Acknowledgement of Country We respectfully acknowledge the Indigenous Elders, custodians, their descendants and kin of this land past and present.

Syllabus This unit introduces students to the fundamentals common to art and design practices. The aim of the unit is to increase awareness of possibilities and to equip students with conceptual tools that can be used for generating, developing and refining art and design ideas. As well the unit develops analytical skills for trouble-shooting when an art or design work is not developing as intended.

Introduction Welcome to VAR100 Art and Design Fundamentals. In this unit you will be introduced to the fundamental elements and principles of art and design and gain an understanding of how they can be utilised to communicate ideas.

You will explore the relationships between the basic elements of art and design and discover how the arrangement of these can affect an image and its meaning. By understanding the elements and principles of art and design as individual components you will gain an awareness of how they can be utilised in a myriad of configurations to express different possibilities. The focus will be on visualising your ideas and applying the fundamentals of art and design to successfully communicate these using a variety of materials and methods.

Clear documentation and presentation of your visual and material process is important to your success in VAR100. It is essential to allocate adequate time to complete the program. In the case of this unit, the allocation for project work, research and other related activities is 10 hours. This is the minimum requirement.

Ensure that you are aware of the submission dates for this unit and allow adequate time to complete the various tasks including the research of artists/designers and artworks that support your practice.

We hope you enjoy the unit.

Unit Learning Outcomes All graduates of Curtin University achieve a set of nine graduate attributes during their course of study. These tell an employer that, through your studies, you have acquired discipline knowledge and a range of other skills and attributes which employers say would be useful in a professional setting. Each unit in your course addresses the graduate attributes through a clearly identified set of learning outcomes. They form a vital part in the process referred to as assurance of learning. The learning outcomes tell you what you are expected to know, understand or be able to do in order to be successful in this unit. Each assessment for this unit is carefully designed to test your achievement of one or more of the unit learning outcomes. On successfully completing all of the assessments you will have achieved all of these learning outcomes.

Your course has been designed so that on graduating we can say you will have achieved all of Curtin's Graduate Attributes through the assurance of learning process in each unit.

On successful completion of this unit students can: Graduate Attributes addressed1 Identify the principles of Art and Design to enable the solutions of visual problems

2 Develop and apply skills to demonstrate an understanding of Art and Design principles

3 Solve visual problems using logical and creative reflection

Marking Criteria

Pass requirements

There are three folio submissions required for assessment in this unit. You must submit and be assessed for all three submissions and achieve a final grade of 50% or more to pass the unit.

Fair assessment through moderation

Moderation describes a quality assurance process to ensure that assessments are appropriate to the learning outcomes, and that student work is evaluated consistently by assessors. Minimum standards for the moderation of assessment are described in the Assessment and Student Progression Manual, available from policies.curtin.edu.au/policies/teachingandlearning.cfm

Late assessment policy

This ensures that the requirements for submission of assignments and other work to be assessed are fair, transparent, equitable, and that penalties are consistently applied.

1. All assessments students are required to submit will have a due date and time specified on this Unit Outline. 2. Students will be penalised by a deduction of ten percent per calendar day for a late assessment submission (eg a mark

equivalent to 10% of the total allocated for the assessment will be deducted from the marked value for every day that the assessment is late). This means that an assessment worth 20 marks will have two marks deducted per calendar day late. Hence if it was handed in three calendar days late and given a mark of 16/20, the student would receive 10/20. An assessment more than seven calendar days overdue will not be marked and will receive a mark of 0.

Assessment extension

A student unable to complete an assessment task by/on the original published date/time (eg examinations, tests) or due date/time (eg assignments) must apply for an assessment extension using the Assessment Extension form (available from the Forms page at students.curtin.edu.au/administration/) as prescribed by the Academic Registrar. It is the responsibility of the student to demonstrate and provide evidence for exceptional circumstances beyond the student's control that prevent them from completing/submitting the assessment task.

The student will be expected to lodge the form and supporting documentation with the unit coordinator before the assessment date/time or due date/time. An application may be accepted up to five working days after the date or due date of the assessment

Academic Integrity (including plagiarism and cheating)

Any conduct by a student that is dishonest or unfair in connection with any academic work is considered to be academic misconduct. Plagiarism and cheating are serious offences that will be investigated and may result in penalties such as reduced or zero grades, annulled units or even termination from the course.

Plagiarism occurs when work or property of another person is presented as one's own, without appropriate acknowledgement or referencing. Submitting work which has been produced by someone else (e.g. allowing or contracting another person to do the work for which you claim authorship) is also plagiarism. Submitted work is subjected to a plagiarism detection process, which may include the use of text matching systems or interviews with students to determine authorship.

Cheating includes (but is not limited to) asking or paying someone to complete an assessment task for you or any use of unauthorised materials or assistance during an examination or test.

For more information, including student guidelines for avoiding plagiarism, refer to the Academic Integrity tab in Blackboard or academicintegrity.curtin.edu.au.

Additional information As stated above, plagiarism is a serious offence. To avoid self-plagiarism, do not submit work that has been previously submitted for assessment in the same unit or in any other unit. If there is any detection of plagiarism during the assessment process of your assignment, you may be asked to offer an explanation. You may also be required to address the questionable sections and re-submit a corrected folio. This will cause some delay in completing the assessment of your assignment. If the level of plagiarism is deemed to be of a serious nature, the Unit Coordinator is required to register an official report that remains on your student record. Further cases of plagiarism may then be treated as Academic Misconduct and this may affect your ability to graduate.     HEALTH & SAFETY The work you will undertake in this unit of study may involve using materials and/or processes that could be hazardous to your health. It is your responsibility as a student to ensure you are aware of the materials you use and minimise any hazards they may pose. Please refer to the unit Study Guide for further information regarding Health & Safety procedures.     PRESENTATION AND SUBMITTING FOLIO FOR ASSESSMENT The format of your presentation should be well considered for the assessment of your work. It is expected that you learn to develop good documentation skills with digital photography to best present your work for online assessment. A submission which shows your working methodology and clearly presents your ideas and outcomes will help to present your work at its best.   It is a requirement that you sign and attach the Assignment Coversheet > Declaration and submit with your work for each assessment. The Assignment Coversheet can be downloaded from the Assessment Drop Box link in your unit.   All project work and items for each assessment are submitted online via the unit ASSESSMENT DROP BOX wherever possible. Please refer to information detailed below:   ONLINE BLACKBOARD > ASSESSMENT DROP BOX When submitting your work for assessment, make sure you include all of the information in one single file and name the file with YourName_VAR100_AssessmentItem. The preferred file formats for your submission are either:  PowerPoint presentation (or similar), Word doc (or similar) or Adobe pdf file. Note: work submitted as multiple files will be returned to you to be re-submitted within a specified time-frame as a single file. If re-submission does not meet the required date as requested assessment penalties may be applied.   Presentation and Documentation: To ensure you present your best images for assessment we suggest you experiment with different settings, especially as your intention should be to convey the best possible record of your work. The assessment of your work is compromised if the quality of images is poor: e.g. out of focus, badly lit, low resolution (150dpi recommended), or have been digitally manipulated. It is appropriate to crop images to reduce any background interference. Use a neutral background like a white wall or black/white paper to place your work on before photographing.   Visual Diary: You can scan your visual diary or use a digital camera to document the appropriate pages.     Submitting Assignments in exceptional circumstances: If for some reason you are unable to submit via the Assessment Drop Box please submit via the following method:   Email Send your work as an attachment directly to your tutor's Curtin email address using your Curtin provided student email account. Make sure you clearly identify the unit and assessment item in the subject area of your email.

Enrolment

It is your responsibility to ensure that your enrolment is correct - you can check your enrolment through the eStudent option on OASIS, where you can also print an Enrolment Advice.
