NOTE: To be eligible for scholarships or bursaries, students must meet all application deadlines, and audition during the advertised in-person audition dates, or ensure that the Faculty receives a high quality audition DVD prior to the end of this

Students wishing to study at the Graduate Level at the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music beginning in September 2013 (or January 2014) must normally hold a four-year music degree from an institution recognized by the Faculty of Graduate Studies; however, some exceptions do apply. For specific information, refer to the Faculty of Music Supplemental Regulations - http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/admin/532.htm 1. Complete TWO applications and send all documents to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. All supplemental materials

including composition portfolios, conducting analyses, and DVD auditions should be sent directly to the Faculty of Music. a. The Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music Graduate Application, which should include a personal essay, repertoire

listing and a current curriculum vita, as well as a DVD and score analysis (for conducting) or portfolio and recording (for composition). Please provide your referees with a copy of the attached Faculty of Music Letter to Support Application for Admission.

b. The University of Manitoba Application for Graduate Admission, along with the application fee and all related documentation. References should be the Faculty of Music Letter to Support Application for Admission.

2. Auditions and interviews are scheduled for February 1-2, 2013 at the Music Building on the Fort Garry Campus, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Alternate date is February 23, 2013. If you are applying from out of province and cannot attend one of these dates in person, you may, with permission, apply via high-quality DVD. Audio only submissions are not acceptable. 3. A Theory diagnostic assessment will be written just prior to the start of classes in September 2013. Unsatisfactory results on this test may require students to do remedial work as a co-requisite or pre-requisite to the graduate program; such work, if required, will not count for credit toward the Master of Music degree.

International applicants (excluding citizens/residents of the US) requiring Study Permits to enter Canada should submit their applications and required documents at least nine (9) months before the desired date of admission to allow enough time for processing of the required visa. Students requiring campus residence should apply immediately for housing.

Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music Graduate Application All auditions will include an interview to explore the applicant’s professional goals and suitability to fulfill those goals. This interview is weighted as 25% of the application process. Interviews may be conducted via speaker phone if the candidate is unable to attend in person. All applicants are to submit a listing of repertoire and a current curriculum vita that includes details of performance experience. Performance Candidates:

Students may apply in the following specialty areas within the performance concentration: Standard Orchestral, Wind Band and Jazz Instruments, Voice, Piano, Collaborative Piano, Classical Guitar

All applicants are required to audition with a program of works representing a variety of historical periods and exhibiting a variety of contrasting styles. The program for all auditions should be of sufficient length to allow for this. All pieces must be accompanied. It is your responsibility to find an accompanist (with the exception of jazz where a rhythm section will be provided) - you may contact us for a listing of local accompanists. The audition may involve sight-reading/playing. In the case of audition by electronic media, sight-reading and sight-playing abilities will be evaluated during a follow-up audition prior to the start of classes for those students successful in being admitted to the Faculty of Music Graduate Program. Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Instruments: A program of works representing a variety of historical periods and contrasting styles. 20-30 minutes in total Voice: Two arias (one opera, one oratorio) and three art songs in contrasting languages and styles, with at least one in English. 20-30 minutes in total String Instruments: Please see individual area requirements, attached Piano: A minimum of two contrasting movements of a classical sonata, one of which is in sonata form; A romantic work and a minimum of two other works chosen from baroque, impressionist and/or 20th century works. The audition program of 20-30 minutes in total should be approved in advance by the Area Chair. Collaborative Piano: *Instrumental: one movement of any Beethoven violin sonata; one movement of any romantic duo sonata; and Kreisler’s Caprice Viennois to be performed without rehearsal *Vocal (all to be played in original keys): Schubert - Gretchen am Spinnrade or Auf dem Wasseer zu singen; Strauss - Allerseelen or Zueignun; Debussy – Il pleure dans mon Coeur or Faure – Clair de lune; Barber – one selection from At Saint Patrick’s Purgatory, St. Ita’s Vision, The Heavenly Banquet, The Praises of God, or The Desire for Hermitage; and any Mozart aria (not including Recitative) to be sung and played by the candidate Solo: Any piano solo of your choice, approximately 7-10 minutes in length – this can be a short piece or movement from any larger work

Desautels Faculty of Music Graduate Application Jazz Instruments: Please see individual area requirements, attached Composition Candidates: Applicants to the composition area are to submit a portfolio of works demonstrating their ability to work in a variety of art music genres (orchestral, chamber, solo, vocal, dramatic, electroacoustics, etc.) Instrumental submissions should include both scores and recordings. Applicants must also submit a curriculum vita detailing their experience both in the area of composition and in the field of music in general. In addition, they are to include an essay describing their particular interests/goals in their field, and discussing what they would like to gain from their study at the University of Manitoba’s Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music. Conducting Candidates: Applicants to the conducting area are required to submit a current curriculum vita, a preliminary DVD of their rehearsal and performance conducting (with the camera facing the conductor), and a list of repertoire they have conducted both in rehearsal and in performance. They must also submit an analysis of a piece of music from a theoretical/conducting standpoint (form; harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic structure; technical challenges for the players; technical and musical challenges for the conductor). Applicants should consult with the appropriate faculty member regarding the specific piece to be analyzed. Conducting applicants will be required to conduct two pieces in rehearsal with a university ensemble appropriate to the desired area of specialization. Repertoire chosen for the audition must represent contrasting styles, and be approved by the conducting faculty prior to the audition. The conducting audition will normally last 20-30 minutes. In addition, INSTRUMENTAL conducting applicants will be required to: coach a chamber ensemble (20-30 minutes), perform selections of their choice on their main instrument or voice, and display proficiency in sight singing and rhythmic reading. CHORAL conducting applicants will be required to perform vocal selections of their choice and display proficiency in sight singing and keyboard score reading.

Graduate Application JAZZ AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

(A rhythm section will be provided by the Faculty)

Drummers, Horn, Piano, Guitar and Bass Players: You will be required to perform 3 tunes with the rhythm section provided: 1. A medium tempo Blues selection. Play melody and 2 improvised choruses. 2. An up - tempo "Rhythm Changes" selection. Play melody and 2 improvised choruses 3. A Jazz standard of your choice Play melody and 2 improvised choruses Rhythm section players must “comp” for a soloist. 4. Sight read a short piece provided by the panel. You must provide 3 copies of the charts of the music you select to perform. Vocalists: You will be required to sing 3 tunes with the rhythm section provided: 1. An up - tempo jazz standard with a swing or Latin feel. 2. A medium tempo blues, with 2 improvised choruses. 3. A ballad of your choice. You must provide 3 copies of the charts of the music you select to perform (in your key). GRADUATE STRING INSTRUMENTS Audition Requirements

VIOLIN: MEMORIZATION PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED.

1. Bach: Two movements from any Sonata or Partita for violin solo 2. Any virtuoso work for violin and piano or violin solo 3. First or second, and third movements from any major violin concerto (including Mozart #4 and #5; Bruch

DOUBLE BASS: MEMORIZATION PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED.

1. Two contrasting pieces of applicant’s choice. 2. Three orchestra excerpts: by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart or Strauss. 3. One major scale, one harmonic minor scale, one minor scale of choice in two or three octaves. 4. Sight-reading may be required.

GUITAR: MEMORIZATION PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED.

1. The first movement from any J.S. Bach suites for Lute or Fugue BMV 1001 or BMV 998. If you choose the Prelude from Suite BMV 996, you must play it Presto.

2. First movement of a major work (concerto, sonata, suite, etc). for guitar solo or guitar and piano. 3. One piece representing a major 20th/21st Century work for guitar.
