These days, successful high school students rarely go home when the final bell rings. There are sports commitments, class leader-ship projects and the kinds of community service work that has set this generation apart.

Students on the Coastside are no exception.As we have the past few years, the Review profiled several of the most

outstanding graduating seniors at Pescadero and Half Moon Bay high

schools. There is nothing scientific about the exercise; it is merely an op-portunity to highlight the achievements and plans of a few talented stu-dents who are emblematic of their larger classes.

On a personal note, this is one of the few stories each year that I simply refuse to delegate. It is wonderful to spend some time with teenagers who are pointed in the right direction. The privilege is all mine.

AnnA-LesA sukkestAd

Career in nursing awaits top studentValedictorian’s plans include Navy

Anna-Lesa Sukkestad is at the top of her class with dreams to match. Pescadero High School’s

valedictorian is headed to college in the fall and plans to serve her country as a nurse in the U.S. Navy.

She said she has want-ed to be a nurse for some

time. She has an interest in medi-cal science and currently works for a charity called “Pennies for Patients” that helps fund research into child-hood leukemia. When she visited

with a Review reporter, Sukkestad was wearing a red sweater with the words “Cancer Sucks” emblazoned across the front. She chose Norwich University in Vermont because, first and foremost, it offers a world-class nursing education.

The idea of enlisting in the Navy is a relatively new development.

“I originally applied to the school because it has one of the top nursing

schools in the country,” she said. “I saw the military as a great opportuni-ty because of the scholarship I could get, but also because of the life expe-rience.”

Sukkestad shouldn’t have any trou-ble keeping up with her studies at Norwich. She has proven she can jug-gle a host of responsibilities. She has played nearly every sport offered at Pescadero, including softball and soc-

cer at the same time.Like many of her classmates, she

credits the unique atmosphere at Pes-cadero for her success.

“Definitely. The teachers here really care about how well their students do in the class and in life in general,” she said. “They definitely work one-on-one with the students, and I don’t think I would have had as much of that at an-other high school.

“My peers here are not judgmen-tal at all. And pretty much everyone is friends,” she said. “We all respect each other.”

Is she sad to be leaving the Coastside after a lifetime among friends?

“I’m too excited to have time to be sad,” she said. “It’s another big step in my future, and I’m ready to take on all the challenges.”

Spencer White is going away to college after his graduation from Half Moon Bay High School, but he’s bringing a little bit of home

along with him in the form of twin brother Carter.The White brothers are going to the Universi-

ty of California, Los Angeles — Spen-cer to study political science with an eye toward a career in law and Carter on a pre-medical school track.

“I’ve roomed with him for 18 years, so it’s going to be more of the same,” he said. “We both really like it, so I wouldn’t see why not.”

The Whites were known as fine athletes in high school, having played water polo, basketball and

participated on the swim team. Spencer says he doesn’t plan on competing at the collegiate level. He plans to concentrate on his studies. He says UCLA sold itself.

“First of all, it’s in California, and it’s not too far away from home. It’s a prestigious school, it’s well-known, I feel like I can get a good education there, and I visited the campus and absolutely loved it.”

White has mostly received A’s in high school. He has been chosen as the boys Cougar of the Year. Still, he says he wishes he had gotten serious even earlier than he did. His advice to incoming fresh-men?

“I would say, come in ready, right off the bat, no

messing around at all,” he said. “It’s setting a prec-edent.”

White says grades are important to him. He knows potential schools and employers are watch-ing.

“If you have fantastic grades, almost nobody is going to say no to you,” he said. “It’s about keep-ing your doors open.”

He will follow those doors wherever they lead, including back home, if that is what fate has in store.

“You know what, that isn’t even on my radar right now,” he said. “If it works out that way, then why not?”

Andrew Turner is both a big man on cam-pus and a man of few words. Senior class treasurer and a member of Pescadero High

School’s playoff-caliber baseball team, Turner is not one to brag about his accomplish-ments.

When told he should be proud that school officials chose him to be highlight-ed as an exemplary student, he answered simply, “Yep.”

Turner pulled down a 3.56 grade-point average

in his senior year. He plans to take the things he has learned to California State Polytechnic Univer-sity, Pomona, in the fall. He will study chemical engineering.

“I got out of chemistry class and I thought, I love chemistry, but I had my heart set on engineering from a young age,” he said.

Where will his studies lead him?“That’s a good question,” he said. “I don’t know.”Turner grew up in La Honda and has a broth-

er, Matt, who is a freshman at Pescadero. He

says the supportive, small-town environment at Pescadero was key to his success.

“There’s not a lot of people here,” he said, as he surveyed the open field in front of his school on a sunny afternoon. “That leaves more opportunities for a person. I’ve been able to play sports — both baseball and basket-ball. I’ve been (student government) treasur-er. I’ve been in drama. I’ve been able to work a lot of programs that I might not be able to at another school.”

Jessica Lahane credits years on the sports fields of Half Moon Bay for her success in school.

“I’ve been through all the athletic programs at Cunha (Intermediate School) and Half Moon Bay,” she said. For the record, that includes volleyball, basketball and softball.

“I’m busy all year-round. I think it is the key to being successful,” she said, “be-cause you are always doing something, and you are always motivated. I’m driven and determined to surpass a goal.”

Lahane, who is this year’s girls Cougar of the Year, will take that determination with her when she goes to college in the fall – and Lahane is going away in more ways than one, all the way to the University of Mississippi.

“I just wanted something completely different from California,” she said. “Ultimately, in the end, it was kind of the more risky path. I thought, why not? It’s college.”

Lahane would like to walk on to the Mississippi softball team. She would miss competitive sports.

“I know my whole life I’ll be involved in some kind of sports,” she said. “I get bored really easy, so I would get crazy if I wasn’t doing something.”

Lahane will major in accounting in Mississippi.“I enjoy math. It comes easily to me,” she said. Lahane credits her teacher Amy

Treanor with pushing her to greater mathematical heights. “She doesn’t give us the easiest problems.”

Looking back, Lahane doesn’t have many regrets about her high school experi-ence. She does wish she had started the college process earlier, adding that she didn’t take the SAT college admissions test until the end of her junior year. If she were to make a suggestion to new high school students it would be to stay posi-tive and true to yourself.

“A lot of my friends around me have problems (with peer pressure),” she said. “It’s hard, as a friend, because you can see it breaking them down.”

Lahane is very excited about the next chapter in her life, but there are things about her lifetime Coastside home she will miss.

“I will definitely miss the water,” she said. “Whenever I go anywhere, I always like to get home to the fresh air. I know that sounds weird, but it’s my home.”

Resendiz travels from comfort zoneHeads to New York to study engineering

Jose Resendiz describes himself as “a part-time cow-boy.” That may be true, but he is developing grand plans well beyond the South Coast cattle ranch

where he works after school.Resendiz is the Pescadero High School salutatori-

an. He is headed to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., in the fall to study mechanical engineering. And he has been thinking about his future.

“Well, I want an internship in my sophomore year, so I probably won’t get back here but a couple times a year — for

Christmas and some other occasion,” he said.He says he found a career path when he ex-

celled in math at Pescadero.“And I went on to mechanical things,” he said.

“I like cars. I like the physics of how things work.”Resendiz speaks lovingly of the small coastal

town that has always been home, a place that loved him right back. But he also recognizes the perils of growing up in a place like Pescadero.

“You definitely get comfortable here,” he said. “It’s good that you are comfortable, but you need to be exposed to dif-ferent things. I try to take any opportunity I can get to try new things, things I wouldn’t do here.

“I know I need to get out of my comfort zone,” he said.

Resendiz thinks things would have been different had he gone to a larger school. He appreciates the per-sonal attention he’s gotten and isn’t sure that would have happened elsewhere.

“I definitely would have gotten lost with all the stu-dents. I don’t think teachers would have noticed me.”

Resendiz is hoping to spend his remaining weeks in Pescadero with South Coast friends and family that mean so much to him.

“They are definitely all family,” he said.

Other people watch television to relax or kill some time, but Liliana Valencia saw a career on the screen before her on shows like the

popular CSI series.“Watching shows on TV, I thought I want to do

that,” she said. “I try to solve the crimes while the show is going on.”

Soon, Valencia will be headed to Sky-line College to study criminal justice. She wants to be a police officer or a crime scene investigator. She brings a formi-dable background in organizational skills she has learned as a member of the Lead-

ership class at Half Moon Bay High School.“I was not really involved before, but junior year is

when it all started. I joined Leadership,” she said of the group that helps to plan many school events. She is now senior class president and was Homecoming chair. She is also recognized this year with the Cou-gar Spirit Award.

“It was hard at times, trying to do everything, but it’s worth it,” she said.

In addition to Leadership, Valencia said participa-tion in Future Farmers of America helped her with public speaking and getting beyond her shyness. She had public speaking responsibilities with the agricul-tural club as a freshman and learned quickly there was nothing to be afraid of. Now, her younger broth-er is watching — and learning.

“He’ll wear my FFA jacket and ask where I’m al-

ways going,” she said.Valencia has taken full advantage of high

school’s extracurricular life. She says she par-ticularly enjoyed going to football and basketball games. She recommends new students at the high school get involved.

These days, Valencia even lets her feelings be known at the school’s highest levels. In May, she spoke passionately before the Cabrillo Unified School District board, arguing that the high school needed to keep all three counselors despite ongoing funding challenges.

“I basically told them that two of our counselors can barely handle me, so I don’t think one counselor can handle a thousand students,” she said.

Galle got support while recoveringHMB athlete hurt back prior to junior year

Maggie Galle always displayed the potential to be a great athlete.

From cross-country to soccer to track and field, Galle was very good in all three sports.

Based on what happened in her sophomore year, she was on her way to having a strong junior year in those sports and a better year by the time her senior year concluded.

The fact that she is the Half Moon Bay High School Co-Girls Athlete of the Year shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. However, considering she hurt her lower back, after being involved in a car accident a few weeks prior to her junior year, the honor demonstrates how far she came back.

In the last two years, she hardly ran for the cross-country team because of the back pain. But she was still a part of the team and one of the team’s co-captains this season.

Meanwhile, she made her mark in the other sports. She was a first-team all-league player in soccer and won the Peninsula Athletic League high jump title.

Through those tough times of seeing the chiroprac-tor and acupuncturist almost more than her teammates in practice, Galle got support from her friends, family and track and cross-country coach Paul Farnsworth.

“After races, I would let myself get defeated easily, and he would tell me to keep my head up,” Galle said about Farn-sworth. “He’s been one of the best coaches I had in any sport.”

Her parents provided her with constant support.“My mom believed in me more than anyone,” Galle said.

“My dad really cares about doing everything he can to help me.”

HONORABLE MENTIONS: It’s always a challenge to pick the

Half Moon Bay High School Athletes of the Year.

There were several quality athletes who were all good enough to be consid-ered. Here’s that list.

BoysWes Walters, football: A standout

running back, Walters made his big-gest contributions on defense. He twice knocked down fourth-down passes to preserve 1-point wins for the Cougars. Half Moon Bay won the Peninsula Ath-letic League Ocean Division title with a 5-0 record. He was the Ocean Divi-sion’s Offensive Player of the Year.

Carter and Spencer White, water polo and basketball: Both were all-league se-lections for the water polo team as they paced the Cougars at both ends of the pool. They both played key roles in the basketball team’s deep playoff run.

Andy Simanek, basketball and golf: Simanek was a fierce rebounder for the basketball team. He was named to sev-eral all-tournament teams.

GirlsJessica Lehane, volleyball, basket-

ball, softball: An all-league athlete in two sports, Lehane brought lots of en-ergy and excitement to the teams. She recorded lots of key hits for the softball team as it qualified for the playoffs.

Miranda Reimche, volleyball, basket-ball: Using her height to her advantage, she was a solid outside hitter and good low post player.

Lacey Nelson, gymnastics: Though the floor exercise requires the same sort of concentration as the vault, beam and bars, Nelson showed a pure joy and love for tumbling while doing her floor routines.

peranich successful in volleyball, trackHMB grad key player on championship team

The moment Danielle Peranich wound up her arm and prepared to hit a cross-court shot, there was in-timidation felt on the other side of the court.

Peranich was as fierce a hitter as there could be.There was a time when Peranich was the intimidated one. It was the first time she stepped on a volleyball

court.She attended a volleyball camp as a first-grader. She was in a gym at Stanford University with lots of other

girls her age. She got support from the Stanford players working the camp.“They were very nice,” Peranich said. “The players made us feel at ease.”It also helped that she comes from a family of volleyball players. Add track and field to the resume and one

has the makings of a very good athlete.Peranich is a very good athlete. She was a first-team all-league selection for volleyball a year after helping the

Cougars win the league co-title and qualify for the playoffs. She shared the league player-of-the-year honors.After taking a year off from track, Peranich returned and finished second at the Peninsula Athletic League

championships in both the long and triple jump.She’s the co-Half Moon Bay High School Girls Athlete of the Year.Peranich took up track and field when she attended Sea Crest School. “My mom told me it was a good cross-training sport for volleyball,” Peranich said. She stuck with both volleyball and track at Half Moon Bay. She had participated in the high jump at Cunha,

but at Half Moon Bay she took up the long and triple jump. She won her first triple jump, though she didn’t have much practice. Frank Lima taught her the triple jump a few minutes before the competition.

Now, the high school athletic career is over. It’s especially hard to leave volleyball after putting lots of years into the sport.

“I do miss it,” Peranich said. “I did get to experience my senior year to its fullest.”

Martin loves relay racesHMB athlete won PAL titles

Mitch Martin is more than a very talented runner.Thanks to his ability and desire, he owns sev-

eral Peninsula Athletic League titles, including last fall’s PAL cross-country championship. He was second in the 1,600 and 800 meters at this year’s PAL Track and Field Championships. He trailed Woodside’s Chris Wasch-ura in those races. Waschura, a talented runner in his own right, will take his ability to Stanford University.

Not to be outdone, Martin recently decided on attending Cornell University, to study biology while running on the track team.

Martin also ran a leg on the 4x400 relay team that fin-ished second at the PAL Championships and qualified for CCS.

For all those efforts, he is the Half Moon Bay Boys Ath-lete of the Year.

Martin was one of the top runners in the PAL since first stepping on the Half Moon Bay High School campus. He qualified for the Central Coast Section track and field championships the last three years. He was the league’s 3,200-meter champion his sophomore year.

His greatest joy is running on a relay team.But being a long distance runner limits the amount of

times he can run in a relay. Early in the season, Half Moon Bay participates in meets where distance medley relays are held. Those races are not contested at dual meets and at the league championships or beyond. But, 4x400 relays close out duals and league championships.

This year, coach Paul Farnsworth formed a 4x400 relay team, much to the delight of Martin.

“Relays are the best,” Martin said. “That’s when you get to deal with your teammates.”

Martin’s best memory occurred two years ago at the Eas-ter Relays in Santa Barbara, where he anchored two win-ning relay teams. During the course of the day, Martin and his relay teammates met former world champion Maurice Greene.

pisani, Calvillo share honorPescadero juniors play all three sports

Isabella Pisani planned to either share the Pescadero High School Girl Athlete of the Year honor with Lorena Calvillo

or give her fellow junior the honor. She didn’t want the honor by herself.“She works harder than anyone else,”

Pisani said. “She has a big passion for sports.”

Pisani was quite relieved to learn she and

Calvillo were named co-Girls Athletes of the Year.

“She has worked very hard to get that good,” Pisani said. “It’s also fun to play with her.”

It was hard to separate the two. Both played all three sports for the Vikings this year. Both juniors received plenty of kudos to get the honor. Most importantly, both have a great time playing sports.

“I didn’t think I would get this,” Calvillo said. “I just love playing basketball. That is my favorite sport.”

She is so committed to the sport that she made plenty of phone calls to Pescadero graduates to get them to play in the alumni game.

She was named Most Improved Player for basketball.

Pisani, whose favorite sport is volleyball, earned the Coaches Award for both basket-ball and volleyball.

With their versatility, both can play many positions for all three teams.

“I am looking forward to next year,” Calvillo said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Connor White presented Casey Norton with the type of problem that every coach of every high school sport would love to have.

Norton, the basketball coach at Pescadero High School, presented White with a challenge. Within a few days, if that many, White surmounted the challenge, forcing Norton to present White with another challenge.

Norton was up to the task, enjoying White reaching one goal after another.“He was our fastest learner, constantly getting better and better,” Norton said.White was that way in the other sports as well, challenging the coaches to make him better.White earned the ultimate honor, being named the Pescadero High School Boys Athlete of the Year.The greatest challenge White faced was moving from center to point guard. White, instead of wait-

ing for a pass from the top of the key, brought the ball, harassed by every defender.“That’s the most demanding position mentally,” Norton said. “Connor controlled his emotions and

played hard all the time.”A key member of the soccer and baseball teams as well, White, a junior, went out for the basketball

team with one year of experience.He was never afraid of the challenges presented to him from Norton.Now, he is getting ready for his senior year.“Senior year in sports is always the best,” White said.
