BRAND STORY

Brand Story

The First Nations Health Authority is an historic first for Canada: the first and only provincial, health authority operated by First Nations, for First Nations.

Our organization is culturally-grounded, responsive, accountable, visionary, transformative, and acts with integrity. We are working to transform the health and well-being of BC’s First Nations and Aboriginal people by dramatically changing healthcare for the better.

The past and future come together in our health and wellness model: we look to our past — the traditions of our ancestors — to enhance modern health practices and we look to our current and future health leaders for guidance.

This unique mix of past and present inspired the FNHA visual brand and is reflected in the combination of traditional and contemporary imagery and elements throughout our visual brand.

The thunderbird, traditional symbol of transformation and healing, forms the core of our visual identity — the logo. In the logo, the thunderbird is rendered in a contemporary style to reflect the dual role of traditional and contemporary practices in healing, The circle surrounding the thunderbird represents the impact of transformation: it suggests the ideas of wholeness and of a world transformed through an holistic approach to health and well-being. The thunderbird is shown looking up to signify an uplifting, positive spirit and a healthy future.

For Inquiries about our Brand Guidelines

This graphic standards guide was produced to help easily and quickly find the instructions needed to produce materials representing the First Nations Health Authority and the use of the First Nations Health Authority visual identity. If you have questions about usage of the logo, or its applications, please contact the Communications Department.

Acceptable Uses

In maintaining a successful brand one must choose the appropriate form of the logo for any given application. This section outlines the acceptable uses for the First Nations Health Authority brand. See the Colours section (page 3) of this document regarding supporting colours.

Full Colour

Whenever possible the logo should appear in its three-colour positive version on a white background.

Black/Greyscale

Both versions are reproduced using black ink only. The all black version should be used when the logo is to be reproduced in a smaller size and/or when only lower quality printing will be used. The version that creates a grey colour by screening back the black should only be used when the logo is to be reproduced in a larger size and/or when higher quality printing will be used.

Reverse

The reverse version should be used for situations where the logo appears on black, or one of the primary brand colours.

Clear Space

To ensure the greatest visual impact, the logos must always be framed surrounded by a minimum protected clear space. The clear space is equal to or greater than x, which is defined by the width of the orange and blue shape in the centre of the Thunderbird. x

Minimum Size

The following guidelines for the First Nations Health Authority logo establish a minimum size to protect its legibility.

20 mm print57 pixels web

The minimum sizes are measured based on the width of the entire logo including type and icon.

Do not change the logo by re-arranging the relationships between the symbol, name and tagline.

Do not affect the logo by changing its’ height to width ratio, or colours in any way.

Do not use full colour logo on coloured or solid backgrounds.

Unacceptable Uses

The First Nations Health Authority logo must not be altered in any way.

vintage and Modern

The First Nations Health Authority’s images offer rich visual insight into the First Nations peoples. Historic images are treated as duotones to create a vintage quality and contrast with full colour contemporary images. This photographic treatment creates a visual duality between the past and the present.

In cases where there is an opportunity to use a number photos, the weighting of images should be toward the full colour, contemporary style of image. In cases where only one photo can be used, for example banners, a contemporary image should be used and not a vintage image.

Throughout all the First Nations Health Authority Brand Applications there is an overiding theme of duality: past and present; culture and science; reflective and progressive.

This duality is reflected in the treatment of the imagery as well as text used for headings.

For example: Historic photos are reproduced as sepia treated duotones and are contrasted with full colour contemporary images. A similar style is created with headlines such as “Honouring Ceremony, gathering Wisdom.”

honoring Ceremony. Gathering Wisdom.A message from the First nations health Council

Welcome! We are pleased to provide you with this second edition of the transition Update. In the October edition, we provided you with information on the status of various sub-agreements, on the work to strengthen the FnhA’s corporate governance, and on our approach to transformation of programs and services.

Since then, Health Canada, the Province of BC, and the FNHC and FNHA have made a signifi cant decision – to adjust the planned date of transfer of FNIHB to the FNHA. This was reported to First Nations through a series of letters in November. In this edition, we will recap this key information. As has been requested by First Nations, this update includes the tripartite transition plan to achieve the transfer. It also includes, amongst other things a report on the work of the tripartite committees responsible for implementing the Framework Agreement, including a new committee on Non-Insured Health Benefi ts, and information on ongoing work to strengthen the First Nations health governance structure.

transfer Datelast year, we signed the British Columbia Tripartite Framework Agreement on First Nation Health governance (Framework Agreement). In the Framework Agreement, we gave ourselves the space to consider a phased approach to the transfer. This means that we can consider moving certain portions and responsibilities from Health Canada to the FNHA over an agreed-upon time period.

The Parties have agreed to plan for a phased transfer. This means that some functions will transfer on july 2, 2013. These are likely to include mainly Headquarters functions, management and administrative functions and policy and program leadership roles. Over the following months, we may agree to transfer other functions and activities as deemed appropriate. By October 1, 2013, the plan calls for full completion of the transfer, including all primary care, public health, environmental health and community health programs, along with community funding agreements and Health Canada regional staff .

This new plan for phasing the transfer better supports us to meet the success factors for the transfer that we have agreed to:

1. ensuring no disruption and minimal adjustment required by individual (cont’d. pg.5)

Pop-up Banners

Applications such as banners lean to a simpler, bolder visual approach. They are usually used as backdrops to be viewed from a distance. Minimal text should be positioned in the top two-thirds of the banner.
