Our two year award-winning Graduate Development Programme will provide you with a strong foundation for a successful career at Mace. We invest heavily in graduates to develop the top talent we need to lead and deliver projects of the future. You will take on responsibility in live project environments and your learning will be supported by a comprehensive development programme.
When did your career start at Mace?
I completed a summer placement in a trainee commercial manager role (QS contracting) at one of Mace’s prestigious projects. The commercial role is more hands on and site based compared to the cost consultancy role (PQS) so I was able to develop and improve my technical construction knowledge.
What did you enjoy most about working for Mace?
The culture is so unique so I decided to return after graduation in a cost consultancy role. Whilst being a worldwide company, you have the benefits of being able to work on large scale projects and work abroad. Even with the size of Mace you feel like a valued individual with plenty of opportunity. You will never get lost in the masses and accomplishments are widely celebrated throughout the company to really encourage the sense of a team environment.
What are your main responsibilities as a graduate?
At Mace you very much hit the ground running! When I first started I was working on three projects. After a year I am now working on seven projects
with both public sector clients and schools. All are at different stages in the project lifecycle making my role varied. In any one day I can be doing anything from working on bids for new projects, conducting valuations to closing out final accounts.
What excites you about your role?
The astounding level of opportunity and encouragement I receive. Working towards my chartership, completing the graduate training and furthering my career makes for excellent learning opportunities. No two projects are alike. Each will come with their own challenges and when you start to apply your knowledge from previous experiences you can really feel your knowledge and confidence grow.
How would you describe the support you get towards achieving professional qualifications?
I am working towards my RICS qualification. There is a large level of support through a number of networks including RICS assessors. We have revision sessions twice a month as well as one-to-one meetings with MRICS & FRICS colleagues to ask questions, practise interview techniques and prepare for our final assessment.

SUMMER PLACEMENTS
I have been working within the commercial team on site during my placement. Day to day my role has included understanding the process of valuations, issuing instructions and requests for change, meetings with clients and sub-contractors, assisting with payments and site visits.
The aspects I have most enjoyed working for Mace have been to understand how different roles coordinate within the contracting side. I have met lots of different people and been fortunate for them to show me their responsibilities and involvement within the project. I have been given support when needed and everyone has taken the time to answer questions.
I would highly recommend students to do a summer placement at Mace. There are many aspects of jobs you do not learn about at University and it gives you the opportunity to find out what aspects of the role you enjoy.
10 week summer placements are available for first, second and penultimate year students. You will work on challenging projects throughout your placement and your line manager will give you clear responsibilities to develop your skills and experience. Strong performance on a summer placement can lead to further employment and sponsorship opportunities.

Subject Quantity Surveying (BSc)
Role Commercial Management (QS) – Summer placement What was your role and responsibilities
during your industrial placement year?
I worked as a trainee construction manager on the Café Royal, a grade II listed 5* hotel on Regent Street in central London. I started off shadowing before I was given the mock up room to manage. I was later given responsibility for the fit out of the 160 bedrooms. This shows how Mace allows you to progress and take on responsibility if you are capable. Doing a placement year increased my knowledge and gave me an insight into working life within the industry. I was also offered sponsorship for my final year at university.
12 month industrial placement opportunities are available to undergraduates looking for a year in industry as part of their sandwich course. On the job learning, training and development and chartership support are all available during the placement year. If you perform well during your placement year you will be offered a place on the Graduate Development Programme subject to achieving a 2.1. Sponsorship will also be offered in the final year of your degree.
