Dear Friends,

During 2008, the Board of Trustees and staff of the Community Foundation engaged in a year-long strategic planning process using Verne Harnish’s Rockefeller Habits. One of the first steps was to identify our Core Values – those things that define who we are, the enduring beliefs that govern our organization. What emerged were a set of values that we suspect are not so different from those upon which the Community Foundation was founded 38 years ago:

Our Core Values: For Good. For All. For Ever.

• Weareourcommunity’sFoundation.Wearehereforall.• Weprovideleadershiptoinitiatepositivechangeinourcommunity.• Westrengthenandenrichourcommunitythroughhigh-impactgrants.• We build permanent endowment, provide responsible stewardship,

and create lasting legacies to benefit our community forever.

It was the Strategic Planning process that also led to the theme for this year’s Annual Report – “It’s all about people.” The process clearly illustrated to us that at the forefront of everything we do as a Foundation, are the people of this community – people who care enough to become donors or establish Funds, people who volunteer to serve this organization with their time and talents, and people who are the beneficiaries of the grants and scholarships that are provided. Everything we, as a Foundation, are able to accomplish, is by and for the people of this community.

Never before has there been a year when it was more evident that people are the center of the Foundation. As the effects of the nation’s worst economic downturn in decades rippled through our community, our Board of Trustees determined that the Community Foundation needed to be on the front line in caring for our neighbors. When many Foundations were cutting back in their grant making to counter the decline in investments, our Board chose instead to capture $160,000 from Greatest Needs Funds and targeted all of these dollars to support the safety net agencies that deliver services to Families in Crisis. Over $100,000 in grants have been awarded to date through the Families in Crisis Initiative to organizations that meet the basic needs of food, shelter, and emergency help for our neighbors and friends in the Tri-Cities community.

Also at the heart of the Foundation are the generous people of our community who support our work through their gifts. We are pleased to report that in 2008, over 2,200 gifts were received from individuals and families totaling just over $3.4 million. And grants of over $3.5 million were awarded from Funds of the Community Foundation, including over $200,000 in scholarships to 181 students pursuing their dream of a college education. We thank you all for making this possible. Just as it has throughout its 38-year history, the Community Foundation has focused on people – friends, neighbors, families, donors, and volunteers, – the generous, thoughtful, and caring people that help to make this your Community Foundation For Good. For All. For Ever.

Sincerely,

Melinda Brink, Chairperson Ann Tabor, President Lett

Making a gift to the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation can be as simple as writing a check or as sophisticated as designing an individual estate plan. The Foundation accepts charitable gifts of almost any kind, invests the money, and distributes a portion of the income to philanthropic organizations and programs matching donors’ interests and personal charitable giving goals.

How Do I Establish A Fund?It is very simple. Many Funds can be opened the same day you call and there are no special start-up costs or fees. Just give the Foundation’s Development office a call and we will talk about your options and help you pick the best Fund to meet your charitable goals.

The many ways of giving to the Community Foundation include:

Outright GiftsGifts of cash, securities, personal property or real estate are simple and convenient ways to make a charitable contribution and receive maximum tax advantages.

BequestsCash or property given through a will is usually fully deductible for federal estate and state inheritance tax purposes. The Community Foundation can also be named as the full or partial beneficiary of a donor’s estate or be named in a charitable remainder trust created by the will.

MemorialsGifts made in memory of loved ones are ideal ways to perpetually remember family members, friends, or colleagues.

TributesGifts made to honor someone for a birthday, graduation, anniversary or other special occasion are perfect for the person who has everything and cares about their community.

Life InsuranceBy naming the Foundation as the irrevocable owner and/or beneficiary of a life insurance policy, you can create a Fund for the benefit of others.

Individual Retirement Account (IRA)The Individual Retirement Accounts you have established for your retirement years can later be reduced by income and estate taxes before reaching designated heirs. By naming the Community Foundation as the plan’s beneficiary or partial beneficiary, you ensure that your IRA or 401K assets will fully benefit your community. If you are over 70-1/2 years of age, a special opportunity to give a direct distribution from your IRA exists. Call the Foundation office and ask about the Charitable IRA Rollover.

Ways to Give

Charitable Lead TrustsYou can name the Foundation as beneficiary of income from a trust for a specific number of years. Ultimately, the bulk of the trust goes to other named beneficiaries, such as children or grandchildren.

Charitable Remainder TrustsYou can provide lifetime income for yourself or other beneficiaries and leave the remainder of the estate to the Community Foundation Charitable Gift AnnuityWith a Charitable Gift Annuity, you can make a significant gift to the Foundation and, in return receive income for life - at varied interest rates, depending on your age.

Private Foundation TransferA private foundation can efficiently and cost-effectively transfer all or some assets to the Community Foundation, yet still retain its name and purpose. This transfer offers the private foundation tax advantages, flexibility, and administrative savings.

How Are Gifts Invested?Effective stewardship of philanthropic assets is key to the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation’s ability to fulfill its mission of building charitable Funds to strengthen the Tri-Cities Area communities. Our investment goal is to preserve and enhance the real value of these assets over time.

All gifts are pooled for diversified investment and economies of scale and to increase their charitable impact. Investment performance is reviewed quarterly by financial experts and monitored by the Investment Committee and the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

Thomas N. Cooper Designated FundDuring Tom’s 26 years of living in Grand Haven, he came to appreciate the hard work of many local nonprofit organizations. As a retired school psychologist for the Grand Rapids Public Schools, he also had a passion for helping others. A friend to the Foundation, Tom generously made arrangements for a planned gift to come to the Community Foundation at his death. When Tom passed away in October of 2008, we were honored to follow his wishes and create a Designated Fund that will support eight local nonprofits forever. The Foundation was lucky to know Tom and is honored to facilitate his legacy. We will never forget Tom’s smiling face and friendly personality!

Larry Poel FundBetween being the Grand Haven Area Public Schools Team Physician and having a busy Medical Practice, Dr. Larry Poel is a household name in the Tri-Cities! Larry was born and raised in Grand Haven and attended Western Michigan Christian High School. Larry continued his education by obtaining a degree in pharmacy and then ultimately receiving his Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Poel has cared for hundreds of patients during his 35 year career, and has received numerous awards for his volunteer work. The Foundation is happy to assist Dr. Poel with his charitable giving though his new Donor Advised Fund.

Ottawa County Parks Nature Education Center FundsThe Community Foundation was honored to open two new funds to benefit the Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Commission and their campaign to raise funds for a new Nature Education Center. The Capital Project Fund is being used to help raise money to build the new, state of the art facility, and the Endowment Fund will provide a permanent source of income to maintain the Nature Education Center in the future. There is still time to support this important community campaign.

Gail Ringelberg Special Needs Fund for North Ottawa County Council on AgingGail Ringelberg was the Executive Director of the North Ottawa County Council on Aging for eight years. When Gail retired from her post, the Board of Directors of the Council decided to open a Fund at the Foundation in her honor. Gail’s Fund will provide assistance to clients of the organization who find themselves with pressing, immediate needs that cannot be met through normal programming and support services. What a perfect way to honor Gail and provide for the clients of NOCCOA about whom she cared so deeply.

West Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association Horticultural Education FundThe Foundation welcomes this new Committee Advised Fund. The West Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association will use this Fund to award annual grants to youth programs offered by area school districts to promote awareness of the horticulture industry. Knowing how important the horticultural industry is to our region, the Foundation is honored to welcome this new Fund.

Larry and Anne McLaughlin FundLarry and Anne McLaughlin, and their daughter Elizabeth, moved to Spring Lake in 2007. Larry, a native of Grand Haven, spent his career in aerospace engineering in Southern California, and Anne is a CPA and former finance executive. Larry and Anne established this Fund as a way to support the community which gave Larry so much during his youth, and also to honor his parents, Lloyd and Marjorie McLaughlin. The McLaughlins have always stayed connected to our community by spending time at the family’s summer cottage in Stickney Ridge. We welcome the McLaughlin family back to the Tri-Cities as permanent residents and appreciate their involvement in our community!

Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church Endowment FundEndowment Funds are an important financial tool for Churches, and the Foundation is happy to welcome the Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church to our family of Funds. This Fund will grow over time with gifts, memorials and bequests from the congregation. The principal gifts to this Fund will be preserved forever and a percentage of the income and growth will become a sustainable source of income to support the programming and general operations of the church. Thank you to Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church for letting us help you endow your future.

Tri-Cities Strikers Soccer Club Endowment FundSoccer is a team sport that is incredibly popular in our community and across the world. The Tri-Cities Strikers Soccer Club is a competitive soccer club that has started an Endowed Fund here at the Foundation to support the club’s operations and financial assistance program. It takes everyone’s effort on a soccer team to win the game and this Fund will be successful with the same philosophy. A big incentive to supporting this Fund is that all gifts qualify for the Michigan Tax Credit – a great tax benefit. We’re glad to have Tri-Cities Strikers on the Foundation team.

Ottagan Addictions Recovery (OAR) Endowment FundThere are many different assets that can be donated to start funds at the Community Foundation. OAR’s Fund was started with a life insurance policy. Tom Boven, an OAR Board Member, gave the Foundation a paid-up life insurance policy. The Foundation sold the policy for its cash value and then created an Organization Endowment Fund for OAR. This is a beautiful gift that will become an important funding source for supporting OAR’s substance abuse programs. Thank you Tom for this innovative gift and we welcome OAR to the Community Foundation.

Grand Haven Boardwalk 25th Anniversary FundWe are pleased to be a partner in the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Boardwalk. This Community Service Fund was started to facilitate the many donations from our community for this important project. When the Boardwalk renovation and beautification is complete, the remaining balance will convert to an Endowed Fund to forever support maintenance expenses for the Boardwalk. Thank you to the hundreds of people who have generously supported this community effort!

Lakeshore Baptist Academy FundLakeshore Baptist Academy is a, local, private, Bible based educational institution for grades K-12. The Community Foundation is honored to hold their new Endowment Fund which will grow and support the school and its programs. Just like the Lakeshore Baptist Academy’s tag line says “Education for Eternity,” this Endowed Fund will also be helping students receive a Christian based education for eternity. Welcome Lakeshore Baptist Academy – we are glad you are here!

Pat Shafer Fund to Support Leadership West MichiganThis Fund was established to honor the outstanding work of Pat Shafer and her dedication to the Leadership West Michigan Program. Leadership West Michigan is a regional program facilitated by the Chambers of Holland, Grand Haven. Muskegon and Grand Rapids. Graduates of this program are better informed citizens, have increased knowledge of regional issues and demonstrate stronger leadership skills. This Fund will be used to support the Leadership West Michigan program with tuition assistance and curriculum enhancements. Thank you Pat for being the inspiration for this Fund and thank you Leadership West Michigan alums for your generous support!

Paul C. and Carol C. Bedient Family FundThe Bedient family has called Grand Haven home for twenty years after first visiting on a family vacation. They found the community a wonderful place to raise their four children and establish their careers. Paul’s lifelong passion for news led him to our hometown newspaper, the Grand Haven Tribune, where he serves as Publisher. Carol joined the staff at the Community Foundation ten years ago as Grants & Program Director. It is always extra special when Community Foundation staff care enough about the work they do to start their own Fund here at the Foundation. Thank you to the Bedient family for your continued dedication and generosity to our community!

Crockery Township Fire Department Endowment FundWe are pleased to welcome Crockery Township Fire Department to the Community Foundation. This Endowed Fund is able to accept public contributions and will grow over time with community support. The annual distribution from this Fund will support fire prevention education and public safety programs. We appreciate the partnership we have with Crockery Township and the foresight of the Fire Department’s Advisory Committee to plan for the Township’s future.

Hill Family Children’s Christian Education FundStarted by Joseph and Nancy Prinzi, with additional support from a bequest from Nancy’s father, Creighton Hill, this Fund will perpetually support Christian education for children and youth at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Grand Haven. This generous gift to memorialize Creighton, Ruth, Robert and Dorothy Hill will forever be preserved, and a portion of the earnings will always go to support St. John’s Episcopal Church. Thank you to the Prinzi family for their generosity and for allowing the Community Foundation to help them with this beautiful legacy.

Walden Green Montessori Endowment FundThe Community Foundation could not be more pleased to welcome another area School Foundation. Walden Green is a Charter School in our community for children in grades K-8. Walden Green is a dynamic community of active learners with children, parents, teachers and community members sharing in the learning process. The mission at Walden Green Montessori is to educate all children to their human potential. This Fund, as it grows, will be able to provide capital to help kids at Walden Green reach for the stars!

This fall when Lynn Hawley, Child Services Director for Grand Haven Area Public Schools makes visits to the homes of all of her entering preschool students, she will be bringing a very special gift. Provided by a grant from the Dr. Sylvia and Ron Ruscett Fund of the Community Foundation, each new student will receive their own Dr. Seuss book. Inside the front cover of the book is a nameplate with the child’s name.

“Reading is so important, and there is no better occasion than when a child first enters preschool for them to have their very own book to read and care for,” said Sylvia Ruscett. “We also wanted to find a way to let each child and their family, know that their community cares about them and is encouraging their success.”

The Garrison Family Fund Always Here to Take Care of our Community

“We hope the Garrison Greatest Needs Fund gives the Foundation the flexibility it needs to always be able to tackle the changing challenges our children and grandchildren will face,” Edgar and Gretchen Garrison

Dr. Edgar and Gretchen Garrison have lived in Spring Lake since 1956. During those years, they have done many important things….Edgar practiced dentistry for nearly 50 years, they raised four boys, and Edgar was one of the original visionaries who helped start the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation back in 1971!

Edgar and Gretchen have also started a very special Fund here at the Foundation. The Dr. Edgar and Gretchen Garrison Family Fund helps to support the Greatest Needs of our community. As Edgar and Gretchen said when they opened the Fund “One thing we have learned living in Spring Lake for 53 years, is that the needs in the community keep changing.” Edgar goes on to say “38 years ago when we gave our first gift to the Foundation, we could not have guessed that today the community would be worried about home foreclosures or excited that the Foundation would be able to help the community purchase two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and dunes for the citizens to enjoy.” Gretchen added, “This is a beautiful community and all of our children are here too. We hope our gift helps preserve it for all the families who will call Spring Lake home in the future.”

Creating this type of Fund is philanthropy in its most altruistic sense – being charitable today to address the needs of tomorrow and to help people you may never know. We thank Edgar for his foresight many years ago to create a Community Foundation for the Tri-Cities area, and we are grateful to the Garrison family for creating this Fund that will be doing good, forever!

If you would like more information about creating your own Greatest Needs Fund, please call the Foundation’s Development Office at 842-6378.

Imagine a place where you can experience the breath-taking colors of the fall foliage, spot fox tracks in the snow, catch a glimpse of a bald eagle soaring majestically overhead, or listen to the calming music of water flowing by. Nestled along the banks of the Pigeon River in Port Sheldon Township, the Ottawa County Parks & Recreation Commission’s new Nature Education Center will offer such experiences. With the help of grants from the Greatest Needs Fund, the Youth Fund, and the Marion A. and Ruth K. Sherwood Family Fund, the newly constructed center will offer high quality environmental education programs and activities to people of all ages. The 8,000 square foot center will provide year-round programming for schools and will also provide a base of operations for this important aspect of the county parks program.

Discretionary FundsMeeting changing community needs. When you establish or add to an existing Greatest Needs Fund, your gift addresses a broad range of critical needs, including future needs that often cannot be anticipated at the time your gift is made. A gift to create a Greatest Needs Fund is a thoughtful gift. You will be investing in our community in a way that allows your gift the most flexibility and impact in the future.

n Every Fund in the Foundation expresses its donor’s desire to invest in our community in a personally satisfying way. Some Funds are advised, meaning donors recommend grants from them when they choose and to causes they wish to support. Others are dedicated to specific purposes, such as scholarships or the arts, or individual agencies.

Every Fund – advised or designated, new or old, small or large, endowed or non-endowed – is evidence of the spirit of generosity of individuals and families seeking to make a difference in our community today, tomorrow and forever.

Donor Advised FundsA personal approach to giving.Establishing an Advised Fund allows you to make a gift to the Community Foundation and then remain actively involved in suggesting uses for your gift, targeting the issues you care about most. Donor Advised Funds can also be a cost effective alternative to a Private or Family Foundation.

How to apply for a grant

We welcome applications from nonprofit organizations in the Tri-Cities area and encourage organizations seeking a grant to contact us. Information on our funding priorities, various grant programs and guidelines for submitting applications can be found on our Web site, www.ghacf.org.

FocusProposals that help organizations deliver services more effectively, enhance cooperation and collaboration, address emerging needs or try new approaches, positively impact a large number of people for the resources invested, encourage leveraging and matching grant opportunities from multiple funders, or focus on prevention, receive priority consideration.

ProcessApplications are accepted several times a year, generally during January, June, and October. Foundation staff and the volunteer Grants and Program Committee carefully evaluate and review all applications. The Board of Trustees makes final funding decisions on programs that will have the greatest impact on the needs and growth of our community.

Enhancing the quality of life for the people of the Tri-CitiesThe Community Foundation invests each year in programs and organizations that are working to enhance the quality of life for the people in the Tri-Cities. Through our grants, we seek to build a stronger, healthier, more vibrant community in the areas of arts and culture, education, the environment, health, human services, community development, and youth.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our donors, who made all of our grants in 2008 possible, and to our many nonprofit partners whose effective use of these resources is helping to improve and enhance the lives of people in our community. The following are a sampling of some of the grants made during the year.G

Foundation Grants Helping Familiesin all our Neighborhoods

CALL 2-1-1The Issue: More people than ever before are finding themselves in need of help with utility bills, rent and mortgage payments, transportation, and emergency housing, yet they are unfamiliar with the complex and ever-growing maze of Health & Human Service agencies and programs. CALL 2-1-1 is there to help. Over 10,400 Ottawa County callers contacted 2-1-1 in 2008. Calls from Tri-Cities area rose 21% over a one-year period, with the increases expected to continue through 2009. Foundation Response: A grant of $19,998 will help CALL 2-1-1 increase their capacity to handle the growing number of calls through the development of a new Volunteer Program. An active, trained volunteer pool will enable CALL to respond more quickly to the increase in calls.

Tri-Cities Ministries CounselingThe Issue: When people face the crises of financial difficulties, personal mental health issues, such as depression, hopelessness, and suicidal thoughts become more prevalent. Tri-Cities Ministries Counseling (TCM) is reporting not only a dramatic increase in clients, but clients are seeking help with more complex issues requiring more in-depth therapy. Foundation Response: A grant of $10,000 will help TCM meet the increased demand for services for those seeking counseling help.

Center for Women in TransitionThe Issue: The Center for Women in Transition (CWIT) is seeing more clients in their Tri-Cities office and placing more and more individuals and families in Emergency and Shelter Housing at a time when state and federal financial support has decreased. Foundation Response: To help CWIT meet the increased demand for services, the Community Foundation provided a grant of $24,000.

Love, INCThe Issue: Transportation is a huge issue for people in financial crisis. It is difficult for people to get to their doctor appointments, to job interviews, or to Social Service Agencies located in the southern part of the County. Foundation Response: A grant from the Families in Crisis Fund is making it possible for clients of any of the “Safety Net” organizations to arrange free rides provided by Love, INC volunteers.

These grants will provide support for those facing issues of unemployment, domestic violence, counseling, and basic needs for food, shelter, transportation, and utility assistance. Hospice House Provides Compassionate Care

There is a place where end-of-life care is provided around the clock in a cozy, home-like environment. In addition to expert pain control and symptom management, this special care might also include a soothing massage, snuggling under a homemade quilt, beautiful music, visits from loved ones or the smell of warm cookies from the oven.

For over 25 years, Hospice of North Ottawa Community has helped individuals with a terminal illness and their families face their final days with dignity, courage and strength. Most often care is provided in the home of the patient. However, when staying home is not possible, Hospice now has expanded its services through its new Hospice House located at Heartwood Lodge, funded in part by grants from the Greatest Needs Fund, the Marion A. and Ruth K. Sherwood Family Fund, the William H. and Dorothy Young Mixer Fund, and many Donor Advised Funds of the Foundation.

There patients and their loved ones can sit and enjoy a peaceful view of the rolling, wooded dunes. They can feel safe to grieve and know that compassionate caregivers will provide support through this difficult time. Families can gather with loved ones, old memories can be shared and new memories made. And, one can live fully until the very end of life with dignity and in comfort, surrounded by a community of support.

Lynne Sherwood (L) and Martha Erickson (R), members of the Board of the Marion A. and Ruth K. Sherwood Family Fund, visit the newly opened Hospice House at Heartwood Lodge.

As part of the 25th Anniversary of the Grand Haven Boardwalk – a community campaign was launched to raise money to improve, repair and maintain this landmark. To date, almost 1000 bricks which will be engraved with the donors’ names have been sold and will be laid in islands along the Boardwalk.

This campaign has been a bright spot in our community in the midst of economic

challenges. “This campaign has really turned into a local stimulus package with all the work being done by local contractors and has given our community something to rally around,” says Ken Formsma, Community Volunteer who is leading the campaign efforts.

Thank you to the many people, both near and far, who have left their mark in this

community attraction. Your generosity will preserve this special place for future generations!

There is still plenty of time to purchase a brick. Donors can go to the Foundation website at www.ghacf.org and download a brick form. Your gift is tax deductible – why not give a boardwalk brick to a loved one for the next gift giving occasion?

The BoardwalkTurns 25!

Donors who supported the Boardwalk campaign with a gift of $10,000 will be recognized with an engraved Boulder placed in the landscape along the Boardwalk.

Nobody needs to be reminded that the cost of college tuition is rising at an astounding pace. At the same time, with the competitive job market, the need for advanced education is paramount. The Gauthier Family Scholarship Fund has been helping students fulfill their dreams of an education at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan since 1999. In that time, 30 scholarships have been awarded to area students who are pursuing a degree in mechanical or electrical engineering at Michigan Tech.

Barb Gauthier generously started this fund in 1998 as a memorial for her husband, Donald, who passed away in 1997. The Gauthiers have lived in Spring Lake for many years and started the Donald Engineering Company in 1963. Donald Engineering earned its success by a firm commitment to detail, education and service. Barb’s commitment to education is further realized by her generosity to their Scholarship Fund here at the Foundation.

Now their son, Mark Gauthier, is continuing the family tradition as President of Donald Engineering. Mark states, “My Dad always believed in rewarding hard work and offering employment opportunities to qualified individuals.” He went on to say, “This Fund will be around forever to assist college students who, like my Dad, are interested in a career in mechanical engineering.”

The Gauthier family has combined their generous spirit with their interest in engineering to create this family legacy. Over the years this Scholarship Fund has made a difference in many lives – just like one Gauthier Scholarship recipient who wrote, “My goal is to be the best mechanical engineer in the field – I will not let you down and I will make you proud!”

If you would like more information on creating your own Scholarship Fund, please call the Foundation Development Office at 842-6378.

The Gauthier Family Scholarship Fund A Tradition at Michigan Technological University

“A Scholarship Fund seemed like the perfect way for our family to give back – we believe in supporting our community and helping others,” Barbara Gauthier

Scholarships Help People Pursue Dreams

“Thank you very much for your financial support for the start of my college career. After looking at the cost for school next year, I became quite overwhelmed. Knowing that I was going to need a lot of financial help, I applied for the Community Foundation Scholarship, along with a few others. My high school counselor made a big deal about applying for this scholarship, and the first thing that came to my mind was ‘Everyone will apply for this scholarship, which means there will be a lot of competition!’ I thought it impossible that I would be selected for this scholarship. Having my name called during our awards ceremony and receiving this scholarship filled me with great joy! I am honored to receive your generous donation….Your kindness has touched my life, and will help me pursue my dreams. I will never forget the charitable donation you have blessed me with. God bless you and your family.”

Setting aside something for charity will not only help you leave a legacy in our community and strengthen and enhance our community in the future, but it also may reduce your estate taxes. Legacy Society members ensure that in good times and bad, our community is cared for – and we are most grateful.

Annually, we gather the Legacy Society members for a special event. The pictures on the preceding page are a collection of past Legacy events. If you would like more information on making a planned gift to the Community Foundation, please call the Foundation’s Development Office at 842-6378.

This year, our Youth Advisory Council (YAC) was recognized with one of five Great Grant & Community Initiative awards at the Michigan Community Foundations’ Youth Project (MCFYP) Summer Youth Leadership Conference, held at Michigan State University, June 26-28, 2009. Their multi-faceted grant was made to address critical needs of families and children in the Tri-Cities, and included: $1,300 to Love, INC to purchase two Gleaners Food Trucks; $5,000 to double the number of families the YAC adopted for Christmas through the Salvation Army; $1,625 to Love, INC to purchase 25 mattresses for their bed ministry; $2,000 to the People Center to purchase children’s winter hats, mittens and boots; $2,000 each to Love, INC, Salvation Army and the People Center to purchase pantry items; $1,000 each to Love, INC and Salvation Army to purchase gas cards for their clients; $1,200 to purchase and hand-tie blankets for the People Center; and $5,000 to assist with the Community Foundation’s Families in Crisis Initiative.

“I am extremely proud of our young people,” said Carol Bedient, Grants & Program Director and YAC Advisor. “Their creative response to the economic crisis of families in our community has had a very real impact.”

Our Community Foundation offers young people an opportunity through YAC to serve as grantmakers and stewards of resources for the benefit of youth in the Tri-Cities community. Each year approximately 20 teens from each of the local high schools have the responsibility of evaluating proposals and recommending grants from the Youth Fund. In addition to grant making, these youth engage in volunteer service projects that enable them to learn about the problems and issues that face our community. YAC cultivates leadership and problem-solving skills among its members and lays the foundation for them to become tomorrow’s philanthropists and community leaders.

As a special tribute to young Michael Herman, a Grand Haven High School student and soccer stand-out who died in a tragic car accident, a group of neighbors and friends set out to develop a neighborhood soccer field where Mike often played. Grants from the Youth Fund and the Greatest Needs Fund provided enhancements to the field which now includes a softball field, an ice skating rink, and one of the best soccer fields around the Tri-Cities.
