As you may be aware, there have been a number of feral pig sightings
in our district recently.
Facts about feral pigs
It is an offence to release pigs. Pigs can move up to 65km in one day,
however they largely reside in one area with occasional long distance
dispersal movements driven by seasonal availability of high quality
food, water and shelter.
They are opportunistic feeders eating both animals and plants (e.g.
earthworms, carcasses, live animals, bird eggs and green vegetation).
Pigs normally breed twice a year (at no defined time) but can breed
year round if conditions are favourable. The average litter size is 5-8.
Young are weaned at 2-3 months and can breed from 7-12 months of
age.
Adult size can range from 40 to 200kg with group sizes ranging between
3-10, (greater than 50 pigs around waters).
Impact
Feral pigs cause can physical damage to structures and environmental
destruction.
Pigs can spread disease and internal parasites which can affect people, livestock, horses, dogs and other animals. Two significant diseases
that pigs can spread are leptospirosis and swine fever.
What can you do?
We would like to hear from anyone who has seen a
feral pig (alive or dead) on their property or evidence
of feral pig damage.
Details we are interested in:
- where was the animal seen? Section number,
hundred, GPS and map reference appreciated.
- a description of the animal, colour, sex, approximate
weight
- number in the group
Information provided will assist NRM staff and
landowners in preventing feral pig numbers from
building and becoming problematic.

Looking Back
Looking back at Minburra, an Orroroo district pastoral property:
Chronicle (Adelaide), Saturday 14 June 1924
Obituary
DEATH OF A PASTORALIST
MR. W. G. FORRESTER, OF MINBURRA
Mr. William Gilbert Forrester, of Minburra Station, who died recently in his seventy-third year, was well known and highly respected throughout the north of the State. His early days were spent near Stockport, and his second name was given owing to the River Gilbert being adjacent to the property owned by his father. He received his education at Whinham College until his father's death, when it was continued at Mr. Cole's Grammar School at Watervale. As a lad of 16 he began to make his own way in life, and after acquiring two horses and a plough, which plant was added to as time went on, he undertook ploughing and dam building, principally at Crystal Brook and in the North-East, where his uncle, Mr. T. R. Bowman, had properties. The lure of the northern areas, when first thrown open for selection, attracted Mr. Forrester and induced him to select a farm in the hundred of Belalie, about seven miles from Jamestown. A little later he acquired another farm near Black Rock, and in 1882 purchased Minburra Station from Mr. Bowman. While at Jamestown, in 1878, he married Miss C. L. Klopper of Hope Valley, who survives him. Mr. Forrester's energy was unbounded. Many a time, after a long day on the farm at Jamestown, after having had tea, he would harness his horses and set off for Minburra, 60 miles away, sometimes calling at his Black Rock farm on the way, where he would obtain a change of horses. By driving over a precipitous hill near Black Rock Peak several miles of the journey might be saved. However, none but Mr. Forrester would undertake to descend this hill. Subsequently he disposed of his farm at Jamestown in order to devote the whole of his energies to Minburra. In those, days the price of wool was very low, and stock were cheap, so that those who settled in that part of the country had a hard battle to make progress. During one of the droughts the then owner of Baratta Station, adjoining Minburra, had a mob of 7,000 young sheep in very weak condition, which he was travelling in search of feed and water. When passing through Minburra he offered the sheep to Mr. Forrester at a price at which they were refused. A few days later scattered thunderstorms occurred which filled some of the dams on Minburra. The sheep were then turned back towards Baratta, the owner feeling confident that his country must have benefited by the thunderstorms. Mr. Forrester again saw him and said: — 'I was nearly offering you fourpence per head for those sheep the other day, to which the owner replied. 'Well, had you done so you could have had them.' Next day word was received from Baratta that no rain had fallen there. Mr. Forrester was then offered a half share of the sheep if he would provide feed and water for the mob. This offer he accepted, provided that the owner would care for the sheep until rain came. When the drought broke all that was left of those 7,000 sheep was but 700 Later, in the 1896-8 drought, more than half the stock on Minburra perished. Mr. Forrester was a worker, and with the grit and energy that characterised
the early settlers, struggled on through years of adverse conditions, and was ultimately rewarded by seeing a complete change in his financial outlook. For many years at the Jamestown market he was a large operator, and subsequently, when Bagot, Shakes & Lewis opened the first market in Orroroo, he was practically the backbone of the market, and both bought and sold large quantities of stock. In those days bullocks were in great demand, as after the bad times the settlers could not afford horses, and were able to cultivate with bullocks, and turn them out at night to feed. Mr. Forrester was an expert with bullocks, as well as with horses. Bullock teams, bearing the GF brand, might be seen, not only in all parts of this State, but in other States of the Commonwealth, so great was the business done by Mr. Forrester in them. He helped to supply many a struggling farmer with teams, and was always willing to give financial help in regard to settlement. Mr. and Mrs. Forrester's hospitality was enjoyed by many of the old residents of Orroroo, who have happy recollections of the good times spent at Minburra kangaroo hunting and shooting. Mr. Forrester loved good company, and a good practical joke, and was no mean impersonator of various characters, for the make-up of which he kept an assortment of disguises. On one occasion, when his boys were enthusiastically training themselves for athletic sports, Mr. Forrester thought an extra good long run might enhance their chances of winning, so he decided that they should have it. Having obtained the assistance of an accomplice, Mr. Forrester arranged that on a certain night a strange, distressed 'lady' should come to the homestead, appealing for help for her sister, who lived five miles away, and was being ill-treated by her drunken husband. It was a dark night, and no horses were available — they having been removed from the yard purposely — but the athletes, responding to the pathetic appeal of the 'lady,' rose to the occasion, and set off on the five mile sprint to render their aid. On their arrival all was peaceful, but they awakened the inmates of the house, and, after asking a few pertinent questions, realized they were the victims of a hoax. On their return journey they had ample time to devise schemes of revenge, some of which they carried into effect immediately on their arrival at the station; but, so ingeniously was the joke carried out, that they wreaked their vengeance on innocent members of the household, while the real culprits, snugly in bed, enjoyed the fun. The boys were often afterwards reminded that their subsequent success at the sports, for which they had been training, was mainly due to that 10-mile jog. In his early days Mr. Forrester was a good athlete, and he always took an interest in sport. He was an excellent judge of stock and a good dealer. One of his greatest pleasures was the handling of horses. Indeed, only a few weeks before his death he could be seen in the yards with a docile colt following him about. His name will long remain in the memory of the residents of the district as one worthy of esteem, who battled hard and won. The Minburra property was formed into a company, in 1917, and the sons, Messrs. Milton and Eardley Forrester, are now managing the business. Mr. Forrester leaves four sons; Messrs. G. H. Forrester, of the West Coast; P. E. Forrester, of Southern Cross, W.A.; M. W. Forrester, of Orroroo; and E. G. Forrester, of Minburra; and Mrs. H. Klopper, of Bridgetown, W.A.

There was a time was a time when these stickers were a common sight on vehicles sold and serviced by the Gibb family, Orroroo. Now semi-retired, Geoff Gibb recently hosted a visit from members of the Peterborough United Machinery Preservation Society Inc. (PUMPS) and others with an interest in historical vehicles and machinery from the wider district. One female passer-by reckoned it was 'real testosterone territory' at the former Gibbs Garage workshop.

Kerry Duffy and Fiona Dignan (below) were among the many Orroroo netballers and footballers at the recent Leigh Creek Christmas Pageant, billed as the 'Last Hurrah' for past and present residents of the once important coal mining town. It’s hard to believe that another year is quickly coming
to an end. You get a feeling the year is coming to a close
when your calendar starts filling up and you begin to
wonder if there will be enough days in the week to fit
everything in. It is interesting in that when we were
younger a week could take forever to come, but now
your thinking becomes “I wish time would slow down,
the years are slipping by so fast.” The fact is that a day
doesn’t take any less time than when we were a child
and today there are still 1,440 minutes in it.
As we look at our news on a daily basis we can say we
live in troubled times, unsure where the next tragedy
will unfold and how many people will be involved. It
can be easy for us to live our lives in fear not game to
venture too far from home, but the Psalmist tells us
when we are prepared to put our trust in God we can
say “My time is in Your hands” and we don’t have to fear
the days ahead.
Have a blessed, safe and peaceful Christmas with family
and friends.
God bless, John Cozens

Your Dog and the Public—Picking up after your Dog
Dog faeces can be a major health issue, both in your own garden and in public places. It
can spread disease and infection to other dogs and humans and pollute waterways.
Leaving dog faeces in public areas such as footpaths or parks is unhygienic and
disrespectful to others who use these areas.
Under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995, a dog’s owner, or the person responsible
for the dog, must immediately pick up and dispose of (in a lawful manner) that dog’s
faeces from a public place. Failure to do this constitutes a offence under the Act. The
issue is easy to manage by taking ‘dog poop’ bags with you when you are out with your
dog. These bags are often available from dispensers in council-managed public areas, but
you should always carry your own. A ‘Pooch
Pouch’ TM can be attached to your dogs lead so
you have a ready supply of bags. Please note
that dog faeces cannot be placed in public bins
unless securely wrapped.
For more information, you can collect a copy of
the Dog Owners Handbook from the Council
office.
Dog Tidy bags are located in the median strip in
Second Street Orroroo and at the Oval. Please
be a responsible dog owner.

CARRIETON NEWS
Weather during November has been topsy turvy with extremes of temperature, winds and good living days also. Unfortunately the Mid North areas copped Mother Natures wrath with devastating consequences after a ‘firestorm’ type activity ripped through the countryside, fanned by very strong winds. Our sympathy and thoughts are with all of those affected by this terrible event. Sympathy It was with sadness that we heard of the passing of Jeff Ogilvy this week. Sympathy is extended to Shane and Paddy Rowe and family, and Denise and family. We often saw him attending events in our community and he will be remembered for his friendly nature, generosity with his time and kindness. Congratulations Best wishes and congratulations to Nick and Bec on the occasion of their recent engagement. Nick is the youngest son of Vincent and Julie Williams of Carrieton and Bec is the daughter of Greg and Sue Williams of Burra. CPA Meeting An AGM of the Carrieton Progress Meeting was held Monday 30th November. Some positions changed. Paula Osborne was elected President and Lorna Schmidt is now Vice President. All other positions remained the same. Items discussed and decided upon included the speed of traffic going through the town, relocating the school bus stop because of this, the Carrieton Christmas show which will be held at 5.00pm on Sunday 20th December at the Caravan Park (see Shop window for details) and the community tractor. Council CEO, Stephen Rufus was in attendance and answered questions put to him. December is a busy month with Christmas wind ups, and of school functions, Christmas and our annual rodeo. Don’t forget we can always do with volunteers on the night. Funds from the rodeo help many bodies in the district and we would welcome a few hours of your time. Contact anyone from Carrieton and they will point you in the right direction. Happy Christmas to you all and may 2016 be full of happiness and good health.

“SA Water VACSWIM is a program to waterproof the confidence in young South Australians, in and around the water. It is a South Australian Government supported initiative to provide children aged 5 to 13 years with opportunities to develop a range of skills and positive experiences in the areas of water safety, confidence and competence in the water, personal survival activities and basic aquatic emergency procedures.
These skills are delivered at over 130 pools, beaches and lakes throughout South Australia by one of three primary program providers – Royal Life Saving Society, Surf Life Saving and YMCA – who engage qualified instructors to teach the children of South Australia.
The majority of programs take place from Monday 4th to Tuesday 12th January 2016; they run for 45 minutes a day for 7 days.
