Dear Parents:

This year, the Carson City School District has changed its procedures for identification of students for the Gifted and Academically Talented Education program, which begins in the third grade. Screening for inclusion in the GATE program for the 2014-15 school year will begin in February of 2014.

1. All second grade students will be screened for possible eligibility.2. Parents of students in grade 3 and above can nominate their child to be screened for inclusion

in the GATE program.3. The screening will include: a Student Nomination Form Checklist, state test scores when

available, MAP scores, enrollment at a Title I school, free or reduced lunch eligibility, English language learner designation, Special Education or Section 504 identification, enrollment in another district’s GATE program, and IQ testing.

a. A Parent Authorization for Eligibility Testing Form and the Student Nomination Form Checklist can be obtained from your child’s school if you would like your child to participate in this screening process.

b. Once the screening process has been completed, you will receive written notification of your child’s eligibility for participation in the GATE program.

4. Your child’s teachers, or any other adult, can also nominate your child to be screened for the GATE program. However, your permission for IQ testing is still required.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact me at 283-1523 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Valerie N. Dockery
