OFFICE OF PASTOR – THREE WORDS

• Pastors – Eph. 4.11

• Greek poimanas – Shepherds

• Elders – Titus 1.5

• Greek presbuteros – Elders, seniors

• Bishops – Philippians 1.1

• Greek episcopos – Overseers

OFFICE OF PASTOR – JOB DESCRIPTION

• 1 Peter 5.1-4 – Peter uses all three words to describe this one office

• Elders - Presbuteros

• Shepherd (feed) the flock which is among you

• Serving as Overseers

OFFICE OF PASTOR – ALWAYS PLURAL

• Notice Peter mentions “elders” not “elder” or “pastor.”

• Always more than one – Philip. 1.1; Acts 14.23; Acts 20.17

OFFICE OF PASTOR – QUALIFICATIONS

• 1 Timothy 3.1-7; Titus 1.5-9

• Husband of one wife

• Children in submission

THE WARNINGS…

• Paul to the Ephesian elders – Acts 20.28-30

• John concerning Diotrephes – 3 John 9-10

THE ERROR…

• History tells us the term “Bishop” had become distinct from “Elder” by the end of the first century.

• The pattern of one “monarchical” Bishop supported by a group of elders became the norm

THE ERROR…

• Ignatius of Antioch:

• "Plainly therefore we ought to regard the bishop as the Lord Himself" — Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians 6:1.

• "your godly bishop" — Epistle of Ignatius to the Magnesians 2:1.

THE ERROR…

• Ignatius of Antioch:

• "the bishop presiding after the likeness of God and the presbyters after the likeness of the council of the Apostles, with the deacons also who are most dear to me, having been entrusted with the diaconate of Jesus Christ" — Epistle of Ignatius to the Magnesians 6:1.

THE ERROR…

• From that day to this, the error persists:

• Eventually “Arch” Bishops, Cardinals, and the Pope

• The “Pastor” over “deacons” or “elders”

THE SOLUTION?

• Go back to the New Testament and…

• (2 Tim 1:13 NKJV) Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.
