PRESENTATION OF COLOURS

The flags of Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States of America were presented by the Colour Party of members of the Northern Alberta Veterans' Degree Team from Edmonton and area under the direction of Chuck Slater.

The Canadian Flag We now present our Flag, the symbol of unity and sovereignty. Between bars of red on a field of white, it blazons forth in all its autumn glory, the Canadian Maple Leaf, whose eleven points represent the ten Provinces and the Territories, which comprise our great Country. To Freemasons, the RED symbolizes the dauntless courage of our forefathers, whom we emulate; the WHITE, that blameless purity of life and conduct, to which we aspire; and the POINTS, the eleven knightly virtues of which patriotism is the greatest and to which we are dedicated. This emblem forcefully reminds us that on these moral qualities our great Nation was founded, and on their preservation, its future greatness depends. Finally, it inspires in us reverence for Him to whom we ever fervently pray. God save our Queen and heaven bless, the Maple Leaf forever----LONG MAY IT WAVE

“O Canada”

The Flag of the United States of America We now present the Stars and Stripes, the Flag of the United States of America. Its stripes represent the thirteen original States, its stars, the original thirteen and the additional thirty-seven States which have been successfully united within that great Republic. In its respect for the freedom of the nations throughout the world, and its support of freedom throughout the world, the Stars and Stripes blazon forth as a sure pledge of liberty, equality and fraternity. In unity of that pledge – long may it wave.

“Star Spangled Banner”

The Flag of the United Kingdom We now present the Union Jack, the emblem of freedom and democracy. As its component crosses were successfully combined to symbolize the voluntary union of free peoples, so may it continue to typify the greater unity of the free world. May the red, the colour of the sacrificial blood of the martyrs, the white, like the snowy lambskin of Masonry and the blue, like the changeless vault of the sky symbolically depicting courage, purity and truth. Whenever it floats wide world round, it blazes forth a sure pledge of liberty, equality and fraternity for all people everywhere. Long may it wave.

“God Save the Queen”

The Colour Party consisted of (Canadian Flag) Neil Lonsbury and John Slade (United Kingdom Flag) Bob Cameron and Chuck Slater (United States Flag) Allan Brown and Isaac Bower-Berkhoven. (Applause)

OPENING HYMN: "He Leadeth Me" Words by Joseph Gilmore (1862) Music by William Bradbury (1864)

He leadeth me: O blessed thought! O words with heavenly comfort fraught! Whate’er I do, where’er I be, still ‘tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

Refrain – He leadeth me! He leadeth me! By his own hand he leadeth me! His faithful follower I would be, for by his hand he leadeth me!

Sometimes ‘mid scenes of deepest gloom, sometimes where Eden’s bowers bloom, by waters calm, o’er troubled sea, still ‘tis his hand that leadeth me.

And when my task on earth is done, when by thy grace the victory’s won, even death’s cold wave I will not flee, since God through Jordan leadeth me.

READINGS FROM THE VOTSL: First Reading: Psalm 23 (Responsive) Grand Chaplain: The LORD is my shepherd, Grand Chapter: I shall not want. Grand Chaplain: He makes me to lie down in green pastures, Grand Chapter: He leads me beside still waters: Grand Chaplain: He restores my soul. Grand Chapter: He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Grand Chaplain: Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for you are with me; Grand Chapter: your rod and staff, they comfort me. Grand Chaplain: You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; Grand Chapter: you anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Grand Chaplain: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, Grand Chapter: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Second Reading: Revelations 7: 9-17

THE GRAND CHAPLAIN’S ADDRESS “Compliments of the House”

“I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever” [Psalm 23: 6] An elderly man phoned his son one October evening. “Son,” he said, “I hate to tell you this, but your mother and I can’t stand each other anymore. We want to live out the rest of our lives in peace, so we’re getting a divorce. I’m telling you now, so you and your sister won’t be too shocked when I leave”. He hangs up and the son immediately phones his sister with the news. Horrified his sister calls her father. “Dad!” she exclaims, “Don’t do anything until we get there! We’ll book our flights now and both of us will be there by Friday evening!” “Oh, all right,” her father agrees. “I guess I can wait until then”. He hangs up and calls out to his wife, “Okay, honey, they’re coming for Thanksgiving. But what will we do to get them here for Christmas?!” There are people who avoid going home–and, to be fair, some of them have good reason–but for most of us, “going home” brings wonderful images of sights and sounds and smells, and memories of warm and loving relationships. It was no different for the Psalmist: that’s why he ends the Twenty-Third Psalm the way he does: “Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the lord for ever”. “I will dwell in the house of the lord for ever”. Let’s think for a minute about our desire for home, and God’s promise of home. The desire for home. Remember Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, tapping her heels together three times and repeating, “There’s no place like home”? Or the little alien from ET, stranded and desperate to return home? Or Valjean’s moving solo from Les Miserables: “Bring him home”? And then there are all the common phrases we use every day: “All the comforts of home. Come home, all is forgiven. Keep the home fires burning. There's no place like home. Make yourself at home”. It’s a powerful image: ‘home’. It speaks to us of a place where we’re known, welcomed, cared for, loved, supported in good times and bad. And if that’s missing from our life we long for it desperately even if we don’t know what it is. It’s not always easy to define what ‘home’ is, but we always know when we’ve arrived. That is our desire, that is the longing we have: to be at home. C S Lewis, in his famous sermon from 1942 called “The Weight of Glory”, made the observation that all the desires we experience in our life can be fulfilled in one way or another. When we are tired, we can rest. When we are hungry, we can eat. When we are thirsty, we can drink. But there is one longing for which there is no complete satisfaction in this life: the longing for home. Lewis suggested that the reason we cannot fill that longing completely is because this life, this Earth, is not our final home. It is a truth to which we point in the “General Charge” we hear at every Craft Lodge Installation when we speak of “feeling and adoring the higher destination” of humanity; and in Chapter when we pray: “May we be endowed with every good and perfect gift while travelling along the rugged path of life, and finally, may we all be admitted within the veil of heaven to the full enjoyment of life eternal”. Our final destination, our fullest life, our real home, can only be found where God is. And that is the promise. That is the promise God makes to each of us – that we will dwell forever in the place prepared just for us by the hands of the Master Builder Himself. What will that place be like? I have no idea. All scripture tells us is that one day, by the grace of God, we will all come home to God. Period. Full stop. And actually, that’s enough for me. When the end comes and it’s time for us to go home, we will be with God. The 2002 film “Antwone Fisher” is based on the true story of its author, an African-American man named Antwone ‘Fish’ Fisher. As a young man, Fisher was angry and temperamental, prone to violent outbursts. After assaulting a fellow sailor in the Navy, he is demoted, fined, and sent to a Navy psychiatrist, Dr Jerome Davenport (played by Denzel Washington). As the film unfolds, however, we learn that Fisher had a horrific childhood... His father was killed before he was born. His teenage mother gave birth to him in the women’s prison where she was an inmate. He was placed in foster care, where he was mentally and physically abused by members of the household for twelve years. When, as a teenager, he had finally had enough and stood up to the malevolence of his foster-mother, she threw him out into the street. Then he was sent to a brutal reform school. Finally, Fisher ended up in the Navy, angry and alone. With the help – and eventual friendship – of the psychiatrist, he confronts his terrible past and begins a quest to find the one thing he wants most: family. Somewhere to belong. Somebody who won’t abandon him. People who will recognise, welcome, love and support him. In other words: a home. There’s a wonderful scene towards the end of the film. After a long and painful search, he finally does find his real family. He walks up to the house of his Aunt Annette, whom he met earlier that day. He rings the doorbell and waits, not knowing what might wait for him on the other side of the door. But instantly, the door is thrown open and he sees a living room filled with people. Aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins greet him and embrace him. The kitchen table is groaning under the weight of an enormous feast; and sitting around the table are his elderly relatives. His grandmother raps on the table for silence and beckons to him to approach. She cups his face in her hands, looks deeply into his eyes and says just one word: “Welcome”.

12

Antwone Fisher was home. Greeted, received, acknowledged, welcomed, supported, lifted up in victory or defeat, loved in triumph or disgrace. No matter what, he belonged. No matter what, he had come home. Guess what? Whether you and I experienced that with our own family or not, one thing is certain: one day, all of us will experience the ultimate home-coming. One day, all of us will experience what the men we remember this evening have already experienced. We will see the doors flung open, the multitude of the faithful waiting to greet us. We will see the arms of God reaching out in love; we will hear the voice of the Most High saying to us – to you and me – “Welcome!” “And we will dwell in the house of the lord for ever...”

COMMEMORATION and ROSE CEREMONY Grand Chaplain: And so we gather to remember the Companions of our fellowship who in this past year have laid down their working tools and journeyed to the Grand Chapter Above. We give thanks for the light they shed in our world for they were good men, true and trusty; men whose lives influenced ours; men whose wisdom and loyalty will be missed. In a sure and certain hope, we now call them to mind...

One Minute’s Silence

PRAYER OF COMMENDATION: (Said by All) Architect of all creation, grant us faith that by day and by night, in all times and in all places, we may without fear entrust those who are dear to us to your never-failing love – in this life, and in the life to come. Amen. So mote it be.

CLOSING HYMN: “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah” Words (Welsh) by William Williams (1745) Tune ‘Cwm Rhondda’ by John Hughes (1905)

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah Pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but Thou art mighty Hold me with Thy powerful hand. Bread of heaven, bread of heaven Feed me till I want no more. Feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain Whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fiery, cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through.

Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer, Be Thou still my strength and shield. Be Thou still my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside, Death of death, and hell’s destruction Land me safe on Canaan’s side. Songs of praises, songs of praises I will ever give to Thee. I will ever give to Thee.

REPORT OF THE GRAND FIRST PRINCIPAL

To the Most Excellent the Grand Chapter of Alberta: Good Morning Companions. One year ago, you placed the leadership of this Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Alberta in my hands, and I trust that you have not been disappointed with that performance – or at least I hope not. I had some pretty big shoes to fill, particularly having known the past dozen or so Grand First Principals who have preceded me, many of whom are personal friends of mine. I wish to thank all the Companions that have been so kind and supportive during the visits to their Chapters. Without your support no Grand Chapter can be successful. After all you are Grand Chapter. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. There are some in the Craft and Capitular Masonry who felt that being the Grand First Principal of Royal Arch Masons and holding down full employment with the Grand Lodge of Alberta as Grand Secretary was not doable. I can now safely say, it was doable, one only needs to plan and plan carefully and plan well in advance. As this journey was still in the thought process, planning had already begun, and if I can make a recommendation to anyone who is seeking to become a Grand First Principal, start early. You need to examine your own capabilities. Ask yourself if you are prepared with respect to your knowledge of the Craft and Capitular Masonry? Do you have the ability to effectively communicate with the Companions? Most importantly, how will this impact your family? There will be times when you are not readily available to them, but one needs to keep in mind that family should always come first. So Companions, if you are considering this journey, be sure to examine what is required of you when taking on this commitment – and it is a COMMITMENT – and your qualifications for that high office. Yes, with careful planning one can take on the responsibilities of a Grand First Principal and still keep up with a full time vocational commitment. With that I thank the Craft and Companions for their patience. Thank you again. Companions, “I have a Dream” those famous words echoed by Martin Luther King, have likewise been chosen to be the theme for our Grand Chapter for the past year and which have been instrumental in laying the foundation within each of us and the finally “the keystone becoming the head stone of the corner”, that strengthens each of us and be that model that the Great Architect of the Universe has laid down. Companions this is a great Fraternity. We need to live by the principles that have been given to us by the Great Architect of the Universe, conduct ourselves accordingly when in the public eye and, most importantly, “Lead by Example”. We can lead by example by carefully mentoring our new Companions, by explaining the purposes of the Degrees of the Holy Royal Arch, by providing education. And yes, to some, education may seem difficult, but as you have heard through the visitations to your Chapters by the Grand Chapter Officers who have provided education by simply referring to the Ritual or using the Volume of the Sacred Law, it is not difficult at all. On one of my fraternal visits to a Chapter, for example, I looked at the Charter and found much information that lead to an excellent education discussion. We learned that the Chapter was not chartered under the Grand Chapter of Manitoba, as many believe, but rather the Grand Chapter of Canada in the Province of Ontario. One always assumes because the Grand Lodge of Alberta was chartered under the Grand Lodge of Manitoba it would be safe to say that the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Alberta had followed the same footsteps (the Grand Chapter of Manitoba was not Chartered until April of 1923). On closer examination of the Charter we

17

Page 20: Grand Chapter of Alberta Proceedings 2012€¦ · Princess Alexandria of Kent in the Legislative Assembly Chambers, Legislative Building, Regina, Saskatchewan. Besides sports Jerry

also found that one of the principal officers at the time of the chartering of the Chapter became the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Alberta – MWBro G.E. Cruickshank, who was Grand Master in 1927. The story just doesn’t end there we found out that the Grand Chapter of Alberta in actual fact did not get officially recognized until September 12, 1916 by MEC William S.R. Murch at the fifty-ninth Annual Convocation, when a resolution was introduced, adopted and gave authority for the formation of a Grand Body in any province as soon as proper memorial had been received from a majority of the Companions and Chapter of a Province, expressing their well-considered desire to establish a Provincial Grand Body. Initially the Grand Chapter of Alberta was formed on 29th of May 1914, a date that we recognize as official, however the then Grand First Principal MEC D.F. MacWatt had declared the Grand Chapter to be irregular, spurious and clandestine and he therefore suspended all Chapters and Companions that gave adhesion to or continued to support the irregular organization. The Grand Chapter of Alberta was referred to in the Masonic Sun Bulletin Volume XVII No. 8 as the “The Alberta Difficulty” considered as being insubordinate. This whole issue was over the supremacy over the Territory which was already the Province of Alberta. This type of education has fuelled many conversations and no doubt will continue to do so if we take an interest in the important events that took place within this jurisdiction or within our own Chapter. VISITATIONS Each of the Chapters within the Jurisdiction was visited once in an official capacity, and there were some that received additional visits. I must say that my reception on each of those visits will be etched in my memory for years to come. One visit that I will always remember is the November 11 Remembrance Day service where Stoney Chapter #41 was in attendance and I made an unannounced visit. Thank you to the Companions of Stoney Chapter for receiving me and allowing me to be part of your delegation. I was only able to make one visit to a Sister Jurisdiction, and that was to the Grand Chapter of Saskatchewan. Eight Companions made the trip to Regina. We were able to witness the installation of two Saskatchewan Companions that have been very close friends of mine for years, MEC Bill Fitzsimmons as Grand First Principal and REC Bill Pizzey as Grand Second Principal and of course the divesting of MEC Brian McKay – a friend, colleague and retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police Superintendent. The Alberta delegation had a photo opportunity with the Lt. Governor of Saskatchewan. What a proud moment. The Lt. Governor took time out of his busy schedule to speak to each of the Alberta delegates, including our ladies. DISTRICT MEETINGS The only district meeting that I was not able to attend was District #1 and there is no doubt in my mind that REC John Cosgrove, by his very nature and solid commitment, had a very successful meeting. The three other District Meetings were well organized, handled with great confidence and also well attended. The Grand District Superintendents for 2011/2012 are to be congratulated for all their work within their respective Districts. I was extremely pleased with the positive comments that were received on their performance from the Companions. You represented this Grand Chapter with great pride and dedication; you represented the Grand First Principal with honour, and filled in when I was not able to, and for this I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It gives me great pleasure in bestowing the title of Past Grand District Superintendent and the rank of Right Excellent Companion on the following Companions: District #1 - R.Ex. Comp. John Cosgrove District #2 - R.Ex. Comp. Garry Hodge District #3 - R.Ex. Comp. Duncan Strachan District #4 - R.Ex. Comp. Jeffrey Schlender Congratulations, Right Excellent Companion Grand District Superintendents. You did us proud. Companions, please give them a round of applause. ESPECIAL CONVOCATIONS Grand Chapter Officers were involved in two special events during the year, the first being the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Otuskwan Chapter #9 and the second event the Consecration & Dedication of a Chapter in Didsbury, registered as Mountainview Chapter #42 on the register of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Alberta. We are very pleased to see the return of Royal Arch in Didsbury after a 60 year void. Congratulations to Mountainview Chapter, particularly to MEC David Boone, MEC Jim Lore and REC David Switzer who saw the need to have a Chapter along the Queen Elizabeth II Highway between Edmonton and Calgary. Thank you, VEC Sharam, and also the Grand Third Principal, REC David Switzer and the Grand Organist, VEC Robert J. Harrison. Grand Chapter wishes to extend our sympathy to those families and friends who have lost a loved one. Our prayers are with you, and may the Grand Architect of the Universe provide that spiritual strength. The loss of these Companions, who have been the pillars of our respective Chapters and who have provided great leadership will certainly be felt, but they will always remain in our memories – in recent months we lost MEC Peter Fairbridge and MEC Jim Crawford, two of the finest gentlemen in Capitular Freemasonry. As Grand First Principal this year, I had three difficult tasks to perform, the first being to find the appropriate words for the presentation of a Royal Arch Mason certificate to James Currie Sr., for his late son, Companion James Currie Jr.; second the presentation posthumously of a Life Membership, which was in the works prior to his passing, for VEC Walter Anderson – the life membership was presented to his brother, Brother and Companion VEC Cecil Anderson – and the third was to deliver a Masonic Eulogy in Lodge for MWBro and MEC James Crawford, a personal friend of mine and personal friend of yours. Who could not be a friend of Jim? MEC Crawford was truly a pillar in all the Masonic bodies. We thank the Great Architect of the Universe for allowing us to have the opportunity of sharing our lives with all these departed Companions. GENERAL OBSERVATIONS Is there room for improvement in our Chapters? The answer would have to be “yes”. How much improvement is needed? That can vary from Chapter to Chapter. What is the main area of concern within our Chapters? The first and foremost is the lack of attendance. We need to examine why we suffer from this poor attendance. Some of it may be because of our “Snowbirds” but that is not the entire reason; we know of Chapters that have 50 plus members and not all are “Snowbirds”. It could be that the Companions have lost interest, perhaps meetings are boring or maybe the Chapter has not maintained contact with the membership. These are areas that a Chapter needs to focus on and set up a program to improve. It may be that some of the Companions not attending are disappointed with the work in the Chapter and if that is the case, what are we going to do about it? Naturally, fix it. Companions, you have all been in a Chapter where you have witnessed, during the opening of the Chapter, the Sharing of the Word by the Principal Officers not being done correctly or in the properly sequence. What we do about it, naturally, is correct it through education. We all have responsibility. Whether we are Past Grand Officers, Past Chapter Officers or even Companions we can all take a part in improving our work, setting up Chapters, etc. We have lots to teach and it is time we take PRIDE in our Noble Craft. By taking PRIDE in our Supreme and Royal Art we will no doubt bring back some our absent Companions. As I mentioned earlier, lead by example. We, as Past Officers, need to play a greater role in developing good leaders, guiding, teaching the new and younger Companions and working as team to accomplish a common goal. If I can be so bold to say, just another one of my dreams, Companions, is that when a Chapter loses a member through a Demit or Suspension or death, for each loss it finds two replacements. There is no doubt that we will see growth within this Fraternity. The replacements will need to be quality candidates, for this dream was not with the attention of increasing numbers. Companions, there are two issues that need to be referred to the Committee on the Work for clarification, as there seems to be some confusion within the Chapters as to proper procedures and protocol. The first issue is the wearing of a Fellowcraft apron in the Mark Master Mason degree, and rather than continually having this as controversial topic, it is best to nip it now. Whether of the Canadian Rite or the Ancient York Rite, I believe we need to separate ourselves from what the Craft is doing. We need to understand that this is the Royal Arch and we can not allow the invasion of certain procedures or protocols from other rites. Therefore the Committee on the Work will need to provide a ruling and ensure that all Chapters are on the same page. The second issue occurs when attending to the Pedestal at the Closing of the Chapter and the term used when directing to attend that Pedestal. Some are of the opinion that the term “Disarrange the Word” is the appropriate term and others feel strongly that only the term “You will attend to the Pedestal”. We need the Committee on the Work to clear up that confusion. Companions we have all experienced such differences and it is the small issues that create potential animosities within our Craft. Another issue that has been observed in the past year or so is in the “Sharing of the Word.” We need not have this addressed by the Committee on the Work, but rather we all need to take the time to study the ritual. This includes the Principal Officers of the Chapter. After all they are the ones we all look up to and they LEAD BY EXAMPLE. Perhaps it is time that we start working on the same page and furthermore take the PRIDE that our gentle Craft stands for.

APPRECIATIONS First, I want to extend my sincere thanks to the Elected and Appointed Grand Chapter Officers for the support that they have given me as your Grand First Principal. What a dream team. Secondly, I want to recognize all the Past Grand First Principals that provided me with that confidence and support throughout my journey. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Many of you were not able to make visits with me due to other commitments or simply the distance was too great. It is the thought that counts. This past year two of our Past Grand First Principals underwent major surgery. MEC Stan Harbin and MEC James Lore were in recovery mode and as Grand First Principal I constantly kept you in my prayers for a successful recovery, and a successful recovery it was. Thank you for your support. Special thanks to Most Excellent Companions Lyle Dowdell – faithful follower, Richard Glasgow, David Boone, Donald Gillies, Gerry Tetzloff and the big tease MEC Jesse Carr, or maybe he wasn't teasing. Special thanks go to our Grand Scribe, REC Marvyn Rogers. What an outstanding job you did throughout this year. You looked after the business of Grand Chapter by making the timely decisions, whether on my behalf or not, and as you know, I am a great believer in hands off – leave it to the wise one and in this case the Grand Scribe. Thank you Marvyn. Special thanks to Stella and Richard Glasgow for the times they housed me throughout the past several years. One can only say that Stella is an outstanding lady; after all she has to put up with Richard, who constantly needles her, particularly when there are visitors. Of course we wouldn't know what he is like when there are no visitors. And now on behalf of the spouse that I do not have, I want to give special thanks to Mrs. Diane Gillies, Mrs. Vivian Boone, Mrs. Stella Glasgow, Mrs. Anne Rogers and R.Ex. Comp. Ken Mingo for helping organize the Ladies' Program. I am hoping that by selecting the Reynolds Museum at Wetaskiwin as a site to tour and have lunch at you will find much pleasure and satisfaction. Thank you to the visiting Jurisdictions – you are one more element that makes this Convocation a success. To my special friends with whom I have had a great deal of involvement during their progress through the Grand Line of the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan, and now through the Grand Chapter of Saskatchewan, thank you MEC Bill Fitzsimmons and your lady and REC Bill Pizzey and your lady, thank you for being here today. Thank you to the General Grand Chapter, you have been a very committed officer of the General Grand Chapter and you seem to always have the time to be with us. Thank you. Now keeping the best to the last, the most important thank you is to all the Companions of the Grand Chapter of Alberta, you are Grand Chapter and without your support no Grand First Principal can reach this milestone. You are an awesome bunch. We hope you will remain for tonight’s Grand Chapter Banquet and continue the bond and friendship that we most certainly cherish. God Bless you all. THANK YOU.

Respectfully submitted, Jerry W. Kopp, Grand First Principal

REPORT OF THE GRAND SECOND PRINCIPAL

Since our 2011 Grand Convocation the year has sped by with many activities and events. I have had the privilege of accompanying our Grand First Principal to the following events:

• Grand Convocation in Saskatchewan • District meetings for Districts 2, and 3; • Hangingstone Chapter #40 Installation and BBQ; • Bethel Chapter #36 August Meeting; • Strathmore and Eheyeh's 13th Annual Royal Arch Badlands Mini Field Day; and the • Consecration and Dedication of Mountainview Chapter #42.

Upon the request of our Grand First Principal, I represented Most Excellent Companion Jerry Kopp and the Grand Chapter of Alberta at the:

• Grand Convocation of British Columbia and the Yukon in Victoria, BC; • District 1 District Meeting at Stoney Chapter #41; and the • Grand Masters Levee on January 1st were I had the honor of presenting a cheque on behalf of all

Royal Arch Masons of Alberta for the "WE CAN HELP" program • Grand Session Jobs Daughters

All of my visits have been extremely enjoyable and educational both on a Masonic and personnel basis. I had opportunity to enjoy the company of old friends and make many new friends. Planning and preparation for our 2012 Grand Convocation is now complete thanks to the foresight and work of our Grand 1st and 3rd Principals, but most of all our Grand Scribe "E" who is a tireless and well coordinated individual whom I believe never sleeps based on the e-mails I get time stamped all hours of the night. I would personally like to thank our Scribe "E" REC Marvyn Rogers for his support, guidance and wisdom, which he so quietly and astutely imparts on all Grand Chapter Officers, who are like students whom he is charged with educating. Respectfully submitted, Walter (Wally) Watts, Grand Second Principal

REPORT OF THE GRAND THIRD PRINCIPAL

Most Excellent Grand First Principal and Companion: To date, this has been a very exciting year since the Grand Convocation last May. I have been able to visit most of the Chapters in Southern Alberta as well as attending District 2 and 3 Meetings. I was able to attend the Consecration of our newest chapter in Didsbury on December 10th, 2011. It was my great privilege to sit as ``Z`` for the opening and closing. There was a great turnout of Grand Chapter Officers for the ceremony. Very Impressive. I have had the privilege of accompanying MEC Jerry Kopp as well as REC Duncan Strachan GDS District 3 on several visits. The plans for Grand Convocation are underway. It looks to be an impressive two days – as usual. Thank you to all past and present Grand Chapter Officers who have been only too willing to give assistance to me. It has been much appreciated. Respectfully submitted, David C. Switzer, Grand Third Principal Greetings from the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Manitoba M.Ex. Comp. Richard LaRonde, Grand First Principal, brought greetings and best wishes to the Companions of the Grand Chapter of Alberta.

REPORT OF THE GRAND SCRIBE EZRA

To the M.Ex. Grand First Principal, Officers and Companions of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Alberta: I hereby submit my eighth report to you as your Grand Scribe “E”. The Grand Scribe Ezra’s office did not receive all of the 2011 Annual Returns as of the end January, 2012. Annual Returns were not received from 3 chapters: Norwood #18 (Edmonton), Lebanon #38 (Stettler) and Stoney #41 Since then, I have received the reports from all three. I would ask that the Grand Executive authorize the Committee on Jurisprudence and the Constitution and the Finance Committee to look into means of “encouraging” chapters to submit this report on time. I stress, it is only the report that I need so desperately, the financial statement and payment can be sent later. The form is not complicated and I am willing to help any chapter that needs assistance. I should mention that the assistance of the Grand Dist. Supt.’s has been must supportive and helpful in ensuring moderate compliance with the above, if not always on time. Chapters are requested to follow the directions of the Finance Committee that all required regalia as stated in the Constitution of Grand Chapter is to be purchased from the Office of the Grand Scribe E. The purchase of regalia through the Office of the Grand Scribe E allows Grand Chapter to keep its per capita amount at a reasonable rate. The Grand Council and Grand Executive have approved the Royal Arch aprons and sashes which will result in maintaining the current costs at their present level. There are have been some cost increases from our suppliers. It should also be noted that one of the suppliers does not recommend, nor normally include, the plastic pouch. Reminder, if you are sending funds to the YEF, please ensure that they are made payable to the “Youth Endowment Fund”. It is a separate account from the regular Grand Chapter account. Following this report, including the 2011 Statistics, there is the breakdown of membership by Chapter. I wish to take this opportunity to publically thank:

• M.Ex. Comp. Jerry Kopp. Above all else, M.Ex. Comp. Kopp was a joy to work with as he was encouraging, understanding and fun. What a wonderful combination.

• R.Ex. Comp. Don Murray. I offer him my apologies. The plan to have the year-end moved to December 31st was meant to assist both the Grand Treasurer and the Auditor. Unfortunately, I didn’t make the best use of the time allotted and will be much more diligent in the future not that I have had a chance to work with the new deadlines.

• All of the Grand District Superintendents who have always responded to my requests and queries quickly and efficiently.

• Anne. As my number of years serving as G.S.E. have increased, her knowledge and assistance becomes more and more valuable and I definitely could not have done the work without her!!

REPORT OF THE GRAND TREASURER

M.Ex. Grand First Principal, Officers and Companions of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Alberta.

Our current earnings for the last ten months 0f 2011 are a loss of $6,718.68. If we would have had a full 12 month year, we would have had about $12,000.00 increase in revenue from the annual returns and about $2,000.00 in expense for the last 2 months. This would have given us a surplus of about $3,280.00 for the year. The new year will return to normal as the year will consist of the 12 months ending December 31, 2012. Our investment account is $85,874.18. All investments are in Guaranteed Investment certificates. The youth endowment fund has an investment total of $172,282.21. I want to thank Rt. Ex. Comp. Richard Kampjes who will be retiring from the Y. E. Fund committee. He did an excellent job as Chairman and will have the financial information on the fund in his report.

As a result of this meeting the following recommendations were presented to the Grand Executive:

• That the proposed budget for the 2012 year be adopted. • That the cost of all dispensations be increased from $5.00 to $15.00. • That the cost of all certificates be increased from $5.00 to $15.00. • As the current membership is estimated at 1186 members it was felt that there was no need to

increase the per capita fee for the next fiscal year. • That the honorariums for the Grand District Superintendents be increased from $125.00 to $

250.00. • That a “expert” panel be formed to review the honorariums for the Grand First, Second and

Third Principals, the Grand Scribe Ezra, Grand Treasurer, and the Grand District Superintendants. The recommendations from this review are to be presented at the next Grand Executive meeting in February 2013. It is requested that the Grand First Principal for the 2012 – 2013 year appoint this panel.

• That Rt. Ex. Companion James Ratchford be retained as the Auditor. The above recommendations were all approved at the Grand Executive Committee Meeting and by way of this report are being presented to the members at the Annual Grand Chapter Communication for ratification. Rt. Ex. Companion Rogers has requested that the committee look into the replacement of the current photocopier with a printer/copier combination. The current photocopier will need to be replaced with-in the next few years. The committee wishes to express our sincere thanks to Rt. Ex. Comp. Marvyn Rogers and Rt. Ex. Comp. Don Murray for the great efforts that they contribute to the operations of this Grand Chapter.

Respectfully submitted, R.Ex. Comp. Neil White, Chairman

MOTION: Moved by R.Ex. Comp. N. G. White, seconded by R.Ex. Comp. R. Taylor, that all of the above recommendations contained in the Report of the Committee on Audit and Finance be ratified. CARRIED.

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON WARRANTS AND DISPENSATIONS

R.Ex. Comp. M. Rogers advised there is a nil report.

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE CONDITION OF CAPITULAR MASONRY To the Most Excellent Grand First Principal, Most Excellent Companion Jerry W. Kopp, officers and members of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Alberta.

To the Most Excellent Grand First Principal , Most Excellent Companion Jerry Kopp, officers and members of the Grand Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons Of Alberta. The committee on the condition of Capitular Masonry has received reports from all four District Superintendants for the year 2011 – 2012 and after reviewing them report as follows: DISTRICT # 1 R.E. Companion John Cosgrove, Grand District Superintendant of District # 1 reported that he has completed all of his official visits and many fraternal visits as well. North Star Chapter has shown improvement from the previous year and it would appear that the membership has become more involved and appears much stronger moving forward. Wapiti Chapter continues to struggle, and because of the distance to other chapters, does not often have the benefit of visitors which, of course helps in encouraging the members of the chapter from attending as well. Norwood Chapter appears to have improved from last year as well, it’s reported that the membership is engaged and involved and the chapter is strong. Stoney Chapter continues to grow and has a steady group of visitors from the Edmonton chapter’s. This chapter ‘s future is strong. Edson Chapter continues to have difficulty, struggling for members. Long term outlook is not good unless they can organize a solid recruitment plan for membership.

29

Page 32: Grand Chapter of Alberta Proceedings 2012€¦ · Princess Alexandria of Kent in the Legislative Assembly Chambers, Legislative Building, Regina, Saskatchewan. Besides sports Jerry

Capital City Chapter is the strongest in the district. They support other chapters with frequent visits. The future of this chapter is strong. DISTRICT # 2 R.E. Companion Garry Hodge, Grand District Superintendant of District # 2 reported that he has completed all of his official visits, with the exception of Parklands Chapter in Wainwright, which will be done in April. and as well a number of fraternal visits. The report that was received by the committee did not provide specific detail regarding the various chapters within District # 2, rather an overall perspective about the general condition of the chapters. To highlight, all the chapters have challenges, and many new initiatives are being proposed and discussed, which it is hoped, will yield positive results. Three of the chapters are solid financially and have strong attendance for the meetings. The future of District # 2 is good, with the status quo being maintained by most and good potential for growth in at least two chapters. DISTRICT # 3 R.E. Companion Duncan Strachan, Grand District Superintendant of District # 3 reported he had completed all of his official visits , and had as well made many fraternal visits.. He reported that Eheyeh, Assiniboia and Harmony Chapters are all struggling with membership difficulties. Strathmore Chapter is assisting with Eheyeh by many members taking on dual membership to keep the chapter functioning and with that, hopefully encourage more member applications from the Drumheller area. Harmony and Assiniboia chapters do work together and assist each other at meetings which is creating a better outlook for both chapters. Otuskwan is a larger chapter which continues to bring in new members, but must ensure that these new members become engaged in the chapter meetings and functions. It was noted that Otuskwan celebrated their 100 anniversary during the year. The new chapter, Mountainview , located in Didsbury has now become an officially chartered chapter of the Grand Chapter of Alberta. They have a strong group of charter members who are making an all out effort to get new members from the lodges in the surrounding area. DISTRICT # 4 R.E. Companion Jeff Schlender, Grand District Superintendant of District # 4 reported that he has completed all of his official visits and some fraternal visits, and there were more fraternal visits planned before the end of his term. Alberta Chapter # 1 - It was noted that there appeared to be good fellowship within the chapter and that many members attended other chapters on a regular basis which of course prompts return visits as well. They could make more time for educational presentations . Some concern about payment of dues from a number of members, A very well run chapter with a good future. Shekinah Chapter # 4 - This chapter displays good fellowship, and regularly holds research and education evenings. The members from Shekinah often visit Hillvue chapter to assist in their meetings. Overall condition of chapter is good. Golden West # 5 - Ritual work is done very well and there appeared to be a strong bond with other chapters created by frequent visitations. They regularly ensure that research and education evenings are done, and overall condition of chapter is very good. It was noted that the monthly rent for their meetings is causing a concern. Hillvue # 15 - The membership in this chapter is small, but it continues to thrive with an excellent core of members. They do receive regular support from Shekinah chapter from Lethbridge which assists in their operations. They do regular research and education and endeavor to maintain the interest of the members. It was noted they are well known for their festive board. Crescent Chapter # 24 - Fellowship in this chapter appears to be very good. They regularly have research and education and present other items of general interest for discussion. Overall outlook for this chapter is much stronger than recent years. It was noted that their Scribe Ezra is retiring after 10 years at the position. GENERAL COMMENTS The information provided by the superintendants gave a good outline of their respective districts and again, it would appear that the overall condition of Capitular masonry in Alberta is good. We do again note there are quite a number of chapters with small membership numbers that must make continued efforts to build and maintain their numbers in order to ensure they may continue to be viable chapters within our Grand jurisdiction. The committee recommends to the Grand First Principal that the title of Right Excellent Companion be conferred and confirmed on:

• Right Excellent Companion John Cosgrove • Right Excellent Companion Garry Hodge • Right Excellent Companion Duncan Strachan • Right Excellent Companion Jeff Schlender

Respectfully submitted, V.Ex. Comp. Garth Border ( Chairman ) and M.Ex. Comp. Don Gillies.

REPORT OF THE GRAND HISTORIAN REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON LIBRARY, RESEARCH AND EDUCATION

To M.Ex. Comp Jerry Kopp, Grand First Principal, officers and members of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Alberta: This report will cover my roles as the Historian of Grand Chapter and my current chairmanship of the Library, Research and Education Committee. Chapter Historians One of the most significant points in the revised Constitution and Regulations adopted last Spring (at least from my point of view ) was the addition of the Historian as one of the Officers of a Chapter [Constitution 6.7, Regulations 3.40]. Unfortunately, either very few Historians were actually appointed – perhaps ten – or else these appointments were not recorded or reported. There was no official Ritual available last year for their Investiture, but the Committee on the Work, at the February Executive Committee meeting, approved the one that I used at Chapters around Calgary: I.Z. – Companion ….., you have been appointed Historian of this Chapter. It is your duty to collect and preserve all material of historical significance and to keep a record of all the significant events and activities of the Chapter. This Office plays an important role in maintaining the heritage of Royal Arch Masonry in general and of this Chapter in particular; the zeal and thoroughness with which you approach this responsibility will earn you the respect of future generations of Companions. Once more Historians are identified, I intend to enlist them in searches for Chapter histories and other specific Centennial material, such as photographs and biographies. Grand Chapter Proceedings I forwarded to the Website Committee suggestions for two web-centric initiatives. The first was the scanning of a set of Grand Chapter Proceedings and making them available and searchable on our website. At one point there were multiple bound sets of proceedings scattered around the province, but these have gradually disappeared; even single “fill-in” copies are now harder to find. One set of single copies would have their bindings removed and then be scanned as searchable PDF files. These Proceedings are already public documents – a partial set (the first 82 years) is in the Glen bow Archives. This initiative was endorsed by the Committee. Anniversary History Book The second suggestion concerned the 100th Anniversary History. I recommended that it be made available on the website, rather than as a printed copy, with the intention of making it a “living” document with ongoing addition and updating of historical material and Chapter histories. While this suggestion was endorsed by the Website Committee, it was not greeted with unanimous approval; more discussion will obviously be needed. Committee on Royal Arch Education At the February 2010 Executive Committee meeting, terms of reference for a new (or re-organized) Committee

on Royal Arch Education were approved, whose purpose would be “to embed Royal Arch education in this jurisdiction, by encouraging, supporting, facilitating and disseminating education resources, processes and outcomes at the personal, Chapter, District and Grand Chapter levels”. The implementation of this initiative was delayed by the development of the revised Constitution and Regulations, but there has been no progress since that was completed – although education always seems to be a topic of discussion. In the meantime, the LRE Committee will focus on building up library resources. Respectfully submitted, R.Ex. Comp. George Tapley, Grand Historian and Committee Chairman R.Ex. Comp. W. Seifert, V.Ex. REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE YOUTH ENDOWMENT FUND

M. Ex. Comp. Kopp, Grand Chapter Officers and Companions all: Since the last Grand Session, two requests for funding have been received. The first request was initiated by Otuskwan Chapter for a donation of $1000 to Holy Trinity School in Calgary for their “Milk Subsidy Program” The second request, our regular donation in support of the We Can Help Program. A cheque for $1000 was presented at the Grand Master’s Levi on January 1, 2012 The Youth Endowment Fund Investment of over $176,000 has generated interest revenue of approximately $2,400 during the year. Surplus funds available for distribution at 2011 year end was just over $6,000, but funding requests so for this year (2012) are expected to be in excess of $4,500. Donations of over $7,500 to the fund have been received since the last Grand Communication. The Committee thanks the local chapters for their efforts in raising funds to help the Fund grow and we thank the Grand Council for their help in promoting the use of the Fund. As this will be my last report as Chairman of the Committee, I especially thank the other members of the Committee for their opinions and pledge my support to my successor if requested.

Respectfully submitted, R.E.C. Richard Kampjes, Chairman Y.E.F., R.E. Comp. Ken Mingo and V.E. Comp. Bill Sheppard

R.Ex. Comp. Kampjes noted that the generous donations made from the proceeds of M.Ex. Comp. Kopp's pins and from the contributions of the Past Master's (Virtual) Degree conferral that was conducted yesterday afternoon. R.Ex. Comp. Kampjes received a number of cheques from representatives of the chapters.

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON HONOURS AND AWARDS

Most Excellent Grand First Principal, Distinguished East and Companions all. Your Committee on Honours and Awards, having met in Lacombe at the Grand Executive Meeting on February 11th, 2012, are now pleased to announce, from the nominations received, the following Companions have been selected to receive the two awards that are available, that of the Alberta Distinguished Service Award and the General Grand Chapter International Bronze Award. The General Grand Chapter International Bronze Award will be presented to R.Ex. Companion Keith Brennan, a member of Bethel Chapter #36 in Forestburg, AB. I must once again state that each Chapter should urge its members to submit the name of a most deserving companion who has shown outstanding support for his chapter and has been active in his community. Do send their complete and thorough biography to the Grand Scribe E’s office, so that your committee can make a correct and responsible decision on these nominations.

Respectfully submitted, M.Ex. Comp. David Hongisto, P.G.Z., Chairman, R.Ex. Comp. Jack Drebit

REPORT OF THE GRAND LECTURER

To the Most Excellent Companion Kopp and his officers, I was invited on two occasions to present lectures during this past year. I presented a lecture at Alberta Chapter in Calgary. I also did a presentation of Royal Arch Masonry to Granite Lodge in Blackie. This presentation helped to promote Royal Arch Masonry to a Craft lodge. I would encourage the First Principals of the chapters that if they are aware that a meeting may require some Masonic education, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will be more than pleased to present a paper. I would like to thank M.E. Comp. Kopp for his encouragement to the chapters to involve Masonic education in their meetings. Remember, Masonic education is one way to help the members maintain their interest in the Craft in general and Royal Arch Masonry in particular.

Respectfully submitted, M. Ex. Comp. Don Gillies, Grand Lecturer

REPORT OF THE LONG RANGE PLANNING AND MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Report to the Most Excellent Grand First Principal: In the implementation of a plan to assist Chapters which are having difficulties, one need look no farther than the Craft Grand Lodge, in that there already is a plan and a program which has been put in place to assist lodges which are having difficulties surviving. This plan had some success in the northern part of the jurisdiction, but was not promoted to any great degree in the south. I refer to the Doric p0lan, which has been around for about a decade or more. There is little point in trying to reinvent the wheel. The Doric plan has been shown to be successful when the lodge was sufficiently aware of its shortcomings and problems to ask for help. If a chapter is to be assisted, it must by having a program in place, and assisting chapters to evaluate their activities. There are several assumptions on which these recommendations are based:

• The chapters will not accept dictates from Grand Chapter. • As in most other walks of life, the only way a problem gets solved is for those in charge to

recognize there is a problem. This seems to be an obvious fact, but some chapters have reacted very negatively to reports of the Grand District Superintendent that pointed out shortcomings of a chapter.

• Given the above assumptions, the plan must be to acquaint the chapter with what assistance is available to them, and have personnel available to assist when the Chapter asks for it.

Recommendations: The district is the best vehicle for the delivery of the program. In order to be effective the GDS’s must be fully aware of the program and conversant with it. They are the front line. It is no secret which Chapters are having difficulty, as one only has to read past GDS reports. The GDS’s must visit chapters early in their term and make sure the Chapter officers are aware of the services that are available to the Chapters. Grand Chapter has not been good at this. How many 3rd Principals know there is a Grand Lecturer available to assist with their programming? The GDS should, on his first visit, outline facts about Grand Chapter, such as the Youth Endowment Fund and who the Grand Lecturer is. If a program similar to the Doric plan is put in place, the GDS’s should be acquainted with it and carry that information to the chapters, especially those that are having difficulties. A tactful companion who is well skilled in managing a chapter should be appointed in each district to head a district task force to assist chapters who ask for assistance. This companion must be sufficiently conversant with the Doric plan to put it into effect. There is no magical solution to chapters in trouble, but there are solutions. This has been demonstrated many times. It requires changing the modus operandi of the chapter. Only a fool continues with same program and expects a different result. This report is essentially a rehash of last year’s report. I strongly recommend rereading that report. This will be my last report on this subject. There is little to be achieved by me writing reports. I have set out twice now what I believe needs to be done. The ball is the court of the Grand First Principal. I am prepared to assist on any action taken

Respectfully submitted, Jim Lore, PGZ

M.Ex. Comp. J. Lore: Congratulated M.Ex. Comp Fitzsimmons for highlighting many of the ideas expressed in this report when he brought greetings from Saskatchewan.

M.Ex. Comp. J. Kopp: Offered his thanks on behalf of Grand Chapter for the dedication that M.Ex. Comp. Lore has shown and wished him continued improvement in his health. Greetings from the Allied Masonic Degrees of Canada M.Ven. Bro. W. (Bill) Leipert, Sovereign Grand Master, brought greetings on behalf of the Grand Council of the Allied Masonic Degrees of Canada. M.Ven. Bro. Leipert took this opportunity to congratulate the officers of this Grand Chapter for the excellent year that they have had and he wished the officers for 2012-2013 the same success.

REPORT OF THE CENTENNIAL PLANNING COMMITTEE To the M.Ex. Grand First Principal, Officers and Companions of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Alberta: The Centennial Committee is pleased to report that continued but slow progress is being made toward meeting our goals to have a successful Centennial Celebration. The Centennial Historical Book Sub-Committee continues to research the existing historical information available in the archives and libraries.

The Centennial Committee to-date has received no responses from the individual Chapters to our various written requests for Chapter Historical Summaries. A few more Chapters have submitted names of Chapter contacts for Centennial Representative. Based on conversations with the Chapters I can report some Chapters are in fact starting to develop a historical summary for submission. I would like to thank the Grand Chapter Officers and the Grand District Superintendents for their ongoing support in our endeavours to meet our Centennial Goals. We are progressing, however due to the lack of responses we are very quickly loosing our schedule float to meet our commitment of having the Centennial Historical Book completed by May 2014. This is a project that could carry on into the Centennial year, if required. The Funding and Research Sub-Committee is in a position to apply for a Government Grant to carry out a special Centennial Project once the election is complete and the committee, in conjunction with the Grand Chapter Executive, to determine the project to proceed with. This year, thanks to the efforts of R.Ex. Comp. Don Murray, has seen a decisive boost to our fund raising effort and puts us well on our way to being self sufficient and eliminating or at least greatly reducing our dependency on Grand Chapter Funding for the Centennial in 2014.

Respectfully submitted. R.Ex. Comp. Wally Watts Centennial Committee, Chairman

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE GRAND FIRST PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS

To the Companions of the Most Excellent Grand Chapter of Alberta. We have reviewed the Address of M.E.C. Jerry Kopp and join with him in welcoming ALL to this 2012 Annual Convocation of the Grand Chapter of R.A.M.'s of Alberta. We should congratulate M.E.C. Kopp for the professional way in which he managed his time between Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter. His advice to those following him in office, commitment and planning, is something they can take notice of. This showed as he visited each Chapter once and some several times and managed to be at all but one District Meeting, which was unavoidable. We concur with the appointment of “Right Excellent” rank on the four District Superintendants. He was able to take part in the 100 year celebration of Otuskwan Chapter #9 and the Consecration and Dedication of Mountainview Chapter #42. He has acknowledged those who have passed to the ‘Grand Chapter Above” with a solemn ceremony of remembrance last evening. The observations were well founded and should be given some consideration. There was acknowledgement of those who assisted and advised him in the past year. M.E.C. Kopp has had an excellent year and has given good service to this Grand Chapter, we sincerely thank him for his dedication and commitment. Jerry, we look forward to your joining our ranks later this afternoon.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of all Past Grand First Principals, M.Ex. Comp. Donald Russell Greetings from the General Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons International M.Ex. Comp. David L. ADDRESS OF THE GRAND FIRST PRINCIPAL - 2012-13 What two years ago seemed like an eternity away has arrived in the blink of an eye and still does not seem real. First I would like to thank the installation team for doing me the honour of partaking in the ceremony today. I know for every new Grand 1st Principal the members who install him all have a special connection to him but I have had this privilege on numerous occasions with these same gentlemen. When Fort McMurray approached Grand Chapter in 1999 about forming a Chapter most of them held a Grand Chapter office and MEC Lyle Dowdell was the sitting Grand First Principal. In 2000 MEC Dowdell lead the team who consecrated Hangingstone Chapter #40 and Lyle placed me in the Chair of Zerubbabel. Now 12 short years later these same Companions have installed me in the chair of Grand Zerubbabel with all of you, my Companions and Brothers, present to bear witness. So as you can all imagine today has a very special meaning for me on many Masonic and personal levels I would also like to thank MEC Jerry Kopp and his Grand Chapter Officers for all of their dedication, hard work, hours behind the wheel of a car, and most of all the solid platform, and direction given to myself and my officers to continue on what I know will be a very successful year for all Royal Arch Masons of Alberta. Companions of Royal Arch Masonry of Alberta the Masonic year 2012 – 2013 has the making of one fantastic year. With the support and full participation of your Grand Chapter Officers, your Chapter Officers, and your

Chapter members we will take the tools provided to us over the years and use them as is, modify them as required, and were necessary invent new tools to meet the needs of our great fraternity and its members. Our efforts and achievements in the next year will be greatly supported and have been made achievable by the Grand 1st Principals, their officers, and Committees who have come before me and who though their hard work and dedication have laid the ground work and provided the instruments to us so we may take the successes to date and expand on them. Take our challenges and turn them into works of art in progress so they may become our future successes. I will now ask you a simple question. What do the following all have in common? -Chee -Ying and Yang -A high wire act -an iron worker erecting a high rise building -a successful company -a successful Chapter -a happy and fulfilled Companion The answer is simple, they have: -a purpose or goal; -an internal drive or a spark plug to keep all cylinders firing; -an ability to look for success in small increments of continuous improvements; -a spirit that will not let them sit on their laurels and just give up or accept the status quo And most important they have BALANCE. A successful individual or organization can survive short periods of imbalance but must always return to a balanced state to grow, succeed and be happy. Children learn this lesson very quickly at a young age when they first start to stack building blocks. If the blocks are balanced they are happy, content, and strive to build larger and more complex structures. If the blocks are not balanced, the structure falls and the child becomes upset and may eventually quite the task. But if that young child has the internal drive to succeed at their goal and at times with the help and guidance of others they will perceiver and through slow and steady achievements reach their goal one block at a time. As in our organization whether you are talking at the Grand Chapter level or at the Chapter level or even at an individual level we must adopt the same philosophy for success. There is no one magic answer or program for all the issues in every one of our Chapters. Our Masonic leaders before us have begged, borrowed, and developed programs, educational documents, made degree teams available to assist a Chapter in part or in whole to confer our great degrees on those Masons who actively seek for further light. Do not get me wrong, reaching balance in a Chapter or in one’s self is not an easy thing to accomplish and is even harder to maintain. So many of us look at these items designed to assist us and say “But we did exactly what it said to do and it did not work so the program is flawed or no good”. Yet other Chapters took the same program or assistance and had great success so what made the difference? The answer I believe is Balance. If you analyze what the successful Chapter did, in most cases, they reviewed and identified what they needed help with, pulled the pertinent parts from the program or assistance offered and either used them as is or modified them to suit their needs. They balanced the support to the need. If you inundate yourself with too much of a good thing it very quickly becomes the wrong thing and actually becomes detrimental and will aggravate your issues rather than sooth your afflictions. As leaders in this great fraternity we must be willing to openly communicate with our Companions in Chapter and with our Companions in Grand Chapter. We must be able to accept that on our watch things can be out of balance. We must be able and willing to use the resources available to us to correct the issue, by taking advantage of these resources in the most effective manner at our disposal to regain our balance and harmony. All too often we do not use our resources correctly or use the excuse that we have done it this way for thousands of years and we are not going to change now. Well these are sure ways to fail. We must be open to change while maintaining the integrity of our ritual and rites. If you want your attendance numbers to go up, it is simple, employ your workmen in the quarry. If they have a reason to be there, they will come. Use your ritualists to do the difficult or long pieces. Give your new members or those who have difficulties, smaller more easily memorized pieces. Take pieces that can be divided into several segments and assign 3, 4, or even 5 members to accomplish what in the past we have only used one member to accomplish. Does this take a bit more work? Yes it does. But you now have 3, 4, or 5 members very proud because of what they were able to contribute jointly and a 1st Principle even happier because he had 5 additional members in attendance. Use your member who is a social butterfly and one heck of an organizer to assist your social co-coordinator in planning for your special nights or traditional activities. He or they may propose a new twist that will bring life back into an event that only a few members were attending because it was tradition. You must be open to new ideas. If this level of satisfaction is maintained you may find that the word will spread to the local Lodges how great the Chapter is and you may find yourself with a new problem. That problem is to find a manner of balance to accommodate new candidates. It may only be one or two candidates a year but that is much better than one candidate every two or three years. Through the increased participation comes increased education, not only through personnel learning from

38

Page 41: Grand Chapter of Alberta Proceedings 2012€¦ · Princess Alexandria of Kent in the Legislative Assembly Chambers, Legislative Building, Regina, Saskatchewan. Besides sports Jerry

learning and delivering our ritual to the uninformed, but also from the new opinions and interpretations being brought forward along with the innocent questions being raised with the expectation that the Chapter Officers know all. Only to find out that the new opinion or a simple one word question such as WHY leaves the open minded Chapter Officer to realize that there may in fact be a different way to look at something. Though the increased participation and education you may find you have new skill sets available to the Chapter. Do not be afraid to try out and use these new skill sets, whether they be technical, instructional or culinary. I may add a good time to try the culinary skills is when your Grand 1st Principal is coming to visit. As you can see he is not shy around a good festive board and he has not found a festive board he did not appreciate. Yes he is old school and likes egg salad sandwiches. My wife thinks you could send a hundred egg salad sandwiches to a festive board for two Masons and they would all disappear first. If our Chapters have new ideas on how to put technology to use, again without endangering our established Tenants and Principles I would be more than willing to review your thoughts and proposals through our appropriate Grand Chapter Committee(s) to determine if we share your same level of enthusiasm. I cannot guarantee you that all proposals will be greeted with open arms, but if you do not ask you will never know and a new level of balance may never be found. Education, participation, and fellowship can take many forms and one of the favourite methods to a traveler is to wander the roads with a fellow Companion or two or three. My experience on my visitations over the years is that a road trip allows you to find the answer to all Masonic issues, memorize new work with the assistance of a very judgmental but always appreciative audience. But the greatest gain is in the fellowship and everlasting friendships nurtured in that hour or two of traveling with that companion who up until now was just Companion so and so who was at every meeting and did good work. Now he is Companion Bill Smith who has a wife named Jane and three kids and shares a love of sailing, research, motor bikes or what have you. He is now a friend that you would gladly lend a hand to if he was in need and he is a friend, whom you know will come to your aid in a time of need. As you can see, fellowship is much more than a few minutes once or twice a month shared during a meeting or festive board, it is a lifelong commitment to one another not just because you are a Royal Arch Mason but rather because you are friends. This in turn makes if effortless to meet your obligation to one another to maintain the Five Points of Fellowship. Let’s face it, in this fast paced time, who could not use a real friend to share fellowship with at more than just a meeting. I look at these three principals (Education, Participation, and Fellowship) if you put them in a triangle, they form the key elements of Balance. Most people in an organization such as ours will tell you that an analogy of a triangle is not new. Most members will see a triangle where the Chapter members form a base with the Chapter officers forming the body and the Chapter 1st Principal being at the top, or they may see the Alberta Chapters forming the base with the Grand Chapter Officers forming the body and the Grand 1st Principal at the point. But what most people miss seeing in most analogies of triangles is the inverted triangle which is present in every successful organization. That is the triangle that starts with the Chapter First Principal or Grand Chapter First Principal and is built upwards above the first triangle in which the First principal is there to support his Officers who in turn support our Chapter Officers who in turn support the individual Royal Arch Companions. In some cases that support comes in the form of a very simple word of encouragement or recognition. In other times the support can come in the form of very complex and difficult support to enable Balance to be restored. Companions, in closing, I would like to say that the trust you have shown in me, by bestowing me with this honour of being your Grand First Principal is very humbling. I can only promise you that I will work with my Grand Chapter Officers, Committees, and Chapter Officers for the year of 2012-2013 on your behalf, diligently and to the best of our ability. Remember through Education, Participation, and Fellowship we can all maintain Balance. At the door is a copy of my present itinerary, business card, and pin. Please feel free to pick them up at your convenience.

M.Ex. Comp. W. (Wally) J. Watts, Grand First Principal, 2012-2013 Hangingstone Chapter #40 took this opportunity to congratulate M.Ex. Comp. W. Watts by presenting him a hand-crafted gavel and case.
