GRAND OF THE PACIFIC AREAS MILITARY ORDER OF THE COOTIE

GRAND HISTORIAN

Grand Commander Keeley,

The Grand of the Pacific Areas History has been completed through the year 2007. The information concerning the Provisional Grand ofJapan, the Grand of Japan, the Grand ofOKl-TAI, and the early days of the Grand ofthe Pacific are as complete as I can get them with the information that I possess. I would like to thank Past Grand Commander and Grand Historian Jim Malott and Past Grand Commander B.K.Hubbard for their encouragement and exceptional assistance in providing much of the information included in the History. The early days of the Grand should continue to be researched and the blanks and gaps filled in. The current Grand History located on the Grand Webpage has been updated and expanded. It currently consists offour sections including a Foreword, an Introduction, giving a brief history ofthe Military Order of the Cootie; the History covering the years 1963 through 2007, and an addendum containing such items as a list of defunct and merged Pup Tent, the minutes from the First Grand ofJapan Scratch, our first By-Laws, and various other topics of interest. Also in the works is another section with photographs depicting activities in the early days up through the present.

The status of the History ofthe Grand is in much better shape than many of our Pup Tents. Pup Tents 1, 11, and 15 are very good but need to update the last two or three years. Pup Tents 7 and 8 have started a History but need to catch up the past four to seven years. Pup Tents 2, 6, 10, 12, and 303 have made no progress in developing or posting a Pup Tent History on the Grand Webpage.

I would like to say at this time that it has been a real pleasure working on the History of the Grand. As a college history major, I was pretty much in my element digging through old files, documents, newsletters, pictures, and other material in putting together the History of the Grand ofthe Pacific. Hopefully my successors will continue in this project and create a History worthy of our rich heritage and current hard work.

FINAL HOSPITAL REPORT 2007-08

TO: Grand Scratch, 2008

I want to thank the Grand Commander for the opportunity to serve as the Grand Hospital Chairman for the 2007-08 term and I want to thank all of the PT Chairpersons who have helped to give us another successful year.

All of the Hospital statistics and awards are based on the PT reports received through May 2008. Although we did not beat last year's record in percentage we nevertheless had a very successful year. First I will give you the Pup Tent standings as of May 31:

RANKINGPT# $ CREDITS PERCENT OF OUOTA 1 12 $39,675.20 482% 2 7 $42,969.94 310 % 3 303 $29,339.19 290% 4 11 $19,288.90 228% 5 6 $11,305.74 120% 6 2 $7,349.65 112% 7 1 $56,214.55 110% 8 8 $14,049.26 107% 9 15 $8,988.90 81% 10 10 $6,897.03 58%

Grand Total: $236,078.36 143%

The input we received all year long from PT #10 was most disappointing. Their final percentage was only 58%. The last hospital visit reported by PT #10 was mid February.

The following additional Statistics should be noted: Total reports submitted: 128 Number Cooties participating 2,398 Number hours 7,840 Number Miles 81,889 Number patients 6,241

Page 10: GRAND PUP TENT OF PACIFIC AREAS - vfwdeptpacific.org Admin/grandmin08.pdf · GRAND PUP TENT OF PACIFIC AREAS ... $7,187.57 : $2,993.13 $ 7,591.21 : ... Nbr. Amt. Outstanding Deposits

I would like to give special recognition to PT #10 and their Hospital Chairman, Cootie Kevin Mitchell. With the largest membership of 217 their quota of $50,995.00 was the highest in Grand. The quota represents 31% of the total Grand quota. They had credits through May of $56,214.55. This is 22% of total Grand credits. This is significant in that while PT #1 has the highest membership in Grand the active participating Cooties in their area is probably no greater than and in may cases less than some of the other Pup Tents. Congratulations to PT #1.

Pup Tents achieving 100% and better are recognized by Supreme Certificates so most of the Grand Certificates previously given by Grand for the same reasons have not been given this term. Grand awards this term are:

1. Grand Certificates to PT Chairmen reaching or exceeding 300%. Certificates will now be given to Jim Luther ofPT #12 and Tom Darkus ofPT #7.

2. Plaque to PT with highest percentage over 300% (this will he awarded at the grand Banquet).

3. Plaque to PT with 300% or better (this will be awarded at Grand Banquet) 4. Plaque to outstanding Pup Tent Hospital Chairman (this will be awarded at Grand

Banquet) 5. Plaque to outstanding Pup Tent Hospital Worker (this will be awarded at Grand

banquet) 6. Individual Hospital Worker awards: A Grand Hospital worker pin is awardcd to

any Cooties participating in 10 or more visits during term and a Grand Hospital Worker patch is awarded to any Cootie participating in 25 or more visits during the term. These awards were mailed to Pup Tents of eligible Cooties in Decemher and Mayas follows: There were 39 pins and 22 pin and patcb sets. PT #1 10 Pins and 4 pins and patches PT #6 1 Pin and 1 pin and patch PT #7 5 pins and 2 pins and patches. PT #8 3 pins and 4 pins and patches PT #11 5 pins and 3 pins and patches PT #12 4 pins and 4 pins and patches PT #15 4 pins and 1 pin and patch PT #303 7 pins and 3 pins and patches

The Supreme Hospital Program runs from July through June. My final report to Supreme must be sent no later than June 25. I have therefore asked all current Hospital Chairpersons to submit a final report covering 26 May through 15 June by email to me no later than 23 June. Any visits made after June 15 can be included in next term's .July report.

I have been asked by the incoming Grand Commander to serve as your Hospital Chairman for the 2008-09 term. I am preparing a complete PT Chairman Instruction Booklet and a computer program for reporting visits and recording workers and the Supreme and Grand awards being offered... I need to wait until the adjusted 2008 membership figures are confirmed to establish each Pup Tent's quota. The reporting periods will once again be from the 26'h of the preceding month through the 25'h of the current month. The first report for the new term will be for the period 16 June through 25 July and should be emailed to me no later than the 28'h of July. Subsequent reports will be from the 26'h through the 25th

Thanks again for your support through this term and your hard work in putting our Grand well over 100%. This will contribute greatly toward our chances of achieving All Star once again. I will be looking forward to working with you in the 2008-09 term.

GRAND OF THE PACIFIC AREAS MILITARY ORDER OF THE COOTIE

HONEY BUCKET SPECIAL PUP TENT 1

CAMP ZAMA, JAPAN

Grand Commander Keeley:

Greetings once again Oh Repugnant One. Pup Tent 1 is alive, well, and bulging at the seams. The Pup Tent membership surpassed the quotas established by Grand and Supreme. As oBO May Pup Tent l's membership consists of21O Life Members, 9 continuous, and 6 new members for a total of224 members for 103%.

Our hospital visits have been most impressive this year. Prior to three of our Scratches a swarm ofPadiculi visited hospitals spreading cheer and goodies to patients and staffalike. At midterm we were at a dismal 28% in our Hospital Reporting, but with the hard work of our Hospital Chairman, Cootie Kevin Mitchell, and the determined effort of our Pup Tent Seam Squirrel we finished the end ofApril at 105.5% with still more to come.

Our obligation to the National Home has been met. With contributions from Paddy Daddy memberships, individual and Pup Tent donations that total $338.00 for 156%. The Pup Tent inspection has been completed and all the CCDB Pup Tent audits have been completed and forwarded to the Grand Quartermaster.

This concludes my report Oh Innocuous One. Once again Pup Tent 1, the Honey Bucket Special from the Land of the Rising Sun, has risen to the fore, and will continue to serve this Grand with only the best that we have to offer. It has been a pleasure leading this Pack ofPediculi this past year and look forward to accepting other positions of responsibility within the Grand.

Subject: Pup Tent #2 Grand Report

Ohl Most Mighty & Miserable One,

I am happy to report that Pup Tent #2, from the fertile hunting grounds of Anjung-Ri, Korea has been quite busy since

December of 2007. The following is a summary of thDse events:

~ First I would like to give my Most Humble apology for not being able tD be present at the Mid-Term Scratrch and

that my most miserable old CDOts that were present did not give a repDrt.

•:. On 13 January 2008 we held our first joint Scratch with those lonely old Coots from Chokem Chingos, PT # 8

and performed 1" Degree work for Michael J. Richards, Eric Zeigenmeyer and Damian Cone we got so

carried away with the fun we were having and performed 2"' Degree on the above and two more Harold

Brown and Scott Sadin. I am not sure which was more confusing, two Seam Squirrels hDlding a Scratch or

the effects of the Tequila shots my Hide Gimlet was making everyone drink. Fines were levied Dn CDotie

Lyons for being out of uniform at the Grand Scratch (Missing His Monkey) and Seam Squirrel Haney for not

passing on his report to the old Coots to give at the Grand Scratch. Duffle Collected that day was $142.00

and was split two ways. Fun Was Had By All Present.

.:. On 10 February 2008 we held our Scratch and held three more degree actions against Bobby Frace, Harold

Brown and Mike Richards. Seam Squirrel Haney opened up nominatiDns for the New Year. On 23 February

2008 Seam Squirrel Haney Dpened the "Golden Pig" that had been sitting at the bar collecting donations for

Pup Tent #6, 2007-2008, Grand Scratch Report June 17,2008

Listen Up Cooties,

Several District V VFW members have joined our lousy seams to become active in the Military Order of the Cootie and PT#6. New members we sorely need as our ranks are thinning from those answering the final role call and members wasting away as they did not fmd the desired sanctuary in our noble order. Our latest membership status indicate we have 41 members, 33 Life, 8 annual, PT#6 has not reached Supreme/Grand's membership goal of100% as ofthis date. We have however, located another Cootie in Chiang Mai and are pressing to get him into the seams.

The Hospital Chairman has submitted all reports and is up to date; the Pup Tent has exceeded one hundred twenty percent of our Goal through May. All Booster reports have been submitted to date. Donations to National Home Special Projects exceeded target, the QM bond has been renewed and a delegate registered for the Supreme Scratch in Orlando.

PT#6 cooties have been very active in visiting the sick and shut-ins to booster their spirits and let them know someone cares. We have been searching for a suitable activity to donate our time and funds, but did not qualify any this past year. We have however, committed to join in the Jesters Kids Fair which raises money to assist disadvantaged and orphaned kids in the Pattaya area this coming year.

Our PT#6 Cooties are located in all the posts in District V, holding leadership and Committee positions being the active and moving forces in VFW local community activities donating time and funds. We will continue our search for outstanding qualified post members to become cooties and increase our worthiness to the VFW and our noble Order.

We are looking forward to an active 2008-09 year as our Seam Squirrel elect is Past Grand Commander B.K. Hubbard, who has promised to raise the standards and increase the fines. PT#6 will hold their next Scratch August 22, 2008, at a suitable meeting room in Udon Thani prior to the District 5 quarterly meeting.

SUBJECT: PUP TENT #8 SEAM SQUIRREL REPORT FOR PERIOD Dec 07 - Jun 08

TO: GRAND COMMANDER

1. PUP TENT #8 has had one of our most successful Cootie years in our Pup Tent History.

a. We lead Grand with 116% of our membership for 2008, exceeding Grand by 106% and Supreme by 110%. We initiated eight new Cooties into the seams of our Pup Tent during the past year.

b. Hospital Reporting is outstanding and our recent activity was reported and put us over 100%.

c. All Booster Reports, Audits and other required reports were submitted on time.

d. We smashed all records for support to our National Home. Grand Rim of Fire states "Four Pup Tents are carrying the load for Grand. Of special note is Pup Tent 8 which leads the pack with a whopping 214% of our total goal."

2. The Cooties are the bulwark of ourVFW Post 10216. We have 16 Cooties as VFW Officers or Committee members in Post and District. All new incoming Post officers's for 2008-2009 are Cooties!

3. Cooties of Pup Tent #8 assisted VFW Post 10216 in all endeavors throughout the past six months. Most significantly were the very successful Armed Forces Day/Loyalty Day Parade, Tuskegee Airmen Dedication Ceremony and Dedication of a monument for the first Security Forces troop killed in the Korean War.

4. Cooties performed over 400 hours of volunteer work for the Post and community, working VFW Friday Night Meals for the Military Community, BBQ's for Adopt-A-Units and hosting fishing trips for active duty military members.

5. Cooties have assisted the post in 12 major membership drives. The Cooties are the mainstay in recruiting for the post signing up over 90% of this year's membership. Cootie efforts had a great part in the Post achieving All American and All State status!

6. Cootie activity in Korea has been re-energized through our joint activities and scratches with Pup Tent 2 from Camp Humphries.

7. Pup Tent #8 will continue to be a staunch supporter of the Veterans for Foreign Wars, the Department

Subject: Seam Squirrel- End of Year Report

To Grand Commander: Grand of Pacific Military Order of the Cooties

Commander Keeley,

1. Pinatubo Pup Tent 15 continues to strive in being a vital and supportive element of our parent organization VFW Post 2485. Our support is demonstrated by the high percentage of Cooties attending the post monthly meetings and other functions. I do regret, due to circumstances, we have not been able to achieve 100% in membership, as well as the Grand and Supreme quotas.

J!: Membership: As of this Grand Scratch, Pup Tent 15 has 32 Life and 12 Annuals for a total of 44 Cooties. For record purposes we have 34 life members but unfortunately two of our staunch members passed away this year. Cootie Ed Lyons and Cootie Earl Dodge. These figures represent 97.9% of last year's membership, For the Grand quota we 91 % and the high quota from Supreme of plus 5, we are 88.9% As you see we ended up 1 Cootie short of meeting our goal of 100%. We did the best we could, but fell short due to various conflicts with the Post and Pup Tent. Conflicts that we are slowly resolving and we hope for a better year to come.

b. VFW Booster Program: Pup Tent 15 continues to be the prime source Of inputs to the program, regardless of our numbers. We had 976 cooties

involved in 1262 events giving 5645 man-hours and driving a total of 9907 miles.

Page 22: GRAND PUP TENT OF PACIFIC AREAS - vfwdeptpacific.org Admin/grandmin08.pdf · GRAND PUP TENT OF PACIFIC AREAS ... $7,187.57 : $2,993.13 $ 7,591.21 : ... Nbr. Amt. Outstanding Deposits

c. National Home - Special Projects Funds: Our Pup Tent actively recruits support for the National Home. Our most satisfying special projects is the quarterly Street Children's Swim party, which is attended by an average of 30 children who enjoy a dip in the Officers Club swimming pool followed by a spaghetti dinner. Oh, there are always several cooties pulling guard duty for the bar area.

d. Hospital VISITS AND BLOOD PROGRAM: Pup Tent 15 had 212 Cooties travel 1,983 miles to visit 257 Patients expending a total Amount of $9,310.12. The hospitals in the Angeles City are spread out and difficult to determine if a veteran is in fact hospitalized. Cooties Ralph has been trying to evaluate the blood donor program in Angeles City to include how donated blood can be sent to where the veteran is hospitalized.

e. COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES - On 6 November the Seam Squirrel attended the Veterans Day

Ceremony at the Embassy residence in Baguio City. This ceremony was sponsored by Veterans Affairs and the American Ambassador.

- The day before Veterans Day, our Pup Tent hosted the M. O. C. Philippine Swarming at the VFW 2485 Scratching Area. In the afternoon we also hosted a very successful social at the Brass Knob Bar, which was open to all VFW members and Cooties. We appreciated the participation of numerous Cooties from Pup Tents 7 and 11.

- Then on 11 November Pup Tent 15 participated in the Veteran Day Ceremony at Clark Cemetery, with most of our Cooties staying around for the annual Post 2485 Veterans Day picnic at the post home.

- In December several of our Cooties assisted AWAM'S (American with a Mission {for Kids}) to distribute more than $30,000.00 in food to more than 3,000 families.

- We also had 9 Cooties attending the Mid Term and 5 attending the Grand Scratch.

2. During this year our Pup Tent was re-named MIGHTY PINATUBO PUP TENT 15. Our Hungry Cootie has submitted to the Grand Adjutant our Warrant and PT 15 G. O. 1, making Joe Carsley the Seam Squirrel for the ensuing year, I have regressed to Blanket Bum as our ranks are thinning, we

are entering the age of recycling but hope to stifle that this coming year. A number of our positions are in the to be announced category.

3. This past month our Provost Marshall Jackie Rollins left for the United States and probably will not be back at least not in the near future, he will be sorely missed as he has held many positions with in the Post and Pup Tent. We wish him and his wife Nellie a fond farewell.

4. Commander, it has been my extreme pleasure to serve the Grand this year and I thank you and all who made my year possible.

HONOR DEGREE OF THE VFW

To: Grand Commander 12 June 2008

,A ""...ojSUBJECT: Pup Tent 303 Mid Yew Report

Oh Most Mighty and Miserable One,

I am happy to report that Pup Tent 303, from the fertile hunting grounds of Daegu, Korea has been busy during these past few months since the Grand Council of Administration in December. Being the "Honor Degree ofthe VFW" we have supported our sponsoring Post, Post 10033 in all events to include attending monthly VFW meetings, District III quarterly meetings, Annual Post Home Christmas Dinner, Annual Post Children's Christmas Party, Annual New Year's Eve Party, New Year's Day Health Run, Annual Super Bowl Breakfast, Valentine's Day recognition for our lady patrons, Annual St. Pally's Day celebration, District III Annual Loyalty Day Parade, the District III Convention, Buddy Poppy Drive on Memorial Day Weekend, and provided funding for our Post Band that plays at the Post Home once a month.

Some of our major accomplishments are:

Life Membership: All but four (4) of our Cooties are life members. Provided $500 in support of the Clark Cemetery. Held a flag dedication ceremony and provided 65 US Flags to Daegu American School for their classrooms. Our Hospital Program is alive and well with 253 Cooties making numerous visits, spending $29,139.00 or 277.4% of our quota for this year. We held several raffles to support deserving events. Final recruiting tallies for the year show that Cooties from Pup Tent 303 have recruited a total of396 new and reinstatables ensuring the post exceeded 100%. We had two distinquished century recruiters and one other Cootie that exceeded 50 new and reinstatables.

This concludes my report.

From: District VII Councilman 17 June 2008 To: Grand of Pacific Commander Subj: Grand Scratch Report

Dh UniIIustrious and Infamous Big Bug,

1. The Pup Tents in District VII have continued scratching at their seams and have had a lousy year.

2. All new Shavetails have been installed for the coming year and eagerly awaiting to be turned loose. I am happy to report that all pup tents have been inspected and the Inspection Reports have been duIy receipted for by Supreme. I might add that these inspections were done without any assistance or guidance by the Grand. Neither the Grand Inspector or the Grand Commander deemed it necessary to assign any Deputy Inspectors for the Philippines. However, being enterprising and diligent Coots, we took it upon ourselves to do their jobs. At our April Swarming of Pup Tents, I usurped the authority of the Big Bug and assigned Deputy Inspectors. Bottom line: we got the job done. I would recommend to the Provost Marshall that both the Grand Inspector and the Big Bug be fined appropriately for shirking their duties this year.

3. All Pup Tents in the Philippines are steaming full speed ahead, with the wind in their whatever, and doing a lot of scratching.
