GPE / KE• Learning Objective: To know what
centripedal force is, and link to GPE + KE
C – Describe where force and velocity act in centripedal motion
B – Work out where a rollercoaster has centripedal force
A* - Work out GPE, KE and centripedal motion

GRAVITATIONAL POTENTIALENERGY
1. GPE = mass x acceleration of gravity x height. If mass is 10, height = 5 and gravity is 10, what is the GPE?
2. At the bottom of a fall, whattype of energy does GPE turn into?
3. How can you work out acceleration?
• Centripetal force..•
THIS IS THE DIRECTION OF THE VELOCITY
THIS IS THE DIRECTION OF THE FORCE
The ball is kept in its path by the tension in the string – an example of a CENTRIPETAL FORCE.

The bunsen is kept in its path by the tension in the tubing – an example of a CENTRIPETAL FORCE.

• For these examples, draw and label how the velocity and centripetal force changes
• Why is this a vector not a scalar?• What force is the centripetal force in
each?• Give 2 other examples of centripetal
forces• Explain centripetal force in your own
words• Assuming the velocity doesn’t increase, is
there an acceleration or not?• What direction does momentum act?• What direction does acceleration act?
Electrons
Orbits
• If this is the answer, what is the question?
• Acts inwards
• It has direction
• In different directions
Electrons
• Design a rollercoaster• Include some loop the loops!• Work out GPE - Use 10g as the mass (turn
it into 0.01kg), and g=10 m/s2
• Ext: Work out acceleration both times, assuming it starts at 0m/s at the top, and by timing its fall
• EXT 2: Using 15N as force, calculate work done as it falls
On your paper design yours/a rollercoaster, including heights. You must have 2 drops
For each loop, work out GPE and KE, using mass as 50g (0.05kg) . Best name wins sweets!
Using working, draw a Velocity/time graph for each loop
Label the work done (if force is 15N)Label centripetal force and velocities
EXT: How much otherphysics can youinclude on it?E.g. Terminal
velocity..
