EDITORS’ COMMENT

Welcome all to the June edition of the Grille. The good news, Robyn and I have changed our dates for travelling to TS Armidale for Navy Cadets. We can now attend meetings. If you have anything of interest for the newsletter you could bring it along.

From the photos on page 4 it looks like it was an interesting day at the Alpaca Farm. Nearly as interesting as Ken’s Fishing trip. I am doing a training and assessing course at TAFE in Coffs Harbour and this occupies every Thursday till the end July. No coffee runs for us till August.

I have 2 projects currently on the go. Number 1 is the Wolseley engine repair and this is well underway. Trouble is, while the engine is out why not paint the firewall and tidy the wiring crosses my mind. Why not the front chassis rails also. Perhaps a new set of carburettors. Result, the engine is complete, sitting in front of the car and the engine bay is just starting to be reassembled. I hope to have the vehicle on the road within 6 weeks, ready for its RWC and re-registration. See page 9 for a photo.

My other project is my 1949 Morris Minor Tourer. Most of the panels are now at Littles Speciality Refinishers. When they are ready I will take out the body, for blasting , rust repair and painting. Then there is just the upholstery, suspension, exhaust and brakes. I might have it home by Christmas as a rolling chassis. Anyone else got a project car to talk about, please send me article and photos.

Regards

Peter & Robyn

SPRITE CLUB WEEKEND IN GRAFTON

My husband Ian and I are organising a Grafton weekend for the Sprite Club of Australia (Sydney based) and the Sprite Car Club of Queensland over the June long weekend. A part of which will include a morning tea at the GVMC Club Rooms and an Observation Run starting from the Club rooms Sunday June 11th. We’d like to invite GVMC members to: a) help the GVMC raise a few $ for the Club by providing morning tea for the Spriters and b) come along on our mystery tour. Lunch will be at everyone’s own expense somewhere along the route. We’ll be finishing the day back at the Crown Hotel-Motel car park for pre dinner drinks and nibbles before heading around to Roches for dinner. Wendy Gibbs 0458 427 332

TOURING TARTS II by WENDY GIBBS The MG Spring Rally was held over the weekend of 17th & 18th September 1994. Due to my racing commitments the week before the rally, Esme Sprite didn’t get a look in until the Friday night before the rally.

I had arranged for Avis Fowler to stay the night at our place so we could be at Peats Ridge by 7am on the Saturday morning and still get a good nights sleep. Well, that was the theory. Avis, Avis’ partner, and my hubby Ian worked until 11pm that night preparing the car. (I’m the chief cook and bottle wash).

Avis and I made Peats Ridge in good time and enjoyed the merriment and excitement before the days’ festivities began. In the last rally, I had made stickers for Esme’s bonnet and boot lid – Tarts On Tour and Touring Tarts referring to our up coming Six Hour Relay Race Team. Not to be out done, Mat Hunter and Adam Workman from Triumph Sports Owners had professionally made stickers for their TR7 that read Bastards With Brains. The scene was set, would the Bastards beat the Tarts?

Thankfully, the first turn that we should have made was out of sight of the start. It was reversing back up the Expressway On ramp that the first instruction finally made sense. We successfully proceeded to the first Unmanned Passage Control.

The instruction that had us baffled next was at the Letter A, measure 22.1 at 77 degrees. Which letter A? Do you realize how often the letter A appears on a survey map? Lo and behold there was a location called The Letter A on the map!

For an interesting deviation, we had to complete a motorkhana test at the Produce Markets. Avis being the superior Motorkhana driver, took to the test with mucho gusto. She scores a comparatively good time.

We proceeded with due caution to our lunch break in Beresfield. Lunch was a sausage sizzle at the Hunter Valley MG Workshop. During the break Avis realized that we had been given two maps the same instead of three different maps. The third, we needed for the afternoon caper.

Richard, the Rally Director, returned and gave us the right map but not before we had caused total pandemonium. A little flustered and very late we set off. We had a good idea of where we were going. We did reach the first check point as he was about to pack up. It was the same story at all the check points that afternoon.

Driving into the setting sun on unfamiliar one lane roads was exhilarating. I’m sure Esme felt quite at home driving through Wandin Valley as she is named after Esme Watson from A Country Practice fame – she doesn’t look much but she’s got a good heart. When the road widened a little we picked up more speed – Avis didn’t think it was possible.

At one stage we pulled over to check our position. To our surprise, a Mini Clubman came to a screeching halt in front of us. We were ready for a quick escape just in case, but the guy has a Sprite at one stage and couldn’t believe how well Esme was running. I explained that she had a Cooper S engine and was met with that “Oh yeah, I bet!” look we girls come to expect. I refrained from adding “Look buster, I know it’s a Cooper S because my hubby said so!”

We arrived at the Charbonnier Motel in Singleton, with plenty of time for showering before dinner – a nice change. Dinner was at the RSL Club where they served a tasty smorgasbord. We were advised that the days’ results would be in the motel foyer. It was impossible to describe our wonderment when we appeared in 4th place. Had we finally cracked this rally business?!

We had to be back at the RSL by 8am on Sunday for a Funkhana. Richard the Devious as he had become known, had set up some witches hats for us to drive between while placing paper cups on top of each one. With great hilarity the Bastards went first. The rules were simple, passengers side first, then the drivers side around the course. The fun continued with different interpretations of the rules being applied. The best was by the crew of the MK4 Jag. They tied the rear doors open so the passenger could sit in the back and slide across to deposit the cups on the cones.

At the drivers briefing we were given the hint that we would probably not believe that we could go where we were about to enter and there would be uniforms involved. Singleton has an army base so off 18 cars went in search of the first check point. It was really quite amusing at first, passing other entrants going in all different directions. Then we realized that there were only 3 crews now driving around the base in search of the check point. What did everyone else find that had slipped our attention?

TOURING TARTS II CONTINUED Motoring along, Avis called excitedly STOP!. Skidding to halt, she was yelling Back Up Back UP!!! I was getting quite good at this by now. There was a Army You Are Here sign. We had assumed that we weren’t allowed onto the base proper. But no, the organizers must have had the Tarts in mind, as they had us driving in and out of the barracks with all these nice young men in uniforms checking us out with their “big guns”. Success, we were only the fifth car to find the check pint and the third to come in from the right direction.

With our confidence bolstered, we found all the check points and Unmanned Passage Controls until the dreaded map trace. With a map trace, you are given a squiggly line and that represents the correct route tto take. However, the line may not be to scale and/or mirror reversed. We thought we had it.

Part way along our chosen route we passed a Triumph going the other way. Our confidence wained. I pulled over so Avis could check the map and I could find a bush. No, we definitely had it right. So on we plundered.

We did find the next check point, but we had missed on Unmanned Passage Control somewhere up near Dungog. The Bastards caught up to us at this point and made derogatory comments on our competency (all in fun). We were to discover later that they too had made a major blunder. Ha!

The final section of the rally was what you would expect from seasoned campaigners. Avis’ instructions flowed as we drove around the back blocks. Everything at last was falling into place. We had made just a few wrong turns so our mileage didn’t correspond with those on the route instructions. We soon caught up though, there was a Caution Dip!! At a certain mileage. As we came out of otherside with a WHOOSH we knew what our mileage should have been.

We returned to Hunter Valley MG Workshop for lunch arounf 2.30. We were fed a scrummy steak sandwich and a lot of twaddle from the other competitors. The post moretum is just as much fun as the hype before the start.

PS Yes, the Tarts did beat the Bastards. To this day, when we bump into the lads around the race tracks and rally pits we fondly call each other Old Bastards and Old Tarts – I guess you just had to be there! J

ENGINE BAY CLEAN UP

This is a photo of my Wolseley 4/44. I have had the engine rebuilt by Waggott Cams of Alstonville. While it was out I decided to clean up the firewall and paint it the same colour as the vehicle. This is a big job as everything has to be removed. While I was at it the chassis rails looked in need of some attention, so onto them as well.

Robyn has commented that no one ever looks under the bonnet anyway and it is not a concourse quality car, so why both-er? (At this stage I think that that was a fair comment).

Anyway the vehicle is slowly going back together. Talk about a money pit, only vintage boats could consume more time and capital.

Please send me photos of your projects otherwise I will continue to publish mine.

Politically Incorrect British Humour!!!

A man in a hot air balloon is lost over Ireland. He looks down and sees a farmer in the fields and shouts to him. “Where am I?” The Irish farmer looks up and shouts. “You can’t fool me, you’re in that basket up there”. I had a trivia competition in the bag until the very last question, which I got wrong. The question was “Where do women have the curliest hair?” Apparently the correct answer was Fiji.
