The Cardiac Department at Bristol Children’s Hospital is a world-classfacility providing life-saving treatment and care for hundreds of childrenevery year. It is a nationally designated centre of excellence for the mostadvanced, pioneering heart surgery for children and provides a vitalservice for children on a local, regional and national scale.

Our Children’s Heart Appeal is raising £1 million to create a new‘Cardiac Hybrid Theatre’ which will revolutionise treatment for youngcardiac patients at Bristol Children’s Hospital. The Hybrid Theatre will bethe first of its kind in the South West of England and will comprise a state

of the art operating suite that will allow a combination of medicalprocedures, from x-rays to open heart surgery, to take place in one theatrespace. The theatre suite will include new pioneering radiology andcatheter equipment, as well as x-ray facilities, enabling increased keyholesurgery, which is a less invasive procedure than open heart surgery.

This new, flexible clinician space, which will be located on level four ofthe Children’s Hospital, means that medical teams can work together ina multi-disciplinary way, to provide the best possible treatment forchildren with heart problems like Jacob and Ellen.

Andrea, mum of Jacob, (pictured) tells us what the Children’sHeart Appeal means to her: “When our son Jacob was aday old he was rushed from our hometown in West Walesto Bristol Children's Hospital due to a rare heart conditionwhere a blood clot blocked one of his main coronaryarteries. Jacob's left ventricle became severely damaged dueto the clot. When he arrived his organs had shut down andhe only had minimal heart function left. We were told hewouldn't survive the next day.

For five long months the team worked around the clock tosave our baby. Their work still continues improving his heart

function which still remains poor. Today, against all odds, Jacob has made it home to be with his big sisterElla as an outpatient. Jacob's future is still unclear, but what I do know is this; without the amazing peopleand resources at this amazing hospital, Jacob would not be here today.”

Please support our Children’s Heart Appeal today to help children like Jacob & Ellen.

“The incredible capabilitiesof the new Cardiac Hybrid

Theatre funded by TheGrand Appeal will mean

that we will be able toperform surgery, often using

a “keyhole” approach, allowing patients treatmentto be quicker, less traumatic

and invasive than open heart surgery.”
