Abstract

Minerals form the core of industrial development and therefore, they

are the essential raw material for basic industries like power generation,

steel, Cement, fertilizers, refactories etc. Industrialization & mineral demand

area activities which reinforce each other. Expansion of domestic. Market of

minerals requires to grow secondary industry. A well integrated programme

of economic development, therefore, involves the expanded use of mineral

resources in the local industry. Few activities surpass mining as a key to

economic development and a quite apart from benefits derived from end

product use.

The Directorate of Geology & Mining Regional Office Rewa is

engaged in various geological investigation and this present task is given for

sorting out a potential block of Limestone which tunes to cement grade

limestone in all grade lime stone deposits. This report incorporated the

details of the area which is part of strip which is running all along the river

Bihar and is about 10 km in length and is a part of Survey of India Topo

sheet 63 H/3, 1:50,000.

The prospecting work was started in year 2011-12 taking an area of

2.78 Sq kms. The limestone belongs to Vindhyan Super Group and Bhander

Series, and is called geologically as Nagod limestone. The limestone is

exposed and outcropping near Northern side of river bank. Hence the

prospecting by deploying drill rigs, the bore holes has been put on Northern

side of river up to a distance of a Kilometer in north-south direction. During

the prospecting from dated 03.12.2011 to 18.04.2012 and 01.04.2016 to

30.05.2016 total 45 bore holes is being drilled achieving 1341.20 meter

core drilling, simultaneously carried out logging and sampling of the core.

The lime stone thickness encountered in bore holes varies from 1 mts to

19.45 mts. Total 367 nos. sample sent to lab for analysis and after receiving

analysis result it is being interpreted that limestone have weighted CaO-

45.77% and average CaO-44.89%, MgO-2.26%, SiO2-10.59%, Al2O3

2.35%, Fe2O3-1.15%, LOI 38.09

The reserve calculation of 332 (UNFC) category is being done which

envisage a reserve of 14.58 MT as per run and 11.09 MT as per core.

Preface

The well known Bhander limestone strip runs from Rewa to further

east in Satna Panna and up to Damoh district of M.P.

This strip can be called as "boon", where the Limestone is fetching

chest of government in form of Mineral revenue "as state exchequer" as well

as it is giving two Squire Meals to thousand and thousand people of the area.

It is well evident that number of lime burning units was established in

late 18th century and the Lime was sent not only in India but to the various

part of world.

Geological studies is being done by various agencies in early 19th

century and there after from this strip which runs from Rewa and leads up to

Damoh a number of suitable area were sort out for installation of cement

units. Till date, following cement unit is being commissioned at different

places of Vindhya Pradesh.

1. J.P. Associates Rewa M.P.

2. J.P. Bela Rewa M.P.

3. Prism Cement 2 unit Satna M.P.

4. Satna Cement Satna M.P.

5. Maihar Cement Maihar M.P.

6. KJS Cement maihar M.P.

7. J.P. Babupur Cemant Satna M.P.

8. J.P. Sidhi Cement Sidhi M.P.

9. Reliance Cementation Maihar M.P.

A number of PLs were being granted to different houses for doing

further studies where they may sort out suitable area of cement grade

Limestone.

In this Jam pack situation, where a number of houses are doing

investigation for getting an area suitable for installation of plant, the

Page 6: GOVT. OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department · OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department REPORT ON PROSPECTING OF LIMESTONE ... the prospecting from dated 03.12.2011

Directorate of Geology & Mining M.P. Mineral Resources Department is

also engaged in probing an area where a major cement unit can be set up.

This Regional office of MRD has done some serious efforts and

endeavors from 2005 onwards. It becomes more imperative after 2007

summit held at Indore, Khajuraho and Jabalpur etc. to demarcate and

delineate a good potential of Limestone. The M.P. Government is signing

MOU's with different houses for setting up industries in State specially in

Vindhya region as this province is most promising for installation of hydro

electrical projects, Food, Agriculture tourism as well as on Mineral based

industries i.e. on Coal, Bauxite and Limestone etc.

We, the Directorate of Geology and Mining Regional Office Rewa

M.P. have put every effort to do quest for a good potential area and got

successes in two area firstly PAGRA and secondly TALA-BANDARKHA-

BIGODY-GHUINSA area where we have marked two potential area where

the prospecting can be done.

In this investigation, the outcrops running NE-SW which are seen all

along the River Bihar and, at places concealed miles together, under soil. By

putting Boreholes in these soil covered area, we have addressed whether the

limestone remains continue or not. So, after putting a number of Boreholes,

we have proved its continuity along with a substantial reserve of Limestone

which may feed a major cement unit.

area are dhurbhusi, kans, kusal, phuli, panwar, gursakri, harsingar etc.

Amarbel, keoti. ber, mahul, palasbel are the conspicuous climbers of the

area.

1.4 Climate

The climate of the area is characterized by extremes of temperature

and dryness, except during the monsoon months. The cold season is from

December to February. The hot season is from March to about middle of

June. The period from mid June to September constitute the south western

monsoon season. October and November form the post monsoon season.

The average annual rain fall in the area is 1074.7 mm. The rain fall

generally decreases from the south west to north west. The period from June

to September is the main rainy season, July being the rainiest month. The

rain fall during the south west monsoon season constitutes about 88% of the

annual rainfall. In January and February some rain fall occurs in association

with passing western disturbances.

-3-

Page 10: GOVT. OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department · OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department REPORT ON PROSPECTING OF LIMESTONE ... the prospecting from dated 03.12.2011

Temperatures begin to drop in November-December and January is

the coldest month with the mean daily minimum at about 90 C. From March

temperature rise rapidly till May, which is the hottest month. Temperature in

May and June sometimes rises to about 470 C.

1.5 Inhabitants

In the area about 97% of the population professes Hindu religions.

Muslims are in very small minorities. They are next in numerousness. Jain's

and Christian are the remaining part of the population. In the area Brahmins

who form an important upper cast came from northern India. They are sub

divided into a galaxy of sub cast. Mahajans or Baniyas form the wealthy

section of the population. By occupation they are traders and bankers.

Rajput's are the traditional fighting and land owing cast who occupies

dominent position in society. The important rajput clans living in the area

are Baghels, Parihar, Raghuvanshi. Ahir, Kachi, Mali. Teli, Dhobhi are

functional cast which are engaged in their respective cast trade. Muslims are

divided into Sunni and Siyas. jain's are divided into two sects of Digambar

and Shyotamber. Schedule cast of the area are chamar and Khumar. Chamar

forming four-fifths of the shedule cast population nearly 85% of their

working force is in agriculture. Next in numerousness to the Chamar, the

Khumars differ from the chamar cast in that their economy is not agriculture

dominant. The house hold industries traditionally associate with the cast is

the making of urban utencils bricks and tiles. Coal and Gond are the shedule

tribes of the area. Kols are described as forest tribes who find a mention in

the Ayodhya Kand of Tulsi Ramayan. Kols are the 70% of the schedule

tribes population. Gonds are the next in numerousness to Kols.

PREVIOUS WORK

The geology of Vindhyan basin was initially given by Mallet (1871).

In 1854 area was mapped by Oldham and then by Wilson in (1874-74).

Rajrajan demarcated limestone deposit of Satna district in 1961 Rao and

Chape (1965), Mehta and Raman (1967) and Chaman lal (1972) of

Geological Survey of India.

The geologists of the Directorate of Geology and Mining Madhya

Pradesh have also prospected the limestone belt of Satna district. Mishra,

S.S. carried out the assessment of calcium carbide and S.M.S. grade

limestone in Satna district in field season 1974-75. Pandey J.L. Carried out

systematic sampling of cement grade limestone between Sajjanpur and Satna

in 1975-76. During the field season 1979-80-81, Tandon, S.C. conducted

exploration of limestone in Jhanjhar, Karmau, Baghai and Bariha area of

Satna district. In 1991-92 exploration of cement grade limestone in

Ramnagar, chhibaura and Degarhat blocks of the district was done by V.K.

Sankhala and A. Bajpai. During field Session 2004-05 mineral inventory of

Satna District was carried out by Shri C.K. Nema Diputy Directore, tech.

Besides geological Survey of India and Directorate of Geology and

Mining several other agencies like Bokaro Steel Plant and Hyderabad

PRESENT WORK

The present work was undertaken after the suggestion and guidance

given by Shri V.K. Austin (Director) and Shri S.K. Pandya (the then Dy.

Director and the Regional Head) and Shri M.I. Siddiqui (Regional Head).

Looking to the present scenario, some of the major mineral block will be

sold through e-auction. Hence, the present Director, Shri V.K. Austin

suggested to prepare a report of the compact block of Pondikalan area, so

that a larger area may fetch revenue to the state exchequer. This report

incorporates the details of work done during the prospecting from field

session 2011 to 2012. The investigation includes 50.00 Sq Km reco survey

followed by demarcation of potential zone. Detailed geological mapping was

done by Theodolite on 1:4,000 of 2.78 Sq Km. Total 45 Bore holes were

drilled achieving 1341.20 mts core drilling. The generated Lime stone core

samples of 367 no. were sent to lab for analyzing its industrial utility. The

findings and interpretation dealt in following pages.

GEOLOGY

4.1 Reconnaissance Survey:

An area of about 50.00 sq km has been covered by reconnaissance

survey, along with collection of outcrop samples and marking of outcrop on

1: 50000 SOI Toposheet No. 63H/3. The regional geological set up of the

aforesaid covered area is as given below :-

Age Supergroup Group Lithology

Recent to Sub Recent - - Soil/Alluvium Laterite

Proterozoic Vindhyan Bhander

Sirbu Shale

Bhander Limestone (Nagod)

Ganurgarh Shale

Rewa Upper Rewa Sandstone

4.2 Regional Geology:

As described in reconnaissance survey, an area of about 50.00 sq km

was done along with recording of stratigraphic units given in lithology. The

most of the surveyed area comprises of Sirbu shales. The grey to bluish grey

limestone was seen as it is forming a sickle within Sirbu and Ganurgarh

shales. Out of the surveyed area, limestone occupy about 20% of total

covered area. The upper Bhander sandstone is seen on the top of the hillocks

present in the South of the area. General dip is 50 to 8

0 due north.

-7-

Page 14: GOVT. OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department · OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department REPORT ON PROSPECTING OF LIMESTONE ... the prospecting from dated 03.12.2011

4.3 Characteristics of Rock/Lithology

Upper Rewa, Sandstone -

Upper Rewa sandstone forms prominent hillocks in the south of

Pondikalan trending NE-SW. These are the oldest formation of the area. It is

fine grained, grayish in colour and quartzitic in nature. It has ferruginous

material and at places partially converted into laterite/aluminous laterite and

leads to Bauxtization.

Ganurgarh Shale -

Ganurgarh shale is exposed to the south of Bihar river, which is

overlain by limestone. It is grayish brown and fine grained. It has siliceous

material along bedding planes.

The colour of this shale is reddish at bottom but becomes grey to

greenish grey towards top. The shale has ripple marks and it is flaggy in

nature.

It often has layers of red to buff colour, and fine to coarse grained

sandstone which forms alternate bandings. It is traversed by quartz. The

shale becomes pink, brown to buff or dirty white towards top due to

contamination of calc-arenitic sediments (facies). It can be seen to the north

of nala at village Bigodi.

-8-

Page 15: GOVT. OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department · OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department REPORT ON PROSPECTING OF LIMESTONE ... the prospecting from dated 03.12.2011

Bhander (Nagod) limestone –

The exposures of limestone occurring in the area are, in patches along

the NE-SW. The limestone deposits are mostly horizontally bedded with

dips varying from 50 to 8

0 due North. At places, limestone is concealed

below soil cover, varying in thickness from a meter1 to 19.45 meters. The

upper part of the limestone is argillaceous and siliceous in nature.

The Bhander limestone deposits in the area show fairly frequent

variation in quality and thickness both laterally and vertically. In several

localities, the good quality limestone beds are interbedded by low grade

limestone and shale. Hence limestone exhibits arenaceous as well as

argillaceous nature. Therefore at some places, it is highly siliceous and

argillaceous in nature.

The limestone is well bedded, fine to medium grained, grey to

dark grey in colour. Overall it is heterogeneous with lateral end vertical

variation in respect of Lithology and chemical content.

Sirbu shale:

Prominent exposures of Sirbu shale are seen to the north of of the

area, along the road cutting, nala and river courses. The shales are thinly

bedded and vary in colour from light grey to pale grey and purple to purplish

brown. These shales at places directly overlie the limestone horizon.

-9-

Page 16: GOVT. OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department · OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department REPORT ON PROSPECTING OF LIMESTONE ... the prospecting from dated 03.12.2011

Upper Bhander Sandstone:

These sandstone makes prominent hillocks to the South , trending NE-

SW. It is hard, compact, fine grained and brown in colour.

Laterite:

At places to the south of Pondikalan, laterite occurrences were

noticed, particularly on high hillocks. The lateritic boulders are found

scattered on the foot hills as well as on ground.

4.4 Local Geology:

4.4.1 Survey:

An area of about 2.78sq km were surveyed and mapped on 1:4000

scale and also cadastral map.

The grids were laid down by theodolite by keeping 100 M. interval

and subsequently boreholes were planned to keep them 200 M apart. In the

survey all the physiographical features were marked along with taking R.L.

of bore holes. A contour map at an internal of 1 meter gap has been prepared

to know the present status of land in respect of M.S.L.

Superimposition of aforesaid data is being done on pedestal map for

using it for further mining purpose of deposit.

4.4.2 Geological Mapping:

The outcrop geological mapping was done simultaneously along with

gridding to gather the exact geological disposition of limestone within the

area. The rock unit found in area of interest is shale and limestone. The

general characteristics of rock are dealt in chapter 4:3. However, the over all

behavior of limestone is dealt in salient feature of limestone in the chapter of

prospecting work.

-10-

Page 17: GOVT. OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department · OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department REPORT ON PROSPECTING OF LIMESTONE ... the prospecting from dated 03.12.2011

4.4.3 Description of Rock:

A short account of rock type and its characteristics being narrated as

under:

• Shale

• Limestone

Shale:

The shales of area are red to cherry red in colour, flaggy in nature and

easily breakable. Thick piles were recorded in the area where shale is

exposed. It is at places seen traversed by gypsum and thin lamellae of

brown, buff, pale yellow and greenish material. It has gentle dip varying

between 20 to 10

0 due North.

Limestone:

The area consists of Nagod Limestone which is grey, light gray, fine

grained, soft and stratified. It is stromatolitic with their intercalations of

argillaceous material.

The thickness as revealed by borehole data is variable. It has got thin

calcite veins and also seen as cavity fills. At places inherent silica and

argillaceous material makes it to siliceous to shally limestone. Limestone is

concealed below soil cover in the area. It runs parallel to the both side of

river Bihar. The general dip observed is about 50 to 8

0 due north.

CHAPTER –V

PROSPECTING WORK

5.1 Prospecting Technique

The prospecting work is done in about 2.78sq km area where the

detailed geological mapping and gridding was done.

An area of about 2.78 sq km is being chosen followed by putting

boreholes for core drilling. The limestone core portion was studied and

separated from whole run of core for sending it to chemical lab for analysis.

Where after receiving analytical result further study of reserve calculation is

being done.

5.2 Drilling work

An area of about 2.78 sq km was studied thoroughly by gridding and

simultaneously by geological mapping. The Limestone, in the area, is of

simple type and having being stratified deposit. An internal of 200 M was

taken into the consideration to get good result in respect of horizontal and

vertical variation of limestone.

This spacing is a right choice in simple type of limestone deposits. A

drilling depth of 30 M is kept for all boreholes as per IBM Specifications,

where limestone is available while in those areas where shale touches, it is

being closed earlier to 30 M depth.

-12-

Page 19: GOVT. OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department · OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department REPORT ON PROSPECTING OF LIMESTONE ... the prospecting from dated 03.12.2011

5.3 Sampling

The limestone core portion was identified by putting drops of dilute

HCl followed by recording them into log register. The same portion was

then separated from core and splitted into two halves longitudinally.

Thereafter, one half crushed upto 100 mesh size and packed into the

polythene bags. A duplicate sample is also packed for further reference,

while one of this was sent to lab for analyzing. CaO, MgO, SiO2, Fe2O3,

Al2O3 and LOI.

5.4 Analysis of Limestone Sample:

Each crushed sample which was prepared by aforesaid method is dealt

in 5:3 Para was analyzed for CaO, MgO, Sio2, Fe2O3, Al2O3 and LOI in

departmental lab at Jabalpur. The core portion which is giving +34% Cao is

being considered in making a mineable band of limestone while below this

Cao% is treated as waste and not Included in making band. The IBM

specification is followed in making mineable band.

5.5 Salient Feature of Limestone:

It is very clear with the analysis result that, Blander Limestone is

erratic in nature. It doesn't exhibit a homogenous deposition. The calc-

arenite facie in this particular area is heterogeneous, reveals shally, siliceous,

limestone and vary up to low silica limestone also.

The relief of limestone area is undulating. It is stratified also having a

gentle dip due north. The local warp and rolling dips also makes a cause that

somewhere limestone touches at earlier level while at some places it goes

down below +15 M.

-13-

Page 20: GOVT. OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department · OF MADHYA PRADESH Mineral Resources Department REPORT ON PROSPECTING OF LIMESTONE ... the prospecting from dated 03.12.2011

The limestone is concealed below soil and shale. However, the limestone

overall can be placed in cement grade with arenaceous and argillaceous

variations. The overall average chemical analysis of limestone in which

permissible limits of CaO% is added as per IBM specification is given

below:

Cao MgO Sio2 Fe2O3 Al2O3 LOI

44.89% 2.26% 10.59% 1.15% 2.35% 38.09%

The overall weighted percentages of CaO are 45.77%.

CHAPTER - VI

RESERVES

6.1 Block demarcation of Pondikalan, Bigodi and Aira

By taking the IBM specification, each borehole was studied with

respect to chemical analysis where the CaO% is exhibiting +34% is being

considered to form a composite thick layer within a borehole, thereafter

available mineable reserve was calculated, by taking an average CaO which

tunes +42%. The area of influence was taken as the half of the distance

between two boreholes and where there is no borehole drilled, an area of 50

M was considered as area of influence. Overall, 45 boreholes were studied

and thereafter a block nearby Pondikalan, Bigodi and Aira was delineated

which is measured about 2.78 sq km in dimension.

6.2 Block Limit

The thickness of limestone was calculated with average chemical

analysis and weighted for Cao% in Block. Minimum thickness of limestone

6.5 Gross Net Reserve

Limestone reserve of 332 UNFC category tune to an order of 14.58 M.T. as per run and

11.09 M.T. as per core.

However the minable reserve will be taken in to the consideration after doing deduction of

the area which is not to be used for mining purpose. The O.B. ratio is also at a place may change

the minable reserve, Hence with these possibility along unforeseen geological circumstance a

10% cut in reserve may leads to a net gross reserve of 13.12 MT as per run and 9.98 M.T. as per

core.

6.6 Opinion and Recommendation

As a result of this prospecting work department is able to speak about that further

work regarding limestone prospecting may remain continue in area. So that in future the

prospecting may enhance the limestone potential of the area. Therefore the work is so for

continue to do further quest and probe regarding delineating few more suitable blocks of

cement grade limestone.

By sorting another suitable block a major cement plant can be installed in this

Amarpatan Tehsil which is so for is known to be a non Industrial/Undeveloped segment of

District Satna (M.P.)
