Five Breathtaking Rail Journeys Bay of Islands Overnight CruiseTHE 20 DAY RAIL, CRUISE AND COACH HOLIDAY HAS CONTINUED TO BE ONE OF OUR MOST EXCITING tour packages on offer featuring the five rail experiences and overnight cruise listed on this page. Enjoy each of the rail journeys which offer something different, and includes a range of diesel and steam locomotives.

GLENBROOK VINTAGE RAILWAY Experience the thrill of travelling by steam train on this 15 kilometre scenic journey. Meander through beautiful rural countryside on a vintage train hauled by one of the lovingly restored steam locomotives. Settle into the immaculate wood carriages and get to know the staff in vintage uniform who will clip your ticket as you listen to the panting steam engine. Enjoy time to visit the restoration workshops enroute before returning to the Glenbrook Station for a delicious morning tea.

THE COASTAL PACIFIC This truly spectacular journey commences at the coastal port of Picton. Travel through the picturesque Marlborough Wine Region then continue along the East Coast via a thin wedge of land pinned between the Pacific Ocean on one side and the rugged beauty of the coastal mountains on the other. You may see amazing wildlife from your carriage including dolphins, seals and penguins before arriving at the seaside village of Kaikoura.

THE TRANZALPINE World renowned as the Great New Zealand Rail Adventure. Depart Christchurch and travel through the patchwork farmlands of the Canterbury Plains. Travel over massive viaducts, river valleys and spectacular gorges as you ascend to Arthur’s Pass located in the Southern Alps. Pass through the Otira Tunnel, skirt lakes and follow rivers as you travel to the West Coast.

THE TAIERI GORGE LIMITED A fascinating journey through rugged, spectacular scenery only accessible by train. Depart from Dunedin’s Historic Edwardian Railway Station and see grand examples of Victorian Stonework on bridges and tunnels plus travel across iron latticework viaducts built in the 1880s.

PLAINS VINTAGE RAILWAY & HISTORICAL MUSEUM The ‘K’88 or Washington was built in 1877 by Rogers Locomotive Works in New Jersey. After being placed in the Oreti River as flood protection the ‘K’ was recovered in the 1970s and moved to the Plains Museum. This was the first American built engine to enter service in New Zealand and against all odds a plan to restore the ’K’ to its former beauty commenced.

THE BAY OF ISLANDS OVERNIGHT CRUISE This will be a key highlight of your trip as you cruise on this catamaran called Ipipiri, the original Maori name for the Bay of Islands. You will be surrounded by nature and immersed in history as you enjoy the extensive facilities onboard. A tender will ferry you to nearby islands to explore plus you can take part in a variety of activities. In the evening enjoy a full buffet meal featuring local cuisine before retiring to your King Stateroom with private ensuite.

A highlight of this tour includes five breathtaking rail journeys and provides a nice balance of rail and coach travel. TOP TO BOTTOM: Ipipiri offers the ultimate in luxury and comfort; Glenbrook Vintage Railway; Taieri Gorge Limited; ‘K’88 at Plains Vintage Railway.
