Grace Notes VOLUME 154 RYE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ▪ 882 BOSTON POST ROAD ▪ RYE ▪ NY ▪10580 NOVEMBER 2015
It has been an exciting fall at Rye Presbyterian Church as children
have returned to Sunday School, youth ministries have begun their
meetings, we’ve welcomed Jason Charneski into our midst, and
we’ve engaged in learning more about our Imagine Initiative. On
Sunday, October 18, we came together for Commitment Sunday
for both the Imagine Initiative and our Annual Stewardship Cam-
paign. As of the end of October, we have received 142 pledges for
a total amount of $3,279,000 for the Imagine Initiative. This is
78% of our $4.2 million goal. While we still have a ways to go,
this is very exciting. I hope that you will join us on Sunday, No-
vember 8, following worship, for Celebration Sunday, a festive
finale to the beginning of the Imagine Initiative! This marks the
beginning of our move from dreaming, planning, and resourcing to
Imagine as reality.
And so it is with great excitement that I
share with you one of the new mission
initiatives that is coming to our church
because of the Imagine Initiative, which
will fund this new ministry for its first two
years. It is the COMING HOME pro-
gram which is an extension of our long-
standing Prison Ministry. In collaboration
with The Beck Institute on Religion and
Poverty at Fordham University Graduate
School of Social Service, Coming Home
seeks to empower those who are returning
to the community from incarceration.
Coming Home is based on a well-established model with a track
record of success and over a thousand graduates in the New York
Metropolitan area over the past two decades.
Participants work with facilitators and accompaniers* to support
personal healing and growth, skill development, and reintegration
into the community. This 18-week program pairs RPC congregants
with the formerly incarcerated to help them transition back to their
communities. Sessions will be on Thursday evenings from 6:00-
8:30 p.m. beginning in January. Key to Coming Home is learning
life skills, setting goals, and sharing personal stories in a safe, sup-
portive community.
Unlike our current Prison Ministries, which are limited by the
number of volunteers who can go into each of the correctional fa-
cilities at any given time, our Coming Home ministry will offer
various volunteer ministry opportunities to our congregation.
These include: Accompaniers* - congregants who are paired with
participants, supporting, encouraging, and journeying with them
through the program. Guest Speakers – presenters are needed to
teach networking, job-searching, and other life skills. And Cooks
and Hosts – each evening begins with a meal prepared and served
by RPC congregants who share table fellowship before the night’s
program begins.
I invite and encourage you to join us on Thursday, November 5,
at 7:30 p.m. in the Westminster Room to learn more about this new
extension of our Prison Ministry. Come and Imagine how God can
be at work among us!
Journeying Together!
* While some Coming Home programs use the term mentors, we will use the term
accompaniers. We understand the ministry of accompaniment as walking togeth-
er in a solidarity that practices interdependence and mutuality. The basis for this accompaniment, or what the New Testament calls koinonia, is found in the God-
human relationship in which God accompanies us in Jesus Christ through the
Holy Spirit.

Join in on November 8
for
a festive finale to the beginning
of the Imagine Initiative!
As we move from dreaming, planning, and resourcing to Imagine as reality, we’ll announce our pledging progress to date and
celebrate with a special coffee hour following worship.
A heartfelt thank you to all who have sent in your pledges already – you have stepped up with faith, generosity and great hope
for the future!
As of the end of October here’s where we stand:
Imagine: 142 pledges totaling $3,279,000 – we are 78% there!
Annual Stewardship for 2016: 153 pledges for $799,000—up 3.3%!
It’s not too late to be included! If you did not receive pledge cards for both Imagine and Annual Stewardship, please contact
the church office, or pledge online here.
A very special thank you to the Steering Team of the Imagine Initiative for their creativity, imagination, energy,
and dedication to making all we imagine become reality.

Coming Home, Adult Education
The first new program to be funded ini-
tially from the Imagine Initiative will
start in January. Called “Coming
Home,” it is an exciting broadening of
RPC’s long-standing prison ministry
which will enable dozens in our congre-
gation to participate in this life-changing
work.
We will be working with the people
recently released from prison and
“coming home” to a world far different
from the one they left many years be-
fore. The program’s objective is to work
closely with program participants
(“returning citizens”) to ease that transi-
tion and provide ongoing support and
life skills to help them cope with change,
communicate effectively, build relation-
ships, and tell their stories in a safe envi-
ronment.
Starting with a meal provided by
members of the congregation, to which
anyone in the congregation is also invit-
ed to break bread with the returning citi-
zens, there is a time for reflection, per-
haps on a reading one of the participants
has prepared, and discussion.
After the meal has ended, we all clear
the tables and the returning citizens par-
ticipate in a weekly workshop on a wide
range of subjects, including goal-setting,
building healthy relationships, time and
money management, employment, and
many others. Workshops are led by a
facilitator from Coming Home and by
speakers with relevant experience from
the congregation or from the outside.
Other workshops focus on participants
developing, telling, and sharing their life
stories.
In addition, each participant is ulti-
mately paired with someone from the
congregation who provides help with
goal-setting and is an effective listener
for the participant to connect with.
These people are not intended to do
things for participants, but to enable
them to build their own life skills.
Anyone interested in learning more
about this dynamic program is invited to
a meeting on Thursday, November 5, at
7:30 p.m. in the Westminster Room.
There we will explain in more detail the
various ways you may become involved
and have a chance to hear from former
participants from other churches and
how Coming Home has changed their
lives. Please join us to see what role
YOU might like to fill.

Book Study . . .
Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the
American Elite and the
Way to a Meaningful Life
Tuesdays, 7:30 p.m., in the Library,
November 3, 10, 17
Dan Love leads this thought-provoking book study based on
former Yale professor William Deresiesicz’s book that ex-
plores the question—are high schools and colleges of our
young people turning out conformists without a compass?

PPARABLESARABLES FROMFROM THETHE BBACKSIDEACKSIDE
Sunday mornings, November 8-22 9:00-9:45 a.m., Westminster Room
Using J. Ellsworth Kalas’ book, we’ll gain new insights into Jesus’ parables as approached through the “back side”; though a unique starting point, a creative retelling, a new “lens,” or the eyes of a minor character.
11/01 The Prodigal Son, Luke 14:1-32 11/08 Laborers in the Vineyard, Matthew 20:1-15 11/15 Parable of the Talents, Matthew 25:14-30 11/22 Parable of the Soils, Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23
Adult Education—New Beginnings
Two exciting new programs began in
late October and continue through much
of November. Parables from the Back
Side debuted October 25 and continues
each Sunday morning through Novem-
ber 22, from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. in the
Westminster Room. Based on a book by
J. Ellsworth Kalas, these programs will
look at well-known parables from a
unique starting point, so we can find
fresh meaning in them by looking at
them through a new lens.
In addition, starting October 27, Dan
Love will lead a Book Study for four
weeks on Tuesday evenings starting at
7:30 p.m. in the Library. The thought-
provoking book we will examine is Ex-
cellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the
American Elite and the Way to a Mean-
ingful Life. While a mouthful, the title
captures the concern of the book’s au-
thor, Prof. William Deresiewicz of Yale,
that the educational system seems to turn
out conformists without a compass or a
sense of purpose. This promises to be a
challenging discussion of a vital element
in the education of our young people.
In addition to the above, the ongoing
Adult Education programs will continue:
Women’s Bible Study every other
Saturday morning at 9:15 a.m. in the
Library
Men’s Bible Study twice a month on
Sunday evenings at 8:00 p.m. in the
Library.
Wednesday Morning Bible study
every other week at 8:45 a.m. in the
Library.
Women’s Discipleship Group Tues-
day mornings from 9:00 to 10:30
a.m.
Three T’s—the Third Tuesday of
each month at 10:00 a.m. in the Li-
brary.
We hope you will
take advantage of
these many oppor-
tunities for deepen-
ing our faith and
learning and grow-
ing together. Click here

From Jason
Charneski
I look forward to
my first Advent and
Christmas at RPC.
With this in mind, please speak with,
call, or e-mail me if you have interest in
joining the Chancel Choir for Cantata
Sunday, Christmas Eve…or Both! The Gloria, by Antonio Vivaldi, will
be the major work offered in worship on
Cantata Sunday, December 13. The
choir will be accompanied by an orches-
tra of nine players (2 violins, viola,
‘cello, bass, oboe, trumpet, bassoon, and
harpsichord). I ask that interested per-
sons be available to rehearse during the
choir’s regular post-worship sessions (at
11:30 a.m.) on Sundays, beginning No-
vember 8, and for a rehearsal, with the
orchestra, from 7:00–9:00 p.m., on
Thursday, December 10.
A rehearsal specific to the music to be
offered at the 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
services on Christmas Eve will be held
after worship on Sunday, December 20,
from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Warm-up
for the 11:00 p.m. service on Christmas
Eve (with full choir) will begin at 10:00
p.m. The offertory anthem for the full
choir will be the King’s Singers’ ar-
rangement of “Do You Hear What I
Hear.” This is an opportunity for college
students and others who might be home
for the holidays. Jason

Sunday School
Sunday School is going great, but how is
it already November?! This month we
will continue to match the lectionary,
and our focus will be the gospel of Mark,
specifically chapters 12 and 13. The kids
are learning so much; in addition to the
Bible stories, we are also teaching them
the Lord’s Prayer, so be sure to go over
it with them during the week!
On November 15, the children will be
participating in Singing Our Faith, with
Lisa Rawson, Children’s Choir Director.
On November 22, the kids will have
Children’s Chapel instead of their usual
Sunday School classes. Each month,
chapel focuses on a different aspect of
worship; this month we will focus on
Communion! November 29 is another
holiday weekend and the kids will as-
semble in the Westminster Room to
make Advent Wreaths.
Happy November, everyone!

chance to see how faith can impact
our lives.

members who have joined RPC this
month!
Saturday, November 28, we will join
the deacons to help serve a meal for
the Carver Center’s Dinner-At-Noon
program, and parents are welcome to
join their teens.

God of the seasons, there is a time
for everything; there is a time for
dying and a time for rising. We need
courage to enter into the transfor-
mation process.
God of autumn, the trees are saying
goodbye to their green, letting go of what has been. We, too, have
our moments of surrender, with all their insecurity and risk. Help us
to let go when we need to do so.
God of fallen leaves lying in colored patterns on the ground, our
lives have their own patterns. As we see the patterns of our own
growth, may we learn from them.
God of misty days and harvest moon nights, there is always the
dimension of mystery and wonder in our lives. We always need to
recognize your power-filled presence. May we gain strength from
this.
God of harvest wagons and fields of ripened grain, many gifts of
growth lie within the season of our surrender. We must wait for
harvest in faith and hope. Grant us patience when we do not see the
blessings.
God of geese going south for another season, your wisdom enables
us to know what needs to be left behind and what needs to be carried
into the future. We yearn for insight and vision.
God of flowers touched with frost and windows wearing white
designs, may your love keep our hearts from growing cold in the
empty seasons.
God of life, you believe in us, you enrich us, you entrust us with
the freedom to choose life. For all this, we are grateful.

Rye Presbyterian Nursery School
Greetings to the RPC Community
from Kristin Bassett Kumar and
Emma Whitman
Come join us at Rye Presbyterian
Nursery School for the 2016-2017
school year! In-house registration will be
held on November 16th through Novem-
ber 18th from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in
the Westminster Room. All current stu-
dents, new siblings of returning families,
and church members should register at
this time to guarantee their placement.
All church members are part of our In
-House registration. If you are a new
family please call 914-967-2073 or
email [email protected] to set up a
tour. Rye Presbyterian Nursery School
offers morning and afternoon programs
for two, three and four year olds and a
morning five year old class. Our morn-
ing and afternoon sessions have the same
goals and activities at each of their re-
spective age levels. We look forward to
hearing from you soon!
Our annual “Swing into Fall” fund-
raiser was held on Saturday, October
3rd, in the Assembly Room. Parents
showed great support for RPNS at the
cocktail party and silent auction. Fami-
lies purchased items for their child’s
classroom from our online “Giving
Tree.” This year, each teaching team
donated a fun after-school event for the
children. Parents signed up for their
children to attend an event with their
current or past teachers! These parties
included a walk to Longford’s, a Hal-
loween Sing-a-Long, a Tie Dye Tee-
Shirt Party, a Puppet Making and Story-
telling Gathering, and many more! All
the proceeds from these teacher parties
will benefit the scholarship fund at
RPNS.
