Course Outline

How do living organisms grow? Why do antibiotics cure some infections but not others? Think of all the organisms on Earth. They all need energy in order to perform all the life’s activities and they all depend on each other for food. Think of all the natural cycles that take place on our planet and support all kinds of life. This course will allow students to gain knowledge and understanding about life’s functions and processes.

Course Learning Outcomes

§ Students will learn that all living things must be able to obtain food and use resources, grow, reproduce, and maintain stable internal conditions while living in a constantly changing environment.

§ Students will understand that almost every organism has the same basic needs: water, air, a place to live, and food. This latter is made of elements that combine together to form proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, ATP, and nucleic acids.

§ Students will find out that all living things fit into one of three domains: Bacteria, Archaea, or Eukarya. The first two domains consist of the oldest forms of life on Earth.

§ Students will discover that virus and bacteria can cause diseases. Bacteria play an important role for the environment and for people. Viruses are not considered living because they cannot reproduce on their own.

§ Students will learn that millions of species of animals, plants, and microorganisms are alive today. Although different species might look dissimilar, the unity among organisms becomes apparent from an analysis of internal structures, and the similarity of their chemical processes.

§ Students will understand that populations of organisms can be categorized by the functions they serve in an ecosystem. Plants and some microorganisms are

Page 9: Grade 7L Course Outlines - IB-PYP · Holt Science & Technology: Cells, Microorganisms, Fungi and Plants. Holt Science &Technology: Animals Holt Science & Technology: Environmental

producers- they make their own food. All animals, including humans, are consumers, which obtain their food by eating other organisms. Decomposers, primarily bacteria and fungi, are consumers that use waste materials and dead organisms for food.

§ Students will find out that millions of species of animals are alive today. Although different species might look dissimilar, the unity among organisms becomes apparent from an analysis of internal structures, the similarity of their chemical processes, and the evidence of common ancestry.

§ Students will learn that behavior is one kind of response an organism can make to an internal or environmental stimulus. Behavioral response is a set of actions determined in part by heredity and in part from experience.

§ Students will discover that an organism’s behavior evolves through adaptations to its environment. How a species moves, obtains food, reproduces, and responds to danger are based in the species’ evolutionary history.

§ Student will learn how to diagram and explain the importance of all the cycles of nature to living things. They will be able to describe the process of succession and contrast primary and secondary successions. How mature communities develop from non- existing and pre-existing communities.

§ Student will distinguish between abiotic factors and biotic factors in biomes. Identify seven land biomes on Earth. They will be able to list abiotic factors and zones that shape the marine and freshwater ecosystems and describe five marine ecosystems and two wetland ecosystems.

Course Outline

The term physical science involves the study of matter and its states. From solids to liquids, and then to gases, matter is studied holistically in relation to the scientific methods and measurements. Elements and compounds are studied in terms of their physical and chemical properties in addition to mixtures that are considered totally different substances. Everything in the world is made of atoms. But what are atoms and how were they discovered?

Course Learning Outcomes

§ Students will learn that physical science is the study of matter and energy. They will understand that physical science relates to the world around them.

§ Students learn that scientific knowledge changes over time, and that new scientific knowledge often leads to new technology and that new technology can lead to new scientific discoveries.

§ Students will discover the importance of the International System of Units. They will learn about volume and mass, derived units -such as density, area-and consider safety rules and safety icons.

§ Students will understand that matter is anything that has mass and volume. § Students will find out that a substance has characteristic properties, such as

density, a boiling point, and solubility, all of which are independent of the amount of sample.

§ Students will learn that matter can undergo physical and chemical changes and that during chemical changes, new substances are formed.

Page 12: Grade 7L Course Outlines - IB-PYP · Holt Science & Technology: Cells, Microorganisms, Fungi and Plants. Holt Science &Technology: Animals Holt Science & Technology: Environmental

§ Students will explore the three common states of matter and the characteristics of each state. They will also learn gases are affected by volume, pressure, and temperature.

§ Students will understand that matter changes from state to another and these changes are explained in terms of matter gaining or losing energy.

§ Students will understand that chemical elements do not break down during normal laboratory reactions involving such treatments as heating, exposure to electric current, or reactions with acids.

§ Students will discover that there are more than 100 known elements that combine in a multitude of ways to produce compounds, which account for the living and nonliving substances that we encounter.

§ Students will learn that a mixture of substances often can be separated into the original substances using one or more of the characteristic properties.

§ Students will explore the development of the atomic theory over the years, from the pre-scientific ideas of Democritus through Dalton, Thomson, and Rutherford to modern “electron cloud” theory.

§ Students will discover the parts of the atom and the subatomic particles –protons, electrons, neutrons.

Assignments and Methods of Assessment

The final grade is a combination of the class participation, activity assessments, and the conduct portions of the class.

Your grade will be determined by your performance in daily class activities and skills tests.

• Grading Policy: o Skills evaluation: 50% (of the final grade). These evaluations are affected by

your participation; the less the participation is the less the evaluation percentage is: § Ex: If you fully participate in the sessions (100%) - Skills test will remain

50 % of the total grade. § Ex: If participation 50% - Skills test 25% of the total grade. § Ex: No Participation – you will not be allowed to participate in the skills test

o Daily Mark: 50% (of the final grade) § Each student will be evaluated daily based on the following criteria:

Page 23: Grade 7L Course Outlines - IB-PYP · Holt Science & Technology: Cells, Microorganisms, Fungi and Plants. Holt Science &Technology: Animals Holt Science & Technology: Environmental

- Daily attendance. - Arrives to class shortly after the bell. - Changes promptly. - Be prepared for class – Have appropriate sports outfit. - Plays in a safe manner, and is aware of the safety of others. - Does the complete warm up: the run, dynamic stretch, and static

stretch. - Practices the demonstrated skills and tries to incorporate them into

game play. - Gives 100% for all activities that we do. - Is quiet and cooperative when the teacher is talking. - Plays by the rules. - Displays a positive attitude and respect everyone in the class. - Does not argue or criticize other students or the teacher. - Is thoughtful and makes an effort to include everyone in the activity. - Demonstrates composure and self-control when they lose or make

mistakes. - Shares equipment. - Treats equipment with respect. - Refrain from unsafe play such as pushing, shoving, grabbing etc.

Based on the above criteria a daily mark is given. When any of the above criteria are not met, marks will be deducted based on the following:

§ No participation = 0 out of 10 § No PE outfit = 0 out of 10 § Outfit different than the school’s = maximum 6 out of 10 § Late for class = maximum 7 or 8 out of 10 § Effort= Depending on severity § Behavior= Depending on severity

What should be done if a student is unable to participate in Physical Education?

§ A note is to be brought to class, signed by a parent/guardian/school nurse, stating the student’s medical condition and telling what they can or can’t do.

§ After an extended period of inactivity (more than 2 times), a doctor’s note that confirms the student’s limitations will be required.

§ If a note is presented, the student will be excused from the daily grade.
