Trafalgar Square was created to commemorate admiral Nelson's great victory over Napoleon's navy at Trafalgar in 1805. It took many years for the project to be completed and it wasn't until 1843 that the 5 meter statue of Nelson was finally placed on top of the column. A year earlier 14 brave people sat and had dinner on top of it.

Nowadays the only people to climb the column are stipple jacks who clean off the pigeon droppings. On the north side of the square is the National Gallery which houses one of the world's great art collections on the site of what used to be the Royal Mews.

Every Christmas people flock to the square to sing carols under the fir-tree donated by the city of Oslo and the square is also the venue for political demonstrations and for seeing in the New Year.
