OFFICE OF GRADUATE STUDIES

Overview

AsaunitoftheDivisionofAcademicAffairs,theOfficeofGraduateStudiesprovidesleadershipandservicetopromotegraduatestudiesandtoprovideresearchdevelopmentsupportservicestotheuniversitycommunity.Specialattentionisgiventointerdisciplinaryeffortsthatcancontributetoleadershipinachangingworld.

TheOfficeofGraduateStudiesoffersfundingopportunities,hostsNewGraduateStudentOrientation,overseesthethesisanddissertationsubmissionprocess,andishometotheGraduateResourceCenter.

TheOfficeofGraduateStudiesislocatedintheGraduateResourceCenter,inthenorthwingoftheJFKMemorialLibrary(LIBNA124).

FundingOpportunities

TheOfficeofGraduateStudiesoverseesand/orassistsstudentswithseveralStudentSupportPrograms:

GraduateEquityFellowshipProgram

Thesegrantsaredesignedtoincreasethenumberofmaster’sdegreesawardedtoeconomicallydisadvantagedCSUstudents,especiallythosegraduatestudentsthatareunderrepresentedamonggraduatedegreerecipientsintheirdisciplineandtothosewhoaredisabled.

InternationalGraduateStudentTuitionWaiverProgram

Alimitednumberofnon-residenttuitionfeewaiversortuitionfeereductionsmaybegrantedtonon-residentgraduatestudentswhoareeitherdomesticnon-residentstudentsorcitizensofaforeigncountry.

TravelSupportforConferencesandProfessionalDevelopment

TheTravelSupportforStudentPresentations(TSSP)isareimbursementprogramdesignedtoencourageandassistCalStateLAgraduatestudentswhoseworkhasbeenacceptedintoaprofessional/academicconference.TheTravelSupportforProfessionalDevelopmentofGraduateStudents(TSPD)isareimbursementprogramdesignedtoencourageandassistCalStateLAgraduatestudentstoparticipateinprofessionaldevelopmentactivitiesthatwillfostertheireducationalandcareergoals.

CulminatingProjectFundtoSupportCompletionofThesis,CreativeActivity,orDissertationProgram

ThisfundisareimbursementprogramdesignedtosupportCalStateLAgraduatestudentresearchand/orscholarshipconductedtowardscompletingathesis,creativeactivity,ordissertation.Studentsfundedthroughthisawardwillreceivereimbursementforapprovedsupplies,equipment,andservices.

CaliforniaPre-DoctoralScholarsProgram(“SallyCasanovaScholars”)

TheCaliforniaPre-DoctoralprogramisdesignedtoincreasediversitywithinthepoolofuniversityfacultybysupportingthedoctoralaspirationsofstudentsintheCSU.

Chancellor'sDoctoralIncentiveProgram(CDIP)

TheCaliforniaStateUniversity(CSU)Chancellor'sDoctoralIncentiveProgram(CDIP)aimstoincreasethenumberofpromisingdoctoralstudentsapplyingforfutureCSUinstructionalfacultypositionsbyofferingfinancialassistanceintheformofaloanandmentorshipbyCSUfaculty.

NewGraduateStudentOrientation

NewGraduateStudentOrientationisachancefornewgraduateandpost-baccalaureatestudentstolearnaboutacademicpoliciesandprocedures,connectwithresourcesavailableoncampus,andnetworkwithpeers.HostedbytheOfficeofGraduateStudiesandGraduateResourceCenter,itisofferedinthefallandspring.

Thisorientationisnotmandatory,butstudentshavefounditextremelyhelpful.Itisintendedtocomplement,butnotreplaceorientationsessionsofferedbydepartments,colleges,ortheInternationalOffice.

Thesis,Project,andDissertationGuidelines

TheOfficeofGraduateStudiesprovidesthesubmissionguidelinesandsupportforgraduatestudentscompletingthethesis,project,ordissertation.CalStateLAnolongeracceptshardboundcopiesofculminatingprojects;electronicthesesanddissertations(ETD)aresubmitteddigitallyandareeventuallyavailabletoCalStateLAstudents,staff,andfacultyviatheLibrarywebsite.

Studentsareresponsibleforbeingawareofandmeetingalldeadlines,formattingrequirements,andpaperworkrequiredforthecompletionandsubmissionoftheirETD.ThisinformationmaybefoundontheThesis,Project,andDissertationGuidelineswebsite.

TheGraduateResourceCenterprovidesacademicsupport,professionaldevelopment,andcommunity-buildingopportunitiesinaspacededicatedtograduatestudents.Westrivetoarmgraduatestudentswiththetoolsrequiredinthenextstepsoftheiracademicandprofessionaljourneys.

Weguidestudentsthroughwriting,editing,andformattingthethesisanddissertationandassistinpreparingtheirworkforpublication;hostworkshopsandpresentationstosupportstudents’academicandprofessionaldevelopment;andactasageneralresourceforgraduatestudentneeds.

ThesisandDissertationSupport

Studentswhocompleteaculminatingproject,suchasathesisordissertation,filetheirfinishedmanuscriptwiththeUniversityviaouroffice.Ourstaffassiststudentswiththeformatreview,andweprovideadditionalsupportintheformofworkshops.

GraduateWritingSupportProgram

TheGraduateWritingSupportProgramfacilitatesacademicandprofessionalgrowthbypromotingwritingskillsapplicabletomultiplegenresanddisciplines.Weprovideconstructivecriticismandsuggestionsforalternativeapproachesduringconsultationscenteredonhigher-orderwritingconcerns,suchasfocus,audience,organization,anddevelopment.Weaimtoassiststudentsinfurtherdevelopingtheirwritingskillsthroughacontinualevaluationoftheirbehaviorsandbeliefsaboutwriting.

GENERAL GRADUATE AND POSTBACCALAUREATE INFORMATION

Introduction

GraduatestudyhasbeenamajorpartoftheacademiccommitmentofCalStateLAsinceitsfounding.Studentswhoareengagedingraduateandpostbaccalaureatestudyconstituteapproximatelyonefifthofthetotalstudentbody.

CalStateLAoffersMasterofArtsandMasterofSciencedegreesinavarietyofmajors,withopportunitiesforspecializationthroughtheselectionofoptionsorareasofemphasiswithindegreeprograms.AlsoofferedaretheMasterofBiotec1hnologydegree,MasterofBusinessAdministrationdegree,MasterofFineArtsdegreeinArt,MasterofFineArtsdegreeinTelevision,FilmandTheatre,MasterofMusic,MasterofArtsandMasterofSciencedegreeswithanInterdisciplinaryStudiesmajor,MasterofSocialWork,DoctorateinEducation,DoctorofNursingPractice,andtheDoctorofPhilosophydegreeinSpecialEducation.Thecompletelistofgraduatedegreesofferedappearsatthefrontofthischapter.

TheGraduationWritingAssessmentRequirement(GWAR)GraduatestudentsareconsideredtohavemettheGWARrequirementuponadmissiontotheUniversityifthey(1)earnedabachelor'sdegreeorhigherfromanaccreditedcollegeoruniversitywhereEnglishtheprimarymediumofinstruction;or(2)attainedascoreof41orbetteronthewritingportionoftheCaliforniaBasicEducationalSkillsTest(CBEST)orascoreof4ontheanalyticwritingportionoftheGREortheGMAT.

• Certificationbythemajordepartment/division/schooltothecollegegraduatedeanthatalldepartment/division/schooladmissionrequirements,procedures,andprerequisiteshavebeencompleted.

• Filingofamaster’sdegreestudyplanwiththecollegegraduatedeanduringthestudent’sfirstsemesterofgraduateenrollmentatCalStateLA.Thestudyplanmustbeapprovedbytheprincipalgraduateadviserandthemajordepartment/division/school.Anychangeinthestudyplanmustbeapprovedbytheprincipalgraduateadviser,themajordepartment/division/school,andthecollegegraduatedeanbeforethecompletedcoursesareaffectedbythechange.ThisincludescoursesinwhichagradeofIncompleteisreceived.CoursesinwhichagradeofC-orlowerwasearnedmaynotberemovedfromaStudyPlanandthesecoursesmustberepeatedwithbothgradescontributingtothegraduategradepointaverage.

SpecialActionAdmissionStudents

Exceptforthosewhoholdanadvanceddegreefromanaccreditedinstitution,allstudentsadmittedbyspecialactionmustcompleteaminimumof10semesterunitsofupperdivisionqualifyingcoursesonaformallyapprovedmaster’sdegreestudyplanwithaminimumB(3.0)gradepointaveragewiththefollowingconditions:

• Theprincipalgraduateadviser,majordepartment/division/school,andcollegegraduatedeanmustapprovequalifyingcoursesbeforethestudentcompletesthem.CoursesgradedCR/NCmaynotbeusedonthequalifyingstudyplan.

• Uponrecommendationoftheprincipalgraduateadviserandthemajordepartment/division/school,andwiththeapprovalofthecollegegraduatedean,qualifyingcoursesmaybewaivedforstudentswhosepostbaccalaureateworkdemonstratespromiseofthescholarlyabilityrequiredforgraduatestudy.Tobeeligibleforrecommendationofsuchawaiver,astudentmusthavecompleted,withaminimumB(3.0)overallgradepointaverage,10ormoresemesterunitsofupper

Admissionto5000-LevelCourses

Studentsadmittedwithpostbaccalaureateclassified,graduateclassified,orgraduateconditionallyclassifiedstandingmayenrollin5000-levelcourses.Thefollowingexceptionsandrestrictionsapply:

• Postbaccalaureateunclassifiedstudentsmayregisterfor5000-levelcoursesifthedepartment/division/schoolchairordirectordeterminesthatspaceisavailable.Thesestudentsmustsatisfyallprerequisitesforthecourseandobtaintheapprovaloftheinstructor,theprincipalgraduateadviser,andthechairofthedepartment/division/schoolthatoffersthecourse.

• Undergraduatestudentsmay,withpriorapprovalandsubjecttopoliciesgoverninggraduatecreditforundergraduatestudents,enrollinupto9semesterunitsof4000and5000-levelcoursework.SeesectiononGraduateCreditforUndergraduateStudentsinthisCatalog.

• MatriculatedCalStateLAstudentsmaynotenrollinOpenUniversitycourses.StudentswhoarenotmatriculatedatCalStateLAmayenrollin5000-levelcoursesthroughtheOpenUniversity(concurrentenrollment)ProgramadministeredbytheCollegeofExtendedStudiesandInternationalPrograms.Thesestudentsmustsatisfyallprerequisitesforthecourseandobtaintheapprovaloftheinstructorandthechairofthedepartment/division/schoolthatoffersthecourse.

• Collegesanddepartments/divisionsmayimposeadditionalrestrictions.Forallprograms,studentsmaycompletenomorethan20%oftheirtotalunitsatthe5000levelbeforetheirprincipalgraduateadviser,majordepartment/division/school,andcollegegraduatedeanhaveformallyapprovedtheirofficialmaster’sdegreestudyplan.Inaddition,allsuchstudentsmusteitherhavecompletedtheprerequisitesforthecourseordemonstratedequivalentcompetency.

EnrollmentinDegreeCredit-GrantingClassesthroughtheCollegeofProfessionalandGlobalEducation

StudentswhoarematriculatedattheUniversityincontinuingstatusmayenrollin,andearnresidencecreditfor,coursesthatareofferedthroughtheCollegeofProfessionalandGlobalEducationinself-supportspecialsessions.Anycourseorprogramofferedinspecialsessionsmust,eachtimethatitisoffered,havetheapprovaloftheappropriatecollege

Acoursemaynotbeaddedtoordeletedfromamaster’sdegreestudyplanafterithasbeentaken.Anychangeinthemaster’sdegreestudyplanmustbeapprovedinadvancebytheprincipalgraduateadviser,majordepartment/division/school,andcollegegraduatedean.Whensuchachangehasbeenapproved,itbecomespartofthemaster’sdegreestudyplan.

ProgramChangeLimitation

Nomorethan6semesterunitsbeyondthetotalnumberofunitsapprovedatthetimeastudentachievesclassifiedgraduatestandingmaybeaddedtoastudent’smaster’sdegreeprogram.

CoursePrerequisitesandCorequisites

Studentsareresponsibleforfulfillingprerequisitesandcorequisites.Theinstructoranddepartment/division/schoolhavetheauthoritytowaivespecificprerequisitesandcorequisitesforstudentswhohavecompletedequivalentcoursesatanotherinstitution,whohavehadequivalentexperience(suchasworkexperience),orwhopossesstheneededskillstoproceedwiththeworkofthecourse.Studentsshouldconsulttheinstructorbeforeregisteringtodeterminewhetherthecourse(s)orexperiencewilljustifywaiverofthestatedprerequisite(s)and/orcorequisite(s).

CulminatingExperience:Exam,Thesis,orProject

ComprehensiveExaminations

Eachprogramthatoffersthecomprehensiveexaminationforthemaster’sdegreeshallimplementandmaintaininwritingexplicitguidelinesthataddressbothcontentandproceduresrelatingtotheexamination.AllcomprehensiveexaminationsmustconformtothefollowingrequirementofTitle5:”Acomprehensiveexaminationisanassessmentofthestudent’sabilitytointegratetheknowledgeofthearea,showcriticalandindependentthinking,anddemonstratemasteryofthesubjectmatter.Theresultsoftheexaminationprovideevidenceofindependentthinking,appropriateorganization,criticalanalysis,andaccuracyofdocumentation.ArecordoftheexaminationquestionsandresponsesshallbemaintainedinaccordancewiththerecordsretentionpolicyofTheCaliforniaStateUniversity.”

Studentsmustfulfillalldepartment/division/schoolrequirementsforthewrittenand/ororalcomprehensiveexaminations.Suchrequirementsinclude,butarenotlimitedto,thedateandtimeforthecomprehensiveexaminations,lengthoftesting,topicscovered,andnumberofquestionsforthecomprehensiveexaminations.

Studentswhoseprogramrequiresacomprehensiveexaminationmustdeclaretotheirmajordepartment/division/school,atleastonesemesterinadvance,theirintenttotakeit,obtaindepartment/division/schoolpermission,andregisterforthecomprehensiveexaminationthatcarriesthecoursenumber5960intheirmajordiscipline.Studentswhoarenotenrolledinanycredit-bearingcourseduringthesemesterinwhichtheytakethecomprehensiveexaminationmustpaythecomprehensiveexaminationfee.StudentswhoelectcomprehensiveexaminationoptionsarenotpermittedtoenrollinUNIV9000.PaymentofStateUniversity,studentservices,facilities,andAssociatedStudents,Inc.(ASI)fees,oranytuitioncharges,isnotrequired.

StudentswhohaveexceededtheonecalendaryeartimelimitationassociatedwiththeSPgradingsymbolforresearchunits(5970)mustpetitiontoregisterinUNIV9000.PetitionformsandinstructionsareavailableincollegegraduatestudiesofficesandontheCollegeofProfessionalandGlobalStudieswebsite.

Studentswhohavepreviouslyenrolledinallallowableresearchunits(5970)andarenotenrolledinanyothercredit-bearingcoursesorthesisorprojectunits(5990)butwhowilluseUniversityfacilitiesorconsultwithfacultymustregisterinUNIV9000.

Tomaintainresidencerequirementsandcontinuingstudentregistrationprivileges,graduatestudentswhoarenotenrolledincredit-bearingcourseworkmustregisterforUNIV9000.

GeneralInformation

QuarterUnits/QuarterSystem

CalStateLAcreditsareexpressedinsemesterunits;onesemesterunitnormallyrepresentsnolessthanonehourofclassworkandtwoormorehoursofoutsidestudyperweekforonesemester.Onesemesterunitisequivalentto1.5quarterunits,andonequarterunitisequivalentto0.67semesterunits.

CampusIdentificationNumber(CIN)

CaliforniaStateUniversity,LosAngelesrandomlyassignsanine-digitCampusIdentificationNumber(CIN)toallstudentsintheUniversity.Thisnumberisusedasameansofidentifyingrecordsandofferingservicespertainingtostudents.Thestudents’SocialSecurityNumberwillcontinuetoberetainedforpurposesoffinancialaideligibilityandotherdebtspayabletotheinstitution.

Registration

ContinuingstudentsatCaliforniaStateUniversity,LosAngelesreceiveinformationregardingtheirregistrationappointmentdatesbyloggingintoGET(GoldenEagleTerritory).AdditionalinformationaboutregistrationproceduresisprovidedintheScheduleofClasses,availableonlineeachsemesterbeforetheregistrationperiod.Onlineregistration(GET)isavailabletoalleligiblecontinuingstudents.

Regulationsgoverningtherefundofmandatoryfees,includingnonresidenttuition,forstudentsenrollingattheCaliforniaStateUniversityareincludedinSection41802ofTitle5,CaliforniaCodeofRegulations.Forpurposesoftherefundpolicy,mandatoryfeesaredefinedasthosesystemwideandcampusfeesthatarerequiredtobepaidinordertoenrollinstate-supportedacademicprogramsattheCaliforniaStateUniversity.Refundsoffeesandtuitionchargesforself-support,specialsession,andextendedstudiesprogramsorcoursesattheCaliforniaStateUniversityaregovernedbyaseparatepolicyestablishedbytheUniversity,availablefromtheCollegeofProfessionalandGlobalEducation.

Inordertoreceiveafullrefundofmandatoryfees,lessanadministrativechargeestablishedbythecampus,includingnonresidenttuition,astudentmustcancelregistrationordropallcoursespriortothefirstdayofinstructionfortheterm.InformationonproceduresanddeadlinesforcancelingregistrationanddroppingclassesisavailableintheScheduleofClasses.

Forstate-supportedsemesters,quarters,andnon-standardtermsorcoursesoffour(4)weeksormore,astudentwhowithdrawsduringtheterminaccordancewiththeuniversity’sestablishedproceduresordropsallcoursespriortothecampus-designateddropperiodwillreceivearefundofmandatoryfees,includingnonresidenttuition,basedontheportionofthetermduringwhichthestudentwasenrolled.Nostudentwithdrawingafterthe60percentpointinthetermwillbeentitledtoarefundofanymandatoryfeesornonresidenttuition.

Studentswillalsoreceivearefundofmandatoryfees,includingnonresidenttuition,underthefollowingcircumstances:

• Thefeeswereassessedorcollectedinerror;

• TheUniversitycanceledthecourseforwhichthefeeswereassessedorcollected;

• TheUniversitymakesadelayeddecisionthatthestudentwasnoteligibletoenrollinthetermforwhichmandatoryfeeswereassessedandcollectedandthedelayeddecisionwasnotduetoincompleteorinaccurateinformationprovidedbythestudent;or

Studentswhoarenotentitledtoarefundasdescribedabovemaypetitiontheuniversityforarefunddemonstratingexceptionalcircumstancesandthechieffinancialofficeroftheuniversityordesigneemayauthorizearefundifheorshedeterminesthatthefeesandtuitionwerenotearnedbytheuniversity.

Disenrollment

StudentswhohaveatuitionandfeesobligationtotheUniversitywillbebilled.Paymentmustbemadebytheduedateprintedonthebillingstatement.Failuretopaybytheestablisheddeadlineiscausefordisenrollmentbecauseofincompletepaymentoftuitionandfees.Disenrollmentmeansthepermanentlossofcreditforclassestakenforthesemesterinvolved.Thereisnorefundofanyfeesalreadypaidforthesemesterinvolved.

Studentswhofailtocompleteallrequiredsubcollegiate(“remedial”)coursesduringtheirfirstyearatCalStateLAwillbedisenrolledfromtheUniversityincompliancewiththeCSUChancellor’sOfficeExecutiveOrder665.

FeesandDebtsOwedtotheInstitution

Shouldastudentorformerstudentfailtopayafeeoradebtowedtotheinstitution,theinstitutionmay“withholdpermissiontoregister,tousefacilitiesforwhichafeeisauthorizedtobecharged,toreceiveservices,materials,foodormerchandiseoranycombinationoftheabovefromanypersonowingadebt”untilthedebtispaid(seeTitle5,CaliforniaCodeofRegulations,Sections42380and42381).

ProspectivestudentswhoregisterforcoursesofferedbytheUniversityareobligatedforthepaymentoffeesassociatedwithregistrationforthosecourses.Failuretocancelregistrationinanycourseforanacademictermpriortothefirstdayoftheacademictermgivesrisetoanobligationtopaystudentfeesincludinganytuitionforthereservationofspaceinthecourse.

Theinstitutionmaywithholdpermissiontoregisterortoreceiveofficialtranscriptsofgradesorotherservicesofferedbytheinstitutionfromanyoneowingfeesoranotherdebttotheinstitution.Theinstitutionmayalsoreportthedebttoacreditbureau,offsettheamountdueagainstanyfuturestatetaxrefundsduethestudent,referthedebttoanoutsidecollectionagencyand/orchargethestudentactualandreasonablecollectioncosts,includingreasonableattorneyfeesiflitigationisnecessary,incollectinganyamountnotpaidwhendue.

WithdrawalsandLeaves

WithdrawalfromCourses

Thelastdayofthesemesteronwhichastudentmay,withtheapprovaloftheinstructor,addclassesisthesamedayofthethirdweekasthedayoftheweekonwhichclassesbegan.

Studentsmaywithdrawwithoutrestrictionorgradingpenaltyuptoandincludingthesixthdayofinstruction.Forthispurpose,Saturdayisnotcountedasadayofinstruction.StudentswhoseclassmeetsweeklyandwhosefirstclassisnotheldduetoaUniversityholidayshallbegivenonedayafterthefirstclassmeetingtowithdraw.Forthispurpose,Saturdayisnotcountedasadayofinstruction.

Insuchcases,norecordofindividualcoursewithdrawalappearsonthepermanentacademicrecord.

Dropsbetweentheseventhdayofinstruction,asexceptedabove,andtheendoftheeleventhweekofthesemesterarepermittedonlyforseriousandcompellingreasons.Thestudentmustobtainthesignaturesofthecourseinstructorandthedepartment/divisionchairorschooldirectoronadroprequestform,whichshallstatethereasonsforthewithdrawal.Undergraduatestudentsshallnotbeallowedtowithdrawfrommorethanatotalof18semesterunitsattemptedatCalStateLAexceptasspecifiedbelow.

CancellationofRegistrationorWithdrawalfromtheInstitution

Studentswhofinditnecessarytocanceltheirregistrationortowithdrawfromallclassesafterenrollingforanyacademictermarerequiredtofollowtheuniversity’sofficialwithdrawalprocedures.Failuretofollowformaluniversityproceduresmayresultinanobligationtopayfeesaswellastheassignmentoffailinggradesinallcoursesandtheneedtoapplyforreadmissionbeforebeingpermittedtoenrollinanotheracademicterm.InformationoncancelingregistrationandwithdrawalproceduresisavailableatAdministration146orbywritingapersonalrequesttotheOfficeofEnrollmentServices.

Studentswhoreceivefinancialaidfundsmustconsultwithafinancialaidofficerpriortowithdrawingfromtheuniversityregardinganyrequiredreturnorrepaymentofgrantorloanassistancereceivedforthatacademictermorpaymentperiod.Studentswhohavereceivedfinancialaidandwithdrawfromtheinstitutionduringtheacademictermorpaymentperiodmayneedtoreturnorrepaysomeorallofthefundsreceived,whichmayresultinadebtowedtotheinstitution.

Evaluationofpetitionsforleavesofabsencetakesintoaccountthestudent’sstatedplansandtheextenttowhichaleavewouldcontributetoeducationalobjectives.Studentsareexpectedtoplantheirtimeofreturnandtheiractivitiesduringtheleave.Theymustalsostatewhyitiscriticaltoremainincontinuousresidence.Inthecaseofmedicalorfinancialleaves,theymuststatehowtheyplantoremaincurrentwithoradvanceintheiracademicfield.

StudentConduct:RightsandResponsibilities

StandardsforStudentConduct

AcademicHonesty

TheUniversityinitsquestfortruthandknowledgeembraceshonestyandintegrity.Thesefundamentalvaluesmustnotbecompromised.Thetrustandrespectamongprofessors,studentsandthesocietyneedtobevigilantlyprotected.Cheatingandplagiarismcanbeneitherjustifiednorcondonedasthiswoulddestroytheidealsandpurposesofhighereducation.StudentsentertheUniversitytogaintheknowledgeandtoolsnecessaryforparticipationinsociety.Academicintegrityisonefoundationforasocietybasedontrustandhonesty.Therefore,theUniversitytakesseriouslyitsresponsibilityforacademichonesty.

AcademicConsequences

Facultyhavetherighttoestablishthestandardsbywhichtheacademicperformanceofstudentswillbeevaluated,includingtheconsequencesofstudentsnotmeetingsomeportionoralloftheacademicrequirementsofacoursethroughactsofcheating,plagiarism,misrepresentationorcollusion.Theseconsequencesmayincludebutarenotlimitedtoassigningaloweredgrade,zeroor“F”onanindividualassignment,orloweringthestudent’sgradeorassigningan“F”inthecourse.Facultymayalternativelypermitthestudenttorepeatanassignment/testorcompleteandsubmitadditionalassignments.

AdministrativeSanctions

Cheating,plagiarism,orotherformsofacademicdishonestythatareintendedtogainunfairacademicadvantagealsoviolatetheStudentConductCode(Subsection41301ofTitle5,CaliforniaCodeofRegulations).Tothatend,violationsoftheAcademicHonestyPolicyshouldalsobereportedtotheJudicialAffairsOfficer.TheUniversitycanimposeadministrativesanctionsinadditiontoacademicconsequences.AsstipulatedinExecutive

Order1043,StudentConductProcedures,amongotherplaces,cheating,plagiarism,misrepresentationorcollusion,inconnectionwithanacademicprogramorcampusmaywarrant,butisnotnecessarilylimitedtoDisciplinaryProbation,SuspensionorExpulsion.Repeatoffenderswillreceiveparticularconsiderationforadministrativesanctions.Pleasenotethatarecordofalldisciplinarycharges,includingcheatingandplagiarism,willbemaintainedintheJudicialAffairsOfficeforaminimumoffiveyears.Disciplinaryfilesareseparatefromacademicfilesandsubjecttodisclosuretothirdpartiesbypriorwrittenconsentofthestudent,oracourtorderedsubpoena.

ReportingProcedures

Whensatisfiedthatareasonableevidentiarystandardhasbeenmetandassoonaspossibleafterdiscoveringtheallegedviolation,thefacultymembershouldarrangeanofficeconferenceinordertoinformthestudentoftheallegationsandtheintendedacademicconsequencesoftheviolations.Attheconference,thestudentshouldbeinformedofthesupportingevidence,theintendedconsequencesandtheAcademicHonestyPolicy.

Non-AcademicStudentGrievances

CaliforniaStateUniversity,LosAngelesiscommittedtocreatingandmaintainingaworking,learning,andsocialenvironmentforallmembersoftheUniversitycommunitythatisfreefromviolence.

Civility,understanding,andmutualrespecttowardallmembersoftheUniversitycommunityareintrinsictoexcellenceinteachingandlearning,totheexistenceofasafeandhealthfulworkplace,andtomaintenanceofacampuscultureandenvironmentthatservestheneedsofitsmanyconstituencies.Threatsofviolenceoractsofviolencenotonlyimpacttheindividualsconcerned,butalsothemissionoftheUniversitytofosterhighereducationthroughopendialogueandthefreeexchangeofideas.TheUniversityprohibitsandwilltakedecisiveactiontoeliminateverbalharassment,violentacts,threatsofviolence,oranyotherbehaviorthatbyintent,action,oroutcomeharmsanotherperson.Suchconductissubjecttodisciplinaryactionuptoandincludingdismissalfromemployment,expulsionfromtheUniversity,orcivilorcriminalprosecutionasappropriate.

Graduatestudentswhoareingoodstandingandareenrolledinoneormoreresidencecoursesmayrequestpermissiontoreceivecreditforcoursesbyexamination.Graduatecreditbyexaminationisrestrictedtoeligible4000-and5000-levelcourseslistedinthiscatalog.Itiswithoutunitlimit,butdoesnotcountasresidencecredit.TotalcreditearnedforcoursesandexaminationstakeninSpecialSessionsmaynotexceedthelimitestablishedforSpecialSessionstudy.SeeUniversityRequirementsforMaster’sDegrees.

ModernLanguageReadingExamination

TheModernLanguageReadingExaminationisincludedinModernLanguagecourselistingsasModernLanguage(ML)4010.GraduatestudentswhoseprogramsrequirethattheypasstheexaminationmustobtainpermissionfromtheDepartmentofModernLanguagesandLiteraturesandpayanexaminationfeewhentheyregisterfortheexamination.Thefeemustbepaideachsemestertheexaminationisattempted.NootherregistrationfeesarerequiredwhenthestudentregistersonlyfortheModernLanguageReadingExamination,andstudentsarenotentitledtothesameprivilegesandservicesasstudentsenrolledinregularclasses.ModernLanguageReadingExaminationresultsarepostedonstudents’academicrecordandappearonofficialtranscripts.Thisexamisnotgivenduringthesummerterm.

IftheModernLanguageReadingexaminationisnotofferedincurrentorfutureterms,studentsshouldconsultwiththefacultygraduateadvisorintheirdepartmenttolearnhowtootherwisemeetthecorrespondingrequirement.

Scholarships

Thereareover300scholarshipsavailabletostudentswhoarecurrentlyattendingCalStateLA.Availablescholarshipshaveawidevarietyofcriteria,andmanyareforundergraduate,graduateandcertificatestudentsenrolledwiththeUniversity.Scholarshipsarebasedonsuchcriteriaasacademicmajor,academicachievement,campusand/orcommunityparticipation,financialneed,oravarietyofotherpurposes.Somescholarshipswillprovidefundingforstudentfees;otherswillsupportthecostofbooks,transportationandlivingexpenses.Studentswhowishtobeconsideredforallinstitutionalscholarshipsforwhichtheyarequalifiedshouldconsulttheinformationonthe“Scholarships”pageoftheCenterforStudentFinancialAid&Scholarshipswebsite.

CalStateLAprovidesthelatestinformationtechnologyresourcestostudents,facultyandstaff.Studentshaveaccessto217electronicclassroomswithnetworkedcomputers,fivestudentOpenAccessLabs,threetraininglabsandmanyother“smart”rooms.Studentsalsohaveaccesstoavarietyofstate-of-the-art,campus-providedcomputerswithmorethan200softwarepackages,applicationsandplug-ins,includingthelatestwebbrowsers.Thecampuswidewirelessnetwork(802.11a/b/g/n)providesanytimenetworkaccesstoUniversityandInternetresourcesforlaptops,iPads,smartphonesandotherelectronicdevices.Accessisavailableinsideallclassroombuildingsandfromalloutsideareaswhereseatingisavailable.

OpenAccessLabs(OAL)

OpenAccessLabsareavailabletostudentsduringdaytime,eveningandweekendhours.Thelabsarestaffedbyqualifiedstudenttechnologyassistantswhoanswerquestionsandprovideassistance.ThefiveOALsprovidestudentaccesstoavarietyofservicesincluding:useofWindowsandMACcomputers;printing;informalloungeenvironmentwithwirelessaccess.Inaddition,threeofthelabsalsohavesmartrooms,whichhavethesameequipmentastheelectronicclassrooms,allowingstudentstopracticetheirpresentations.
