From the President— Running a little late again. Where does the time go? I had a nice thing happen in time for me decorating for Christmas. A cousin of mine (yes I know I have thousands of them) Troy Johnson when talking to him earlier I mentioned that I would like to have a Confederate Christmas tree this year. I didn’t think anything about it until his wife sent me an email and wanted the names of all of my soldiers that I had proven through my research for the United Daughters of the Confederacy. This cousin made me 36 tree ornaments with the names on each one. Needless to say my tree was beautiful so much so it is still up. I am in awe every time that I go in and out of the room. He is a very talented person having started Eagles Laser Company in Greensboro. He sold it several years ago, but still works as Operations Manager there. I am so appreciative of all of my relatives who have fought for this country so I can have the freedom that I have today especially the one that served in the War Between the States.

VERY IMPORTANT We are looking for old Oxford Public Ledgers from 1944 through 1966 for the North Carolina Room. The publications of this paper for this period of time were destroyed before thoroughly checking to see if the library had microfilm to back them up. This period of time was very important to the county. If you have even one copy of the paper during this time please let our library make a copy of it, especially if you do not want to give your copy away. Please help us out here.

During our December meeting we elected officers for the year. I was re-elected president. No one volunteered for vice president so we decided to go withh a committee to come up with programs for the monthly meetings. Martha Morton, Mark Pace and Sallyann Hobson are the ones serving on this committee. Allen Dew was re-elected as treasurer. No one volunteered as secretary. Allen Dew was reappointed webmaster. Bonnie Breedlove was reappointed Cemetery chairman with Jessie McLam and Joey Dickerson on this committee. I will remain editor until someone volunteers for the job.

Membership Application NOTE ---- Membership fees are increased beginning January 1, 2015. If you want the quarterly journal mailed to you, the fee is an extra $5.00 to cover the increase in mailing costs. You may pay your membership dues online by credit/debit card or your Paypal account. You do not need a Paypal account to use your credit/debit card. Membership fees are as follows: Individual $20.00 (digital journal by email) Individual $25.00 (mailed journal by USPS) Family $25.00 (two people at same address) Institutional $20.00 (library, society, etc.)

North Carolina room is still very busy. Mark Pace the NC Room Specialist is doing a super job trying to help everyone that comes in to do research. It is amazing just to watch him with these visitors and hear what he has to say and all of the information that he provides them. He is a walking history book. We have had visitors from all over the United States to visit our library to do research. We get a lot of compliments about all of the material that we have accumulated in the North Carolina Room. Mark Pace told me the gifts of books have really increased. Be sure to read our Acquisition lists in this Journal and our wish list. If you are publishing your family history please remember to include our North Carolina Room on your distribution list. What you have researched will help others with their research. Time to get this to the printer so I will close this one until next time. Happy researching,

Mildred

Delayed Birth Certificates on file at the Register of Deeds Office in the Court House in Oxford, NC

Editors Note: The delayed birth certificates were completed after 1913 when the law was added that everyone would have a birth certificate. These can be found for Granville County at the Register of Deeds Office in the Courthouse and at Vital Records Branch in Raleigh. To get a delayed birth certificate you had to show proof of either a Bible Record, school record, affidavit from a family member or other proof in order to get one. An example; my mother did not get one due to no parent living, no Bible Record, no date of birth on school record. The only proof was her word that she was born on March 7, 1896.

The Fuller Story continued By Donald Brown

Millers Pioneer to Kentucky

About the early 1830’s, Jacob and Zilla Miller with their family now pioneered west to Calloway County, Kentucky, in southwest Kentucky, the county having been created in 1821 from Hickman County. The family settled near the Clark River in the vicinity of Murray, the county seat. Jacob and Zilla died in Calloway County sometime during the 1850’s. Jesse and Frances (Miller) Thorn joined the Millers in Calloway County about 1836. In 1844 the Thorns ventured still farther west, crossing the Mississippi River into Northeast Arkansas, first settling in Poinsett County and then in Craighead County, where Jesse became the first school teacher. They had a daughter and a granddaughter named Zilla and a son named Alsey. All five of the known children of Zilla and Jacob named their daughter for their mother, which says very much for Zilla Fuller Miller. Jones Fuller’s grandson and also the double cousin of Frances Miller Thorn – Isham Fuller by name, who was born about 1803, the son of Archibald and Martha (Miller) Fuller, also crossed the Mississippi River into Northeast Arkansas, arriving about 1856. When Craighead County was created from Poinsett County in 1859, with Jonesboro the county seat, Isham Fuller became the first judge. Another Fuller, William Fuller, became a county judge from 1816 to 1823. He was the son of Henry and Jane Fuller, with any exact kinship unknown. The Fuller-Miller western migration had begun before the treks to Arkansas. In 1836, the year that Texas became a Republic, Alsey Silvanus Miller, at age 16, left Calloway County, Kentucky, and ventured alone to Texas. After a time he settled in Gonzales County, where he died in 1885. His sister and brother-in-law Martha and William Wade also settled in Gonzales County. I am a Fuller descendant eight generations from Ezekiel Fuller of isle of Wight County, Virginia, via Fuller-Miller-Thorn-Brown. I was born in Craighead County, Arkansas, in 1931, 220 years after the first known record of Ezekiel Fuller in Isle of Wight County. Fuller descendants from Ezekiel are more than can be counted. One of these descendants was my brother Charles Elbert Brown (1921-2007), who was stationed at Camp Butner in Granville County undergoing basic training in World War II. He had no idea, nor did his family, that we had ancestors from Camp Butner’s county, or any place in North Carolina – or that we even had Fuller ancestors. It was a bit ironic that my brother was on ancestral territory without knowing it. However, when on April 19, 1968, I made my only visit to Granville County, I knew of our Fuller ancestors and their geographical areas. I had been in Raleigh doing genealogical research at the state library and archives and was returning home in Toledo, Ohio, via Granville County. I stopped my car to take a picture of a beautiful white dogwood tree in bloom. In Oxford I parked my car and walked about and then continued my homeward journey. I did not know of the exact Camp Butner site until while doing research for this article, Mark Pace, North Carolina Room Specialist at the Thornton Library in Oxford, told me on the telephone. Fuller is an occupational surname from England for a person who cleaned and thickened cloth. SOURCES Isle of Wight County, Virginia Will and Deed Book (Vol. II).
