The Exam Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is held by Educational Testing
Services (ETS.com). GRE is the window to all the top-line technical courses
as well as many of the top-line management courses worldwide.
The computer based examination can be taken through the year. The test
consists of five sections, viz.:
1) Analytical Writing Assessment
Analysis of an Issue: Essay writing for 30 minutes on an issue of
general interest presented to the test taker
Analysis of an Argument - presented to the test taker in 30 minutes
2) Verbal Reasoning
20 Questions on Sentence Completion, Reading Comprehension,
Critical Reading to be answered in 30 minutes
3) Quantitative Reasoning
20 Questions on Quantitative Comparison, Problem Solving & Data
Interpretation to be answered in 35 minutes
4) Verbal Reasoning
20 Questions on Sentence Completion, Reading Comprehension,
Critical Reading to be answered in 30 minutes
5) Quantitative Reasoning
20 Questions on Quantitative Comparison, Problem Solving & Data
Interpretation to be answered in 35 minutes
Scores are distributed in the range of 130 to 170 for Verbal as well as
Quantitative section.

consideration the importance of vocabulary building for GRE, and are

impart a unique approach to learning vocabulary.
The Preparation GRE is highly conceptual and analytical in nature. The performance in the first quantitative section determines the level of difficulty for the second, and similarly for the verbal ability sections. Thus while the test is not fully computer adaptive, it is sectionally computer adaptive. Analytical Writing Assessment section evaluates the test-taker’s ability to present his/her perspective on an issue in a cogent and persuasive manner. One needs to work on building arguments with lucid reasoning and effective presentation. In case of Argument Analysis, the test-taker is expected to evaluate an argument for its validity and tenability. A good deal of practice with professional evaluation surely helps a candidate perform well in the section. Quantitative Ability section tests the thoroughness of understanding of mathematical concepts , and requires a student to focus on the nature of numbers. While elaborate calculations are intentionally omitted, comprehension and analysis of questions is highly evaluated. One needs to understand concepts and their application in all their possibilities. This not only requires a good deal of understanding of the concepts, but also intensive practice of varied applications. In Verbal section, there is a distinct stress on the contextual understanding of words and the usage of words. With 10 questions in each verbal section on sentence completion and sentence equivalence; understanding words beyond mere meaning becomes an indispensable competency. Questions on Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning test student’s ability to analyze the text and identify the crux of the idea presented.
