THE HOLY GOSPEL (Matthew 10.40-42) The Reverend John Hartman

In our Gospel lection Jesus tells of reward for disciples who find themselves welcomed in his name. Those who receive Jesus’ followers will find they are receiving the Lord himself and God who sent him. Those who do well and help even the least of the disciples will find great reward..

Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, “Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple-- truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”

Gospeler The Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The people sit.

THE SERMON BY THE RECTOR The Reverend John Hartman A period of silent reflection follows

All who are able please stand

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

Page 5: Grace Episcopal Church€¦ · 28-06-2020  · Grace Episcopal Church Loving our neighbors, no exceptions The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist– Rite II – Year A June

true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

THE ENDING OF A PASTORAL RELATIONSHIP

The Retiring Rector On the seventh day of February, 2010, I was inducted by Bishop Paul as rector of Grace Episcopal Church, in Kingston Pennsylvania, within the Episcopal Diocese of Bethlehem. I have, with God’s help and to the best of my abilities, exercised this trust, accepting its privileges and responsibilities. In accord with the Canons of the Church, pertaining to retirement, I must now leave this charge, and I publicly state that my tenure as rector of Grace Church ends on Tuesday, June 30th, 2020.

I have moved out of the rectory and relocated to Richmond, Virginia, where I hope to continue my ministry as either an interim or supply priest. The Senior Warden says Do you, the people of Grace Church, recognize and accept the conclusion of this pastoral relationship? People We do. Retiring Rector I present my letter of resignation, the keys of the parish, and the parish service register to you the Senior Warden .

The Senior Warden then indicates what provision(s)has/have been made for the continuation of the ministries of the parish.

The Retiring Rector and the People say together

O God, you have bound us together for a time as pastor and people to work for the advancement of your kingdom in this sacred place: We give you humble and hearty thanks for the ministry which we have shared in these years now past.

Silence

We thank you for your patience with us despite our blindness and slowness of heart. We thank you for your forgiveness and mercy in the face of our many failures.

Silence

Especially we thank you for your never-failing presence with us through these years, and for the deeper knowledge of you and of each other which we have attained.

Silence

We thank you for those who have been joined to this part of Christ’s family through baptism. We thank you for opening our hearts and minds again and again to your Word, and for feeding us abundantly with the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of your Son.

Silence

Now, we pray, be with those who leave and with us who stay; and grant that all of us, by drawing ever nearer to you, may always be close to each other in the communion of your saints. All this we ask for the sake of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Savior. Amen.

The Retiring Rector then says The peace of Christ be always with you People And also with you.

THE PRESENTATION HYMN

All those who are able, please remain standing.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer A

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Presider proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. In fulfillment of his true promise, the Holy Spirit came down on this day from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teach them and to lead them into all truth; uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession of one faith, and giving to your Church the power to serve you as a royal priesthood, and to preach the Gospel to all nations. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Page 9: Grace Episcopal Church€¦ · 28-06-2020  · Grace Episcopal Church Loving our neighbors, no exceptions The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist– Rite II – Year A June

The people stand. Then the Presider continues

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Presider and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Presider continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and

Page 10: Grace Episcopal Church€¦ · 28-06-2020  · Grace Episcopal Church Loving our neighbors, no exceptions The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist– Rite II – Year A June

drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
