The second half of Term 1 has been a very busy and challenging term for everyone involved. Not only have our staff been immersed in student learning, but there have been a great number of activities that have continued to occur despite the threat of the COVID 19 virus. Swimming carnivals, Rugby League Tours and school debating have been some of the many positive aspects that have been presented to our students. In all of these activities the fantastic Gowrie Spirit has been a feature throughout and something that we will be looking to tap into in the coming terms. Throughout term 2, we will be ensuring that all returning students are able to engage in a genuine camping experience for each year level. Our Pastoral leaders are very keen to make this happen so that the boys will have a safe and engaging activity to look forward to upon their return.

On an exciting note, St Teresa’s College is delighted to announce that Abergowrie has won a major award at the National

Indigenous Education and Boarding Symposium. Our College won the award for Exceptional Cultural Connection by a Boarding School.

Congratulations to the Gowrie Family and the number of programmes, events and opportunities that are on offer to our students connecting culture and community. Thank you to the staff who implement and collaborate with others to breathe life into these activities.

We are very dynamic in this area and have now been recognised nationally for the innovative work that we do. We are strong, smart and deadly and we should all be very proud of our efforts. We will continue to build on this dimension of our learning community ensuring that our students’ cultural connections are embedded in the culture of the Gowrie Family.

Year 7 & 8 Pastoral Leader ReportKatherine Coulter

Year 9 & 10 Pastoral Leader ReportChristopher Hatcher

The end of Term 1 will be remembered with mixed emotions as the world travels in uncharted waters Despite this, St Teresa’s College have worked hard to create normality for our Year 7 and 8 Students. The boys have finished their assessments and are looking forward to returning home to their families and communities.

Term 2 is going to be very exciting, as camps have been organised for both Year 7 and 8 cohorts. Depending on our safe camping spot, the boys will

hopefully have the opportunity to participate in many bonding activities such as canoeing, raft building and orienteering to mention a few.

Please be careful and keep safe over the coming weeks. I look forward to welcoming the boys back in the new term.

Just like that, term 1 has come to an end. My highlight of the term would have to be our interhouse swimming carnival held at the college pool. Our senior students showed buckets of Gowrie spirit ensuring races were filled, participants encouraged and house chants were screamed at the top of their lungs. Thank you to our senior students for setting such a great example for our juniors. Unfortunately we were forced to postpone our learners driving test this will now be rescheduled once we all return to the college. I wish all families a safe term break.

Hello to all families of our year 9 & 10 students. Firstly I would like to wish you all a very safe, and as much as possible, an enjoyable term break. The term has flown by as we continue to work as a team in our cohort to ensure the boys benefit from a supportive and dynamic learning environment. We have continually had to adapt to change throughout 2020, which our boys have done with increasing maturity and courage. I look forward to more pastoral activities in Term 2, which will help further build relationships and create many fond memories at St Teresa’s College. Please remain safe and healthy over the break and I look forward to welcoming the boys back next term.

A big hello to all of our families from the residential staff. As a whole, we would like to begin our report by thanking all of our families for the level of trust that you have placed in us to care for your son We take this responsibility very seriously and our care is always for the wellbeing and growth of your child. We would also like to thank parents and carers for the patience and understanding in regards to student travel that you have all shown throughout the past two weeks. The travel arrangements that we have organised have been done so in unprecedented circumstances in our College and throughout communities.

Throughout this term, residential staff have worked hard in their year levels to engage new and returning students in the routines of the college. There have been a number of activities in residences, particularly in the junior space that have been aimed to build community and foster new friendships. Swimming, fishing and other local activities have been the preference over travelling to

Townsville and these outings have been well received by all students. Term 1 is always a difficult time for our new Year 7 students and through a lot of persistence and perseverance by staff we are finally seeing some positive results in this space.

As always the residential staff have assisted greatly in ensuring that weekend activities are numerous. Sports such as Rugby League and AFL have continued on from last year, while Football (soccer) and Boxing training have created a new level of interest amongst students. A great addition to this healthy lifestyle approach is the ongoing push for healthy eating options in the vending machines. These options have been well received as they were in 2019.

As students return home, please know that we are all thinking of our families throughout the next few months and we look forward to once again welcoming your boys back into our College in Term 2.

There are plenty of positive things we and our families can do to stay physically and mentally healthy.

1. Keep active - do physical jobs around the house and in the garden. Help tidy up, go for walks, go for swims or go fishing and hunting.

2. Connect with nature - go outside to the beach, creek, bush or into the garden

3. Laugh - share jokes, watch funny clips and movies

4. Practise kindness - be kind to people living in your home. Make a cup of tea for a family member, give hugs, say kind words and give compliments.

5. Focus on what’s good- at then end of the day think about or write down 1 good thing about the day. Share a positive story with another person.

6. Keep learning - Our minds need challenge and stimulation to stay healthy. Do your school booklets and read, read, read! Read a newspaper, school newsletter, comic, good book. Reading is the best way to keep your mind active.

7. Connect with people on the phone - phone a friend, phone grandma and family. Give people a call and stay connected!

8. Concentrate on your strengths - Think about your 3 top strengths and use them during this challenging time.

9. Meditate and pray - spend a few minutes each day in stillness. Find a quiet place(at the beach, in a boat, sitting under a tree) and take some deep breaths. Deep listening is inner, quiet, still awareness and waiting.

Assistant Principal Religious EducationPaula HendersonThe season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and prepares us for Easter and the risen Christ. During Lent, we focus on our own prayer life and helping others through social action by supporting Project Compassion. Our students began their Project Compassion work by setting up an Icy Cup stall. We had makers, sellers and consumers with the intention of helping those in need. By doing these hands on activities and reflecting on

our actions, we do great things by doing good for others.

Father Damian presides over Mass weekly for our College community and his message is always connected to how we can live our lives more like Jesus. Through the Gospel he challenges us to be better people in all that we do.

Amid the Coronavirus pandemic, Pope Francis asks us ‘ to respond with the universality of prayer, compassion and tenderness,” he said. “Let’s stay united. Let us, through prayer, make those who are alone and tested feel our closeness.”

Senior Debating TeamThis year our College has once again been proudly represented in the Senior Division of the Townsville Debating Competition. Students, Soren Pryor, Benjamin Kleingeld and Jaliell Nathaniel were the affirmative team and debated the topic, ‘That politicians should receive the median wage’. Abergowrie was narrowly beaten by Pimlico High School, but delivered a strong argument why politicians should receive a more humble wage. Students, Demas Farrell and Thomas Melville-Simmons fulfilled the jobs of Chairperson and timekeeper. Thank you to Ms Demae McMahon for taking the students to Townsville.

Gowrie

TVOur visiting artists Travers Ross and Bindimu, have been creating with students to give them great experiences in the area of media. Students have been investigating the production and performance side of podcasts and how to use social media as a tool to share messages and powerful stories. As a result, Gowrie TV, has been created and can be found on Facebook and Instagram. Tune in and catch up with the stories at the heart of our College.

Comedian, Kylan Ambrum, travelled to Gumburu to facilitate a wonderful learning opportunity that brought together the craft of comedy with a strong literacy focus. The Students spent two full days and a night drafting, designing, crafting and performing some exceptionally funny comedy sketches and stand up comedy acts. Unfortunately, due to bad weather, we had to cancel our trip to compete in the Cairns Class Clowns Melbourne Comedy Festival. We will continue to foster our learning in the performing arts to give our students the opportunity to develop their self-confidence, literacy and performance skills.

Year 12 MOCK INTERVIEWSThis term and as part of their assessment, Yr 12 students have been creating job advertisements, interview questions, sorting through resumes and participating in mock interviews to understand what is required in terms of getting a job from an employer’s perspective. Thank you to all the staff members who helped us out and acted as diesel fitters, rangers and registered nurses.

Year 11 AquacultureYear 11 Aquaculture students went on an excursion to Crystal Bay Prawns (part of the SeaFarms group) near Cardwell. We followed the life of a prawn from a small naupili to the final product that we eat. We learnt about the best growing conditions in the ponds, how to spot a sick prawn, how prawns are graded, how they are packaged and sent to consumers and lots more. A big shout out to the staff from Crystal Bay Prawns / SeaFarms, particularly Anthony and Mick for giving up their time and sharing their knowledge with us.

Meet our new TAIHS nurse Therese Reid. Therese has moved to Abergowrie from Townsville with her husband and three young children, Jett, Charlie and Claire. Therese has worked extensively in communities across North Queensland including Palm Island, Thursday Island and Doomadgee. Her family is enjoying living close to some great, fishing spots and having the children enjoy the great outdoors. Therese is looking forward to providing health care to the students of St Teresa’s College.
