FCPS Portrait of a Graduate (POG) Skills

A goal of FCPS is to provide opportunities for students to demonstrate learning in authentic ways and support students in the development of skills that employers are seeking for the workforce and are a necessity

to be successful in the virtual learning environment and day-to-day life.

How Parents Can Support POG Skillshttps://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/potrait-graduate/resources

Consider telling your child when they are demonstrating a skill at home or in a social setting, e.g.,

“During soccer practice today, when you missed the goal you didn’t give up and kept trying to get the ball back to score.” (Goal Directed and Resilient Indiv.)

How will we know what our students have learned?

Balanced Assessment Approach

• Projects• Rubrics specific to

assignments• Tests & Quizzes• Performance Tasks

Student understanding is assessed in multiple ways. Each assessment type provides information to guide and inform instruction to meet the needs of students.

Parent/Teacher Communication

• Phone Call• Email• Glows and Grows

Conference

Teachers remain in contact with parents throughout each quarter to share and monitor student progress.

Elementary Progress Report

• Achievement Grade• Effort Grade• Life, Work & Citizenship

The progress report reflects the student’s current level of understanding and demonstration of knowledge and skills.

Kindergarten

One way we assess student learning is to ask them to tell us the name of a letter or number shown. We typically complete this type of assessment individually or in small groups during small group instruction.

Page 10: Grading and Reporting in the Elementary School Back to

First Grade

White boards are one way first grade will assess student learning. For example, students will be asked to show a number on a whiteboard. They will be able to show their thinking in a variety of ways such as pictures, numbers, or words.

Page 11: Grading and Reporting in the Elementary School Back to

Second Grade

Students will use their notebooks/journals to demonstrate their understanding in math, reading, writing, social studies and science. After children respond in their journals they will be asked to show the teacher their response. They will turn on their camera briefly to show/share.

Page 12: Grading and Reporting in the Elementary School Back to

Third Grade

Pear Deck is one way third grade will assess student learning. For example students can

label the life cycle of a ladybug. Students could also draw and label the lifecycle using

the interactive feature of Pear Deck.

Annotating is a strategy students can use to engage with text, synthesize new thinking, and ask questions to build background knowledge. Teachers can use students’ annotations to see what strategies they use to access meaning, diagnose what readers need, and assess their understanding of the content.

Teachers can make annotating more engaging by grouping students on a shared Google document to work collaboratively. Text is placed in the left side of a two-column chart. Students can highlight words and phrases in the text, and write their annotations in the right column. They can use the chat feature in the document to discuss the reading if they are working at the same time. They could also insert comments with questions for the other group members to answer independently. This adds a social component to the task.Source

Google Forms are another great way to gather information and assess understanding. Students click a link (through Google Classroom) to access a digital survey. The Google Form can accept multiple choice, checkbox, short answer, and paragraph responses. Once submitted, teachers can autograde responses or see responses in a spreadsheet format to grade. No paper required!

FCPS & State Assessments - ElementaryWhere allowable and practical, assessments are being shifted to an online at-home format to reduce in-person assessments.

Some assessment information is ‘to be determined’ based on FCPS operational status (fall/winter/spring 2020-21).

Procedures and safety protocols are followed for all in-person assessments to ensure physical distancing and cleaning practices meet current health department and division guidance.
