In my reminiscing which you will find to be old news, but bears repeating. TheDaughters of Penelope are leaders and not followers, we have been true to ourIdeals and Principles. We have not allowed ourselves to be pulled into every fadlike many other organizations. “Our objectives continue to mirror our beginningsand to promote Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy and Civic Responsibility”. Thespirit of volunteerism marked the early years of the Daughters of Penelopedevelopment and still continues to be our strongest quality.

District and Chapter Leaders as you enter the second half of your term you needto take a moment to give your teams a HIGH-FIVE for all their manyaccomplishments. I too want to thank the officers of the Grand Lodge for theiroutstanding individualism, team spirit, untiring travels throughout Districts and lovefor our Order. We have been truly blessed to have Elena, our Executive Director atHeadquarters working her magic for our members.

Through the challenges and triumphs over the year, I witness the Heart of theDaughters, shine brighter than ever. For that, I will be forever grateful and proud ofthe magnificent individuals of our order.

GROWTH & EXPANSION UPDATE BY GRAND VICE PRESIDENT DEMI THOMAS

Greetings Sisters and Happy New Year!

I am sure by now you have all cut your Vasilopitas and madeyour New Year’s resolutions. I know I have and I am lookingforward to fulfilling that resolution by bringing in even moremembers into the Daughters of Penelope.

Congratulations! You are all doing such an outstanding jobbringing in new members, reinstating old members and startingnew chapters. In the last 3 months we have added 3 newchapters!

I know many of our sisters snowbird in another state for thewinter. Why not attend a meeting in your winter city. It would be a great way tomake new friends and maybe get some new ideas to bring back to your homechapter. If you live in one of the snowbird states why not invite visiting sisters toattend your meetings. Maybe they can share some of their ideas with you.

Don’t forget to stop by and pick up a Sister and bring her to your meeting. Alsoremember to reach out to new members. Assign them a mentor. Do something funat your next meeting. This might be a great time to change the venue of yourmeeting. Maybe host a meeting in your home. A change of venue just might be thething for a winter pick me up. Please send me pictures of your membership eventsand I will share them on our Facebook page. We love to see what our sisters aredoing across the country.

Our video challenge,“Why I am a Daughter of Penelope,” will come to an endJanuary 31st. Please make sure to get your video in before the deadline. We havereceived some very creative videos and can’t wait to share them on our Daughter’sFacebook page. Remember, your video can be no longer than 3 min. Send it [email protected].

A MESSAGE FROM GRAND GOVERNOR ZONE II

STELLA SIRKS

A fresh new year is once again upon us. It is the time to be thankful for the blessings of the past year and to take stock ofall our achievements, of which you all had many. At the same time, New Year 2018 is a brand new year to start afresh, to startstrong, and yet another chance to do everything we want to do this year.

The amazing thing with chances is how we get them every year, what we do with them is up to us. So, set positive goals and

resolutions. Hang them where you can see them and be excited for what you canachieve this 2018, this applies in our personal lives as well as in our chapters. WEARE SISTER STRONG!

I am so proud to be apart of our Sisterhood. What I have read of and events that Ihave witnessed, our chapters are Doing is truly amazing. I was able to attend theSaint Basil Academy Christmas Open House and was greatly humbled by theexperience. God’s work is truly visable when you see the love on the faces of thesechildren. I encourage you to visit if you have the opportunity. The charities wesponsor both through our National obligations and our chosen chapter organizationsalso set us apart. The simplest definition of an organization is a “band of individuals who aremotivated to think of themselves as a group before they think of themselves asindividuals.” That would also be the definition of the Daughters ofPenelope. Developing that sense we call “being family” can be difficult, yet mostsatisfying. We are all most proud of the groups we belong to, rather than ourindividual accomplishments.

I challenge you all to make the best effort you can to continuing to help others,

SALUTE TO WOMEN MESSAGE FROM CO-CHAIRS/PGP ANNA-HELENE GROSSOMANIDES & JOANNE SALTAS

The Salute to Women was founded by two Past Grand Presidents, Ms. BettyAthanasakos and Ms. Joanna Panagopoulos Merakos. The idea originated in 1965to recognize that the Daughters of Penelope was emerging as a major National andInternational Woman's Philanthropic Organization.

Since the DOP had proven to be a dynamic force in their local communities andwas making a stir throughout the U.S., Canada, and Greece. Ms. Athanasakosrecommended the Daughters of Penelope recognize an outstanding woman outsideof the organization. Four years later, Grand President Merakos adopted the idea tohonor a woman who represented and possessed the goals and ideals of theDaughters of Penelope and the "SALUTE" became a reality.

For almost 50 years the Salute to Women has honored so many remarkable womenfor their different professions, accomplishments and contributions to society in thepast, present and future.

This year we are proud to announce that we will be honoring DISTRIBUTINGDIGNITY, as the 2018 Salute to Women Award recipient, this organizationexemplifies the vision of our founder, Alexandra Apostolides. It’s Co-Founders,Joanie Balderstone, and Rebecca McIntire, saw a need, and created a solution. TheDOP is proud to honor this invaluable cause.

Dignity is a nonnegotiable part of the Daughters of Penelope since it was founded in1929. Indicative of self-respect, DIGNITY is woven into the fabric of the Daughtersof Penelope.

The Salute to Women is an elite event. It will be held at the Supreme Convention,Thursday, July 26, 2:00-4:00 pm. Please participate in its continued success bymaking a donation. Click here to view the Salute to Women form.

The DOP will provide you the opportunity to give directly to DISTRIBUTINGDIGNITY with a collection party to be held at the event. New bras and/or unopenedpackages of feminine hygiene products is greatly appreciated for the collectionparty.

DISTRIBUTING DIGNITY is an ideal project to support in your local communityas an individual, chapter, and district. Visit the website to discover the many waysto assist: www.distributingdignity.org. You can also follow them via Facebook byclicking here.

Happy New Year Sisters!

During this Blessed Holiday Season it warms my heart when I hear of Sistersreaching out to our Military. This can be a very lonely time for our Deployed andtheir Families. Your support and well wishes are greatly appreciated. During thisChristmas Holiday, please, take the time to see if in your local Military Communityyou could reach out to these families. Send out a card, email or drop off a box ofthose wonderful cookies in the mail that we all make to perfection. I know my nieceand her family looked forward to these small gift wrapped gifts, every year. To aDeployed Service Women or Man opening this gift box, may be the only heart feltgift they may receive from Home.

Special thanks to Saturn Chapter No. 281 of Louisville, KY (District No. 11) forspearheading a project to support troops for the second year in a row. Thechapter's local Louisville, KY Army National Guard unit is being deployed inJanuary 2018. A committee headed by Saturn Chapter Sister Alice Collis, with $400in funds from the chapter's treasury, purchased specific items in bulk quantities forthese troops being deployed. The Chapter received assistance from a local Rite-AidPharmacy for these items. The chapter also sponsored a holiday card collection forthe same unit.
