All Senate fellowships are on-site in Albany, New Y ork. Fellowships are not fnancial aid or academic work, on-campus or classroom study. Housing in Albany is the responsibility o the Fellow. A Grant-in-Study Stipend is awarded — $32,000 — distributed in biweekly installments prorated rom the frst day to the last day o enrollment. Some beneft options are available (health, dental, vision, lie insurance, and the retirement program). Applications rom a wide range o interests and disciplines are welcome and encouraged. Training in the histor y/politics/government o New York State is not required. Placements are usually to the ofce o an elected Member o the Senate. While Fellows are not Senate employees, ater the program ends, Fellows may sometimes be hired to ull employee status in the Senate. A great number o or mer Fellows are today employees o the Senate, the Assembly , the Executive Chamber , agencies, associations, and lobbying frms. Fellows must be United States citizens, except in the case of the International Fellowship Program.

Fellowship Overview

Basic EligibilityFellows must be United States citizens, except

in the case o the International Fellowship

Program.

In most cases Fellows must be ull-time

matriculated graduate students in an accredited

university during the immediately previous

spring and all semesters.

Fellowships are open to all Majors.

The Biggane Fellow will be a person in mid-

career, not less than 35 years o age at the time

o application. Biggane applicants need not be

currently enrolled in graduate-level study, but

must have previous graduate-level experience.

Writing SamplesThe frst writing sample is an essay. Any topic

is acceptable. This may be a paper or portion o 

a paper previously prepared or a class. Lengthshould be between 5-10 pages (double-spaced,

single sided 8.5 x 11).

The second writing sample is to be a policy

proposal (single spaced, one page).

The third writing sample is to be a rebuttal o 

your policy proposal (single spaced, one page).

The ourth writing sample is your Statement

o Purpose. It should be no more than two

single-spaced, 8.5 x 11 pages. The Statement

should explain why you are applying, what you

hope to accomplish, and which ellowship you

preer and why.

Interviews and SelectionInterviews will be scheduled in May and

selections determined in June.

Ofce PlacementAll ofce placements are arranged by the

Ofce o Student Programs only. Each

Fellow is assigned to a speciic oice and

is expected to unction much as a regular

sta member.

While most placements are to the ofce o

an elected member, the Roth, Wiebe, and

Biggane placements are made to central sta ofces rather than the ofce o an elected

member. The Roth placement is made to the

Senate Press Ofce, the Wiebe placement to

the Majority Counsel/Program Services Ofce,

and the Biggane placement to the Senate

Finance Committee.

Concurrent employment, on-campus

obligations, and class work that may

conlict with ellowship commitments is

prohibited. Upon arrival in September,

Fellows participate in an orientation

program in addition to regularly scheduled

inormational orums.
