When inventor Edwin A. Stevens died in 1868, his will provided for the establishment of the university that now bears his family’s name. Two years later, in 1870, Stevens Institute of Technology opened, offering a rigorous engineering curriculum leading to the degree of Mechanical Engineer following a course of study firmly grounded both in scientific principles and the humanities.

Over subsequent decades, Stevens grew by leaps and bounds, evolving from a relatively small four-year undergraduate college of engineering into a leading global technical university with particular strengths in key fields such as computing, artificial intelligence, resilience engineering, complex systems, healthcare and biomedical research, and finance. The university produced two Nobel Prize winners and countless new technologies, including a new process for producing synthetic penicillin.

In 1971, Stevens opened its doors to women for the first time. In 1982, Stevens became the first major U.S. educational institution to require students to purchase and use personal computers in the classroom. At approximately this same time, Stevens also developed one of the nation’s first intranets, foretelling a revolution in information technology.

Today Stevens continues to grow, expanding enrollment, facilities and research programs. The university’s collaborations with industry and government include three National Centers of Excellence designated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense and Office of Naval Research.

Stevens faculty and alumni continue to make a significant impact globally, building upon the legacy of its founding family.

Seifollah “Seifi” Ghasemi

Commencement Speaker

S eifi Ghasemi is chairman, president and CEO of Air Products, a leading industrial gas company headquartered in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The Fortune 500 company provides atmospheric

gases, process and specialty gases to technology, energy, medical and industrial markets worldwide. It is also the world’s leading supplier of liquefied natural gas process technology and equipment.

As head of Air Products, Mr. Ghasemi overseas a global enterprise of approximately 15,000 employees, with operations in 50 countries. In his current role, he is focused on setting the strategy and policies of the com-pany, developing leadership and meeting shareholder commitments. Under his leadership, which began in 2014, Air Products has developed into the world’s most profitable industrial gases company, reporting fiscal 2017 sales of $8.2 billion and a current market capital-ization of approximately $35 billion.

Mr. Ghasemi also serves as chairman of Versum Materi-als, Inc., the former Electronic Materials division of Air Products that was spun off from the company in 2016.

Prior to joining Air Products, from 2001 to 2014 Mr. Ghasemi served as chairman and CEO of Rockwood Holdings, a global leader in inorganic specialty chemi-cals and advanced materials that was acquired by Albe-marle Corporation in 2015.

From 1997 to 2001, he held leadership roles at GKN, a global engineering group, including positions as direc-tor of the main board of GKN plc and chairman and chief executive officer of GKN Sinter Metals, Inc. and Hoeganaes Corporation.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Ghasemi spent nearly 20 years with The BOC Group (the industrial gas company which is now part of Linde AG) in positions including director of the main board of BOC Group plc; president of BOC Gases Americas; and chairman and CEO of BOC Process Plants, Ltd. and Cryostar.

A leading figure in the chemical industry, Mr. Ghasemi is a member of The Business Council, an association of the chief executive officers of the world’s most important business enterprises. He was honored for his distinguished contributions to his industry when he received the 2017 biennial International Palladium Medal from the Société de Chimie Industrielle.

He received an honorary doctorate degree from La-fayette College in 2017. His deep connection to that school reaches back to when he was a young engineer-ing student in Iran. Earlier this year, he and Air Prod-ucts Foundation made a generous gift in support of an endowed faculty chair in engineering and associated facilities dedicated to interdisciplinary teaching at Lafayette.

Mr. Ghasemi earned his bachelor of science degree in general engineering from Abadan Institute of Technol-ogy and holds a master of science degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University.

Yu-Dong Yao

Conferral of Honorary Degree

Y u-Dong Yao is an internationally recognized scholar and researcher in wireless commu-nications, cognitive radio and software-de-fined radio. He has been a faculty member

at Stevens Institute of Technology since 2000.

He has served as chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) in the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science since 2007, earning distinc-tion as the longest-serving chair in the school’s history. He is also a director of Stevens’ Wireless Information Systems Engineering Laboratory (WISELAB). Under Dr. Yao’s leadership, the ECE department has made significant progress in graduate and undergraduate program development and faculty research.

Dr. Yao’s research in wireless communications, secure networks and antenna technologies has been sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the United States Army, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and other government agencies. Currently he is supported by the Department of Defense’s Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) in a project to build and test secure information tech-nology that functions well in real-world battlefield conditions.

He has also served as advisor or co-advisor to 21 Ph.D. students and 12 master’s theses to date.

Prior to joining Stevens, Dr. Yao was with Qualcomm Inc., where he participated in research and development in wireless code-division multiple-access systems from 1994 through 2000. From 1989 to 1990, Dr. Yao was a research associate at Carleton University in Ottawa, where he worked on mobile radio communications. From 1990 to 1994, he worked for Spar Aerospace Ltd. in Montreal, where he was involved in research on satel-lite communications.

Dr. Yao has been an active member of Wireless and Op-tical Communications Conference (WOCC), Inc., a non-profit organization that promotes wireless and optical communications research and technical exchange. He has served as WOCC president (2008-10) and chairman of the board of trustees (2010-12).

Dr. Yao is a scholar with a strong portfolio of accom-plishments. He has published approximately 80 journal papers and 100 conference papers. His work has also re-sulted in 14 issued patents in the areas of mobile radio services, secure voice services and CDMA technologies.

Between 2001 and 2008, Dr. Yao served as editor or as-sociate editor of three IEEE journals: IEEE Communica-tions Letters, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology and IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications.

Among his many honors and awards, Dr. Yao was elected an IEEE Fellow for contributions to wireless communications systems in 2011. He is also a Fellow of both the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Inventors. In 2013, he received the Advancement of Invention Award from the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame. For his contributions as an educator and mentor, Dr. Yao was awarded the Ste-vens Alumni Association Outstanding Teacher Award in 2008.

Yu-Dong Yao holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications in China and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Southeast University in China.

The academic gown and hood dates back to the early 14th century in England. In 1895, representatives of American colleges and universities met at Columbia University and prepared a code regulating the design and wearing of academic

dress in this country. The code was revised in 1932 and again in 1960.

Each member in the procession wears the hood designating the college last attended and degree last received. The hood is worn over the shoulders

and is lined with the official color or colors of the college attended. The color on the edging of the hood, a strip of velvet or velveteen about

two inches wide, indicates the major field of study.

Some of the trimming colors that you will see today include:

Engineering, orange

Science, golden yellow

Humanities, white

Business, drab

Medicine, green

Economics, copper

Social Science, citron

Environmental Science, antique gold

Philosophy, dark blue

Music, pink

Law, purple

Fine Arts, brown

Many of our students will also be wearing a number of other items such as cords and stoles. These represent the many fraternal

organizations and clubs that each student is a member.
