A MOM ON A MiSSiON As if running a successful business and being mom to four children

wasn’t enough of a challenge, longtime Grayhawk resident, Lesley Roberston is embarking on another huge undertaking. While doing some web surfing last year, Lesley noticed and ad that caught her eye. She clicked on it and staring back at her was a photo of a child with Down syndrome. Then she clicked again and saw something that would change her life and that will eventually change the life of many others.

What all those clicks led Lesley to was the website for GiGi’s Playhouse, a “Down Syndrome Achievement Center” with many locations throughout the U.S. (and even one in Mexico). She knew immediately that a place like this was needed here. She knew this because her second oldest daughter, Lexi, has Down syndrome. Over the years, Lesley and her husband, Dave, have made a point to learn about all the local resources available to help Lexi, but have not been able to find one ideal place that addresses all their needs. Lesley says, “Down syndrome children have so much potential and we need to continue to give them opportunities so they can grow and contribute to the community like any other person. There is nothing in the

Valley like this for Down syndrome children/adults specifically. There are groups and activities our kids can join but it is always mixed with other types of disabilities. This will really focus on Down syndrome and address their needs.” GiGi’s Playhouse, which was started by another mom on a quest to help her child, offers a wide array of programs and services for people of all ages who have Down syndrome as well as support systems for their family members. Everything from math tutoring to karate lessons and preschool prep to family nights can be found under one roof. There is even “Gigi University”, a progressive learning program for adults with Down syndrome so that they can gain necessary life skills and achieve personal success. The best part is all of these amazing services are free of charge!

Because Lesley, along with fellow Grayhawk resident, Audra Weinstein, owns several successful Orangetheory Fitness locations, she was wise enough to know that this would be a huge undertaking that would require lots of support from others who would be just as passionate about it. She turned

to her good friend, Jennifer Gage for help. Jennifer, who is active with many local charities and also has a daughter with Down syndrome, jumped right in. Together, these two ladies began to amass a local army of friends, family, neighbors and business associates in order to make their dream a reality. They now have a 12-member board that includes another Grayhawk mom, Val Schlesinger. Lesley and Dave’s eldest daughter, Lindsey, has become very involved as well, offering any sort of help that is needed. Planning is underway to open a Phoenix location of GiGi’s Playhouse by October 2014 (October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month).

All of this requires money in addition to dedication, of course. An impressive amount has already been raised. In fact, Valley Toyota Dealers recently donated $10,000. A Launch Party will be held on April 25 at Windgate Ranch in order to gain even more support. Many local businesses have generously donated items that will be auctioned off at the event. Grayhawk has particularly supportive. Heidi Boutique was the very first to donate and several residents have offered to help with the event in a variety of ways. it’s hard to believe it, but another school year is soon coming to an end. This is the time of year when parents, students and teachers reflect on

the accomplishments of the past year and start looking toward the challenges ahead. As usual, there were all sorts of great things going on at Grayhawk Elementary School this year. It seemed like one month was more exciting than the last. Students and parents enjoyed signature events such as Walk To School Day, Heroes’ Day, Fall Festival, Hour of Code, Lynx Laps, Core Knowledge productions and Bingo Night. A major highlight of the year was the students turning Principal Pratt and Assistant Principal Sherwood into HUMAN ICE CREAM SUNDAES as a reward for meeting (and exceeding) the Lynx Laps fundraising goal!

The month of April will start off with another very popular event: Spring Fling. This family-friendly evening that includes bounce houses, games, music and dancing was created several years ago as a was for the PTO to say “thank you” for all the support they are given throughout the year. However, this time it is also going to serve as a celebration of the school being named a “Higher Performing School” by the NCEA (National Center for Educational Achievement). Only two other elementary schools in the state received this award. This is the third year in a row that Grayhawk has achieved this status, which makes it even more special. Because Grayhawk is a school that always strives to be better and better, changes are made from year to year to enhance the overall quality of the learning experience. While last year, significant improvements were made to the exterior of the school (including a new kindergarten playground and a digital sign that displays important information to those who pass by), the emphasis this year was mostly on the interior. The hallways, lobby and teachers’ lounge were spruced up with fresh paint, new furnishings and decorative touches. Practical changes such as additional security features were also made.

While we could consider ourselves very lucky to live in a community that boasts such a stellar elementary school, luck doesn’t have too much to do with it. It’s not easy to maintain this level of quality education year after year, especially these days when budget cuts are constantly looming. The Grayhawk PTO is the key component to what makes our school so special. Every parent and every teacher is automatically a member of this organization and they all do their part to make Grayhawk what it is. The majority of the programs, events and projects that take place each year are funded and planned by the PTO. Whether it’s providing materials for special classroom projects, funding field trips, replenishing library books or installing adjustable basketball hoops, the PTO has a hand in it all. It’s amazing what a one group of dedicated people can accomplish.

Whether you’re new to Grayhawk or just looking for a way to be more involved, a great place to start is the PTO. Remember, if you have a student at the school, you’re already a member! Even if you don’t have a child at the school, you can lend support by donating to or attending the annual PTO Auction. This year’s auction will take place at Tavern Americana on April 12. The evening will include food, dancing, raffles, a live auction and lots of fun surprises. Funds raised this year are being earmarked for a new school playground.
