft report was presented to Synod on Guidelines for the Professional Conduct of the Clergy. This raised various questions, including the confidentiality of the confessional. We listened to a panel discussion on the subject of Violence against Religious Minorites in Iraq and Syria, followed by a question and answer session. Members of the panel included the first Muslim to address the Synod, the Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the UK, the Joint Executive director of the Anglican Alliance and the Bishop of Leeds, The Rt Revd Nick Baines, whom we in Leicester remember from his days in this Diocese. We need to pray for those Christians who are persecuted for their faith. A report from the Council for Christian Unity on the Anglican-Methodist Covenant was dis-cussed and a motion carried that we should continue to plan together at local and regional level. Recommendations of the report included the need for the Methodist Church to consid-er afresh the role of episcopacy and for the Anglican Church to fully recognise the ministry of Methodist ministers. A Diocesan Synod Motion from Leeds on the Spare Room Subsidy was passed overwhelm-ingly, asking the Church of England Mission and Public Affairs Council to work with the Government and those in the housing sector to ensure suitable housing for vulnerable people without increasing levels of debt.

Thursday 5th March is the date of our Annual General Meeting when we review the club constitution, elect officers and committee members. and pay the annual subscription. The business meeting will be followed by a quiz and the usual refreshments which will be provided by Mrs M Cook and Mrs J Snow.

At the December meeting we were feeling replete and well satisfied following an excellent meal provided by Elaine and Elizabeth Hankey. Then we were entertained by Mr Ken McElhone with his mechanical music boxes. Members were fascinated by his Christmas selection and we all enjoyed the talk and the singing. In January we were given a stimulating talk by Karen Dilley on diet and digestive problems. We were left with much to ponder and returned home determined to at least chew our food more carefully. The vote of thanks was given by Cathy Gibb. In February we gathered our courage and went to our meeting to encounter Joe of Bugtopia. Although we were somewhat trepidacious we were encouraged by Joe’s enthusiasm and we were soon handling large stick insects, hissing cockroaches, tarantulas, a boa constrictor, a very large rat and finally a skunk! At the same time we were regaled with many interesting facts about the creatures and many common myths were disproved. We enjoyed a stimulating, educational, fascinating and a really fun evening.

On 14th January 2015 we spent a very enjoyable evening having a superb meal at the Fox & Hounds, Tugby for our Annual Dinner. Our normal business was taken care of in swift time after which a presentation of the trophy was made to Marilyn Switzer, for the highest number of points gained from the competition that takes place at our regular monthly meetings. We always enjoy a good turnout for this social occasion when members catch up on what everyone has been up to over the festive season and receive the programme of events arranged by the Committee for the ensuing year. The following week some of our members were given a most interesting and informative tour of the Innovation Centre in Market Harborough conducted by their Senior Centre Manager, Mick Judge. We were also treated to the most delicious refreshments from their onsite cafe! Harborough is most fortunate in having such a fantastic facility available to those budding entrepreneurs wanting to ‘test the water’ before moving onto their own premises. Our next meeting is being held in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday 11th March 2015 when a cake demonstration is being given by Sarah Hughes. We would be delighted to welcome anyone interested in becoming a member of our friendly and lively group.

Blaston News The Women’s Worldwide Day of Prayer service for 2015 will take place here in Blaston church on Friday 6 March starting at 1:45 pm. This year the theme is the women of the Bahamas and it should be very stimulating. Please come to support the ladies of the parish in their portrayal of Bahamian lifestyle and culture. Light refreshments will be served after the service. The altar rail cushions have been repaired by Nini Murray-Philipson to overcome the damage caused by mice. Thank you very much for this work. NEWS FROM BRINGHURST

The new chancel heaters, which were installed in time for our Advent service, have really come into their own during the cold and frosty mornings and will hopefully show a saving on our electricity bill, as they only need turning on shortly before a service to warm the chancel. Come and feel the difference for yourselves. St Nicholas has also had a a very generous donation of a new sound system. It is incredibly neat and can be activated from any point in the church by an i-pad on which the play list is held. The sound and volume are good and, although the system will never replace a “live” organist, it does mean we can continue with music to support our hymns now that Sheila Douche has retired. This is another reason to visit St Nicholas at 9 am on a third Sunday to hear for yourselves.
