Grafenwoehr. ”happy birth-day america!“ was themotto onJuly 4th at main post Grafen-woehr.Theusarmy had issuedan invitation and German andamerican guests celebrated theindependence of theunited sta-tes,which was declared in 1776,together on the parade fieldbelow the water tower. Gar-rison commander col. Jamese. saenz welcomed many ViPguests on independence Day.

Many visitors came in throughGate 1 to celebrate with theAmericans, following a shortstroll around theWaterTower.Thesoldiers and families had alreadytaken control of the paradefield, which is usually used formilitary events, in the afternoonand turned it into a lar-ge picnic area. National pri-de and patriotism inspiredby America’s independence wasnot only displayed by the hugeStar-Spangled-Banner and Ger-man national flag waving onthe flag poles in front of JMTCheadquarters but also by themany small flags, shirts and hatsfeaturing the Stars and Stripes.

Country singer Kayleigh Leithfrom Pennsylvania put a sen-se of home on the stage in thetentwith herNewCountry-songs.Together with her Dutch violi-nist, she walked around the paradefield with her guitar andentertained the visitors. Mean-while a DJ had taken control ofthe music in the tent. Face pain-ting for kids and the magic ofthe Sorcerer from Hexenbergas well as many jumping cast-les and play areas providedentertainment for the youngestfest guests. Long lines formed infront of the booths where ham-burgers, hot dogs, t-bone steaks, beverages and Budweiser beerwere sold.

Charlie Hacker provided acontrast program to the Ame-rican light beer. Together withMayor Helmuth Wächter, hepulled a handcart with a fresh kegof Kulmbach beer into the VIParea and presented Col. JamesE. Saenz, Col. Bryan L. Ruda-cille and Command SergeantsMajor William Berrios andDennis Zavodsky with their “O-Zapft-is“-keg tapping certificateswhich they had earned in May.The VIP visitors enjoyed thefreshly drafted Bavarian beerwith their hamburgers andhot dogs very much. To-gether, they proposed a toast tothe Independence Day and tothe German-American friend-ship. Among the guests werethe mayors of the towns bor-dering the training area suchas Hans-Martin Schertl fromVilseck and Lord Mayor KurtSeggewiß fromWeiden,CountyCommissioner Richard Reisingerfrom Amberg and Police Pre-sident Rudolf Kraus from Re-gensburg, the new local German

Army commander, Lt.Col.HansGehrlein as well as many othermilitary representatives from thevarious US units.

The highlight, eagerly awaitedby all, was the brilliant fireworksdisplay. Loud fire crackers, like you normally only hear co-

ming from the ranges, openedthe light show. The pyrotech-nical art could not only beseen and heard on the paradefield but also from around theentire town. It was accompaniedby a loud rendition of “Proudto be an American“, put onby the DJ.

LocaL newSRay ofHope:Musicwas their first love

Story bysusannewilliams

A band that fascinates their audience from the first to the last moment of every concert. Photo: SusanneWilliams

the band “ray of hope” is anincredibly good group of tenyoung singers and musiciansthat was founded in 2004.basically they all just wan-ted to keep on singing afterthey got out of high school ineschenbach where they hadbeen part of the school choir.so, they met every weekend toplay music and sing together.

After a while they started tosing in churches for weddings.Of course they were familiarwith church songs and hymnsjust like they could play musicalsongs and rock and pop.Thingsgot more and more professionaland a few years later they star-ted to give annual Christmasand summer concerts wherethey fascinated crowds of atleast 300 people.

They can play anything fromGerman pop songs to amazingclassics like Michael Jackson’s“Heal the World” or John Mi-les’ “Music was my first Love”.They really rock the stage whenthey perform hits like the Bea-tles’ “Here comes the Sun” orAdele’s “Someone like You”.

No wonder the audience wantsmore after each concert. Andsince the concert in Grafen-woehr at the “Kastenhaus” wassuch a great success in June Rayof Hope is going to play ano-ther concert like that in Octo-ber in Kemnath at the Foyer ofthe Mehrzweckhalle.

For more information checkout their homepage on www.rayofhope-band.de or findthem on facebook under “Rayof Hope.” You could also hearand see them on Youtube if youtype in “RayOfHopeBand”,Check them out: You will lovewhat you hear!

In a station wagon, the loadshould be secured with a netor a grate above the rearseatback. Sharp and pointeditems can turn into dangerousflying objects even during mi-nor crashes and should not beplaced on the rear window orother shelves. Lose objects arebest stored in the trunk, or onthe floor.

it was a nice sunny day at theVfw home in Grafenwoehrwhen i met one of the mostimpressive and adorable perso-nalities ever. They had told methat their mascot and his ownerwould come to visit the Vfwmembers that day and i expecteda normal dog just like any otheri have met before. but man, iwas so wrong!

When I entered the back yard ofthe VFW home I saw him lyingright beside his owner’s feet: Abeautiful dark German Shepardthat had aged from everything hehad gone through but that stillwas willing to do his job and toprotect his owner no matter what.I had never met a retired milita-ry dog before and the aura thatsurrounded him was so majestic. It is hard to describe this dog.Of course, for me as an absolutedog lover it is clear that I adoreeach and every dog. But this oneis so special. He was wearing hisharness and his owner told methat they put it on every morningbecause it belongs to the dog’sdaily routine. With the harnesson he would go on patrol in theyard before breakfast. “You know,”his owner said, “that’s what he hasbeen doing all his life.”Yes, he wastrained to patrol, to obey and todefend himself and his handlers. He had learned not to doubt thecommands he got. And why dodogs things like that? Not becausethey believe in fighting. Simplybecause they truly and withoutconditions love their owners andhandlers.

As every military working dogthis one was chosen from a Eu-ropean kennel and taken to theUSA as a puppy to be trainedand to learn that he can trusthis handlers. He learned to pro-tect his handler and his base, tojump out of helicopters and tosniff bombs. And what was his

reward? Playing with his handlerfor a few minutes, with the personhe would give his life for becausehe loves him so much. And thenit was their time to go to wartogether, two companions thatwould stick together no matterwhat might happen to them.Butone day the dog got kidnappedtogether with to other dogs thatdid not make it.He was probablykept under horrible conditions forseveral days before he was able tofree himself and drag himself backto his army base badly injuredbecause his back was broken twiceand blood in his face from thekidnapper he had killed before hecould escape. So, the poor animalwas flown back to Grafenwoehrto get surgery at the animal clinicbut it was obvious that he was notable to work again as a militarydog. Fortunately the Army has aprogram that makes it possiblefor such dogs to be adopted andretire in a cozy home with lovingowners just like they deserve it.The post commander’s wife hadheard of this dog and did her bestto find someone who could takecare of this dog with his fracturedback and his wounded soul. Shefound someone who has had a dog

with a broken back before andwho was willing to give this fourlegged hero a loving home.Thisperson had everything the dogneeded: an incredibly big heart, patience and faith, a nice homewhere the dog could recover anda big yard where he could go onpatrols and do what he had al-ways been doing. It took the dog awhile but he has finally recoveredand is now even able to jump intothe trunk of his owner’s car again.

He will always be a soldier thoughjust like his human colleaguesand when he hears a helicopterhe looks up and wonders if theyare coming to get him for work.He has learned to kill if it wasnecessary but as I knelt down totalk to him and show him howmuch respect I felt for him andhis fellow military dogs he cameover and kissed my nose. What amagic moment.

Grafenwoehr. The duckfamily was quite surprised whenthey all of a sudden sawmany two-legged individuals in sow troughon the city pond on saturday. buttheygenerously left theirusual ter-rain and followed the spectacularevent from the sidelines. after all, onedoesnotget to seea sowtroughrace every day.The opening eventof the 51st fisherfest on saturdayhad been well-organized again bythe fishing club. Before announcer Reinhold Müllerstarted and also provided some his-toric details, fishing club chairmanHerbert Benkhardt hadwelcomed itsguests in the afternoon and thankedall helpers. “Before the fishing clubheld its fest at the city pond, it washeld at theGrafenwoehr pool,Fish-Gradl and the Opel-Pond,” saidMüller. Ten teams with very ima-ginative names competed. But thatwasn’t enough: Oliver Müller andRené Wächter appeared in rabbitcostumes. After exciting fights, cheered onby the spectators, it turned into awet and funny event for all. Manya competitor took a bath in the citypond.Although mostly involuntary,it turned into a fun experience dueto the tropic temperatures.Winnersin only 1.01 minutes were MarkusStümpfl andMaximilianDippl whoshould definitely change their teamname. They had called themselves“Won’t an can’t do it.“ But that mayhave just been a tactical ploy.Secondwas the “German-American-Friendship“ team with Col. BryanRudacille andUdoGreim.Thirdwere“TheLions“Michael and Patrik Kö-

nig.Other competitors were the “AmiBoys“TimyLeiato andChris Lamp,“TheHüttenKirwaBoys”MikeyKo-lek andThomasRahn,“Silver Surfer“BenjaminKönig andWolfgang Flor,“Pink Rabbits“ Oliver Müller andRenéWächter, “Team Prost“ Com-mand Sgt. Major William Berriosand Capt.Thomas Terpening, “TheGlorious 2“ StefanWeiß andWilbertKraus, and “Midgets with Paddles“Robert Price and Anthony Bair.

On Sunday, the fisher king and tro-phy winners were presented withtheir awards. Apart from the fest’spatrons, Mayor Helmuth Wächterand Deputy Garrison CommanderKathy Aydt, many VIP guests fromGrafenwöhr and the training areahad come. The clubwas prepared forinclement weather and had put upa large fest tent so the guests couldenjoy the fest despite the rain. This year’s fisher queen is Sabi-

ne Rahn. Her carp, caught in theSpindelweiher pond near Hüttenweighed 5,780 grams. She receivedthe historic fisher king chain frompatron Kathy Aydt and you couldsee how proud she was of her ac-complishments.Once again this year,Dominik Stepka won the title youthfisher king. His carp weighed 3,760grams.Hewon the title for the thirdtime in a row, defending his titlesfrom 2010 and 2011.

a family pool for young and oldwith the possibility to spendsome quiet time and relaxati-on, that is how you can describethe outdoor pool inwindische-schenbach.Due to its well-kept,clearly laid-out and generousoutdoor area, each age groupcan quickly find its very ownspecial place. Mom and Dadcan enjoy swimming withoutbeing stressed and afraid thatthe kidsmay get lost somewhere.“The facility is laid out very wellandwell-planned,” says amotherwho, for the first time, gets toenjoy a day at the pool withoutsuffering fromhigh blood pres-sure. “i’ve always returned to-tally stressed fromother pools,”she adds.kudos also go tohorstlindern andwerner konzwhoopen the clean facility with itsimpeccable water quality andwater temperature every mor-ning for the guests.

The facility isn’t the newestbut a very active booster clubensures that the outdoor pool iscontinuously being modernizedand up to date. The booster club, founded in 2003 by 17 members, did everything to ensure thepool was not closed duringthose difficult economic times.Quickly, the club attracted newmembers whose membershipfees help to keep the pool openand attractive. First, a new absor-ber unit was bought at a cost of65,000 Euro. It heats the waterwith solar energy. Thus, enormousheating costs were reduced in anenvironmentally friendly way.Forthat effort, the booster club wasawarded the county’s environ-mental award.

An advertisement wall in thepool where companies can placetheir logos for a small rental feeturned out to be a huge success.A thank you goes to all mem-bers, sponsors, donors and thecity of Windischeschenbach

who have supported the clubthroughout the years. All fundsthat were raised over the pastyears through membership fees, donations, events such as Zo-igl beer weekends, sponsoredswimming events, beach parties,“Rock at the Tower,“ participa-tion in the Christmas marketetc. were fully invested into thepool. Playground equipment forlittle kids, a basketball hoop, various sun sails, new granitebenches, a soccer goal and manyother small pieces of equipmentwere bought. This year, the club and the citybought two mobile block hea-ting stations that help to heatthe pool in the summer and thetown hall in the winter while ge-nerating power. For that purpose, the booster club donated 25,000Euro to the city for the use of theheating stations at the pool.Thatway, the club has already investedmore than 100,000 Euro into theleisure facility.

On July 29, starting at 2 p.m.,the club hosts a wellness day

that features relaxation andrecuperation. There will alsobe numerous events for thekids. Visit us and let us surpriseyou.Proceeds will be used for thenext project, most likely a beachvolleyball field.
