Graphic Files and Formats

Within this presentation I am going to discuss the following

file formats, raster, vector, metafiles and file extensions. Also how they are applied and used in different in different

formats.

Raster graphics are digital images created or captured (for example, by scanning in a photo)

The raster file is sometimes referred to as a bitmap because it contains information that is directly mapped on a display grid.

Examples of raster image file types are: BMP, TIFF, GIF, and JPEG files. (sources used Wikipedia, Google) Software such as adobe, aperture and coral after shot all use raster files in their imaging

Raster Files

This is smiley face is an example of bitmap image.

This is an example of where I have used a raster file to create a imitation a mixmag front cover

Advantages – Manipulate imagesDisadvantages – Images get distorted

Vector graphics files store the lines, shapes and colours that make up an image as mathematical formulae.” They are also known as EPS files.

A vector graphics program (like Adobe Illustrator) uses these mathematical formulae to construct the screen image, building the best quality image possible. The mathematical formulae determine where the dots that make up the image should be placed for the best results when displaying the image.

Can be converted in raster formats Software such as Art board, Avery and CorelDraw, Illustrator use vectors.

Vector Files

This is where I have manipulated my image in Illustrator Advantages – It will still be clear if the image was to be expanded. Disadvantages – Errors can be visible if it is to big

A metafile is a file which contains more than one file extension. Contains vector, raster data files.

Metafiles

Here I have a combination of a vector and Rasta file.

Here is my logo which is a vector file which I created on Adobe Photoshop.

A filename extension is a suffix (separated from the base filename by a dot) to the name of a computer file applied to indicate the encoding (file format) of its contents or usage. Examples of filename extensions are .png, .jpeg, .exe, .dmg and .txt.

File extensions

This is an example of where I have saved my mixmag front cover as a file extension, in a PSD format

All software has a file extensions so they can be saved as different formats as different computers have different softwares

The major difference between raster and vector files is that when a raster file is zoomed in it becomes much more distorted and pixelated making it more blurry, however when a vector vile is enlarged it looks exactly the same and does not become distorted.

Vector and Raster

The difference between both the files is evident as the vector file is much more clear.
