    Foreword

    Born M elbourne. 8 July 1882. died New York, 20 February 1961.Percy

Grainger's life was a virtuoso performance, rich in imagination and

energy, spanning many ands. Pianist and composer, collector, gua rdian

and arranger of folk music and songs, experimentor in forms and

machines for his "free m usic" music not limited by time and pitch

intervalsPercyGrainger decide d atanearlyage hat imitsof ime must

apply neither to music nor man. On 2 May 1909 he wrote that:

Fear of dea th and oss,

    destruction and forgottenness.

spur me to com pose , collect,

    preserve and em balm.

In O cto be r 1955 he recal led how he was im pe l led , " to c ol lect

ma nuscripts, musical sketches, letters, articles, mem entos, portraits,

photograph s, etc. . always with the intention of someday putting this

collection on permanent display in Me lbourne". The Grainger Museum

University of Melbourne, was officially opened in December 1938.

Endow ed by Grainger, through to his periodic contributions on site asa

bricklayer, it was built to house his collection . He and his wife Ella

progressively en larged the collection. It continues to develop acc ord ing

    to his wishes.

Thecollection s not restricted to Grainger. Whereas Grainger's biaswas

"English-speaking a nd Scandina vian", the scene is international and

com prises a vast range of material relating to music, ts com pose rs and

performers: "The sources", said Grainger in 1938, " from which

com pose rs draw their inspiration" .

In July 1974 Dr. Kay Dreyfus comm enced an intensive p rogram me of

    sorting,

listing a nd indexing this rich resource. With generous financial

suppo rt from the M usic Boa rd, Australia Council, and the University of

Melbourne, Dr. Dreyfus and her colleagues haveworked on behalf of he

Grainger Museum Board under the general direction of the University

    Archives Department.

    Introductory Note

Making acatalogu e of heGrainger Museumcollec tion of music by Percy

Ald ridge Grainger was like working on a giant igsaw puzz le.

Grainger had the habit of returning again and aga in to earlier works,

revising hemorrearranging hem ordifferent nstrumental com binations.

Each rewo rking of a compo sition was likely to generate a new score, a

body of sketches and related working materials, and o ften, too, an

accom panying setof parts, since revisions were requently m ade after a

work had been tested in performance. A dde d to this was Grainger's

prac tice of preparing m aterial or hisown use as performer or conductor.

One was con fronted by hund reds of items, and m any different types of

    material.

When work began on the Grainger Museum project, no catalogue of

Grainger's com positions had been published. Thencam e he short istof

works in Thomas C. Slattery's biography Percy Grainger. The Inveterate

Innova tor (Evanston, llinois,1974).More ecentlycameTeresa Balough's

A Complete Catalogue of the Works of Percy Grainger (Music

Mono graphs No. 2,The Department of Music, The University of W estern

Australia, 1975). The latter was an inva luable a id to work in the latter

    stages of this catalog ue.

In addition to the puzzles arising out of Grainger's work methods, one

faced another difficulty resulting rom he act hatnotall he ma nuscripts,

norevenall elated temsofaparticular itleorarrangement, are n heone

    place.

At least ten libraries in add ition to the Grainger Museum have

holdings of Grainger manusc ripts. Morematerial sknown o be n private

hands. Since work bega n on he Grainger Museum collection, he Elder

Library of the University.of Adela ide has allowe d a substantial part of ts

Grainger c ollection to be transferred to the Grainger Museum. This

material is listed in Group 15 below. Since many items in the Ad elaide

collection are ntimately related o tems already n he Grainger Museum,

this group illustrates quite vividly the nature of the p roblem referred to

here. The task of rationalising the wo rld holdings of G rainger material

remains o bedone. The brief or he present catalog ue was o rationalise

the holding's of the Grainger Museum.

Inattempting ocom plete he igsaw -pictureof hematerial

    n

    heGrainger

Museum one was helped greatly by Grainger's prac tice of meticulously

dating his manuscripts. For he most part he entered not only he dateof

composition, orof heparticular arrangem ent, but hedateof he air-copy

    (if hat swhatan tem s)as

    well.

    Thereareexceptions,ofcourse,andone

sometimes finds what appe ars o be he same tem judging by itle and

date alon e being a ttributed to two libraries. But for the m ost part I am

con vince d that if one were able to put all related tems side by s ide and

com pare their dates or com pare m anuscript paper, handwriting and

other evide nce if he dating is am biguous a clear picture of Grainger's

com positiona l outpu t, and of the evolution of particular works , would

    emerge.

Quite often ea ch page of a manuscript is annotated separately with the

day and place of its comp letion. These annotations disappe ar when he

score is engra ved. Astudy of these annotated manuscripts gives nsight

into he ragm ente d natureofGrainger's compositional activities. Muchof

hiscreative work wasdone perforce on he

    road:

    n rains, nhotel oom s,

backstage in the cracks between concert engagem ents.

There is no doub t that Grainger enjoyed wo rking on his music. He

frequently copie d hisown pa rts. He bound hisown scores. In he earlier

    years,

when his com positions were often Birthday or Yule-tide gifts o his

mother, he spent some time on the decoration of the title pages and

covers of his scores. And indeed, he designed the covers for the

    publishededitionsofhismusic.Theamountof imehemusthavespenton

what one might call "clerical w ork" in connection with his music is

    staggering,especiallywhenonesetsagainst t hedemandsofhis ifeasa

    performer.

One diosyncrasy that might be men tioned here s Grainger's practice of

substituting "eng lished " words for the more comm only used m usical

terms an d desc riptions. This app lied not only to expression a nd tem po

markings, but o nstruments andgenres as

    well.

    Hence a trio" becomes

    a 3-some",a quartet" a 4-som e","viola"becomes "m iddle-f iddle" and

"violoncello" becomes "bass fiddle" . More confusingly, an "orchestra"

    sometimes becomes a "b an d" .
