MissionStatement

Thehistorydepartmentrepresentsacommunityofscholarscommittedtoseekingtruth,increasingknowledge,producingscholarship,andexpandingstudents’minds.ThemajorobjectivesoftheGraduateProgramincludetrainingprofessionalhistorians,providingspecializedtraininginthemethodologyofhistoricalinterpretation,andcraftingarchivalresearchskillsasabasisforexcellenceinprofessionalandscholarlycommunities.

IDegreesOfferedTheDepartmentofferstheMasterofArtsandDoctorofPhilosophydegrees.StudentsmayoptformajorandminorfieldsinUnitedStates,AfricanDiaspora,Africa,andLatinAmerican&CaribbeanhistoryfortheMAandPhDdegrees.StudentsmayselectPublichistoryasmajorfieldfortheMAdegreeorasminorfieldforthePhD.TheexcellentresearchandeducationalfacilitiesintheWashingtonDCarea-includingtheLibraryofCongress,NationalArchives,andSmithsonianInstitution-provideuniqueresearchopportunitiesforgraduatesintheprogram.GraduatestudentsmayalsosamplecoursesinotherdepartmentsandschoolsoftheUniversity,whiletheConsortiumofUniversitiesoftheWashingtonMetropolitanArea(CUWMA)allowsstudentstoselectcoursesofferedatnearbyinstitutionshttps://www2.howard.edu/academics/exchange/cuwma

IIAdmissionPolicies

ApplicantsmustcompleteallrequiredapplicationformsandsubmittotheOfficeofGraduateRecruitmentandAdmissionsthefollowingdocuments:A/Officialtranscriptsfromallpost-secondaryinstitutionsB/Threeofficiallettersofrecommendation C/GraduateRecordExamination(GRE)scores D/WritingsampleE/StatementofpurposeindicatingwhygraduatestudyatHowardhttps://gs.howard.edu/admissions/admission-requirementsTheGraduateFacultyischargedwithreviewingapplicationsanddecidingonadmissions.Thisprocessshallbecollaborativeandtimelyinordertoattractnewgraduatestotheprogram.ItistheDGS’sresponsibilitytomakegraduateapplicationsavailableinatimelymanneraswellastoinformtheGraduateSchoolofthedepartment’sdecisions.Applicantswhohaveearnedabachelor’sdegreeoritsequivalentwillbeconsideredforadmissiontotheMAdegreeprogramorthePhDdegreeprogramiftheyhavecompletedtheirmajorwithagradeofBorbetterandhaveacumulativeaverageof3.0orbetter.Non-historyundergraduatemajorsareadvisedthattheywillbecompetingonanequalbasiswithapplicantswhohavehadpreparationinthedisciplineofhistoryandthatitmaybenecessaryforthemtomakeupdeficienciesorshowevidenceofcomparablemastery.StudentswhohavedoneworkbeyondtheBAdegreeatanotheruniversitywillbeconsideredforadmissiontotheMAorPhDprogramsifthelevelofperformancehasbeensatisfactory.UpontheGraduateFaculty’srecommendation,studentsmaytransferupto6credithoursofgraduatestudytowardstheMAdegreeorupto24credithourstowardthePhDdegreeinhistoryatHoward.ThetransferofcoursecreditsisarrangedbetweenthegraduatestudentandtheDGS.StudentspursuingaMAdegreeinhistoryatHowardUniversitymustseekformaladmissiontothePhDprogrambeforecontinuingworkforthedoctorate.StudentsmayapplyduringthesemesterinwhichtheyexpecttocompletethecourseworkfortheMAdegree.StudentswhohaveearnedaMAdegreeinhistoryatHowardUniversitymustalsoseekformaladmissionstothePhDprogrambeforecontinuingworkforthedoctorate.ThecompletionoftheMAdegreedoesnotguaranteeadmissiontothePhDprogram.TheMAdegreeisnotrequiredforstudentsenteringthePhDprogram,butthecandidatemusthaveaminimumGPAof3.5.StudentswhohaveearnedanMAdegreeinhistoryatanotheruniversitywillbeconsideredforadmissiontothePhDprogramuponsubmissionofproofthatworkcompletedfortheirdegreeisequivalenttotherequirementsfortheMAdegreeatHoward,oruponcompletionofthoserequirements.AttheGraduateFaculty’sdiscretion,applicantsmaymeritdirectadmissiontothePhDprogramwhennotcoveredbytheabove.Thoseseekingconsiderationunderthiscategoryshouldsubmitrelevantcareercredentialsorevidenceofexceptionalacademicperformance.

IIIFinancialAid

Therearethreemajorformsoffinancialassistanceavailabletograduatestudents.NewapplicantsareeligibletocompetefortheFrederickDouglassFellowshipAwardfromtheGraduateSchool.Itprovidestuition,fees,andastipendinexchangeforweeklyserviceforfiveyears(enteringwithoutanMAdegree)orthreeyears(enteringwithanMAdegree).TheseawardsareverycompetitiveandUniversity-wide.Theapplicationdeadlineismid-January.GraduateAssistantshipsareawardedannuallyonacompetitivebasis.Theseprovidetuition,fees,andastipendinexchangeforweeklyservice.ApplicationsareduetowardtheendofthespringsemesterandprocessedbytheDGSfordecision-makingbytheGraduateFaculty.Uponadmissiontocandidacy,studentswhosetopicsinvolveoverseasresearchshouldworkwiththeiradvisorstosubmitapplicationstotheGraduateSchoolfortheSasakawaYoungLeadersFellowshipProgram.StudentsshouldconsulttheGraduateSchool,theiradvisors,andtheDGSaboutotherpossiblesourcesofresearchfunding.Forfurtherdetailsseehttps://gs.howard.edu/funding-finder

IVGeneralRequirements

StudentsareexpectedtocompletetherequirementsinaccordancewiththeRulesandRegulationsoftheGraduateSchoolandtheDepartmentofHistoryfromthedateofinitialregistrationintherespectiveprogram:*MAdegreewithintwotothreeyears,*PhDdegreewithinfivetosevenyears.ThosenotgraduatingwithinthesetimeframeswillbediscontinuedandnolongereligiblefordegreesintheDepartmentofHistoryatHowardUniversity.

TheGraduateSchoolrequiresthefollowingnumberofhoursforgraduatecoursecredit:*30hoursfortheMAdegree,*72hoursforthePhDdegree.Allcoursesnumbered200andaboveearngraduatecredit.Coursesnumbered170to199alsoearngraduatecredit,butonlyamaximumof9hoursearnedincoursesbelow200willbecountedtowardthedegree.Credithoursearnedmorethanfiveyearspriortotheterminwhichthestudenttakesthecomprehensiveexaminationwillnotbeacceptedinfulfillmentofdegreerequirements.CoursescanbecountedtowardthefulfillmentofdegreerequirementsonlyiftheyarerestoredwiththeapprovaloftheGraduateFacultyandtheDeanoftheGraduateSchool.Thestudentmustpassanexaminationadministeredexpresslyforthepurposeofrestorationofcreditsinthecourse(s)concernedoracomprehensiveexaminationinthefieldinwhichthecoursefalls.ExpositoryWritingExamination(EWE)Inordertobecomedegreecandidates,studentsmustfirstdemonstrateproficiencyintheEnglishlanguagebypassingtheEWE.ItisrecommendedthatthestudentregisteronlinetotaketheexaminationduringthefirstsemesteruponenteringtheGraduateProgram.Informationconcerningthisrequirementmaybeobtainedonlineathttps://gs.howard.edu/students/rules-and-regulations/article-iv-english-competency-and-expository-writing-requirementResultsareautomaticallyforwardedtotheDGS.ResponsibleConductofResearch(RCR)TheRCRWorkshopisintendedtoprovidestudentswithinformationonpertinentfederalandUniversityguidelinesandregulationspertainingtotheresponsibleconductofresearchaswellastoinstructtheminamethodofutilizingmoralreasoningskillsinrespondingtoethicaldilemmasinresearch.Workshoptopicsincludeintellectualproperty,datasharingandunderstandingofInstitutionalReviewBoard(IRB)policiesandprocedures,dataacquisitionandmanagement,andmentoring.TheRCRtrainingworkshopisarequirementforadmissiontocandidacy.ToreceivetheRCRcertificate,studentsmustcompleteallrequiredtrainingsessionsandsuccessfullycompletealearningassessmentexerciseattheendoftheworkshop.Thesesessionsarenowaccessibleonline.

VCoursework

Graduatecoursesdifferintermsoftypeoftraining,facultyexpertise,andgraduateneeds.Therearefourmajortypesofcoursesofferedinthegraduateprogram.1.Readings:Thesecoursesallowthestudenttoreviewagivenbodyofhistoricalliterature,asdirectedbytheinstructor.Theremayberegularweeklymeetingsdevotedtodiscussion,explanation,exchangeofideas,andcriticalanalysisoftexts.Writtenreviewsmayberequired,butnotaresearchpaper.(HIST326,327ReadingsinSelectedPeriodsandTopicsinUSHistory,HIST389ReadingsintheAfricanDiaspora,etc.)2.Methodology:Thesecoursesaredesignedtotrainstudentsinhistoricalwriting,interpretationofdata,investigativetechniques,andresearchskills(HIST200Historiography,HIST341ProblemsinLatinAmericanandCaribbeanHistory,etc.)3.Seminar:Thesecoursesprovidethestudentwithanopportunitytoconductarchivalordocumentaryresearchwithinagivenfield.Therewillbeweeklymeetingsofatleasttwoandahalfhoursthroughoutthesemester,whereprogressreportsandfinalpresentationofresearchpaperwillbesubjecttocriticalanalysisbythegroup(HIST438SeminarintheAfricanDiaspora,HIST430to433SeminarinAfricanHistory,etc.)4.Independent:Thesecoursestaketwoforms-A/ReadingstohelpthosepreparingfortheComprehensiveExamination,tofillgapsintheirbackground,synthesizematerials,andaccumulatehistoriographicalinformationunderthesupervisionofaninstructor.Meetingsarearrangedonanindividualbasis(HIST480to489IndependentReadings.) B/Researchtofacilitateastudentworkingunderthesupervisionofaninstructor,withsetspecificobjectivesorgoalsforthesemester.Meetingsarearrangedonanindividualbasis.Studentswillbeevaluatedontheirexpectedoutcomesandprogresstowardacompletedproject,thesis,ordissertation(HIST490to499IndependentResearch.)AtthestartofIndependentReadingsandIndependentResearchcourses,thestudentshouldfileaprojectdescriptionwiththeDGSbythesecondweekofthesemester.TheGraduateSchoolacceptsamaximumof12credithoursofindependentcoursesforstandardgradesappliedtotheGPA.Additionalcoursesarelimitedto“pass”or“fail”evaluation.

3.Seminar,6credithours,majorfield.Twoseminarcoursesarerequired,andleastoneshouldbeinthestudent’smajorfield.Tofulfilltheseminarpaperoption,thestudentmustofferapaperwrittenforaseminarinthemajorfieldofstudy.TheseminarcourseforOptionBcannotbetakeninthesamesemesterinwhicharequestforadmissiontocandidacyissubmitted.Theseminarpaperwritteninthemajorfieldwillberevisedforpresentation.An“I”orincompletegradeissubmittedfortheseminarcourseandchangedtoastandardlettergradeafterthepaperispresented.(NB:InternationalstudentsandstudentsreceivingfederalsupportfromtheOfficeofFinancialAidshouldseetheDirectorofGraduateStudiesforadditionalinformationregardingalternativestoincompletegrades.ItisrecommendedthatthesestudentstakeHIST300or301credits,ifneeded,inthefinalsemesteroftheprogram.)4.Electives,9credithours.AstudentmayselectelectivesfromofferingsintheHistoryDepartmentorinotherdepartmentsorschoolsaslongastheyarerelevanttothestudent’sprogram.Sixtoninehoursinonefieldofhistoryorinonerelateddisciplinemaybeselectedasaminor.Noelectivecoursecanbeappliedtotherequirementsinmorethanonefield.ForeignLanguageRequirementAstudentmustdemonstratetheabilitytoreadhistoricalmaterialsinoneforeignlanguage.Thisrequirementmaybefulfilledinoneoffourways:1.PassingthestandardizedtestadministeredbytheEducationalTestingServiceinappropriatelanguagewithaminimumscoreof470.2.Havingaminorfield(15-18hours)attheundergraduatelevelinanappropriatelanguagedepartmentatHowardUniversity.3.PassinganexaminationpreparedfortheDepartmentofHistoryinconsultationwiththeWorldLanguagesandCulturesDepartment.4.EarningagradeofBorbetterineitheranadvancedlevelcourseinanappropriatelanguageoracourseinanappropriatelanguageespeciallypreparedbyalanguagedepartmentforgraduatestudents.AdmissiontoCandidacyAstudentmustbeformallyadmittedtocandidacyfortheMasterofArtsdegree.Applicationforadmissiontocandidacymayoccuraftertwosemestersofresidenceor12hoursofcourseworkinthemajorfield,butastudentisnoteligibletoapplyuntilthethesisorseminarpapertopichasbeenapprovedinwritingandtheforeignlanguagerequirementfulfilled.ThesisorSeminarDocumentandFinalOralExaminationAcandidatechoosingPlanAmustnotifytheDGStoinitiatetheprocessofsecuringformalapprovalofthethesistopicfromthegraduatefacultymemberwhohasagreedtoserveasthethesissupervisor.Inconsultationwiththethesissupervisor,thecandidateshallrequesttwoadditionalgraduatefacultymemberstoserveasreaders.Thethesissupervisorandthetworeadersshallconstitutethecandidate’sThesisCommittee.FollowingapprovalofthecompletedthesisbytheThesisCommittee,thecandidatewillberequiredtopassatwo-houroralexaminationthatmaybeadministeredbythesamethreefacultymembersofwhichtwomembersshouldrepresentthemajorfieldandthethesis.Aftertheoralexaminationcommittee

Studentsrequire72credithours.ThesemayincludecreditearnedattheMAlevel.Satisfactorycompletionofcourseworkisonlyoneofseveralrequirementsforthedoctorate.Particularlyimportantisthestudent’sperformanceintheComprehensiveExamination.Inaddition,studentsmustalsofulfilltheforeignlanguagerequirement,submitaformalproposalforadmissiontocandidacy,writeanacceptabledissertation,andsuccessfullydefendthedissertationatafinaloralexamination.AFieldsofConcentrationAllstudentsarerequiredtochooseonemajorfieldofconcentrationandoneminorfield.TheMAJORfieldsareUnitedStates,AfricanDiaspora,Africa,&LatinAmerica.TheMINORfieldsareUnitedStates,AfricanDiaspora,Africa,LatinAmerica,andPublichistory.Astudentmayselectfromthemajororminorfields.Whenastudentchoosescourseclusterswithinthemajorfieldinordertoconcentrateonaspecialinterest,thestudentcontinuestobeheldresponsiblefortheentirefield.(SeedetailsontheAfricanDiasporaandPublichistoryprogramsbelow)BCourseDistributionThe72credithoursrequiredforthedoctorate,includingcreditearnedattheMAlevel,aredistributedasfollows:1.Historiography(H200),3credithours,mandatory,fallsemester. AgradeofBorbettermustbeearned.StudentsreceivingalessergradewillberequiredtorepeatthecourseuntiltheBisearned.Aftertwoattempts,failuretodosowillautomaticallyleadtoareviewofthestudent’sgraduatestatusbytheGraduateFaculty.2.Majorfield,12credithours.A.ReadingsCourses,6credithours.Studentsmusttaketwocoursesof3creditsthatcoverthebulkofthemajorfield.B.SeminarCourses,6credithoursStudentsmusttaketworesearchseminarsforthreecreditseach.StudentswhocompletedaMAinHistoryatHowardmaycountoneseminartowardsthisrequirement.3.Minorfield,6credithoursReadingsCourses,6credithours4.History420-DirectedReadingintheMajorField,1to12credithoursOpentoPh.D.studentsonly,thiscourseaimstopreparestudentsinachronologicalorthematicsubfieldtositfortheirqualifyingComprehensiveExaminationintheirmajorfield.Inanefforttogainmasteryovertheliteratureinhisorhermajorfield,thestudentwillmeetwiththeinstructorandagreeuponareadinglistintheinstructor'sgeneralareaofspecialization.Thelistshouldreflectscholarshipdeemedessentialfordemonstratingcompetenceinthesubfieldandthereforelikelytobereflectedonthequalifyingexamination.Overthecourseofthesemester,thestudentwillmeetwiththeinstructortodiscussthereadings.Writtenassignmentsshouldaimatassistingstudentswiththeirexampreparationorindemonstratingabroadknowledgeofthefield.Coursemaybetakenforatotalof12hours,butno

ForeignLanguageRequirementsforAfricanHistoryAspartoftherequirementsforthedoctorateandbeforeadmissiontocandidacy,astudentmustdemonstratereadingabilityinaEuropeanlanguage,preferablyFrench,andoneAfricanlanguagerelatedtotheareaofresearch.IftheMAdegreeandthePhDdegreearecontinuousintheDepartmentatHowardUniversity,theminimumETSscoreof470attheMasterslevelmayalsosatisfytheEuropeanlanguagerequirementbyawaiveroftheETSbydemonstratinganexistingminor(15-28hours)intherequiredlanguageasshownontheundergraduatetranscriptwithaBaverageinthesamelanguage.ThestudentmustdemonstratespeakingandreadingabilityinanAfricanlanguagefortheregionofPhDfieldwork.Thisrequirementmaybefulfilledinoneoftwoways:1.Thecompletionof9hourscourseworkinanappropriateAfricanLanguageProgramwithagradeofBorbetter(e.g.,TitleVIProgramsorAfricanlanguagecoursesofferedatHowardUniversityorelsewhere).2.Waiverofthisrequirementprovingafterconsultationthatthelanguageinquestionisthefirstlanguageofthestudentorthatmasterywasattainedthroughothermeans.Languagesmayinclude-butarenotlimitedto-Arabic,Wolof,Fulfulde,Mande,Akan,Yoruba,Igbo,Hausa,Amharic,Swahili,Zulu,etc.Anyexceptiontothefore-mentionedoptionsrequiresapprovaloftheGraduateFacultye.g.,whethertoallowKriotosatisfytheAfricanlanguagerequirementorothersimilarexamples.SubstituteforaforeignLanguageOneoftheforeignlanguagescanbesubstitutedbytwocoursesinaresearchskill(suchasacomputerlanguage,statisticalanalysis,quantitativemethods,ororalhistory)withagradeofBorbetteronboth,orbypresentingaresearchprojectinwhichtheforeignlanguageorthespecificresearchtoolisused.Thisoptionmustbeapprovedinwritinginadvancebythestudent’sadvisorandtheDGS.Iftheresearchprojectisdirectedbyafacultymemberinanotherdepartment,itmustbeapprovedbythesupervisorandoneadditionalgraduatefacultymemberselectedbytheDGS.D.QualifyingorComprehensiveExaminationsAspartoftherequirementsforthedoctorate,astudentmustpassawrittencomprehensiveexaminationinthemajorfielddesignedtotestthestudent’sspecializedknowledgeofthesubjectmatter,historiography,andimportantunresolvedproblemsordebateswithinthefield.Eachsemester,studentsplanningtotaketheexaminationshallnotifytheDGSassoonaspossible.TheDGSshallmaketheappropriatearrangementsforthecomprehensiveexamination.Theexaminationwillbegivenoncepersemesterandwillnotcoincidewithotherexaminationperiods.StudentsmaybeallowedaweekorsotosubmitthetypewrittenexaminationtotheDGS.Thefieldshallberesponsibleforevaluatingthewrittenexam.Studentsmustpasstheentireexamination,includingpartstheypreviouslymayhavefailed,withinatimespannottoexceedthreeconsecutivesemesters(exclusiveofthesummersessions).ExceptionstothisrulecanonlybemadebyaGraduateFacultyvote.Theformatofthewrittenexaminationistheresponsibilityofthemajorfield.Studentsselectquestionsaccordingtotheinstructionsandareexpectedtowriteeight-toten-pageessayresponsestoeachquestion.Theessaysshouldbewelldocumentedanddemonstratethestudent’sbreadthoflearning,depthofcriticalthinking,andcapacityforhistoricalreflection.Questionsrefertothemajorfieldsratherthanspecificcourseworkandaredesignedtoevaluatethestudent’scompetenceinthemajorfield,preparationforteachingsurveycoursesatinstitutionsofhighereducation,andgroundingin

methodologyandhistoricalinterpretation.Inordertohelpstudentsprepareforthequalifyingexamination,studentsshouldseekadditionalinformationfromtheiradvisorsandfacultyinthefieldsinwhichtheyarepreparingtotaketheirexams.Thefacultyteachinggraduatecoursesineachfieldisresponsibleforadvisingstudents,preparingthequestionsandgradingthequalifyingexamination.Thestudentisresponsibleformakingappointmentsforadvisingandfollowingupwiththefacultyinthemajorfield.Gradeswillbeexpressedintermsof“Pass,”“Fail,”“Honors,”andwillbereportedtotheDGS,whoshallnotifythestudentoftheexaminationresults.Astudentwhodoesnotreturnthewrittenexaminationwithinthetimeframerequiredwillfailthewrittenexamination.Astudentwhofailstheexaminationmaytakeasecondexamwithinthefollowingthreeconsecutivesemesters.AstudentwhofailsforthesecondtimeisdisqualifiedfromcontinuinginthePhDprogramandwillbedismissedfromtheGraduateSchool.AfterpassingthePhDComprehensiveExamination,itistheresponsibilityoftheGraduateFacultyadvisortomovethesuccessfulgraduatetoCandidacyasquicklyaspossible.E.AdmissiontoCandidacyAftersuccessfulcompletionoftheforeignlanguagesrequirement,thewritingcompetencyexam,andthequalifyingexam,theDGSwillsubmittotheGraduateSchoolaformalapplicationforadmissiontocandidacy.Nodissertationwriting(HIST500,501)creditswillbeacceptedpriortoadmissiontocandidacy.AdissertationproposalapprovedbytheDGSmustbepartoftheapplication.F.DissertationandFinalOralExaminationAspartoftherequirementsforthedoctorate,thecandidatemustsubmitadissertationrepresentinganoriginalcontributiontohistoricalresearch.Thestudentbeginshis/herdissertationformally(byregisteringinDissertationWritingcourse)onlyafteradmissiontocandidacy.AcandidatemustsecureformalapprovalofthedissertationtopicfromtheGraduateFaculty.AlistofproceduresforgainingapprovalmustbeobtainedfromtheDGSandonlineatthewebsitefortheGraduateSchool.ThesestipulatethatthestudentshouldfirstestablishanagreementwithaGraduateFacultymembertoserveasthedissertationsupervisor.Then,inconsultationwiththesupervisor,thecandidatewillrequesttwoadditionalgraduatefacultymemberstoserveasreaders.Thedissertationsupervisorandthetworeadersshallconstitutethecandidate’sDissertationCommittee,whichwillguidethefinalformulationoftheproposalaswellasitsexecutionuponapproval.ThecompositionoftheDissertationCommitteeisalsosubjecttotheapprovaloftheGraduateFaculty.Afterformalapprovalofthecandidate’sdissertationbytheDissertationCommitteeandaspartoftherequirementsforthedoctorate,thecandidatemustpassafinaloralexaminationtodefendargumentspresentedinthedissertationandtoshowproficiencyinthegeneralfieldofresearchandrelatedareasofstudy.Apaneloffiveshalladministertheexamination,includingonepersonfromoutsidetheHowardUniversitycommunity.AtleastthreeoftheothersmustbehistoryGraduateFaculty,oneofwhomshallbethedissertationsupervisor.TheDGS,theDepartmentChair,andtheDeanoftheGraduateSchoolofArtsand

PrograminHistoryandtheGraduateSchool.SeeRuleandRegulationsandtheStudentCodeofConductformoredetailedinformationonstudentresponsibilities,rights,andprocedures.CoursePerformanceAstudentmayearnnomorethantwogradesbelow“B”ortheywillbedismissedfromtheGraduateSchool.Astudentwhodemonstratesaninabilitytoperformsatisfactorilyatthegraduatelevelshouldberecommendedfordismissal.GradePointAverageinMajorFieldStudentsmustmaintainagradeaverageof3.0orbetterinthemajorfield.Studentsreadmittedtotheprogrammustmaintainagradepointaverageof3.0orbetterinthemajorfieldsubsequenttotheirreadmission.Anystudentfailingtomaintainsuchanaveragewillbedroppedfromtheprogram.CumulativeGradePointAverageintheMAProgramAstudentwhoaccumulatesmorethanten(10)credithoursofgradesbelow“B”shallbedismissedfromtheGraduateSchool.CumulativeGradePointAverageinthePhDProgramAstudentwhoaccumulatesmorethanten(15)credithoursofgradesbelow“B”(inclusiveoftheMAdegree)shallbedismissedfromtheGraduateSchool.ProceduresforDismissalAstudentwhofallsbelowthe3.00GPAshallbewarnedandinformedbytheGraduateSchoolandmustraisethequalitypointindexto3.00inthenexttwotermsinresidence.StudentsfailingtodosowillbedismissedfromtheGraduateSchool.CourseViabilityCreditforcoursespursuedmorethansevenandlessthantenyears,priortotheterminwhichthestudentpresentsherself/himselfforthefinalexamination,canbecountedtowardthefulfillmentofdegreerequirementsonlyiftheyarerestoredasdescribedinthisparagraphwiththeapprovaloftheGraduateFacultyandtheDeanoftheGraduateSchool.Inorderforacoursetoberestoredunderthisparagraph,thestudentmustpassanexaminationadministeredexpresslyforthepurposeofrestorationofcreditsinthecourseconcernedoracomprehensiveexaminationinthefieldinwhichthecoursefalls.

XIIAPPEALOFACADEMICDECISIONSAccordingtotheRulesandRegulationsoftheGraduateSchool,thefollowingprocedureisapplicablein
