Maundy Thursday

Sharing a Meal and Worship Together at the Supper Table

In the lower level at Grace.

Thursday, April 18th, 6:00-7:00 p.m.

This year we are going to enter the story of Jesus passion on Thursday night by sharing, albeit differently, the evening of the Passover Meal that Jesus was celebrating with his disciples the night before his crucifixion. That Meal was a festival in Jerusalem when the Jews came together to remember God’s rescue and provision for them in the story of the Exodus. We will not be trying to imitate or mimic the Passover Meal. But, we do want to pick up the themes and some of the ritual for the purposes of remembering that their worship of God’s work for them in the past and hope for the future is that which also lives within us. We do that trusting that Jesus, God among us to save, has come and in our still hurting world we look forward to ‘that day’ when all that God hopes for our world will be realized and we will live in Christ’s peace together with God and each other. We’ve tried to organize the service to include all of us, children and adults. There will be ritual which is not ours but will ‘involve us’ in the story of the Exodus, a lot of participation, a meal as well as words and music together. And, we will be trying to be very intergenerational, including the children in numbers of ways so that they will ‘enjoy’ being there with us. We will not move into the Friday story, leaving that for the Good Friday service at SMC.

So that we know how many people to set up for and expect for supper, we’d like you to sign up if you might. That will give us an idea of what to expect and we’ll be able to better prepare. Thanks and we look forward to Maundy Thursday as part of our Passion Week Worship. All are welcome!
