Elections Cheerleader

All cheerleader candidates will try-out on the same day.

Candidates will try out in groups of two or three depending on the number of candidates.

All candidates will wear the same uniform.

Group members and line-up positions will be determined by a drawing.

The selection of cheerleaders is done by two to three knowledgeable, impartial judges who will evaluate thecandidates. The judge’s evaluations will be based on a series of activities including: enthusiasm, appearance, cheer technique, jumps/tumbling, spirit, voice projection, execution of motions, dance techniques and interview question. The results of the impartial judging determines which cheerleader candidates are selected. The judges will break any ties that may occur. Upon request, parents may review their own child's ratings in conference with an administrator and/or cheerleader coach(es).

Mascot

Your skit needs to be 1-2 minutes in length

The most important thing is to be creative and keep it as simple as possible

Music is very important. It should tell the story.

No other people are allowed in the skit.

You need props to help tell your story.

You do not need a costume for the purpose of tryouts.The selection of mascot will take place after cheerleader tryouts are finished. The selection is done by two tothree judges who will evaluate the candidates for mascot. The judge’s evaluation will be based on a series ofactivities including: theme, pantomime, energy, character, props, creativity/appeal and interview. The results of the impartial judging determine which candidate is selected as mascot.

Candidates will perform one group chant, one group cheer, one group dance and three jumps as set up bythe coach.

Tryouts will take place in a closed gym with no spectators other than the judges, coaches and Principals.

Each member of the squad is responsible for motivation of the entire squad all year.

Everyone must have self-motivation and self-discipline throughout the entire year.

There must be successful communication between the sponsor and the squad in order to have harmonyand success as cheerleaders/mascot.

Cheerleaders/mascot are carefully selected and are an elite group of students; therefore, they shouldtake pride in their attitudes, actions, dress, and citizenship.

Work and out-of-school activities cannot interfere with practices or games. They are not anexcused absence or an excuse to leave practice early or to be late.

Cheerleaders/mascot will show respect during the National Anthem, both school songs and a time outfor an injured player.

There will be no practices held unless approved by the coach(es). There will be no stunting unless in the presence of the coach(es).

Participation in Extracurricular Activities Student participation in extracurricular activities is encouraged. Granger ISD makes extracurricular activitiesavailable as an extension of the regular school program, with this important difference: participation in the regular curriculum is a right afforded to each student, while participation in the extracurricular program is a privilege that carries additional expectations for acceptable conduct. Students engaging in extracurricular activities represent not only themselves, but also other students and the school district when performing, competing, or participating in extracurricular activities and while wearing uniforms or other clothing that identifies the student to the community or public in any setting as Granger ISD students. For this reason, theirbehavior must be exemplary and reflect the finest attributes of the total Granger ISD student body at all timesand places.

Important goals of the extracurricular program are to give students direction in developing self-discipline, responsibility, pride, loyalty, leadership, teamwork, respect for authority, and healthy living habits.

Because participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege and not a right, Granger ISD is authorized to set higher standards for participants of extracurricular activities than it would for those students who choose not to participate in these activities. Therefore, this Cheerleader/Mascot Code of Conduct extends beyond the Granger ISD Student Handbook & Athletic Hanbook not only in types of behavior prohibited, but also in correspondingconsequences and jurisdiction for imposing discipline. The Cheerleader/Mascot Code of Conduct will be enforced with all cheerleaders/mascot grades 8th-12th participating in cheerleading/mascot activities:

Regardless of whether school is in session;

Regardless of whether the offense occurs on or off school property or at a school-related event;

Regardless of whether the student is directly involved with the extracurricular activity at the time theprohibited conduct occurs;

Regardless of whether the extracurricular activity is in-season; and

Regardless of where or when the conduct occurs.

It is possible that a student who violates the Granger ISD Student Handbook & Athletic Handbook will incurconsequences from both the appropriate school administrator and from the coach or sponsor for the same particular violation. It is also possible that a student participating in extracurricular activities could violate the Cheerleader/Mascot Code of Conduct and be subject to discipline by the sponsor without having violated the Granger ISD Student Handbook & Athletic Handbook.

All cheerleaders/mascot will be expected to use different parts of the summer to practice, prepare spiritmaterials, and make plans for the coming school year. The coach(es) will arrange this time.

Cheerleaders/mascot who are assigned to detention, in-school or out-of school suspension will be givenpoints towards a demerit.

The rule of majority will be applied when making decisions that are left up to the squad. In case ofconflict, the coach(es)’s decision will be final.

7

Conduct Expectations The following conduct is expected of all participants. Failure to meet these expectations can result in disciplinary action by the coach(es):

Student commitment to a team or organization is expected for the entire season or activity. Studentsare encouraged to participate in more than one extracurricular activity; however students may not quitone sport or organization in order to participate in another while the sport or organization that thestudent quits is still active.

Students who participate in extracurricular activities that involve competition among schools and schooldistricts will conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner at all times. This includes behavior towardvisiting teams or hosting teams as well as the opponent’s fans.

Students should arrive to practices, meetings, and events on time and prepared.

Students who cannot be present for a practice, meeting, or event should call or email the coach(es)as soon as they are aware that they will be absent.

Injured or ill students who are unable to participate, but are able to attend a practice, meeting or eventare required to dress appropriately and sit in the stands to support your squad.

Students are required to show respect at all times to the coach(es) and other squad members. Students should refrain from wearing hair styles or hair colors that draw attention to themselves.

Students should follow the rules stated in the Granger ISD Student Handbook & Athletic Handbook.Failure to do so may result in additional disciplinary measures related to the student’s participationin the cheerleading/mascot activities as determined by the coach(es).

Granger High School Mascot JUDGE’S EVALUATIONContestant # _____

Category Points

THEME - 25 pts. The skit must have an overall theme. The theme may be expressed through the use of music, props, costumes, signs, and actions. The skit should tell a story by including a beginning to grab the audience’s attention, a middle where the action happens, and an ending to bring the skit to a dramatic close.(The skit time limit is 2 minutes. Music is not required, but encouraged. A dance is not a skit, however dancing may be incorporated in the theme.)

PANTOMIME - 20 pts. As a mascot you may not use your human voice to speak. Your “voice” is expressed through your actions, or pantomime. A story may be expressed through a mascot’s movements and actions. All movements and pantomime must be “Larger than Life”. (If human actors are incorporated, they should not be the main action in the skit. They are only participating to enhance the theme.)

ENERGY - 30 pts. The energy level of a mascot can reflect the energy and enthusiasm of the crowd. A mascot should always be very energetic and never perform at a slow pace. A mascot should never look tired, unless it is part of the character. Mascots are seen as “bursts of energy.”

CHARACTER - 30 pts. A mascot should always display a type of characteristic/emotion that the crowd becomes familiar with. This makes the mascot a “friend” to the crowd. Possible characters (emotions) that can be expressed are as follows, but not limited to: HAPPY, SAD, COOL, SHY SCARED, EMBARASSED, SNEAKY, IMPATIENT, MACHO, TIMID (Expressing different characters and emotions increases this score.)

PROPS - 20 pts. Props are essential tools that help a mascot express ideas and grab the audience’s attention. Props should be larger than normal so that the audience can see them from a distance. Signs may also be used as props. Signs must have large, bold letters so that the audience may read them from a distance and not too complicated or fancy. Props may be backdrops or other people, as long the other people do not take away from the mascot’s actions. (A minimum of 3 props is required. A maximum of three humans may be incorporated into the skit, but do not count as the 3 required props. Props cannot damage the court surface or become too messy.)

CREATIVITY/APPEAL - 30 pts. Mascot skits should be creative and appeal to the audience. Ideas should be entertaining and not lack in the “wow” factor. Mascot skits should always keep their audience on the edge of their seat waiting to see what will happen next. (Skits must be “family-friendly” and cannot include any inappropriate music, costumes, props, or actions.)

Cheerleading Financial Responsibility, 2019-2020

_______

_______

I recognize that as the parent of _____________________________________ I will be held responsible for the purchase of my child's uniforms, summer camp fees, camp clothes, accessories, and all personal equipment bought to represent Granger ISD as a cheerleader.

These items are the child's and they will be responsible for their upkeep. I am aware that these uniforms become the personal property of the cheerleader, therefore fund-raising for uniforms and personal equipment is not allowed. I am also aware that the cost of uniforms and all personal equipment can cost up to $1,500.00

All uniforms will be paid off by Augusr 1, 2019. A cheerleader may not cheer until all their debt has been paid.

By signing this form, I do realize the financial responsibility and I am aware of the consequences for not having paid for the uniforms and equipment by August 1, 2019.

I am aware that once my child has been selected for cheerleader, that summer camp is mandatory and that summer camp costs $392. Camp fees must be paid by May 13, 2019. Camp will be held at Texas A&M University in College Station from June 24-27.
