Abstract

The training will be targeted towards Kindergarten through first grade teachers in Chatham

County Schools. One teacher from each school will attend the training.  By the end of this

training, teachers will be able to differentiate groups with iPads, have a list of apps they can use

in their classroom, and have a strategy for using iPads for at least 20 minutes of the instructional

day. The activities will include: setting up iPads, learning how to differentiate groups with iPads,

using compass learning and Doceri with iPads, coming up with a top 5 list of educational apps

for the iPad, learning how to use iPads in the instructional day. By the end of this training,

teachers should have a solid understanding of how to use iPads in instruction effectively  and be

able to redeliver this information to their colleagues.

Proposal

Demonstrated Need

Teachers in Chatham County have access to 5 iPads per Kindergarten and First Grade Classes.

Teachers are unfamiliar with how to effectively use these iPads to maximize instruction. The

district has also purchased Learning Oddysee for every grade level that must be utilized 60

minutes per student a week. The need for training is necessary so these devices can be used to

their maximum capacity to improve student learning. Refer to Apendix A & B

Objective 1: Teachers will become familiar with ways to implement iPads in the classroom

There are 34 Elementary Schools in Chatham County. One teacher from Kindergarten and one

from First Grade from each school will attend the day long training. It will take place on a Staff

Planning Day, so there will not be a need for substitutes. The teachers that attend the training

will be expected to return to their schools to re-deliver training to their individual teams.  The 68

teachers will be broken into four groups, resulting in 17 teachers per training. Teachers will first

learn, and become proficient in setting up iPads to use for instruction. They will then be taught

how to use the iPads for differentiated instruction. Compass Learning (Learning Odyssey) will

be set up on each iPad and the teachers will learn how to access the application on the iPads. The

teachers will then be introduced to Doceri, an app that allows the iPad to control a computer to

use for to project on the Promethean Board. Doceri can also be used to record lessons for

students that may have missed the instruction. The teachers will then be introduced to five apps

that will enhance their use of iPads for instruction. Teachers will then be given the opportunity to

explore the iPads and new apps that have been introduced to them. They will also be given time

to ask questions, explore the Apple App Store to other educational apps to use in their

classrooms.

Evaluation Plan

To evaluate the effectiveness of the training, the attendees will be given an immediate survey at

the end of the Professional Development session, this will allow us to measure the teachers

Page 6: Grant Proposal - Final (1)

reactions to the presentation. A follow up e-mail will be sent out to attendees to survey them on

how often they are using their iPads in the classrooms and how they are using them. This will

help us measure the Transfer level of Kirkpatrick’s Levels of Evaluation. (Appendix C and D)

Budget

Budget Item Explanation Amount

Apple Store Gift Card

Teachers will need an app store gift card in order to purchase the apps for the training and additional apps for use in the classroom.

$20 (per teacher) = $1,360

Stipend for leaders

Teachers that will be leading the training will receive a stipend of $100.

$100 per teacher= $400

This training does not require any iPad purchases because all teachers already have 5 iPads for

classroom use. The teachers will need an Apple Store gift card in order to purchase the necessary

apps for the training. This allows them to purchase the apps that are included in the training and

also gives them some extra to purchase any apps that they would like to. Due to the ability to

share apps, the teachers can share the apps with their colleagues so only one $20 gift card would

be needed for an entire grade level. A stipend is also being paid to the teachers that are leading

the sessions. There will be four sessions and each teacher will receive $100.
