About the CompositionAlbion Sketches was commissioned by WorldStrides OnStage and is dedicated to the thousands of directors who have traveled to a WorldStrides event over the past thirty-five years. Worldstrides OnStage offers performance experiences that fuel the passion of performing artists of all ages with breathtaking productions, prestigious events, and premier venues. They provide performance opportunities all over the world where debuts are made, mentors are met, co-stars become lifelong friends, and inspirations build bight futures.
The name "Albion" is of ancient Greek origin and is the oldest known name for the islands of Great Britain. The British Grenadiers is a traditional marching song for British and Canadian military units. The melody dates from the seventeenth century and was first used as the Regimental Quick March of the Royal Artillery in 1716. Loch Lomond (The Bonnie Banks O’ Loch Lomond) is named after the largest lake (or "Loch") in Scotland and was first published in 1841. The Double Jig is written in ? time and usually features two groups of eighth notes per measure played in a brisk and lively style. The single jig may be written in ? or E (called a “slide") and features a rhythmic pattern of a quarter note followed by a quarter note, also played in a lively dance-style.
About the ComposerAs a major composer of instrumental and vocal music, Carl Strommen is recognized as one of the most often-performed composers of educational music in the United States.
A graduate of the City College of New York, Mr. Strommen was the Director of Bands at the Mamaroneck Public Schools, Mamaroneck, NY for many years. He is a member of the faculty at the CW Post campus of Long Island University where he teaches orchestration and arranging. Recognized by ASCAP as a consistent writer in the Standard Awards category, Mr. Strommen is also active as a clinician, lecturer and guest conductor.
